  1. On the other hand, its a random episode of Smackdown. If its not followed up on and not hyped in the weeks and months to come, what harm was it? I'm not saying I necessarily agree, just offering up a counterpoint.
  2. I don't *think* I mind it just yet. They're putting the rocket on Bryan for the short term so keeping him hot through MITB / Summerslam, or as far as they're going with him, makes sense. I don't see the Shield dropping their titles this weekend or any time soon. If Cena/Taker is the plan for next year, they may very well keep them hot to set up a Bryan/Cena/Taker six man for summerslam.
  3. Love this thread, as even if it doesn't matter much any more, Joe's plight is one of the really unfortunate misses and what ifs in recent years. I remember discovering ROH back in the day and waiting on line in the lobby outside the hotel ballroom, watching Foley and then Joe make their way to the back. He was cool as hell with the fans, had an awesome presence, especially for ROH, and then brought the heat in the ring. I knew better when he jumped to TNA, but nonetheless held out hope he'd have an awesome run on top and really change the promotion. The first Angle match is still the only TNA PPV I've ever bought, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. What a lost opportunity.
  4. I still watch it most every day so I could probably help you out. They brought back a lot of the vets like Laura, Scotty, Anna, Kevin, Lucy etc. after Edward Quartermaine died. Most of the show was written about the Mob storyline with Sonny and Carly until a year ago when they fired the writing team. Then a bunch of people from One Life To Live came on the show but they had to be rewritten when OLTL became a web show. If One Life To Live and All My Children can last on Hulu, that's probably the future of Soap Operas, online only. I think they only post 2 episodes a week instead of daily. Do Any of you guys watch Breaking Amish? That's my new favorite reality show now that Hoarders/Intervention/Jersey Shore have been canceled. It's pretty obvious that that show is scripted as hell but it's still entertaining. Wow they really went old school. I remember hearing that they drew out the Sonny/Jason/Carly bit for years longer than seemed plausible even on a soap, with a variety of heels shuffling into the territory. I can't imagine how they'd integrate folks from OLTL & AMC but could be fun. What I can't deal with is when they decide that every child from the show needs to jump from about ages 5-8 to 16-20 overnight and become headline acts. Just doesn't cut it for me.
  5. Haven't watched since college, which finished way back in 1988. I am even further out of date. A few less trips to TJ and hours spent watching AJ and maybe you'd be of some use!
  6. Anyone want to bring me up to speed on General Hospital over the last 10-15 years? My babysitter got me hooked one year when I had the flu and stuck with it it for years afterwards, but fell off during college and grad school.
  7. I've always considered Kobashi one of the best ever, if not the best, at using his facials and body language to dictate and control emotions. The way he'd crawl or hobble around while taking a beating but not going down, the fist pump before the moonsault, the ability to withstand a ridiculous amount of punishment before finally losing a fall, he had such a unique charisma that got people behind him unlike just about anyone else booked the way he was.
  8. That's what I thought. It didn't make sense as an 11 year old why these stories were being crossed and still doesn't today.
  9. Rewatching this, did you get any sense that having these programs run almost simultaneously diluted their impact?
  10. Nail on the head. This was awesome. Contrasting styles, big moves, big drama, big selling and storytelling and a finish that fits the match. Awesome. ****1/4
  11. Liger offers his hand, Samurai rejects it and the war is on with a Koppo kick. An awesome palm strikes KO Samurai and then Liger focues on Sammy's arm for an extended period. After selling for much of the match Samurai reverses a tombstone but Liger again turns the table on him before Sammy shockingly takes the fall and title with a roll up. This felt like a major upset and win in the wake of their April matches. This feud is easily best in the ring of the year. ****
  12. I watched this shortly after attending Wrestlemania, and for whatever reason it made me think that this could be truly difficult for a live audience to appreciate because absent an awesome big screen in the arena, much of the nuanced groundwork will be lost on folks that aren't near ringside. That being said, I was not ringside and liked this quite a bit. Action is quick early with Fujiwarwa working for holds on the leg and arm. Loved the spot where Vale has a single leg and Fujiwara spins it into one of his own. Things get heated after an awesome high kick knockdown by Vale. The finish was great as you don't quite see it coming it fits into how the match was structured. ***3/4
  13. That aired during *the* boom period. The same period that allowed Vince to go public and lead to practically double digit hours of weekly prime time wrestling. Everyone was hot for wrestling and looking to ride the wave. Wrestling With Shadows was awesome but also professional and came with a stamp of credibility that let A&E pick it up. I don't think A&E picks it up in 2013.
  14. I haven't taken the time to look up some of the figures that were reported/speculated on in the WON or elsewhere at the time, but when it was all said and done, didn't ECW lose more money than SMW? ECW & Heyman's booking are incredibly memorable and something a lot of fans look back on fondly -- probably due to a combination of (1) when it got hot coinciding with (2) the online scene expanding, (3) being so different from what many people in the northeast had grown up with or been exposed to and (4) integration with pop culture primarily due to music. For those of us that weren't getting tapes from Japan or had scene much/any Memphis, this was NEW and it was awesome. As an impressionable teenager it was guaranteed to rock your world. Call ECW a success story if you like, but you're going to need a pretty restrictive definition of success. It was beyond memorable as demonstrated by how much play it still gets to this day. But none of that changes the fact that checks were being bounced left and right as opposed to cash coming in hand over fist.
  15. That about sums this up perfectly. The finish felt like a really big upset. It probably would've helped to come in with some of the surrounding background Flik mentioned regarding their draws, but I enjoyed this all the same and can't wait to move onto some of the bigger matches later in the year and '93. ****
  16. Love Bull and Hokuto, was really looking forward to this match, but it just wasn't the awesome I was looking for. Bull & Hokuto have some standout offense with Hokuto pulling out her cobra kai spin kicks while mixing spots with brawling. Bull rips out the lariat with Kyoko on the ropes before Hansen does it to Kobashi the following year. ***1/2
  17. They slap and strike early, and its not long before Kong opens Kimura up with a headbutt. The English commentary here and on the rest of this show was not welcomed. Lots of brawling and brutal stiffness here, with some fun work in the crowd. After that things slow down and things drag as they pass time until the next brawling sequence. Nothing so special but a fine intro to who these are and Kong as a monster in AJW. Definitely different from the company's spotfests. The post-match was great to see after what they did to each other here. ***
  18. Good double team work by the heels near the finish. Kudos to the crowd which seemed pretty pumped near the end of their second 30 minute match of the night. Scott ignoring the time call to signal for the frankensteiner was probably a worse finish than at the Clash with the ref telling Scott to kick out.
  19. Lots to like here, and while I may not have loved it as much as some others, I'm comfortable calling it the best iron man match I've seen. The work on Rude's ribs was better than any body part work in the Anderson/Windham SN match earlier in the month. Rude jumps out with a couple quick falls and then comes one of the highlights of the match with Rude sacrificing a fall via DQ to put Steamboat down and capitalize moments later to go up 3-1. This is how you tell a story. Steamboat's tombstone reversal for a fall was a great spot that the crowd loved. My favorite moment here was the closing sleeper, which the commentary put over as well. A classic spot and finish. I hate when matches go long for the sake of going long. This did so in tune with a distinct story and interim goals long the way. ****1/4
  20. While not the incredible brawl it was touted ass in some places at the time, this holds up pretty well and wraps up quickly enough that they actually leave you wanting more. Even if in this case more just may have been less. Hot start on the ramp leads into big bumps including Catctus taking a backdrop outside and then hitting his elbow and doing a sunset flip on the concrete. After some of these bumps the finish almost felt anti-climactic, but still a strong win for the world champion. ***1/2
  21. AA setting his sights on Sting. I'm not complaining, but it seems like they went to a lot more trouble to set up Arn as an interim challenger for a tv show or 2 given how comparably little they'd do for some big programs. But its Arn on the stick, so I'll take it.
  22. The Dangerous Alliance made an offer to Nikita and Madusa out for his answer. The storytelling seems off with this happening after War Games yet before Steamboat's US Title match with Rude, which he also wants to go after.
  23. Pretty standard promo with Pritchard again looking like a star. Nothing so special.
  24. Awesome highlights of Gilbert's prior feuds with Lawler including barbed wire, fire and loser leave town stips mixed in with promos. Really great video, even if some of the clips look dated.
  25. Fred from Stern & some other goof are out as Lawler's kids. This was as bad as the previous segment with Coraluzzo was good.
