  1. This holds up a lot better than Piper/Hart and is still a great watch today. Savage is super over as a babyface. Savage takes an awesome bump over the top and then sells for a while, coming back with some great punches that are still my some of my favorites in the business and no I don't care about Jerry Lawler or anyone else. Give me Savage's punching any day. Savage axehandles Flair into the railing where he uses the opportunity to blade himself. A Savage elbow gets 2 and Perfect pulls him out. The finish with Flair going for the figure four and slapping him was great and fit perfectly in this context. Afterwards a bloody Flair kisses Liz in a great spot and follows it with an awesome promo in the back. Savage spits some of his own insanity for good measure. ****
  2. Luger is beyond gassed here. Can you imagine them going to these lengths to sign and promote someone who couldn't debut for a year today?
  3. Definitely a seminal moment in Hart's rise as a single. Piper heels a bit early spitting at Hart. Hart fakes a shoulder injury to set up a small package that ratchets things up a bit. After another cheap shot by Piper Hart blads himself and works underneath for a while. We get an early five moves of doom but the sharpshooter is blocked. Piper thinks about cementing his heeldom with a chair but can't bring himself to do it and then comes the finish. Whether its because I started watching a few years after his big run in the mid 80s and thus didn't have any connection to him, Piper is someone who's never done it for me. Good fire, quick on the mic and clearly charismatic but I never saw him as anything special. Still a good match due to Hart but I'll always remember it because of him. ***1/2
  4. I don't think you can have anything worse than an above average mix with this bunch which makes WCW in this time such fun to rewatch. Arn bumps like a champ for Windham early and then Rude works underneath for a stretch, something he probably doesn't get enough credit for. After that we get Windham working as FIP for a while and absorbing a ton of great heel offense and double teams before Austin brings in a chair for the DQ. I'm still waiting for them to start pushing War Games during these segments. ***1/4
  5. Cornette is at one of the best hotels in town and we still don't get an appearance from the Bodies. Good stuff from Cornette yet again. Back in studio, Ron Wright's health is being upset while DWB delivers a great heel promo setting up Volunteer Slam before Brian Lee comes out to confront him. I like DWB's schtick as a heel in SMW so much moreso than as a face in Memphis.
  6. The Moondogs are out to attack DWB while Embry watches. Soon enough he enters the ring and is knocked down and attacked by the Dogs before Lawler & Jarrett are out. Nothing bad can come from including Embry in the Moondogs feud.
  7. Richard Lee interrupts a studio match as he wants Lawler & Jarrett suspended for excessive violence. Lawler & Jarrett are out shortly to attack and strip Lee before the Moondogs are out with chairs and boards. Typical fun brawl in this feud.
  8. Nature Boy! Flair tells us Liz was there and loved it once, and wants back in now. Perfect promises a centerfold at Mania which I don't think was even ever mentioned again.
  9. Closing out the Mania sell 24 hours before the big show. Liz looks spectacular here and delivers on the mic as well, at least by her standards. Seemed like she had a tough time keeping a straight face while saying she's scarred for life.
  10. Dark Patriot has to unmask if he loses. Eddie wins and DP takes off one mask to reveal another. This angle was a huge groan for me even though I knew what was coming. Decent promo from Eddie afterwards.
  11. Maybe I'm biased from his Titan days, but everything about Horowitz, from the theme music and presentation to his presence screams jobber. After a quick start they slow it down and Davis wins the LHW title in what's presented as a big upset. Liked what I saw from Davis here but just can't get into Barry's act. **1/2
  12. I loved this. Maybe this doesn't feel quite as special if you're watched 6-8 hours of shoot style, but I'm not there yet so its not a problem. Han is so quick and smooth in everything he does, from throwing spinning backfists to working various leglocks. The crowd here is also much hotter than we've seen in UWFI or PWFG which makes for a more exciting atmosphere. They work simple pro-style moves to look like finishes here, with Maeda scoring a knockdown off of a strike and punch to the abdomen before Han forces another rope break. A snap suplex from Maeda and missed dropkick from Han are probably your highspots here, and their sparing use in this context sees them come across as game changers. Great finish with Maeda grabbing the ankle after a suplex but Han countering into a kneelock of his own and cranking it for the tap. I can't wait to watch more Han. ****
  13. Completely agree. It was that moment with Bad News where you first saw him as Bret Hart rather than half of the Foundation. Then look at how long after that it took until he joined the singles ranks and was eventually pushed to the IC level. When you consider that we've probably got significantly more hours of tv in a week now than in a month in that era, you realize pretty quickly why he developed the way he did.
  14. Definitely looking forward to it.
  15. I'm firmly in the camp that doesn't see this as something incredible, primarily due to the finish. Machine has great to start and the crowd is definitely into this with a big match stipulation. Barr turns up the heel antics in the second fall and is DQ'd for using a martinete, which gives Panther the victory. I would've loved this as a finish to Panther winning a fall, but not deciding the match. It felt very flat and anti-climactic. Barr unmasks and does his own version of Funk's '83 Budokan promo post-match. This was definitely on track to becoming something great but the finish really brings it down. ***1/4
  16. Some nice bumping and fun lucha spots highlight a quick first fall, which is followed by a similarly fast second fall featuring a nice plancha by La Fiera with much of the action on the outside. La Fiera works on Atlantis' arm for much of the third fall with good focus and a great variety of spots. The finishing sequence with a creative torture rack was awesome. Thought they did a really good job of pacing this. ***1/2
  17. Such great recaps that I feel like I don't even need to watch this stuff now. But of course I will.
  18. Absolutely. Its probably a great thing for most people. Without it this place would probably devolve into the type of situation what would cause most people to abandon ship.
  19. Would love to try and show you the light, but you pretty much summed about my thoughts. I don't see the appeal.
  20. There's definitely something to be said for that, as ridiculous as it seems. I have watched and know infinitely more about pro wrestling than anyone in my life. Then I come to an awesome place like this and feel like a big rookie. Nothing wrong with that, but its often a combo of awesome and intimidating. Love it.
  21. 1 for vs. Michaels at Mind Games.
  22. My mistake, intended to reference a 30 minute match and for some reason included draw as if by reflex.
  23. The problem there is that you know its a 30 minute draw. I went into the April '92 AJ 8 man on the yearbook last night thinking maybe it goes ~35 minutes, and next thing I know its an hour and twelve minutes. Quite the Ignorance is the best sometimes.
  24. I could see them letting an angle with the divas, tag titles or just about any mid card program flounder for that reason. But Undertaker's mania match? Not buying it at all.
  25. This doesn't measure up to their previous singles matches but its still very good in its own right and feels like a big deal from the start. We get both Jumbo and Misawa countering their trademark moves early on. I think this match is a great example of what made All Japan in the era great -- even when they were working at a slow pace and not going for a classic, their selling was above and beyond what anyone else was doing and makes you feel like you're watching something special. Fun stretch run with Jumbo blocking the frog splash after Misawa elbows, Jumbo hitting his backdrop suplexes and power bomb, and even a tease of the submission with the facelock. Time expires with a 2 count on another backdrop. ***3/4
