[1991-02-23-USWA-Memphis TV] Jeff Jarrett and J.C. Ice
Rock_Of_Jericho replied to Loss's topic in February 1991
Jeff Jarrett's best promo ever... I always enjoyed Jarrett more before the country star gimmick. This promo proves that he was capable of something more than he ever showed in any of the big feds. -
[1991-01-15-AJPW-New Year Giant Series] Toshiaki Kawada vs Akira Taue
Rock_Of_Jericho replied to Loss's topic in January 1991
Had never seen this one before somehow. But I loved this. My favorite match so far of 1991. The intensity was off the charts and loved the brief shot of Jumbo watching from the back. Taue had always struck me before as kind of a bland wrestler, but I might have to reconsider finding some more of his stuff outside of the epic tags he was involved in...- 28 replies

[1990-08-11-AWA] Team Challenge Series Recap / Survivor Battle Royal
Rock_Of_Jericho replied to Loss's topic in August 1990
This is a nice novelty to see, but wow, The Russian Brute was absolutely painful to watch. One of the worst wrestlers I've ever seen. It is sad to see the AWA turn into this, but it was what it was... -
Orton's never been a favorite of mine. He's way too slow and methodical for my tastes. The only two singles matches (i.e. non-Elimination Chamber or Survivor Series elim match) I really enjoyed of his were the Foley (Backlash) and Christian (SummerSlam) ones. Other than that, he's bored me to tears inside the ring for the past decade.

[1990-07-14-WWF-Superstars] Interview: Hulk Hogan
Rock_Of_Jericho replied to Loss's topic in July 1990
Wow, to think I almost hit the skip button on my remote because it was Hogan. It's promos like this that I never believed he was capable of and shattered my image of his formula interview. The guy does have charisma, but I've never seen him cut such an emotional promo before. Well done.- 10 replies

[1990-07-07-NWA-Great American Bash] Ric Flair vs Sting
Rock_Of_Jericho replied to Loss's topic in July 1990
This may not have been a five-star match, but I still consider this a classic. It was a year in the making and the '89 & '90 Great American Bash served as bookends to this feud (at least until all of the Black Scorpion crap), with Sting and Flair beginning the year as friends and ending as enemies. I'm not sure why JYD and Orndorff got involved in this feud and the lack of Luger being there at the end was a disappointment, but this was, in effect, meant to be a passing of the torch and one of the more feel-good moments I witnessed as a child. -
It wasn't bad, but the slow-mo replays were a little disturbing...

Loved every second of this. This was something I was waiting for but wasn't quite getting it from AJ this year. Now that Misawa's out of the mask, I'm looking forward to seeing his feud with Jumbo play out now. I've never seen stuff chronologically between the two of them. Great match, though Misawa annoyed me a little by jumping in for long periods of time when he should have been standing on the apron. Either way, one of my favorites on the set so far...

[1990-05-19-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler and The Snowman
Rock_Of_Jericho replied to Loss's topic in May 1990
I don't have any idea who the Snowman is, but he's really intimidating and freaking huge. I've not seen this before, nor have I heard if it, but wow, I was blown away by the intensity involved.- 18 replies

[1990-04-13-NWA-Power Hour] Sting and Ole Anderson
Rock_Of_Jericho replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Watching this yearbook has made appreciate Ole Anderson from the standpoint of a character. He's like the mob enforcer of the Four Horsemen, always dishing out the threats. I love that he doesn't yell and scream, but stays cool, calm, and collected when spouting off his mouth. He really was an underrated character looking back.- 11 replies

[1990-04-13-WWF/AJPW Summit] Randy Savage vs Genichiro Tenryu
Rock_Of_Jericho replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
I loved this match. Surprisingly, these two worked well together and it was fun to see the AJ crowd react to Sherri outside the ring. Savage was in total dick mode the whole match and is great. This was the second time I've watched this and liked it better than the first.- 19 replies

[1990-04-01-WWF-Wrestlemania VI] Hulk Hogan vs Ultimate Warrior
Rock_Of_Jericho replied to Loss's topic in April 1990
Probably has been overhyped over the years, but it's still one of my sentimental favorites and still not a bad match in of itself. Pat Patterson deserves tons of credit, because I think without him, this might have crashed and burned, but as it happened, I still think it did what it set out to do, despite Warrior not working out in the long run. -
This one was a bit of a surprise. I've seen some FMW, mostly during the Hayabusa era, but this was a really nice brawl that I didn't expect much from...

[1990-03-23-EMLL] Jerry Estrada vs El Satanico
Rock_Of_Jericho replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
I guess I'm the minority, but I didn't see anything special in this. I mean, it wasn't bad, but I didn't come away feeling like I just watched a classic match. Granted, I haven't seen a ton of lucha, but I've seen enough to know the differences in the culture, etc. I may try to give it a re-watch while more alert and see if I enjoy it more.- 16 replies

I wonder why they made Enos and Bloom wear masks if they were just going to have them wear the same attire with a different color in relation to the Destruction Crew stint in the AWA. Weird, but it could be worse, as both would find out in the WWF later...

I would have loved to have seen a Muta face run in the NWA. He was always a favorite of mine and my friends when we watched during this period. Another part I enjoyed was seeing Sting accidentally pop Pillman in the face as he was swinging at Flair, knocking him off the cage. The match was pretty much nothing, but that wasn't the important part. This was an angle disguised as a match. One of my favorite angles of all-time, though I can see now it was a little out of left field.

A sad fact is that, despite not having seen this commercial in over twenty years, I still knew all the words.

I have to second the Terence Garvin hate. He's really annoying...and not in an entertaining way. I just want him off of my TV, but I love the four guys in the actual match, especially Lawler's epic crawl of fear across the ring. It's still a little weird all these years later watching Memphis guys wrestling in Texas, though. Decent match, but short.

The USWA stuff is fun and this was a fun match. Jarrett back in his Memphis/USWA heyday was not as loathed as he is now, but I've always had a soft spot for the guy regardless. I remember watching Jarrett and Travis teaming up one week and fighting each other the next, a lot like Lawler and Dundee used to do a lot. I always liked Travis, too, but apparently he had some personal issues which kept him from reaching a higher level. Fun match and I agree about the length being extended would have made this great. Loved the post-match brawl and the crowd still loves them some Von Erichs as they erupted for Kerry.

This is probably my third favorite Rumble, behind 1992 & 2004. The whole match was great, though it slowed down a little in this segment after the Warrior-Hogan stuff. I must have watched this entire match about a hundred times when I was a kid. Still holds up well, IMO.

I liked this one. It was pretty fun, though I thought Billy Travis's ring attire was atrocious. Couldn't help but notice that half of these guys are dead, which is pretty standard when watching any old Texas wrestling, but they still had a good promotion going. However, the difference in the crowd reaction during this period in Texas when the Von Erichs were no longer the main focus is very noticeable with this crowd, who are into the match, but not on the levels they used to be... Chris Adams is a guy I came to appreciate more during the World Class viewing and he's still awesome here. Dundee is fine, but I like watching him be a heel better. Watching Adams and Embry fight each other was hilarious. This was the period of USWA/Memphis when I tuned out, so its nice to go back watch some of the stuff, anyway. Fun match.

[1990-01-06-NWA-Power Hour] Arn Anderson vs Great Muta
Rock_Of_Jericho replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
I liked this one better than the Eaton-Flair match, which puts me in the minority, but I think it stems from the fact that I never believed Eaton was going to win while I thought either guy could take this one. Plus, it had a title change, which makes it memorable in of itself during these years. -
[1990-01-15-WWF-MSG, NY] The Rockers vs Powers of Pain
Rock_Of_Jericho replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
I was surprised by this one. I had never seen it before and I'm torn between this one and the Rockers-Brain Busters series, because this was just as good. everyone played their role to perfection. My only complaint was that I wasn't ready for it to be over. Fun match.- 38 replies

[1990-01-16-UWF-with '90] Kazuo Yamazaki vs Yoji Anjoh
Rock_Of_Jericho replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
Yeah, I don't care for the shoot-style, either, which is why the only 80's set I haven't purchased was the Other Japan stuff. I didn't hate this, but it wasn't my cup of tea. Still, I understand why it was included, but I have a feeling these types of matches won't leave me enthralled.- 19 replies
