  3. So for this week's podcast, with Joe Vs. Balor in a cage on the horizon for Wednesday's NXT Takeover, we want to look at the history of the cage match, and are looking to ask - what is your favourite match to ever take place within a steel cage concept? This can be any match from any promotion, whichever one you draw to the most, and can be one of the traditional cage match's siblings, such as Hell In A Cell, War Games, Elimination Chamber, etc. And of course, the major question is why? Why does your personal favourite stand out amongst the rest? As always, the best contributions will be read on the air and you'll be credited accordingly. So what is it for you? EDIT - Our show talking all about Favourite Cage Matches Ever, featuring many of your contributions, is now online and available to listen to at the following link: http://squaredcirclegazette.podbean.com/mf/web/eq2jp8/SCG_Radio_87_-_Favourite_Cage_Matches_Ever_.mp3
  4. I have no idea what WWE is thinking. They can say it doesn't matter, wrestling is a work, etc, but if the guy that ended the streak and is a monster that hasnt put anybody over since gets KO'd in 2 minutes, thats devastating to the Lesnar image. NJPW proved how badly this can hurt a guy

  7. Of course, no offense taken at all, constructive criticism is appreciated, especially for a type of show like this that is fairly ambitious - 4 people debating and booking over a year within 2 hours is going to have problems, and glad you enjoyed it. I think its part of a stream of consciousness committee discussion to have stuff that seems thrown together. I guess the counter to the tag teams point is that in 1991 they threw together Earthquake and Tugboat, DiBiase and IRS, and Owen and Koko in much the same fashion. Two of the teams you mention that we put together were to create scenarios where LOD wouldnt flounder, so I suppose its looking at whether the end justifies the means. I am a fan of Slaughter, but not at the top in 91. I don't have a problem with him being in the upper midcard mix, but I think history showed that him as top guy for any length of time in 91 wasn't for the best. Flair is such a tricky one. I love the Rumble 92 as much as anyone, and God knows I wouldnt want to lose that, but at the same time, if it takes you five months to do something great with NWA World Champion Ric Flair with title in hand, you've ballsed up somewhere. And they did. I think an overlooked element to the Royal Rumble 92 (overlooked because the finished product was so good) is that Flair lost a lot of steam and needed the megapush to reheat him. Honestly, there's probably a way to bring him in strong and still get the great Rumble in there, but that's hindsighty in its own way I suppose - only keeping it in because we know it was so good. Hogan and Jake you have to make sense of, granted, but honestly, I think if I had stumbled in to that position in January 91 and my mission was to ixnay the Gulf War stuff, the first thing to do is keep Slaughter away from Hogan, which doesnt leave you with natural options...
  8. So, for this week's podcast, we're looking to discuss different people's first memories of pro wrestling, and would like to get some feedback to hear yours. The question being not only what your first ever memory of exposure to wrestling, but what was your first impression, how did you feel about it at the time, how did it influence you as a fan, and in hindsight, how do you feel about that same first moment? As always, the best contributions will be read on the air and we'll be crediting you accordingly. So what was it for you? 9. Part and parcel of wrestling's constant evolution. I'm sure Vader himself got plenty of that when he decided he was going to debut the moonsault - a guy that size doing that move flies in the face of what many think a guy like Vader should be. As for the match in question, incredible athletics, but I hate the style. The hitting the ropes and double handspring backflip staredown spot made me cringe. Will taking a DVD on the apron and coming right back for the next move is hideous. They could do half as much, sell it better and it'd be a better match. But the live crowd loved it and plenty of people are praising it as something special, so it worked to them. But emotionally its a throwway, and will be forgotten as the next athletic spectacle with little to no drama comes along.

  12. So for this week's podcast we are returning to our booking committee format for a discussion Rebooking the WWF in 1991, a very interesting time that began the downturn for the company. We're looking to get some feedback on what you think needed to be done to make things succeed during a period where popularity fell. Starting as everything was on January 1st 1991, what do you book for WrestleMania 7? Do you run with the Slaughter Gulf War angle? What do you do with Warrior's WWF Title run? What do you do with the incoming Sid Justice and Ric Flair? What do you do with the titles? Where does Hogan fit in? As always, we'll be reading the best feedback/ideas on the show and crediting you accordingly. So what would you have done? 18. I'll take Brian Clarke just based on the fact that Crush was pushed and pushed in different incarnations for years and he always fell short of the mark. Every time. His 1998 overexposure in WCW was appalling, the fact he didn't want to sell for Flair or lose to Goldberg is laughable in itself, but when paired up for Kronik, Adams is far and away the weaker link of the team. God, the match with Kane and Taker is horrible, and Adams' individual performance is all time bad. His "head into the post" on the outside might be the laziest thing of the year. To the contrary, when Wrath got his one big push in WCW in 1998 beating people with the Meltdown, he did get over and start getting reactions that made you think that not only was it working, but they could have done more with the crowd interest. And I've literally never felt that about Crush.

  21. What a complete injustice that outcome was. My feeling at the time, and I'm glad you echoed it on the rewatch, is that Raven was working so hard to build that match up, and everything Jarrett did was just rank average and unexciting. One of those matches where it becomes blindingly obvious what the real priority is in a company and just kills interest as a result - a red hot challenger with momentum, on a roll with his promos and efforts between the ropes with fresh matches on top if he wins, and a struggling babyface who, if setting the world on fire is what you hope for, was doing the equivalent of bringing the portable heater in from the garage, the one that feels like an asthmatic blowing at you through a straw and smells like death. Could have done without the ECW alliance, especially since they would fail to achieve their goal anyway on the big night - why bother. But that's vintage Vinny.
  22. Thank you both, much appreciated and glad you enjoyed. And yeh, for a subject that seemed on the surface like a possible downer, this ended up being a blast - I didn't read the feedback ahead of time on this occasion so I was totally caught off-guard on a couple of them, yours included.
  23. So for this week's podcast, we're looking to talk about guilty pleasures in wrestling, and are looking for your contributions on wrestlers, matches, angles, feuds, shows, whatever it may be, that for you is a guilty pleasure - someone or something that typically gets plenty of derision and scorn, but deep down you enjoy, perhaps against your better judgement. And of course, please explain why you enjoy this particular person or thing, and your perspective as one of the few who takes enjoyment in it. As always, the best contributions will be read on the show and you'll be credited accordingly. So what's your guilty pleasure in wrestling and why? EDIT - Our show on Wrestling's Guilty Pleasures, featuring many of your contributions is now online and available to listen to at the following link: http://squaredcirclegazette.podbean.com/mf/web/yqebpp/SCG_Radio_81_-_Wrestlings_Guilty_Pleasures.mp3

Brisco Evening Gown Match, a litany of WCW Hulk Hogan bouts, the Bash 91 Scaffold Match, TNA's finer contributions, Triple H Vs. Scott Steiner, Undertaker Vs. Giant Gonzalez, Warrior Vs. Goldust, Lesnar Vs. Goldberg, Cole Vs. Lawler and countless more abominations to boot. A really fun show this week, check it out and let us know what you think!
