We've been talking about TNA somewhat, basically whether or not a wrestler's TNA work should count for them against them, or whatever? I'm not the most versed on TNA, it's pretty much a blindspot for me. I know we have at least a couple of TNA supporters on this board, BigBadMick you're the main one I'm thinking of. Any chance that at some point you could put together a sort of watch list for people who have been nominated who did spend time in TNA? I know it's cherry picking to just be looking at their good work in TNA, but I'd rather have some work to go off of than no work.

That's in my YouTube pile and coming up pretty soon, I'm optimistic it will be pretty great, but also a little cautious.
-
I'm pretty psyched to eventually start digging into Puerto Rico, especially the Hansen stuff.
-
I think what helps him a lot in my eyes is him being the best big man and that he surrounded his peak years with other great stuff.
-
He switched between shoot and straight pro wrestling, and I'd argue that he was able to change his style from WCW main event to WWF main event.

I'm waiting, very patiently, for the 80s PR set, have a feeling it will effect my GOAT rankings big time.

Hmmm, I appreciate what you're saying, but I think the stop point is a must. There's no reason this can't be an ongoing project where we update it every five years, but there should be a definite point where we stop and offer the current list. If not in turns into a never ending promise with no payoff. Kind of like GnR and their Chinese Democracy album, where they kept working on it and working on it to the point where it became a joke and when it did finally see the light of day the music world had moved on. If we keep this going for too long without producing a list I think the same thing could, and probably will, happen.

The thing is, these guys won't ever be GOAT material if you're not watching them. I'm giving everyone a fair shake, because I do believe that there are recent indie guys (including at least one on the list provided) who belong in the GOAT discussion.

From that list Ki is the only one right now that would make my list. As I watch more footage of some of the others I could see them moving into contention. A few wrestlers not mentioned who I am legitimately considering for my list are Flash Flanagan, Super Dragon, and Cheerleader Melissa.

Yes please.

[GWE] What skillsets and experiences do you value?
BillThompson replied to Loss's topic in Pro Wrestling
I'm not too high on versatility. It's a great trait for a wrestler to have, but in the end I can't see punishing someone for a lack of versatility. If they tried to spread their wings and failed, sure, that is a knock against them. However, if they knew they were good-great at a specific style or match type and that is what they stuck at, well, more power to them for knowing their limitations. -
Sheamus is someone I was initially pretty sour on. His personality and the way he carried himself in the ring came across to me as far too fake. However, I've come around on Sheamus lately ad I enjoy what he does in the ring a great deal. I'm not sure if he'll make my top 100, but I am looking forward to giving some of his past work a second chance.

I'll be honest, I don't have many, or any, problems with the board. I don't think we're guilty of the hive mind mentality, simply because we all seem to disagree on one thing or another. In general I think this board has done a splendid job, at least since I've been here, of handling things internally. I had a problem with some verbiage bring used recently so I voiced my displeasure, the issue was addressed, and everyone moved on peacefully. I love the long discussion topics, our tendency to analyze everything, and the sense of community that has been built. PWO is what I look for in a wrestling board.

No shot of making my list. I enjoyed the Warriors well enough, and I certainly was impressed by their aura. But, they were never all that great in the ring and as the years went by they were continually exposed as not being able to do much beyond a sprint/squash/brawl formula.

Just watched that the other day, and while it had some rough patches I still thought it was really great.

Off the top of my head I can think of the Benoit match early in their respective WCW runs. There were a lot of instances in his WWF run, and and I recall him almost decapitating RVD when he returned to ECW. The Rey point is an interesting one as I genuinely can't recall him doing that. Maybe that has something to do with his size and it never seeming like he was smashing into guys even when he was.
-
From a longevity point Hansen has to be right there with those two, maybe even Funk too depending on how one rates his 90s work. I'd say Santo as well, but I know he doesn't factor in for you since he's a Luchador.
-
How much of that brutality is due to him messing up moves? I say quite a lot, and I say that as someone who generally enjoys Scorpio as a worker. However, in watching him there's a pattern of just about every other match he overshoots on something or doesn't take the care he should and he smashes someone in the face, the stomach, etc. in an unprotected fashion because he got sloppy with the move.
-
Well, they won't come close to my list, so that's why I haven't nominated them.

Good - Bobby Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon throughout the year, but mainly their Rumble match call. I don't care what misgivings others have with Gorilla or Bobby, I've always loved them as a team and their Rumble work has always had a special place in my wrestling world. Bad - Jimmy Garvin, just awful in every regard the entire year, whether in the ring, doing vignettes, or simply breathing, Garvin managed to look bad all the time. Ugly - Rocco. I'm not a fan of LoD, but giving them a ventriloquist dummy as their new driving force, horrible in the way that only wrestling can be horrible.

Oldest/Earliest Wrestling You Are Watching For The Project
BillThompson replied to TravJ1979's topic in 2016
I'll probably watch some pre-1950s footage, depending on the wrestler. I'll definitely be checking out the Rogers, Thesz, O'Conner, and Gagne I can find from the 50s-70s. -
Great show guys. Only gripe I have is that I think you're far off base Parv on the criteria Matt, and I, are using to judge the greatest of all time. It's not based on on sort of point or ranking of skills system. It's a systemic breakdown, at least on my end, but it's about the whole package that said breakdown forms of the wrestler. I'm not going to be judging someone's selling against someone else's selling, but rather the complete package that is wrestler A versus the complete package that is wrestler B. Maybe Matt has strayed from using the same criteria as I have, but I haven't seen him wrote anywhere on here that he has.

Can't say I'm on that site but I grew up playing SNK and Capcom fighting games, and I still play them to this day. -
When did the IC title nose dive for you?
BillThompson replied to Sidebottom's topic in Pro Wrestling
Vader in 1995 is another great example of this. They made his chase, and eventual capture of, the US title a major factor in why he should be considered the number one contender to the heavyweight title. -
