  1. Piper's got such a dangerous look in his eye, and he shows no fear at any point. All the passive NWO members play their role really well, even their facial expressions, no one's laughing or making stupid faces, everyone just stays quiet and still until it's time to attack. I'm re-watching this feud right now and it's better than I remember it. This might actually best booked feud in NWO history. The Starrcade match works so we'll see if there's anything crummy between now and then. And I'm watching the show as I type this and Jimmy Hart just came out wearing a jacket with a MISFITS skull on the back! Righteous.
  2. It never occurred to me that this could be an extended squash, as Rey gets in a good amount of signature offense and gets some really near falls, like others have said. I always looked at it like Ultimo Dragon getting a rare opportunity to work against a smaller opponent, and takes full advantage by wrestling like a Steiner Brother. That being said, seeing it as an extended squash I might actually like the match better. Out of their three matches in 96 this is the one where Dragon really asserts his power and lays in some stiff kicks and brutal, heavy offense throughout. Plus, Dragon has the 8 belts at this point, he better be dominant.
  3. I actually really like that Bischoff's turn is kind of lost. Like the camera isn't even necessarily centered on Bischoff, and there's so much going on, it feels more real. It really comes off like Heenan and Tanay don't know what's going on. It's rare when wrestling assumes intelligence in their audience, and while this was more likely just poor execution and production, I'd like to think this is one of those times.
  4. If you hear someone else's music during a match, do not look at the entrance. You will be rolled up for the pin.
  5. Sawyer's howls from beyond are absolutely inhuman sounding. You can really feel everyone feeding off the crowd, and having the babyfaces on top for most of the match really worked in this environment I think. I watched this match recently, maybe on the WCW 24/7 stream and was shocked when comparing it to the Clash match. I thought Muta looked good here and worked hard for the little bit he was in. He at least had energy in the ring. FIP Flair is so natural that I forget how rare it actually is. Babyface Enforcer Arn has such a cool vibe, totally different than the cool heel Enforcer. A tough, stern babyface like that is really nuanced and great. Great match overall, don't care about the DQ.
  6. This feels very gritty for All Japan. Very odd. I'd like to see the full match, as I've been a fan of Fuyuki so far as a weasel and seeing Tenryu get pissed off never gets old. This feels much older than 1990.
  7. Pretty lewd camera shot at the end for 1990. Very uncomfortable.
  8. I still love the stalemate between Warrior and Hogan. I say "still" but this is only my 2nd time watching this one. WWF has always felt like such comfort food. I wasn't a WWF kid but it's still got such built in nostalgia.
  9. Man the family is looking PRIMED, but what's this, trouble in the family? I love Andre Talking and no one really listening.
  10. WWF/E is never subtle, so that's why they keep repeating the pinfall attempts throughout I reckon, to remind the crowd about the gimmick? The Hammer Jammer vs ankle brace thing is really cheesy but I've never seen anything like that before and I'm pretty into it. New to me, if nothing else. Something I love and probably mention with every post are very disparate elements colliding together. So something really goofy like the Hammer Jammer in a match where two old men are punishing each other really works for me.
  11. Interesting point about being on tv losing its novelty. next time I watch something modern I'll have to keep an eye out but it definitely seems like it happens less these days.
  12. Evangelical preacher and motivational speaker usually use the same prose at times. In my experience, both also sometimes live in vans down by the river.
  13. I completely forgot Tony was in WWF for a year and was really disoriented as to what was going on. I hate the hair cutting in the ring. I'm always afraid someone is going to get hurt, be it scissors or shears. The refs look like triplets.
  14. Warrior hunched over flexing next to Gene at the end is so unnatural and creepy.
  15. Wait I thought this was just part of the same segment as the other one/JYD. Who cares, dad jokes and that cell phone, I'll buy that for a dollar.
  16. Man Lawler works this so smart. As anyone who was watching JYD's WCW run around this time knows he can barely move and they gave him a title shot. Here it's more of a spectacle and really the best way to have a JYD match. He's so sad to watch and he's hardly able to walk let alone wrestle. I love anytime a wrestler cuts a promo during a match. Hide The Chain worked for me, I popped when the chai went flying. This is Terrance Garvin on color commentary? He stinks.
  17. Double post, but Jarrett has always had the biggest heel look going. Even here as a youngster, he's got crazy ultra- feathered hair, drives a white 80s corvette, white jeans and white boots. So good.
  18. Lawler's back on his phone, talking to Christie Brinkley no doubt. I got excited thinking Lawler was going to bury monster trucks, but he went another way with it. Lost something there for me.
  19. I'm no big animal rights activist or anything, but every Jake Roberts segment with Damian makes me so sad. I remember Jake saying how many different snakes he used over the years and it was some insane number. The horrors those snakes must have endured....
  20. Awesome segment. I have very little idea who is on the roster at this time so it's cool to see everyone. I just wish it were longer and they'd let everyone have a promo. Oh, we get a Honky Tonk Man promo! *****
  21. Could Brother Love be considered a proto-Matt Foley (motivational speaker)? The slicked back hair and beet red complexion lead me to believe so. Interesting to see that the Rumble is presented the same way today, with only a very few people being presented as a contender to win.
  22. Oh yeah that would make sense, the timeline is right.
  23. Tenryu is feeling lonely, feeling mean, feeling hard. When Jumbo tags in and knees Kawada, I don't know if that's legit or not but if not Kawada does one of the better sells of that move I've ever seen. Tenryu continues the protective older brother gimmick from the previous tag. Great camera angle for Tenryu freaking out on the gound. Just staying on the hard cam and you can't see exactly what's going on but you see a table flying at some point. I didn't like this quite as much as the previous tag match, mostly because I really liked Fuyuki playing the weasel there. This one was wilder though. Tenyru and Jumbo, like what can you even say? Unreal.
  24. Buzz Sawyer is 30 years old here??Q! Between him and Michael Hayes around this time, I'm all of a sudden not feeling so bad about myself. My base for anything involving Arn is "pretty good" I'd say this is solidly pretty good. was really excited for this when I saw it on the set, and I don't and I don't want to say I was disappointed, but I think like Chad said, a little more of a comeback and it would have been there for me. But when Arn throws up the 4 really forcefully with that pained look on his face, I got stoked.
  25. The calmness of these Funk's Grill segments is startling. So after this run in NWA, Foley went to UWF correct? Has he ever talked about this period before and what he did to improve so much between 90-91?
