For me what slightly hurts Funk is that because of his size compared to other big time brawlers I tend to see him more sympathetically, even in a heel role. Hansen, while not as chaotic as Funk, is physically more intimidating and comes off as more purely mean spirited.

This was one I was really excited about watching on the Network, as I hadn't seen it in years. Didn't hold up super well but I love the dream match aspect to this where you take the four biggest guys in the company and throw them together to fight each other. I really appreciated that it never devolved into the 1 on 1 with one guy laying on the ground thing then they switch, but maybe that's more of a modern thing I don't know.

[1996-09-22-WWF-Mind Games] Shawn Michaels vs Mankind
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in September 1996
What was the point of the fake botch spot? Just a worked shoot thing for the sake of it? It's very confusing. Anyway, this is probably my favorite wwf match of all time, and I LOVE Foley going to the mat.- 38 replies

This would have been simultaneously thrilling and unbelievably frustrating to be at live. I saw someone else say this in another NWO thread, but that's a pretty bold move to sabotage your own show for the sake of an angle/rating. Kind of a microcosm of WCWs entire history when you think about it.

Was there a big screen with this setup or were the people in the crowd just standing around looking at nothing the whole time?

[1993-02-28-AJPW-Excite Series] Stan Hansen vs Toshiaki Kawada
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in February 1993
So this is my favorite match of all time and the first Stan Hansen Japan match I saw and one of the first puro matches I saw. There's a moment earlier in the match when Hansen is kicking Kawada on the ground and I'll never forget the moment I realized he wasn't stomping when he kicked. That was a revelation and changed the whole match for me. Really disorienting and brilliant. I play a lot of music and whenever I play at a place with video capabilities I always make the sound man project this match during our set.- 28 replies

[1996-07-07-WCW-Bash at the Beach] Dean Malenko vs Disco Inferno
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in July 1996
Disco Inferno's commitment to the gimmick is so impressive. This match is right up my alley. I love when a lower card match comes out of nowhere to be important within its own structure. all I really care about in wrestling is guys working hard and telling a story with a match, and this just happens to be with one of the more ridicoulous characters of the era.- 7 replies

Really interesting poll because it's kind of a jack of all trades vs master brawler. I chose Hansen purely for his cardio conditioning. Every match of his is amazing for the sheer amount of continuous movement alone. Unfortunately that's also one of the criticisms against him as that's part of him swallowing up opponents, but oh well.

It's so funny to see what things Meltzer zeros in on to complain about. Him complaining about the names in the tombstones for one of the Halloween Havoc shows comes to mind.

So on the other side, my vote for worst play by play of all time is Eric Bischoff. Absolutely deplorable.

I find Striker's enthusiasm intoxicating.

I find Ross and Schiavone both tried way too hard to get everything over as the biggest deal in the world. In watching some old WCW as of late, Ross commentating solo has me so frustrated that I've gone without sound - I just find him grating unless he has someone with a personality to bounce off of (Jim Cornette, Michael Hayes). Weird to think of WWF commentating as more low-key, but it was, and it's much more pleasant. Yeah Ross solo is straight punishment. I feel like Tony was able to cool him off a bit at the right times so when he starts really freaking out it was really impactful.

This seems like an extension of the consistently poor production values WCW had compared to WWF. The goofy gimmicks just felt so second rate, like the pyrotechnics or the stage setups. As far as commentary, my vote is for the Ross/Schiavone team of 1991. Schiavone as a color man did great explaining the logic behind the moves being done in the ring, and Ross was toning down the college sports talk and just called the matches. No one trying to get themselves over, you barely notice they're there, and I mean that in the best way possible.

[1990-01-07-NWA-Main Event] Ric Flair vs Bobby Eaton
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
Eaton is really grinding with his neck work. I love a match with brutal looking work that's not just stiff strikes. That's really where the art comes in. This is an easy pick for me over the 2/3 falls match from the Clash in '91.- 32 replies

[1992-05-17-WCW-Wrestle War '92] Brian Pillman vs Tom Zenk
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in May 1992
This match solidifies my lament that Zenk never had a heel run in WCW. He's so hateable is several different ways. Would have made a good member of the York Foundation.- 21 replies

One thing I'll say about Finlay is his grimace when he bares his teeth with the gap in it is really great. It's vicious when he's on offense and painful when he's selling.

[1992-02-29-WCW-Superbrawl II] Jushin Liger vs Brian Pillman
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in February 1992
this was a huge match for me when I finally saw the vhs as a kid. I had seen a Liger promo video on a Clash or TV show or something and really had him built up in my mind. The summersault to the outside was really game changing. It was my first instance of having a favorite match. I think the work holds up still.- 22 replies

I might be the only person on the planet who is excited about a 4th Ishii/Makabe match. The others have been so underwhelming I'm excited at the opportunity of them surprising everyone. About the booking, there are few things I'm worse at than predicting booking, especially New Japan booking, so I generally have no comments on booking practices and almost always subscribe to the "wait and see" philosophy. So with that said, I'm waiting and seeing with Kushida. What are the chances they're telling a long story with him trying to be the ace of the division? Last year he came up short in the BOSJ final, won the title on a fluke that probably wasn't even supposed to happen, then immediately loses it. This year he wins BOSJ, wins the belt, has only one successful defense, then loses in almost exactly the same time frame. So now maybe next year is his year. I hate being able to predict what I think "should" happen or what the obvious outcomes are, it's a righteous buzzkill for my wrestling watching, so I thoroughly enjoyed being surprised by the two singles matches on the show. Now let's see what happens with the Goto vs Nakamura match.

[1993-02-21-WCW-Superbrawl III] Great Muta vs Barry Windham
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in February 1993
Disappointing match, and it really brought down what was an otherwise very good show. I haven't watched this match in a few years, but I remember thinking Windham was dogging it in this match too. Was this purely Muta bringing it down?- 14 replies

Is this the episode where Hogan debuts the phrase "Anything less would be..... civilized."? He tried really hard to get that one over for a while. Really stupid.

[1996-08-10-WCW-Hog Wild] Chris Benoit vs Dean Malenko
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
First of all, as Malenko's music plays, the camera pans over the crowd and there is a man with huge SS bolts on his t-shirt. Anyway, this is my favorite WCW match of all time, and my 2nd favorite wrestling match period. All of the objectively negative things about the match are what make it special to me. At the time, my parents wouldn't order me any of the ppvs because they thought wrestling was stupid and we were too poor, so I had to watch them scrambled and listen to the audio. So hearing the match being called was especially surreal because I didn't understand why the 3rd or 4th match was lasting so long and why there were overtimes. As for the match, two of the best wrestlers in the world, outside in what must have been pretty gnarly heat and humidity, surrounded by a few hundred scumraid biker trash who are uninterested at best, angry and actively booing the match just for existing. I think the hitman Malenko narrative actually does work because Jimmy Hart hired him to beat Benoit, and Malenko goes for several pinning attempts early in the match and Benoit wants to escape with a win, so they just going off on each other and most of the suplexes and high spots are followed by pinning attempts. Although Tony comments on how he thinks Hart maybe wants Malenko to "eliminate" Benoit, so that kind of ruins it. Oh well. The selling, or lack of, doesn't offend me because there wasn't really extensive limb work that was ignored and they are visibly beat and struggling between moves during the later stages. But the more important kind of meta narrative is that no one cares about these two men. The announce team doesn't know what's going on and are joking throughout the match. The crowd is bored and mad. Nick Patrick doesn't even care because he's on the NWO's payroll at this point! It's entirely inappropriate in almost every way. There's no reason for the match to go into overtime. There's no stakes at all. There's a crummy finish. There's really no reason for them to be working as hard as they are. But it doesn't matter because they just out and have the match that they want to have despite everyone else. It comes off really hateful towards the crowd and the event as a whole. It's kind of beautiful when you think about it. Like, in the midst of utterly stupid conditions two people are able to express their art so effectively.- 18 replies

[1996-08-10-WCW-Hog Wild] Hulk Hogan vs The Giant
drew wardlaw replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
LOVE Hogan's stalling for 5+ minutes at the beginning. Falls into the angle-more-than-a-match for me, but this is a pretty classic one and it made me furious as a child.
