#280 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/ I agree, Akiyama looked really impressive here based on his experience level. I'm sure Kobashi, at his level, had something to do with that (not with his actual individual performance, but more along the lines of directing traffic). I thought Kobashi was great in his role here. There were some really good strike exchanges from Jun and Kobashi. I also thought Kikuchi was quite entertaining on offense with his explosiveness at times, but also his selling during certain spots. I got the impression that Kobashi was the director, and this was built to be a Kikuchi showcase, while in turn building Jun and getting him over. I think they accomplished what they were trying to do with Jun, and I'm glad it didn't end at the doomsday device. I guess for me, it really put him over more, and it's what pushed the drama of the match from good to really good IMO. ***3/4

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/ #281 Love watching Dustin Rhoses wrestling tag matches (specifically as a babyface). He doesn't disappoint here, not sure he ever does, but lock this in as another really good showing for Dustin. Larry Z was super entertaining too. ****

[1991-10-24-AJPW-October Giant Series] Jumbo Tsuruta vs Toshiaki Kawada
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in October 1991
http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/ #284 Gotta say I pretty much mirror OJ's thoughts on this one. It was hard for me to feel connected to this one at times. There just isn't anything coming out of it that I think will stick with me. Though, there were some parts I loved like Jumbo's selling and the work on the head/neck of Jumbo from Kawada.- 12 replies

[1996-03-31-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Kenta Kobashi
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in March 1996
http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/ #285 Great spot where Misawa is brutalizing Kobashi with chops and forearms, and Kobashi steps back with a glare... PISSED. They were really going at each other here. Kobashi's neck chops are sick, and they have some great counters thrown in throughout. Misawa's selling down the stretch is phenomenal and Kobashi is oozing charisma through great facial expressions. This was great. ****1/4 -
http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/ #286 - Another one I watched not too long ago in the YB, and it's easy to remember how intense this was. I remember loving the third fall and the arm work.

[1990-11-09-WWA-Tom Robinson Benefit] Jerry Lawler vs Eddie Gilbert
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in November 1990
http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/ #291 Yeah this was fun. I'm with you on Eddie's punches equaling that of Lawler, well except for that last monster punch Jerry nails him with... that was fantastic! That is a really interesting point about Gilbert being in Memphis when Vince came in and being a Lawler type heel in the WWF. I would have loved to have seen that.- 11 replies

#294 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/ I had a blast watching the team of Hansen and Baba today. I loved the double big boot, then Hansen throwing Kobashi into the corner for another big boot from Baba. Then, Kobashi fires up for a slap exchange with Hansen. Love it. Hansen was great here, slapping Kobashi around after he has him down on the mat. He also sells the Misawa elbows so damn well. There's one, where he falls down to the mat, raises his head up a little bit... looks like he is dying and falls back down. Great stuff. I really thought Kobashi worked his ass off too. Great FIP - all over the place and fired up when he is on offense. His moonsault looked great, and what an awesome false finish that was. Baba worked really hard, and both Misawa and Kobashi helped him in looking great. This is a really fun match. It's definitely a great match too.

[1991-11-22-CMLL] Los Brazos vs MS-1 & Pirata Morgan & El Satanico
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in November 1991
#305 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/2/ I really love Satanico. I'm still growing when it comes to Lucha, but through the 90 YB and the other highly pimped stuff I've seen, he and Atlantis are currently my top 2 personal favorites. The finish of the first fall was really entertaining. After the second fall, I loved the tower of heels. Satanico was the glue in this great match, but really good performances all around.- 11 replies

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/2/ #306 I liked this one when I went through the 90 YB. Takada did standout to me, and I was hit or miss with UWF too. It took me a few mins to really get into it, but I ended up really enjoying this one. Nothing to add that hasn't been said, but I'll say coming out the end of 1990 it wasn't one of the matches that left a lasting impression with me.

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/2/ #307 Liked this a lot when I ran across it in the YB. Waltmen talked a little bit about his matches with Jerry at this time when he was on Talk is Jericho podcast not too long ago. These matches, and their reputation, are part of what helped him get on the WWF radar. Jericho said he heard about them when these matches were going on, and all the guys talked about how great they were. Waltmen said Wade Keller was a big part of the word about him and Jerry getting out.

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/2/ #308 Jumbo is a monster here. He's fantastic. I was glued to his performance. Kikuchi showed a lot of fire too. Loved him off the hot tag. There's a match on 10/20 where Misawa is in the stands and Kobashi has taken his place on this team. Jumbo and company target the nose of Kobashi the entire match. The Misawa save out of nowhere at the end is one of the best of its kind. He's totally off camera, and you almost forget he's there. Great match.

For now... 60's - Need to see more 70's - I want to see more instead of just listing something. I'll probably watch anything posted here that I haven't seen before. I do love that Funk/Tsuruta match and I'm itching to check out the Valentine/Backlund match listed above. I'll get to all of them. My biggest need is the Dundee/Lawler match elliott mentioned - big fan of all their matches, but I have not seen that one yet. 80's - Steamboat/Flair - Clash 6 - (4/2/89) 90's - Misawa vs. Kawada (06/03/94) - but it's close with Kobashi/Misawa (01/20/1997) 00's - Misawa/Kobashi (03/01/2003) - close to Atlantis vs. Villano III (03/17/2000) 10's - John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar (04/29/2012)

[2000-08-06-NOAH-Departure II] Kenta Kobashi vs Jun Akiyama
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in August 2000
I decided to check this out today based on the MOTD discussion going on. I watched Kobashi's full title run about a year ago, but I had not seen this match before. 07/24/1998 is one of my favorite matches, so I jumped at this when I saw it mentioned. I don't know how it slipped through the cracks until now. Kobashi really DESTROYS the neck of Akiyama throughout this match. You've got some hard-hitting chops in the corner, and some nasty looking stomps to the neck. Once Akiyama gets a dropkick on the right leg of Kobashi, his focus mostly shifts there. And, Kobashi sells it wonderfully (through expressions, beating feeling into it, limping, etc.). For my taste, it's as good as it gets. I can't put over his selling performance enough throughout this match. I guess I'm saying, IMO, his performance is what carries the match to greatness. In 07/24/1998, it's probably a closer call for match MVP, but I could definitely see it being Akiyama in that one. I prefer the 98 match to this one, but I still think this is a classic. There's great focus on the neck by Kobashi. I loved after one suplex didn't take Kobashi down, the second time Akiyama came to it, he bounced up and delivered a second one to Kobashi without breaking stride. He knew Kobashi would bounce up, so ... not this time Kobashi. ****3/4- 19 replies

[2008-02-23-ROH-6th Anniversary Show] Bryan Danielson vs Nigel McGuinness
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in February 2008
I had seen this before, but decided to check it out again based on the MOTD discussion going on today on the board. While, I don't think it reached a MOTD level for me, I do think it was really great. Some of the stuff Timbo noted above was helpful in understanding all that was going on, because I'm sure watching in context, and attached to the story back in the day, probably brought the emotion out a little more in this. Some of the things I loved about it were the rolling through German, the headbutts (and reason behind them noted above), and the final blow - that final elbow was some stiff shit. It looked great. I think I'd go ****1/2 for me, but I think if I watched the build and became more connected to it, it's possible it would go higher. It seems like there are some little things attached to the story that came into play, and some call backs that I was not privy to. Great match.- 6 replies

The first ever match between the two. AJ surprisingly puts the British Heavyweight Championship on the line right before the match starts. It's a very submission based match with Styles giving enough to Liger to make it seem competitive. Liger try's to keep away from the Styles Clash, but he can't... ***1/4 to ***1/2

This is just a great matchup of different personalities and styles here. You have the heel, Pete Dunne. He's excellent with facial expressions. He's pulling on and biting fingers. He's hard hitting and throwing out painful submissions. Then you have Ricochet. He's the explosive babyface, and his offense is impressive athletically while remaining very crisp. This turned out to be a REALLY good match, at probably around ***3/4 if I had to use rating to show what I thought of it. IMO, Ricochet was very impressive with his maneuvers and threw out some sweet uppercuts at one point, but the really good portion was carried on the heel antics, facial expressions, and offense of Dunne. I feel like when Dunne was on offense, he gave the crowd more time to let the things he was doing sink in, while Ricochet was a little more on to the next thing. But hey, he did do that beautifully. I liked Dunne kicking the hand away of Ricochet when he offered to shake hands at the beginning. Good stuff.

This opens up great with some taunting back and forth. We get some nice focused work on the left arm of Chris Hero from Marty Scurll. A really nasty looking stomp to the arm of Hero is delivered by Scurll. Eventually, this leads to a really good comeback from Chris Hero and of course some very stiff shots. Hero, at one point decides to hit a moonsault, which he misses and Scurll gets fired up taking this into another gear. Scrull had a really awesome reversal of one of Hero's big elbows, that gets Hero on his back and he drops him back down on the worked over arm. We eventually get the MONSTER elbow from Hero, followed by more devastating looking blows. Scurll throws in some really impressive looking matwork, playing off the armwork again, that put him back on top. Then they just get to pounding each other with slaps and strikes. I didn't like that Scurll had to wrap his arms around the legs of Hero to take a piledriver, but it looked awesome on delivery. Scurll gets the crowd to go quiet ....shhhh....and breaks the finger of Hero. Hero ends up hitting a piledriver from the top for the W. Really good story there. This was fantastic! Both guys delivered the goods. ****1/4 to ****1/2

[1996-09-05-AJPW-Summer Action Series II] Stan Hansen vs Kenta Kobashi
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in September 1996
#310 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/2/ I like Chad's description of this. It really does have the feel of a shootout, and it makes it even more special knowing this is the last Hansen TC match. I do think was a great match. The powerbomb on the outside was sick! Yes, and "cackling manically" after ramming Kobashi into the ringpost is just awesome. One of my favorite moments was Kobashi's kickout of the lariat right at three, and the look on Hansen's face right after he does it.- 19 replies

Wrestlers or Acts You Hated But Turned The Corner On
JKWebb replied to JaymeFuture's topic in Pro Wrestling
I don't know if hated is the right term, but I pretty much despised Jerry Lawler as a teenager. I knew he was a legend of the past (in my mind at the time), but I just saw him as the "puppies!" guy. I actually had no interest in checking out his past as a wrestler based on what I saw on the WWF screen. I'm from TN, but I grew up in the 90's past the prime of the Memphis boom. When I finally started checking out the Lawler of the late 70's and 80's in Memphis, turned the corner is probably an understatement. He is now one of my favorite wrestlers of all time, and he is definitely in the conversation of my absolute favorite promo. I thought the way he was portrayed on Smackdown this past week was phenomenal, and I love it when we get that version of King in the WWE. It's been talked about on here many times, but if you look at the Eddie Gilbert feud, the Snowman feud, and the Kaufman stuff, and the Dundee feud, and Terry Funk... and well I could keep going and going... but, he is one of the greatest of all time, and I missed out for a few years before I came to my senses. I also want to add that I think he has the best comebacks, or one-liners, whatever you want to call it, in history. -
The 80's. For reasons already mentioned. 1989 is probably my favorite year. I'm thinking of 80's Memphis, JCP, All Japan, Portland (early 80's especially), Mid-South, WWF, AWA, etc.... it goes on and on. No contest for me.
