[1997-09-01-BattlARTS] Yuki Ishikawa vs Daisuke Ikeda
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in September 1997
http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-250-201/2/ #211 I agree. You could feel the hatred. These guys worked their asses off, and their emotions were well displayed. Being less familiar with the promotion, I coundnt help but feel bad for them (in some ways) - working that hard in such a small venue with noticeably empty seats... anyways... ****. I think as I learn more about this promotion and the wrestlers/stories/characters ... it could bump this. -
http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-250-201/2/ #212 This hit the great level for me. This is just two big dudes just tearing into each other. I thought they both did a great job of displaying their emotion, projecting charisma, and just basically putting this over as a fight or a battle of two giants. ****

[1996-11-24-WCW-World War III] Rey Misterio Jr vs Ultimo Dragon
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-250-201/2/ #217 Kick him in the belly welly, but don't get too tipsy-topsy babehhh. I mean, this is just wild. I don't mind a match being this one-sided, but the moves Dragon hits are such high impact moves. They look devastating. When Rey starts his comeback, he should be half-dead, but it's like nothing happened. Dusty cracked me up in this. Especially when Ono starts fanning Dragon and he says something like "yeah, that's definitely gonna help." I don't know, there's no story here - the moves are cool and fun, but there's nothing to connect to other than the "fireworks" as Sleeze said. Not only did I want some hope spots from Rey, but Ultimo could have dialed it down a little too without all the huge moves back to back to back to back. ***1/4. A match for its time is a good way to put it... I give props for how cool the "fireworks" did look.- 18 replies

[1996-12-13-WAR-Ryogoku Crush Night] Genichiro Tenryu vs Nobuhiko Takada
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in December 1996
#222 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-250-201/2/ I love how Tenryu sells Takada's kicks in the beginning. I thought, thanks to Tenryu's animated selling, that the submission on his leg was pretty entertaining. I liked how Takada put over the damage to his head after taking some stomps from Kawada. It slowed him down, but he was able to gain advantage again. Lot's of great kicks following that. I see Tenryu as like the Terminator, and Takada's kicks are like bullets. They're slowing down the machine, but he keeps coming back. And, if he gets a hit in on you, it counts for twice as much damage. The chop and kick exchange towards the end of this is out of this world. I don't know... I thought this was pretty damn awesome... high end of ****1/4 for me.- 12 replies

[1996-04-20-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Steve Williams vs Akira Taue
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in April 1996
#224 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-250-201/2/ As soon as this starts off, I'm realizing I'm loving the chemistry here. Two big dudes just clobbering each other. They work this thing pretty stiff. Their chops and strikes are hard, and the battle of strength told well. Taue does a great job bumping and selling the impact of Doc's power moves. And, I thought Doc brought a really nice variety to his attack. Good moment with Doc trying to fight off the chokeslam to the outside. This is one hell of a big man match. I dig it. ****1/4- 7 replies

#226 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-250-201/ Jericho does a good job getting some heat before this starts up. I liked when Eddy showed Jericho his chest after taking some chops from Benoit... "look at this!" Pretty brutal chop exchange between Benoit and Jericho too. Eddy is all kinds of awesome with his heel antics while working over Benoit. I agree, it really is a missed opportunity not having them as a dominant heel tag team in WCW. By the time Malenko gets the hot tag, the crowd is super fired up. You get a nicely timed save from Benoit after Eddy hits the Frog Splash. The finish is awesome, and totally aids in calling this a great match.

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-250-201/ #227 One of Ace's finer moments (that I've seen anyway). I loved the far away look in Kobashi's eyes after he took that sick powerbomb from Williams in the first half of the match. There were parts I felt this drug a little bit, but I really enjoyed it. Williams did have some greatly timed saves. ****

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-250-201/ #235 Unfortunately, the only video I found of this had low a quality picture, but I was still pretty impressed with the match. Maybe the first Battlearts I've seen? Really good. ***3/4 for now, but I'd like to see it with higher quality. Really stiff and was pretty intense at times.

[2000-02-27-AJPW-Excite Series] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Jun Akiyama
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in February 2000
I've seen this before, but I was pumped to revisit it tonight with all the recent buzz around here. I think it's after the Tiger Driver Misawa hits towards the end, the visual of him standing over Akiyama ... almost daring him to get up for more ... it's just so damn awesome. The match itself is just incredible (as all have said), and it's definitely *****. It's really hard for me to say it's better than Atlantis vs. Villano III coming up in March, so I won't say it is. But, still, damn... it's amazing. Adding to the MOTD talk... for now I think I'd have the Atlantis match I already mentioned higher and Misawa/Kobashi 3/1/2003 is my MOTD. It's hard to say just thinking off the top of your head and trying to remember all the great matches. But, just looking at my MOTY's in he 2000s, Umaga/Cena is in this debate too.- 34 replies

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-250-201/2/ #225 Because others were comparing, I'll say that I do think this is a step behind the Razor/HBK series. But, it's still great. Sure, there's the slow climbing of the ladder and some over selling. However, the great outweighs the minor flaws. I'm on the high end of ****1/4. It's a cool moment and a PPV I'll never forget how much my friends and I loved watching live. I thought H did a really good job of selling his leg, and the crowd was super hyped for this the further along it went. I usually don't like the chair smacking the ladder on top of guy spot, but for some reason I thought it looked good/worked well here.

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-250-201/ #243 I think this is my favorite of the Hart/Perfect matches that are out there. Everyone knows they had great chemistry, and that's well on display here. I love how stiff Hennig works this match. I love his long term selling of the knee. I love he attacks the fingers. I think Bret is great, but there's lots of little things Hennig does in this match that puts the greatness of it on his shoulders IMO. ****1/4 to ****1/2.

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-250-201/ #247 Non-stop brutality. An awesome brawl, and I liked the comparison to Memphis above. I need to watch the Stampede match closer together to see which one I prefer. This was a pretty great pace. And, I like how out of control it seemed without spots seeming like they were prepared in adavance or set up ahead of time. ****

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-250-201/ #248 This is incredible. It's exactly what you'd want seeing this on paper beforehand. Hansen is great throughout. The way he is smirking while Vader is beating Burning down, his pointing and yelling while he's legal, and damn - the way he takes that Kobashi lariat at the end! Vader is a monster as usual, and his strikes are as stiff as shit. The Kobashi/Vader exchanges are so good. I think this is probably my second favorite match on this countdown so far. I'm right there with the ****1/2. A really fun match that I will definitely revisit.

[1992-09-15-SWS] Ric Flair vs Genichiro Tenryu (2/3 falls)
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in September 1992
http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-250-201/ #249 Yeah, this was awesome. I loved Tenryu firing out of the corner and the chop battle. Flair works so well in the 2/3 falls setting. His vicious attack on the leg and Tenryu's selling of that are what dreams are made of. Loved this match!- 14 replies

[1996-03-31-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Toshiaki Kawada vs Akira Taue

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/2/ #252 This is really good, but I'm surprised it hit this list where did after reading the comments as well. I think ***1/2 to ***3/4 sounds about right. Lost me a little in the middle too, but there were times where the bumping and selling of Kawada stood out.- 9 replies

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/2/ #254 I could only find the two final falls (11 minutes) online, but this was a cool visual. Seems like I'd agree this isn't great or anything (based on what I saw), however it was fun and cool to see this group of guys working together. Seemed pretty solid.
