  1. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/2/ #64 Great high-flying match. They go through the aerial arsenal only for them to find it takes a DDT and a sweet submission to take home the W. I always enjoy watching these two. This is another one of those would have made this type of list for me, but likely not this high.
  2. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/2/ #65 This match was full of great spots. I loved the German Suplex towards the end and Liger's work on the arm. The only two things I didn't like, were the slip at the end, and more so how quickly Liger bounced up from the tombstone. Super entertaining match still - it's great, but it wouldn't be a MOTC for me... I'd go ****1/4ish personally. Lots of fun stuff here though. Just read some of the other comments... thinking on it... I too like the botched finish now with Liger showing his over confidence ... that's a good point.
  3. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/2/ #66 That Garza spot was insane. It looked incredible though. He almost pulls it off where it looks like a graceful missile dropkick. This brawl is awesome. The brutality and energy are off the charts.
  4. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/2/ #68 This was great. I thought there were times Kobashi chopping down Taue looked super brutal. Taue was awesome too. Loved how this started... some good counters in the opening too. — I came back and watched this on 04/07/2020... I liked it even more. That Kobashi sleeper is wicked! I wish that the sleeper would be utilized in this fashion in current wrestling. My favorite sequence is the beatdown outside the ropes on the ring apron... they are going back and forth but they look so exhausted and it feels so desperate.... I love this match. I think to this point, it would be my second favorite All Japan match of 1995 (up through July at least)…
  5. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/2/ #70 Put me in the really good to almost great camp. The match itself has been broken down enough here, but ill say I was really entertained. However, it didn't seem like a MOTYC or an all-timer to me. I'm only comparing it to that because it's ranked so high here, so I don't want to sound like I didn't like it. Lot's to like here, and for me personally, I think that's largely due to Eddie. I agree some if it felt a bit rushed.
  6. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/2/ #75 This match is incredible. It's my second favorite War Games only behind 92. I'd have this one at ****3/4. I love how Pillman utilized the cage in the opening moments throwing that kick at Windham. He's great in this. Windham and Pillman really kick this off with a bang. Then you have Flair coming in and they chop the shit out of each other. It's all so good. I'm with Chad in that this is some of the best Sting and Flair in-ring stuff we ever get. Man, I love this. The finish does not bother me either.
  7. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/ #79 I agree with and had very similar thoughts as PeteF3. I've seen this one a few times recently, so I didn't revisit it today. I just loved the chemistry of these two in this match, and as Pete said, how Williams just seemed to make it different or standout from some of the other great Kawada matches. Great match ****3/4
  8. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/ #81 Well, I've hit the first match I consider to be ***** on the countdown. This is at the very top of my personal favorite moments in wrestling history. The match, the moment, the story, the performances that put all that together - all perfect. The ending of this is so emotional, and I'm not sure there's been a better storytelling moment in wrestling. Macho Man was my first favorite wrestler (and he still is my favorite). I believe, after this match, was when I fell out of wrestling as a kid. The Macho/Liz stuff was what I was most attached to as a youngster. The only Mania I can remember seeing live as a little kid was Mania 5. I think after seeing this on rental VHS, and thinking Macho was really done, that was it for a while. Anyway, I still get chills watching this. I'm not sure what else can be said. I love this match. If I were making my own top 90s list, then I'd have this higher.
  9. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/ #82 I haven't really gotten into the Onita stuff I've seen, but Terry Funk delivers a really charismatic performance in this. The punches look awesome and Terry is really giving his all. I love the ref armor and him running around in the background. I also really loved the guitar that kicks in right after the explosion as the smoke clears. It's a cool visual and fitting music. This was interesting.
  10. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/ #84 Everything was so perfectly timed and looked so good. I think the accomplishes exactly what they set out to do, and it remains as timeless as ever. It's crazy for me think I actually like the Summerslam match more now, but this was such a great moment. Shawn taking that slam or suplex off the ladder was so sick. The finish is awesome. Razor throws some of the best punches you'll see in the WWF. A true joy to watch - any time ****1/2. I really like that the ladder isn't over used IMO. They work the ladder around the match instead of the match around the ladder to a certain degree.
  11. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/ #85 This blew me away. This is up there with one of my favorite Taue performances I've seen. Jumbo is always so damn good in these tags (well, in everything). Damn near perfect ****3/4. Very memorable finish.
  12. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/ #88 This was a lot of fun and great, but some slow spots in the middle keep it just shy of the classic area for me. Lots of great action. I thought Ogawa was really entertaining in this. ****1/4
  13. #47 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-50-1/ This was my favorite match of all-time since it happened up until a few years ago. It still is really high on my list. Some of that is nostalgia, but most of it is not. It's a perfect match IMO - *****. I think this is Shawn Michaels' greatest performance of his career. I also agree it's the best Hell in a Cell. I like Chad's comparison to a horror movie that he has mentioned in the past. I feel like Shawn always delivers in those roles where he is beaten half to death. Some of my other favorite performances of his are: 8/30/86 Rockers vs. Rose & Somers and also Survivor Series 2003. He's just the man in that role. This match was the first time I can really remember discussing (or thinking about) match quality as a fan. Sure, I thought about whether a match was good or not prior to this, but this is the first time I remember my friends and I really discussing someone's performance in a match with such great detail. I was really more into WCW at the time, and I'm not sure I had really seen anything similar to this before. This was before I started watching old WCW or looked into Japan. I was just blown away by this. I would say, a large part of me becoming a true fan of professional wrestling was largely in part due to this match.
  14. #57 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/2/ One of my favorite moments ever is when Sting comes down to the ring and gets in Luger's face. This wasn't the best match of 1990, but it is certainly my favorite. This isn't Ric Flair's greatest match, but outside of the Steamboat and Funk matches, it is probably my personal favorite. What a great moment and match. ****3/4
  15. #89 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/ I totally agree, I was loving Chicana in this match. He was fantastic in all aspects here. Konnan did look okay at times I suppose, but some of his punches and/or strikes looked like total crap. I say punches and/or strikes, because I couldn't even tell what they were supposed to be. He was just throwing his arm towards his opponent sort of open-handed and not touching anything. I'm not sure what he was going for. That was really the only thing I was totally down on in the match. I'm with garretta a little bit, in that it was hard for me to understand exactly what was going on at times. I'm sure a little more context would help, but I know garretta was going through the YB when he saw it, so maybe not. That being said, I loved how out of control it was, and Chicana was so damn great. The great outweighed the okay.
  16. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/ #94 I always walk away on a wrestling high after watching this match. I have this match and the RnR match both at ****1/2, but this would be on the higher end of that. It's so much fun. I love all the kicks being thrown around. This is a classic. I listed my top 5 favorite matches of 1990 in the matches of the month thread, and this match was one of two honorable mentions that almost made that list.
  17. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/ #98 I think I was just as (or even more) surprised to find this on the countdown as others were reaching it in the YB. This is what I need out of shoot style to truly suck me in. I need striking intertwined with the matwork, and I need some pro wrestling sprinkled throughout. I thought the finishing stretch of this was fantastic. There was some of the matwork that was good, but I stil found myself waiting for them to transition to something else. I fall into to the same boat as garretta here... almost becoming bored a few times. Overall, this is one of the more enjoyable matches for me that I've seen worked this way.
  18. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/ #99 I always like when a match starts with a brawl. Some highlights for me were the DDT from Hart onto Taker, Bret going chest first into the open turnbuckle and bumping and selling so beautifully off that, the focused limbwork and Taker's selling of that, and I liked the reversed tombstone that led to the rope tie up... just didn't like it as the finish... but, ****1/2 sounds about right. Great encounter.
  19. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-100-51/ #100 This has been covered and summed up and described very accurately above -- TOTAL CLASSIC for me. A near perfect match and it doesn't get any better than this in the WCW cruiserweight division, or in WCW period after this match. The best WCW match of their most popular era. AMAZING.
  20. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-150-101/2/ #101 Not that this wasn't good, but I was kinda surprised this ranked where it did. I think Hayabusa is the most interesting or polarizing wrestler on the countdown for me. I just can't connect with him. I see he does big moves, and I see he flys around, but I haven't found a way see or appreciate what else he may be offering. I think this was good and entertaining, but it wasn't a classic match for me.
  21. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-150-101/2/ #102 The first fall had incredible matwork and escalated to the exciting third fall that had big moves and dramatic sequences. I thought the powerbombs looked really impactful and the ending came across as something special. ****1/4 ish for me ... really the only negative I had after watching this a second time (in July, 2017) was the transition in the quick second fall... great match!
  22. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-150-101/2/ #103 This is one of the most fun matches of all-time, and I can't imagine how much fun it must have been to be there live. Vince's facial expressions are so good, and oh my god the Patterson table bump. So much to love.
  23. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-150-101/2/ #105 I would say, for me, this is the fourth best Rude match I've seen. I'd put War Games and the two classics with Steamboat higher, but I think (off the top of my head) this would be 4. The way this starts with the slaps and heated action is spectacular. Rude's selling and timing are stellar. What a year 1992 was for him. ****1/2
  24. #106 http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-150-101/2/ Well, It hasn't been too long since I've seen this, but I was excited to fire this one up today. It's good timing hitting this on the countdown with the HOF approaching. Cornette is super entertaining in this. The ref stuff at the beginning, all his expressions, Stan Lane with some CPR... great stuff. There has been so much talked about here already, so not much to sum up. But, two of the greatest tags and one of the greatest managers off all time put on a clinic. I love the Eaton/Morton punch exchage that leads to them tumbling over the top where Morton eats a slam from Lane. Morton, per usual, great FIP. The chemistry of these two teams is legendary, and this match is one of the best examples why.
  25. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-150-101/2/ #108 This is one of my favorite discoveries on this countdown so far. I had not seen this and absolutely loved it. The action is great. All the creative spots and counters are excellent. Love the Taue/Akiyama exchanges in the beginning and that killer chokeslam spot on the outside. There is huge boot to Akiyama (in the corner) from Kawada that Jun sells so phenomenally. This is a match I could watch anytime when I just want something action packed, creative, and fun. I'll say ****1/2 for me. I'll want to come back to it though.
