  1. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/2/ #162 This started off huge. Lots of big moves. Great bumping and selling and letting the moves sink in. I love the Kobashi submissions and the facial expressions and emotion displayed by Misawa as he was fighting out. Lots of brutal shots in this thing. Awesome stuff With Kobashi kicking the hell out of Misawa on the rails then bringing back out there for another stiff kick. I typically prefer that a DDT be sold as a finisher, or at least portrayed as one, but I loved the way Misawa sold it here in his neck. Then you get Kobashi coming from behind him and beating on his neck with super hard strikes. The visual was awesome. Perfect counter from Misawa then creatively Kobashi stopped it with a chop to the back of his neck. The struggle is epic... they're battling their way out of each other's moves... then that sick power bomb from Kobashi to Misawa in the corner was insane. What a war. Amazing. ****1/2
  2. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/2/ #165 This was great. Really loved the closing moments and excitement built through the exhaustion of Panther, near falls, and really just how well those final holds were sold. For example, the kicking of of the feet showing that Mariachi was holding on for dear life struggling for the pin. ****1/4

  4. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/2/ #168 I liked this match a lot. It's not my favorite style of wrestling, but I get it. I thought the excitement built during the submissions and Han's countering was super. Also, love the hard-hitting and almost knock out blow towards the end.
  5. This is a really fun encounter. I feel about the same about as you did. Loved the table spot, and the spots you mentioned involving the RnR double teams. The more I've watched Lanny over the last few years, the more I realize that he was a great puncher. Obvious point on Savage with the slow pull back slingshot style punch. But I've gotten to where I really like the quick fire like jab punches that Lanny throws too. They compliment each other well as a tag.
  6. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/2/ #169 Went through this not too long ago with the yearbook and loved it! Second favorite match of the month for me, and it's a great match. I watched it again tonight after reading through the comments. Funny, I had to rewind the three count at the end too. But, I think he had him down. Anyway, this is just an amazing moment coupled with a really great match. Yes, the body language is key and the crowd ate it up. So did I. Sure, there was some meandering, but it wasn't enough to take away from the moment for me. I loved the finishing stretch. I think I'd go around ****1/2.
  7. #171 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/2/ First of all, I'm shocked I have not heard of this before. Maybe I have, and it just slipped my mind. I'm just surprised you don't hear Bret Hart talk about it more, because usually he doesn't shy away from talking about his better performances. And, this is just that. This is the Bret Hart show. His selling in this match was amazing. He fires up when he needs too, but his selling really drives the hour. I thought he was great. The arm work in the beginning did not bother me, because I thought Flair was really entertaining in those spots. I do think he relied on the ropes for heat too much by the time it was all said and done, but I can't really say it made the match less enjoyable for me. I loved Flair's ruthless attack on Hart's leg. He was great in his role as the heel here, so I hate to fully say it was the Bret Hart show, because that's not fair. I just thought Hart's performance is what drove this to greatness. Great drama down the stretch. This is a great match. I'm there with the ****1/4 to ****1/2 range. I really loved this one.
  8. #172 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/2/ I thought the match was alright until about 4 minutes to go, then it really kicked in. Through my eyes, I would credit that largely to Liger's performance. He kicks it into the next gear with some great spots. More of a really good match than great for me. Great finishing stretch and epic finish. ***3/4
  9. #175 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/2/ This match was really cool and tons of fun. Psicosis, Rey, and Dragon all looked amazing. I can't imagine how fun this probably was to see live. ***1/2 ***I came back to this in June of 2020, and I'm probably a little higher on it now than I was then. I just love seeing how fired up Rey Mysterio is. The crowd is nuts for this. Super fun match, and one of my favorite matches of 1996 up to this point in the year.
  10. #177 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/ Yeah, loved the opening with Ace and Akiyama. Seemed like Williams kicked out of a frog splash and Tiger Driver pretty early, but I guess there are five minutes clipped that might change that feeling. Akiyama is the work horse here, and as always, looks great. Ace did look good here too. I really enjoyed his offensive spots in the closing stretch. Akiyama crawling to get the pin attempt on Ace was pretty awesome. ****
  11. Loved the way this started off. Both guys were fired up to get this going. Santo sold the hell out of that second rope DDT in the second fall. Which was great, because it could have ended the match for him. But, he was smart enough to get out of the ring. I didn't really like how the second fall ended. I wasn't sure why Felino could punch Santo, but then let him climb the turnbuckle, hug him, then do a belly-to-belly suplex (without trying to fight him off). I also didn't really like the feet stuck to the bottom of a rope spot that started the third fall. Santo looked really great on offense. I liked his use of the ropes for dramatic near falls. Overall, I thought this was pretty good. The post-match angle was really entertaining. I think *** is probably about right. #178 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/
  12. #182 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/ This was pretty fantastic. Loved all the back and forth action, and it really felt like an epic battle. Kobashi's bumping and selling in this match = incredible.
  13. #183 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/ The last time I watched this show in it's entirety, I remember really loving it. That was probably a few years ago. A scene like this is what wrestling is all about. I love that this starts with Austin and Bret, and they are firing punches at each other. Bret got the upper had at first, and the crowd was going NUTS for it. There is lot's of great tag experience in this match. You have the Hart Foundation, The Road Warriors, The Hollywood Blondes, Dustin Rhodes (previously a tag specialist in WCW, and one of the very best at that), Davey Boy (British Bulldogs), and Ken Shamrock is really the only person in there without lots of tag experience. The great parts of this match are the crowd, the Steve Austin story, and all the uncontrollable moments and breakout brawls. They put on one hell of a show here, and gave the crowd (and anyone watching at home) exactly what they wanted and more. This is just incredible. It is timeless.
  14. #188 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/ A very good match with a nice performance from Kikuchi. Ogawa's tights were mentioned above, and they sort of reminded me of some of the earlier HBK tights before he had the hearts on them. I thought the offense of Misawa and Kobashi looked really great after the hot tag, and liked how it wrapped around back to Kikuchi for the pin. Really nice finishing sequence. ****
  15. Yes, this was a ton of fun. AJ Styles is insane, and the best in the world. Everyone was great here, but his performance was simply incredible. The guy deserves to main even WrestleMania this year. The way Cena beat AJ last time, was the AA, roll through, and then another AA. Loved that AJ had a counter for that this time. Also, really liked how they started the match with Harper taking Bray out for a minute. The only downside is all the AA's being thrown around. I understand they are using that to show that AJ and Bray are on the same level as Cena, but I think they could tell that story another way. Wyatt kicks out of the AA, but Cena loses to one Sister Abigail. Since they are using multiple finishers, that helps get Bray over pretty big.
  16. I really enjoyed the opening matwork, especially Shibata's defense. I thought Ospreay worked in his explosive high flying in creative and logical ways for the most part. The first dive through the ropes was amazing, and looked brutal. I could have done without the second one with the hand springs or whatever flipping over the top. We get the trading of stiff strikes. The blend of the styles is cool. It was nice to see Shibata sitting back and waiting for the right opportunities to catch Ospreay in the midst of something high flying and punish him for it. Ultimately, that's what cost him the match, and Shibata grabs the win. I thought this was really entertaining. ***3/4 to ****. I'm leaning towards the 4.
  17. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/ #193 I agree. This was pretty great. ****1/4. Really great story with the leg work and emotions were running high. Great stuff.
  18. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/ #191 Always love the Sting GAB gear. Probably my personal favorite in-ring feud of all-time. I can watch these two guys go anytime. So much has already been described and stated here, and I agree with most of it. I'll add that I think this match is incredible. What a moment. What a match. They deliver hard-hitting action. They let the moments breathe. Sting is full of fire. Vader is a beast. The crowd is alive and soaking in every moment. ****3/4
  19. http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?/topic/20111-bret-hart-vs-steve-austin/ #195 Austin did a great job selling the knee as Hart worked it over. The first missed chair shot on his leg (on the oustside) looked bad. I liked that Austin went back to the knee after the missed elbow, and when the leg gave out on the piledriver. Doesn't reach the level of their other classics, but it's good with some really good spots. I felt more emotion from both guys post-DQ than I really felt during the match itself.
  20. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/ #197 Enjoyed the hell out of this hard-hitting confrontation. I'm with Loss, as this is my favorite era of Booker T as well. ****
  21. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/ #198 I thought this was good, but the dive at the end was the highlight.
  22. I keep mine updated too. This is the only place I even track it, and I use this as a reference for stuff I want to check out all the time.
  23. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/ #199 I dig Volk Han. He's intriguing and I've always wanted to check out more of his work. To keep it short and sweet, I'll just say I enjoyed the beginning and end of this, but I was drifting off at times. I can tell there are going to be some Han matches out there that I will absolutely love. This wasn't one of them.
  24. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-200-151/ #200 This is an awesome moment, and one of the best in ECW history. I'll agree to that. Lawler was so damn good here. Unlike some of ECW, that doesn't really stand the test of time, I think this most certainly does.
  25. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-250-201/2/ #204 Kobashi's submissions looked great. Akiyama has a nice attack targeting Kobashi's knee. Kobashi sold it well throughout and liked them going back to it during that incredible closing stretch up to the draw. ****1/4
