  1. I'm not sure if I understand your point. Comparing guys working in different environements is what people do all the time. If you voted in the SC Greatest Wrestler poll, which I believe you did, you had to engage in ranking different wrestlers working different styles and working different promotions. So if you indeed sent in a ballot, you're contradicting yourself here.
  2. Well, when you're doing things like the "Greatest WWF/E Matches Ever" countdowns on smarkschoice, you're sort of forced to judge a Tito Santana performance in '84 with a Bret Hart performance in '93 with a Rey Mysterio performancce in '06. And when people call a wrestler (any wrestler, not just Mysterio) as the greatest in company history, there is a need to compare him to other wrestlers in that company, even if it means going back 30 some years. I agree with you about Mysterio being better now than in any other period before.
  3. Getting back to Rey v Eddie, I never understood the praise for Mysterio. Good sympathetic babyface worker but, as mentioned, mastering modern WWE style with overdone counters and "physicality" is nothing to get excited about. I'm confused why people list him as a top 10 all-time worker. I think Backlund, Tito, Savage, and Bret were all better at working as faces for the company. I like Rey's feud with Eddie but I don't think it's as good as Tito v. Greg or Bret v. Owen. I'm probably in the minority, however.
  4. You are going to hate my list, because I have that tag even lower than Floyd does. I like it a great deal, but to me it suffers a bit as a match that doesn't do anything to "stand out" of the pack. I probably should have had it higher than I did but I knew others would have it a lot higher than me, and again it wasn't a match that distinguished itself the way some of the other top stuff did. I liked the match but it sputters a little in the 2nd half. Dustin's FIP section was weaker than Windham's, in part because I didn't like Dustin's selling as much, but also because Austin in control wasn't particularly interesting. The finish, while nice from a storyline standpoint, looked kind of weak I thought. It's still a great match but I'd have it as the 4th best on that show.
  5. That match against Rheingans on your Martel comp was pretty awesome. I remember thinking both guys looked super smooth on the mat. Too bad the crowd tuned out.
  6. Is this the match? There is an awesome "playing possum" spot early on that I don't think I've ever seen out of Bret before. It's the right match, but it's clipped there. The full version is about 3-4 min longer. I've always liked that match and was always surprised it doesn't get talked about more.

  11. "Tell Me A Lie" was included on From the Vault, fwiw. I agree that this DVD set looks great though. As far as matchlists go, it's probably the best one they've done in a long time. Seems like they put more than 10 seconds of thought into picking the matches.

  15. I don't see the possibility of going back, but if there was, it would take much longer than 2-3 years and the people in charge don't have the necessary restraint to hold out for 2-3 weeks, much less 2-3 years. The only conceivable way I could see them doing this is some cross promotion with MMA groups, where pro-wrestlers are established as legit fighters instead of entertainers.
  16. Anyone have a link to Meltzer's New Japan ratings list? I believed they're archived at tOA but can't find the URL.
  17. Calculated murders don't preclude insanity. Whether or not the murder was calculated has little to do with whether or not a person can be classified as insane; his thougths, mood, motive and reasons for killing are probably more important in determining his mental state than the way he committed the actual murders.
  18. Personally, this is by far the hardest death to take yet. I can't even begin to imagine how such a tragedy could fall on an entire family. And Biff Wellington was found dead over the weeked.
  19. I don't necessarily agree that Kid was booked to look stronger. He was basically a guy who had to pull off insanely dangerous moves to even have a shot at an upset. Plus Bret had already pinned him midway through the match off a crucifix reverse. With Backlund, you got the sense he was beating Bret at his own game, outwrestling him, and looking like his equal. Throughout his WWF comeback, I'd be hard pressed to find any good Backlund matches not involving Hart. And they had 3 really good and pretty different matches (MSG HH, Superstars, Survivor Series). Who was the last guy up to that point to give Bob a good match? Takada? So, yeah, I'm inclined to give Bret credit where it's due.
  20. Re: the Bret/Backlund, I think Bret held up his end of the match. He did a good job of putting Backlund over as a credible opponent. At the same time, Bob is booked to look much stronger in that match, hence it's easier for him to look like a show stealer. On a related note, if we're rolling out Bret TV matches, I think people should check out Bret/Fatu from 3/1/93 Raw. I don't know how people would rate it, but it was a fun little match.
  21. Not so much a review, but more or less a question. I've read a couple of off-hand comments as to the high quality of the 8/93 Hart-Yokozuna Cage match. Now, I've never seen the match myself so it'd be nice if someone could write a review or point me to one. For those that have seen it, how does that match compare with the 12/15/93 Hart-Yokozuna Cage match that made tape (released on Coliseum Video's Inside the WWF)? Checking History of the WWE, Bret-Yoko had a short series of Cage matches in August and September of '93. They didn't work another one until their 12/15 meeting. One would think the match structure wouldn't be all that different between the two, especially given that they were all dark matches, although the work could have been just that much better when they met in San Francisco. I remember watching the taped version a couple of years ago and didn't think much of it then, but I may need to rewatch it. As a side note, a couple of weeks ago, I did see a Hart-Yokozuna match from Survivor Showdown Showdown in '93. It was a decent bout which got my interest in finding out more about their Cage match.
