I saw this after reading the hype and while I like it, I don't know that it's substantially better than any of the other great WCW/DA six man matches. Top 10 seems high. I think this would make the bottom of a top 100 but that's about it.

[1992-05-16-WWF-Superstars] Ultimate Warrior and Papa Shango
Frankensteiner replied to Loss's topic in May 1992
It sounds like this is JIP so what I think you didn't see is Shango coming ringside earlier in the match and getting one of Warrior's arm bands which he took off/or had taken off him by the Nasty Boys (I forget how it went down). Shango then retreated to the back with the arm band and I want to say also did some "trancing" back stage. I agree that this was awesome. They never really did a propper blow-off aside from a 5 minute match for Coliseum.- 12 replies

Rick Martel vs. Mr. Saito, Winnipeg, MB 4/24/85 I felt this was kind of a cookie-cutter match but still very good nonetheless. I would say actually one of Martel's three or four best title defenses. These guys both have pretty deep movesets and were able to cram plenty of stuff into 15 minutes, perhaps to the match's detriment. Match felt much shorter as a result. Saito controlled early with a side headlock but everytime the pace picked up Martel was able to gain control, including hitting some really sweet looking arm drags. Martel's sell of the Scorpion complete with pulling on the ring mat as he inched towards the ropes was great as well. Finally, it was nice to see Martel go over clean for one of the few times during his reign.

Yes, I love the Rheingans match even if the clipping is somewhat distracting. I plan to re-watch it at some point. It would be great if you could specify which Bock/Martel and Garvin/Martel matches you're referencing because there's plenty of them that are available on tape. I do want to watch the two match Martel/Bock series from Winnipeg from the previous year with the crap finishes. I started with the above match because I remember thinking it was their best one together.

All of Dylan's recent talk about Martel has motivated me to go back and re-watch some of the matches from Martel's AWA World title reign. Rick Martel vs. Nick Bockwinkel, Winnipeg, MB 3/28/85 The first of what I watched is this match against Bockwinkel. Martel worked more matches against Bock during this period than he did against any other opponent so these guys should certainly be familiar with each other. The match starts off with Bockwinkel breaking clean early only to eventually pummel Martel when both go into the ropes off an abdominal stretch. Bock then controls the ring by preventing Martel to enter. I guess it doesn't make much sense for a challenger to do this but Ken Resnick covered for it well enough, I thought. They then worked a long section of holds culminating in Bock's figure four on Martel. Martel's escape and fired up side mounted punches on Bock were great. The problem with this match was they didn't really work enough of a stretch run after all the holds and the ending felt abrupt as a result. I was ready for at least another 5 minutes. The ending was shit too with the dueling in-the-ropes spots. I enjoy seeing these guys wrestle each other but I don't know that they ever had a truly great match together. Rick Martel vs. Michael Hayes, St. Paul, MN 7/14/85 This match was JIP to the middle but what was shown wasn't good. Crusher was ringside as an outside ref/special enforcer type. I generally like Michael Hayes but this was way too chinlocky before going into a clusterfuck of a finish with the Birds and Crusher brawling ringside. This was a re-match from Hayes "winning" the title via outside interference the previous month. There was also a previous match between Martel/Roberts where Hayes bloodied Martel with his boot (although this could have been exclusive to Chicago). Anyway, what I'm trying to say is they would have been better off working a shorter, more intense revenge match than what they did here.

Ok, I see what you guys were saying. I have not seen that much El Samurai and always thought the consensus on him was capable wrestler but nothing more. If you think more highly of him then this may indeed be an apt comparison. As far as the other luchadors soup listed, I don't know if I could make a case for Atlantis being better than any of them, but I don't know if any of them are better than Atlantis either. I think Dandy has the strongest case. Also, how much Santo/Casas UWA footage is available? It can't be too much so you're arguing based on a much smaller sample.

[1992-04-05-WWF-Wrestlemania VIII] Bret Hart vs Roddy Piper
Frankensteiner replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
I agree that this is well laid out match. I think Bret's selling made this match for me. The post-match with Bret bloody, barely able to stand and Piper strapping the belt around Bret's waist was a great image. I was trying to think of other major face v. face matches in this era and couldn't think of anything other than Warrior/Hogan. I know there's probably been some house show matches between mid-carders or tag teams (Tito/Koko, Harts/Rockers) but I can't think of anything major. I'm probably missing something.- 38 replies

I think you guys are SEVERLY underrating Atlantis. From '89 to '93 I would put him up with anyone in Mexico, that's how much I like him. He is at worst a top 5 guy. I don't think Samurai compares to him. I am curious to hear what OJ thinks.

I thought Sting/Rude only had the one KOC draw at the Clash in 92. As I recall, it was kind of boring. I'd like to know if they had more matches that year. From what I've seen, the Sting/Rude matches are some of the most disappointing because you would think these guys would work great together.
-
Those Flair/Luger matches aren't anything special. The Starrcade match they had felt so tired and predictable. It was totally Flair on autopilot with the constant begging off and the usual Flair spots. I liked Flair/Sting from the Clash much better. Also, there's a good Flair/Sting from WCWSN in 93.

[1992-02-29-WCW-Superbrawl II] Rick Rude vs Ricky Steamboat
Frankensteiner replied to Loss's topic in February 1992
This was such a great match. I think the Rude/Steamboat series might even be better than Sting/Vader, at least for the matches in '92. I wish they had let Steamboat work in this spot for his entire time in WCW instead of making him more of a utility guy and putting him in teams with Koloff and Douglas.- 24 replies

I'm probably in a minority in thinking this match is a little overrated in some circles. It's really awesome when Barry is in, particularly opposite Larry Z. But Dustin's FIP section with Austin in control dragged this down. I don't want to sound like I'm too down on it because I still like it quite a bit. This was sweet revenge for Windham. One other thing that struck me was the lack of heat during this match (it's kind of true for the other main matches on this show).

[1992-01-31-WWF-MSG, NY] Bret Hart vs The Undertaker
Frankensteiner replied to Loss's topic in January 1992
I really dug this match when I saw it a few years ago. I don't think there's many matches where zombie-era Undertaker worked against guys with technical wrestler gimmicks. It was mostly power wrestlers and other monsters. It makes this an interesting match up.- 13 replies

So how about: Duggan ('82-'86) v. Kerry ('82-'86)? and Mid-South v World Class?
-
Sting/Keirn is alright but nothing to go out of your way to see. Sting's finish was pretty cool, though. Which Sting/Avalanche match are you talking about, Vic? The one from Starrcade '94? I've seen the viewer's choice match from the Main Event on youtube, but Bischoff & Heenan ruined it with their commentary and Sullivan/Brutus did a run-in. IIRC, there was also a Clash match between the two where Angel/Bubba turned on Sting at the end.
-
Sting/Luger is tough. There are some matches where Sting just looks amazing and I don't think Luger reached those levels. It seems to me like Sting may have more great matches and Luger more good ones? Are there any Sting matches worth checking out from late '94-95. Like the feuds with Avalanche, Bubba, Meng, etc.?

Randy Savage vs. Ted Dibiase, SNME 3/12/88 I recall liking some of the matches in this feud (a couple from MSG and Milwaukee) so I was excited about the match-up but this was disappointing. The match really had no purpose other than to set up the Hogan-Savage/Dibiase-Andre situation for WrestleMania. The wrestling was non-descript for the most part. The transitions were middling and this never got out of 2nd gear. Randy Savage vs. One Man Gang, SNME 4/30/88 On the other hand, this was a fun all-action match billed as Savage’s first televised WWF Title defense. Really well laid out. I like the way Gang moves around, the way he sells damage and just carries his weight around. Savage was impressive, looking like he was going 100 mph on offense.

Randy Savage vs. Bret Hart, Saturday Night's Main Event, 11/28/87 I just got done watching & cataloging all of my Pro/WWW discs from 86-88 so maybe I'm overrating this match because it's such a contrast to Crockett matches of the time but wow, is this match terrific. It's a really well focused match and I felt there was no wasted time at all. Both guys bump around huge in the first part while the focus becomes Savage's leg after the commercial break. I guess you can also say this match is a testament to WWF production at the time because everything on these SNME shows was so well laid out, produced, and booked that most of the matches were at worst at least somewhat entertaining. But this is still a great match and every bit as good as anything I've seen on NWA TV that year save for Flair-Windham.

Yeah, I listed this match in the 1993 nominations thread and agree with everything here. I don't know if it's better than their Cage matches, but it's certainly their best pro-shot match. Yoko has some really fun bumps throughout.

Comments that don't warrant a thread 2010-2011
Frankensteiner replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
Regarding Sarge, I'd really like to re-watch his AWA stuff from '85-'86-ish. I think that was another big missed opportunity in wrestling. He was coming off a really hot '84 and had the GI Joe deal. They should have pushed him harder instead of typecasting him in a feud against kind of a crappy foreign heel like Zhukov. Not implying he would have reached Hogan's level of popularity but the AWA could have been more competetive than they were. -
Tony Schiavone and early 90s WCW announcing
Frankensteiner replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Megathread archive
I would agree with Ross being the best. I don't really get worked up about the college football references. I like Ross better than Russel because he's better at conveying excitement in the action. Now sometimes he goes overboard and becomes a self-parody, but at his best I think Ross is the better than anyone. My favorite Ross commentary is at KOTR during Bret/Perfect. That Ross-Heenan-Savage team was awesome. -
[1993-11-27-WWF-Superstars] Update: Owen Hart interview
Frankensteiner replied to Loss's topic in November 1993
I think it's from the Survivor Series Showdown match between Bret/Yokozuna. Owen came down to ringside and, although he was ultimately trying to help against Fuji's interference, caused Bret to get disqualified. The Bret/Owen post-match argument never aired, however. Maybe they thought it would make Bret look like kind of an asshole to argue with his baby brother who was just trying to help. -
And probably the only one I can think off in the last 30 years. JBL stiffed the fuck out of his opponents with his lariat. Windham was using a lariat to win matches during his '87-'88 run in JCP. I forget if he used that at all as a finisher in 90s WCW.

[1993-08-30-WWF-Summerslam] Shawn Michaels vs Mr Perfect
Frankensteiner replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
I did not think Perfect was a lame face. In fact, he was more of a "cool" tweener-type face who would bend the rules and this period was really my favorite of his entire WWF run. I really liked his matches with Flair, Luger, Samu, Doink, Bret, and Yoko during this time. Yes, he did not have a lot of offense but he did his stuff with a lot of conviction. His chops were great. He also had some awesome squash matches around this time just murdering jobbers. As far as this match, it feels incomplete. It feels like they're setting up another 10 minutes and all of a sudden it gets cut off. This was a bad way to end the feud. Perfect/Michaels had some good brawls at WM backstage and then in front of the Manhattan Center where Perfect slammed Michaels on the hood of a car. For whatever reason they felt it was more important to set up Perfect/Diesel than to properly blow this feud off. Which was stupid.- 12 replies
