Don't change that channel all that flippin' around! You're about to see the hottest show in town. The biggest stars and the biggest brawls, the biggest hits and the biggest falls. Non stop action no messin' around, pretty soon we're comin' to your town. The way you like it, the way it used to be...Smoky Mountain Wrestling's on TV! You are watching professional wrestling on Knoxville's WEEE-LP, UPN Channel 32! Smoky Mountain Wrestling TV Episode #1 From the WEEE TV Studios in Knoxville, TN Air Date: Friday, August 30th, 1997 Announcer: Bob Caudle Referee: Aubrey Wayne and Mark Curtis The program opens to music over previous wrestling action before coming to the familiar face of announcer Bob Caudle in the confines of a television studio, in front of the SMW logo and a live studio audience. He welcomes everyone to the return of wrestling ... the way you like it and the way it used to be as Smoky Mountain Wrestling returns to the airwaves ... and it didn't take long before trouble comes along! Bob Caudle says this visit was not on the schedule ... Jim Cornette: Now hold on one second, Bob. I am here to say some nice things about Bert Prentice who was running the show here last year before it all went away. I mean this sincerely when I say that Bert Prentice is a Con Man and a Snake Oil Salesman! He is the epitome of a Used Car Salesman ... and believe me, Bob, I mean that with all sincerity. Caudle rolls his eyes and shakes his head. Jim Cornette: Those were the nice things I can say here on TV about Bert. I know, I know, Bob what you are thinking ... I'm just here to say something nasty about Bert Prentice and to probably pick on you at some point but that just isn't the case. After Bert ran this territory into the ground, stuffed his pockets with whatever cash he could take from these fans then closed the doors, I had a change of heart. You see, Bob, this area holds a special place in my heart. This is where wrestling was done the way it was supposed to be AND it was done in front of the best and most knowledgeable fans who know and appreciate a good wristlock over a wrist watch. They appreciate good wrestling over cartoon character buffoons and a chair shot that begins a feud ... Caudle thinks it does sound different than the usual Jim Cornette bashing people over the head with his tennis racket. He likes this Jim better. Jim Cornette: Getting to the point, I bought SMW lock, stock and barrel from Bert Prentice. I was able to secure a television deal as well as some of those who wrestled here before. I also think Smoky Mountain will be the place to see some of tomorrow's superstars today as they kick off their careers. I just ask everyone to be patient with us as we grow, starting today with our Power Half Hour! The fans cheer as Bob Caudle sends us off to our first commercial break! x-x-x-x-x COMMERCIAL BREAK x-x-x-x-x Local commercials as well as programming for the evening. The break ends with an ad for a live studio audience for television tapings Wednesday evenings! Be a part of the live studio experience! x-x-x-x-x COMMERCIAL BREAK x-x-x-x-x Backstage, a returning Father Jim MItchell promises fire and brimstone shall rain down upon Smoky Mountain Wrestling! Caudle talks about MItchell who was here previously, glossing over the "transformation" he went through to get to where we are here today, having replaced the Moondogs with these Night Terrors. He then moves on to their opponents, a pair of youngsters by the name of Joey Matthews and Christian York who are brothers by another mother. A dynamite pair looking to establish themselves here in SMW! The Night Terrors w/Father Jim Mitchell versus Christian York & Joey Matthews. Referee Aubrey Wayne. Mitchell sends in his masked men before the bell for a sneak attack to set the stage for the early going in the match. Mitchell is also able to get involved, slapping York and tripping up Matthews with his cane for a near pinfall. With the fans support, York and Matthews make a come back with some nifty double teaming with a double drop kick that knocks down both masked men AND Father Jim! York does the honors as Matthews holds off the Terror who tries to make the save. With the loss, Mitchell tries to send the Terrors back in for the attack but Matthews and York are ready. Thinking better of it, Mitchell pulls the Terrors back, promising this is far from over! Caudle praises the win by York and Matthews with the fans cheering as he sends it to a commercial break. x-x-x-x-x COMMERCIAL BREAK x-x-x-x-x Local commercials as well as programming for the evening. The break ends with an ad for a live studio audience for television tapings Wednesday evenings! Be a part of the live studio experience! x-x-x-x-x COMMERCIAL BREAK x-x-x-x-x Bob Caudle is ready for our next match with the very familiar Killer Kyle taking on Silver Wings who is new to the territory. Silver Wings versus Killer Kyle. Referee Mark Curtis. Big burly guy with the violin case taking on the much smaller masked man in all white. Kyle, with the size comes on like gangbusters, looking to bully SIlver Wings in the early going but finds himself quickly frustrated as SW uses his speed get himself out of predicaments as well as use hit and run tactics to get in some offense. Killer Kyle looks to have gotten back in control, snatching Silver Wings out of midair, catching him doing a crossbody block. Adjusting the weight, Killer Kyle is able to throw him through the air but the wiry guy lands on his feet ready for more action. Silver Wings wears Kyle down but a ref bump saves the big man who is able to turn the tide following an eye rake. No pin attempts, just a beating to take out the frustrations from earlier in the match. The fans start chanting Silver WIngs to bring him back into the match. A head scissors take down puts Kyle on the mat, allowing Silver Wings to climb the ropes ... TORNADO DDT! Mark Curtis crawls into position ... 1! 2! 3! SILVER WINGS HAS DEFEATED KILLER KYLE! Silver Wings slides to the outside and celebrates the win after taking a beating as Killer Kyle argues with Mark Curtis who is still feeling the affects of the ref bump. We return to Bob Caudle who thanks everyone for tuning in and to catch us next for more Smoky Mountain Wrestling!

Wrestling at the Chase Central States Wrestling Friday 5-3-1989 from the Chase Park Plaza Hotel St. Louis, Missouri Announce Team: Jay French and "The Professor" Marty Goldstein Match #1 Kevin Clark pinned Ken Jugan. Clark bounced back from a tough loss last time to Sterling with a win over Jugan though it was not as easy as Clark had told the fans. Match #2 Jason Sterling defeated Todd Morton. Fast paced match that saw Sterling go over Morton with a flying cross body block. Match #3 The Sandman & Ray Odyssey w/Miss Peaches went over Anthony Durante & Gary Wolfe by DQ. The Surfers in a hard hitting match against the very physical youngsters came out on the winning end when Bruno's Interns stormed the ring and attacked. All four men chased them off before shaking hands in the middle of the ring. Promoter Bob Geigel came out during a break in the action and announced that next week's main event would be a rematch of the previous bout ... AND ... if Bruno or the Interns interfered, they would be banned from Central States Wrestling for 30 days! Match #4 Central States Heavyweight Title Match Tom Renesto Jr. w/ Lou Albano successfully defended his title against Omar Atlas. Atlas brought everything he had in his veteran arsenal to take the belt off Renesto and nearly succeeded after suplexing the Champ all over the ring. Renesto weathered the storm thanks to his manager. Renesto shook off the cobwebs and again thanks to Albano was able to pick up the win and defend his title, using a foreign object slipped to him.

He actually had two sons that wrestled. I don't remember seeing the other brother, but I do remember seeing Jason wrestle in Texas. Not the biggest guy but do remember him being pretty good. Opener/lower mid-card guy but was always a decent match. That certainly is a shocker to me because Capt. Lou has ALWAYS been the manager of Tom Renesto Jr.

Wrestling at the Chase Central States Wrestling Friday 4-22-1989 from the Chase Park Plaza Hotel St. Louis, Missouri Announce Team: Jay French and "The Professor" Marty Goldstein Match #1 Jason Sterling pinned Kevin Clark. The barefoot Canadian and son of the Missing Link proved to be a tough individual against an equally tough opponent. Following the match, the two shook hands in a show of good sportsmanship. Match #2 The Cuban Assassin and Omar Atlas brawled to a Double Disqualification. Both veterans refused to listen to the referee. Match #3 Anthony Durante & Gary Wolfe defeated The Allen Boys. Tag team action with two very young teams. Promoter Bob Geigel came out during a break in the action and announced the main event as a title match for the Central States Heavyweight Belt. In honor of all those who have wrestled at the Chase in the past, the match would be a purely scientific affair! Match #4 The Interns w/Downtown Bruno lost to The Sandman & Ray Odyssey w/Miss Peaches. It could have gone either way but Miss Peaches took Bruno out of the picture which pushed her boys to victory. Match #5 Central States Heavyweight Title Match Tom Renesto Jr. w/ Lou Albano won over Ricky Santana to become the CSW Champion. One would have thought a scientific match would be more advantageous to Renesto but Santana was up to the task and showed his mat skills. Back and forth the two went with several near pinfalls to get the fans out of their seats. Albano with some trickery, passed a roll of quarters to Renesto before distracting the referee to allow Renesto to cold cock Santana. Ricky Santana was not going to kick out of this one. Tom Renesto Jr. won the title. The fans did their best to inform the referee but to no avail as Albano yanked his man from the ring before someone changed their mind.

This Week ... in Central States Wrestling #1 - While the Central States territory has been largely vacant minus the occasional spot shows here and there, promoter Bob Giegel has moved forward with giving the area a go. Iowa, Kansas and Missouri appear to be the target states for the territory, at least to begin with. - The former St. Louis promotion brought in bigger names which may have been one of the reasons for it's downfall. Geigel has decided to go with the unknown and younger talent route. If the want for wrestling is there, bigger names (ie. higher paid talent) can always be brought in but Giegel said "It's an easier pill to swallow if no one comes out to the matches rather than what St. Louis tried, blowing the bank on just a couple of wrestlers". - As a test over the past week, Central States has been putting on house shows, testing the market as well as setting up their weekly circuit. To not oversaturate the first week's "blitz" of shows, Geigel's been running short cards to create some buzz. As has been found, the gates have been good so the interest is certainly there for the time being. Geigel says "Wrestling fans are a fickle sort, so you have to strike when the iron is hot." - Two programs have been featured on the shows. The main event has been the handsome high flying Ricky Santana and the ring veteran Tom Renesto Jr. but the "star" of this program has been manager Captain Lou Albano. If you ask, Lou will be happy to tell you himself that he's the star of the whole promotion and maybe he's got something there as the fans have flocked to him, no matter what he's done. Lou's been all over the place promoting himself as well as doing whatever he can to help Renesto win. Though it hasn't worked out well for Renesto every time, he has picked up some victories thanks to his manager! - The second feud has been between the babyface Surfers, Ray Odyssey and The Sandman with Miss Peaches against Downtown Bruno's Interns. Bruno has done what he can to help his men win but Miss Peaches has often been the equalizer, keep Bruno out of the picture. - With successful house shows, television would be the next step for the promotion. A weekly show does wonders in drumming up business for the road. No word yet as to when it might happen but rumors have been swirling of preliminary talks with station KDNL, Channel 30 with Friday evenings being the target.

I can not see Jamie Dundee with Adrian Street in West Virginia of all places. Speaking of Dundee, win over Saturn is pretty big. Nightmares/Sheep would have been a good one.
-
That was a really good event with a little bit of everything in it minus Missy Hyatt. The women get some shine with two matches. Interested to see where Terri Power winds up now having shown her feelings towards Rip Rogers. Madusa versus Mimi would have been a very good match circa 1989. Not a fan of John Tatum so seeing him bloodied by Eddie Gilbert is okay in my book. Freebirds/Express is on of those match ups that won't ever go away as both teams want to prove which is better. Two peas from the same pod but from opposite ends of the spectrum. We got to witness the birth of Psycho Sid. This might prove to be a very big event in WCWA history. Couldn't go wrong with Flair or DiBiase as your champion. My money was on Ted but 3-1 odds always wins out. As already mentioned, super solid show that had a lot of bang for the buck. Time to move on for WrestleWar.

International stars, women's wrestling - Maple Leaf Wrestling has a little bit of everything for the fans. Big fan of 666 who looks good here despite being far from home. A win over Rotunda has to be somewhat of an upset, even in Canada. Looking forward to seeing more from the Man from Mexico north of the border.

Central States Wrestling Friday 4-12-1989 from the Casa Loma Ballroom Announce Team: Jay French and "The Professor" Marty Goldstein Match #1 Kevin Clark rolled up Don Allen. Match #2 Jason Sterling defeated Jimmy Jannetty. Match #3 The Sandman & Ray Odyssey w/Miss Peaches beat The Interns w/Downtown Bruno. Promoter Bob Geigel with several announcements for upcoming shows as well as TV in the very near future. He promised Central States Wrestling would bring the very best in professional wrestling to the territory. Lou Albano ran down the crowd before turning his attention towards Ricky Santana. Santana kept his cool the whole time which turned out to be nothing more than a distraction. Tim Renesto Jr. attacked him from behind. Match #4 Ricky Santana won by disqualification over Tom Renesto Jr. Despite the early advantage for Renesto, Santana fought back and frustrated him to the point that Renesto threw him over the top rope for the DQ.

Central States would like to add Bob Geigel as promoter.

Wish I was brought into this discussion because I would have to say no to shows in Tennessee at this time. With as much of the map not being used, the NWA has more than enough other places to spread their wings AND stay out of Tennessee.
-
Probably not as Southern is the face here and after what Reno did to him and Shawn Baxter as shown on TV last week
-
Baby Doll with John Studd is HUGE. Literally. Might change the landscape some for her fortunes with Studd backing her up. Jimmy/Ivan would certainly get fans fired up as the first match out of the gate. Russians are always hated especially in the south. Jimmy Valiant was always good at getting the fans behind him, even he became the old vegan emaciated version a few years from now. Saturn and Kronus, though rookies have a good look and could make some waves in the tag division. Maybe not title material just yet but they might be spoilers.
-
Hopefully Dusty coming in gets a decent run here rather than as the polka-dotted buffoon at the end of his career. I think there are some good match-ups here for him and in the looks department, he shows you don't have to look like Hulk Hogan or Rick Rude to be a success.

Not a fan of Austin Idol so here's hoping Bullet Bob shuts him up and sends him into retirement for good. Idol will regret he picked on Bob Armstrong. Pat Rose was my pick to beat Randy Rose since he wrestled for me in Arkansas but it wasn't to be. Now, he has to take on Brian Adias who I think will dispatch Rose and send him back to the tag team ranks. Vinnie Valentino with a new team. Wondering why he doesn't wrestle? Having seen him in San Antonio, the barefoot wrestler isn't half bad. Not a big guy but had a good look, was very athletic.

Voiceover: You are watching Music City Wrestling on WCAY-TV, Channel 30! Music plays to start the show over wrestling action from Music City's favorites before ending with the MCW logo. Music City Wrestling From the WCAY-TV studios in Nashville, Tennessee! Airing at 10:30 am Central on WCAY-TV, Channel 30 Taped: Thursday, January 11, 1989 Aired: Saturday, January 13, 1989 Bert Prentice & Ronnie P. Gossett IV Danny Davis & Jerry Calhoun - Referees An enthusiastic Bert Prentice hopes that no one missed the fireworks of last week's program to kick off the New Year! Ronnie Gossett continues on his "Justice was Served" kick with the Renestos finally getting the tag team titles after being overlooked time and again. Those two "boys" had to take matters into their own hands ... The fans boo as two men wearing Assassin hoods make their way out, carrying title belts over their shoulders. They talk about the family legacy being cemented as the top family in all of professional wrestling. The Renesto name will go down in history as one of the all time greats and they are just getting started. One of the Assassins pulls out a torn and bloodied mask and holds it up saying this is what is in store for any and all of the pretenders ... The fans cheer as JT Southern makes his way out. The Assassins go into defensive mode but Southern holds his hands up as he isn't looking for any trouble. The Assassins are angry that this is their scheduled time and for Southern to hit the road or this isn't going to end well for him ... We have ourselves a party as Reno Riggins and Princess Dee also come out. Reno calls Southern a very brave man coming out here alone and if he looks around he has the tag team champion Assassins and the future heavyweight champ standing across from him. This could end very badly indeed ... Phil Hickerson marches out and gets between the two parties. There's not going to be any funny business today under his watch. He says The Assassins are right ... this is their TV time but he's interested in hearing what Southern has to say because it must be something important if he is willing to face 2-on-1, then 3-on-1 odds to say it. Southern smiles as he is going to get a chance to say his piece. He asks as the former tag champion, if he is entitled to a rematch? Hickerson and Prentice look at each other before Hickerson says that is the usual standard practice. Southern says he would like to have that rematch ... HERE, TODAY! Reno starts laughing and calls Southern an idiot because he took out Southern's partner, Shawn Baxter and sent him into an early retirement. Hickerson tells Reno to knock it off before asking Southern if he has a partner because he can't allow Southern to go it alone. The calm, cool and collected Southern grins and says his partner is right here which has The Assassins, Riggins, Dee and Ronnie Gossett looking around the studio. Hickerson tells Southern to bring his partner on out but Southern says he doesn't have to, his partner is right here ... IT'S RENO RIGGINS AND HE WOULDN'T HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY! Riggins, Dee, The Assassins, and Ronnie Gossett all go ballistic which brings a smile to Bert's face as he sends us into a commercial break! Don't go away! x-x-x-x-x Local commercials x-x-x-x-x Bert with a run down of the weekly shows Music City will visit ... Camden, Sparta, Lebanon, Springfield, Smyrna, Lafayette, Gallatin! x-x-x-x-x Local commercials x-x-x-x-x We return to Bert and Ronnie P. who is still hot under the collar about the "stunt" JT Southern is trying to pull off. Bert says it is no stunt and defends Southern's choice. Reno Riggins complained about JT "stealing" his partner and the belts when WildSide won the titles and no, he is giving him the chance he wanted. I'd call that a very nice gesture if I was Reno Riggins! In any case, we have a match to get to as Tony Falk takes on Dennis Allen. Ronnie wants to know who the three young men and the one woman following Tony to the ring are? That is his new class of students who we should see in action sometime this year. Gossett says they don't look like much and that Falk should have joined Don Bass instead ... at least they would have been contenders to The Assassins. Tony Falk w/his students versus Dennis Allen. Referee Danny Davis. Falk puts on an early technical exhibition, wrapping up his opponent and putting him into several pinning predicaments while explaining things to his students. Dennis Allen complains about his tights and hair being pulled. Danny Davis with several warnings for Falk. Getting back to business, Falk continues to roll Allen all over the mat but finds Danny Davis admonishing his students rather than making a count. Dennis Allen with a school boy that nearly wins as Davis seems to be right on the count, if not a little fast but Falk is able to escape at the very last instance. Bit of a death stare from Falk for the referee. The fans cheer as Dark Journey makes her way out. She makes eye contact with Danny Davis and has a few words while Falk gets back to business. He grapples Dennis Allen to the mat, locks him in a painful hold and has his opponent taping out quickly, leaving no doubt about it. While Falk leaves victorious with his students, Danny Davis hightails it out of the ring for the back. Joining Bert and Ronnie, Dark Journey has a few choice words for referee Danny Davis. As we all saw last week in Jamie's match and here today in Tony's match, Danny Davis doesn't seem to cut it as an impartial official. Ronnie P. blasts her as being sour grapes because her man is a poor imitation of his father and Tojo Yamamoto was just too old to tie his shoes anymore! Bert talks about her making those accusations previously. She makes a comment about Ronnie probably not being able to tie his shoes but for a different reason which sends him into a tizzy! A laughing Bert sends it to a commercial break! x-x-x-x-x Local commercials x-x-x-x-x Bert with a run down of the weekly shows Music City will visit ... You will find us in Camden, Sparta, Lebanon, Springfield, Smyrna, Lafayette, Gallatin and of course, MCW IS COMING TO A TOWN NEAR YOU! x-x-x-x-x Local commercials x-x-x-x-x We return to Bert and Ronnie who are arguing about what Dark Journey said, not about the poor officiating by Danny Davis but about him being able to tie his own shoes. Ronnie P. says that he can tie his own shoes with his svelte figure. Bert's comment about needing a dictionary goes over Ronnie's head as we turn our attention to the main event. Tag Team Title Match: The Assassins (C) versus JT Southern & Reno Riggins w/Princess Dee. Referee Jerry Calhoun. Southern starts off with a high gear drop kicking assault on the champions, sending them both from the ring in hurry. Baseball slide to the outside nails both champs and the fans are loving it. Back in the ring, JT is able to put one of The Assassins down for a 2 count before the other one breaks it up. The Assassins start to battle their way back after slowing things down and JT escapes to his corner for a tag to Reno Riggins. Riggins is reluctant to come in but is ordered to by the referee. Slowly but surely he warms up and starts to take it to the tag champs. Double team drop kicks on The Assassins and Riggins and Southern come up for a high five. The fans start to back the challengers as they continue to work over their opponents. Ronnie Gossett can't believe Reno is buying into this as Bert gave him an "I told you so". Christmas has come early or late depending on how you look at it. The Assassins might be in for a very short title reign here as JT Southern and Reno Riggins put a beating on the masked men ... even Princess Dee gets in on the cheering along with the fans. Reno works an arm, yanking on it repeatedly as he pulls one of The Assassins back to his corner for a tag ... JT SOUTHERN TURNS HIS BACK ON RENO RIGGINS AND LEAVES THE STUDIO! JT SOUTHERN HAS LEFT HIS TAG TEAM PARTNER HIGH AND DRY! Riggins and Dee can not believe it but The Assassins are now mad and take it out on Reno. Double suplex is followed by a leg drop across his throat after being held over an Assassin's knee. The champs are not looking for a pinfall as they continue to beat on Riggins. Double dropkicks of their own sends him to the outside where the pair run him into the ringside barrier. Princess Dee tries to intervene but gets shoved out of the way. Rolling him back into the ring, one Assassin lifts him into the air while the other one climbs the corner ropes. He comes flying off and plants Reno face first into the mat with a bulldog. No denying the victory here as The Assassins place a boot on RIggins' chest for the 1! 2! 3! Bert tells us our time is up and to come back next week for more wrestling action, right here on WCAY TV 30!
-
Well, well, well ... Jerry Jarrett got himself a new job. Good to see that Eddie and Missy will be keeping an eye on him. Don't want WCW going the way of Memphis, do we? New people, big debuts. WCW is off and running in 1989 and things look to be for the better.
-
New Generation team has some future stars as members who are really very good right now though Erin O'Grady is the star of the match. This is a very talented roster. Big win for Tommy Dreamer over Scotty the Body very early in his career. Can he do it again as Scotty is sure to be back.
-
Neidhart and PCO give you two potentially big stars right off the bat. Saito isn't one to sneeze at either. Larry Winter as the technical wrestler was kind of funny especially with his pre and early ECW days involved in bloody hardcore matches. Like the formatting better this time around.
