Case in point, Vader crashes the post-match interview scene. (Hulk schmoozing with Johnny B. Badd and Brad Armstrong is certainly a bizarre sight.) Hulk gets philosophical about the Butcher, but way, way, WAY too late. That interview needed to come right after the turn. Vader bursts in and FINALLY we get the showdown that we've been waiting for since Flair's retirement. Vader cuts the promo of his career and we get a fantastic chaotic scene. Other than Okerlund doing a shit job and trying to get himself over at the expense of the segment, this was a terrific piece of business.

The timing of this got thrown off by a big fight in the stands that drew the attention of the crowd, hence the delay in the Hulk-Up. Butcher gets convincingly and mercifully killed dead, and Randy Savage after faking us out makes the save from the Faces of Fear. Reuniting the MegaPowers seems like a waste, but on the other hand if you turn Savage here you've pretty much fucked over Vader yet again, and that was a match that needed to happen sooner than later.

Why does Hart's presentation go after Hogan's? This is, shockingly, the greatest day of Jimmy Hart's life.

[1994-12-27-WCW-Starrcade '94] Alex Wright vs Jean Paul Leveque
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in December 1994
The Brain declares that Jean-Paul is going to be a future superstar in 1995 and beyond. He was getting some buzz at the time but I don't think anyone realized to what extent Bobby was speaking the truth. Some pretty good action and offense here despite some hesitance on Leveque's part at times, but with two guys with a combined 3-4 years of experience that's to be expected. A promising start for both of these guys, though Wright was the better overall worker at this point. -
I knew this match's reputation, but still...stunningly good match, with Duggan more than just pulling his weight. Speaking of his weight, he was in better shape here than he had been in years. This isn't just one of Hacksaw's best performances post-Mid-South, it's one of his better efforts period. He throws some good stiff blows and takes some very dramatic yet safe bumps to put over Vader's offense. He even sells while on offense, as though the very act of taking Vader off his feet was exahusting him. And on top of all that he throws in an attempted elbow off the turnbuckle (!!) He had no business ever holding the U.S. title but this match is almost enough to make up for it.

Holy shit, is this the lucha MOTY? I'm not sure that it is, but it's damn close. Felino continues his streak of showing up for one incredible performance per Yearbook before disappearing again. Loved the subtle low blows and all-around dick cheating from him, plus the careful mid-match instant replays. I have GOT to see more of this guy. Pantera was sort of along for the ride for the first two falls but came to play in the third, unleashing some killer dives. There were awesome countermoves all throughout this and the third-fall reversal finish was perfect from both a booking and execution standpoint.

I've said this before but I can't describe how much I love in-ring spots done out of the ring in falls-count-anywhere matches. Here Candido works a fucking abdominal stretch on the floor! If he'd have grabbed the bottom rope for leverage this would be my MOTY. As it stands it's an excellent match, an improvement over their very fine TV bout. Candido lays out Jack afterward, but Boo Bradley makes the save and he and Jack embrace. Jack's missionary position is a success.

Vince's reactions to Lawler are truly hilarious. Best Diesel interview of the year--Lawler cuts a 5-minute scorched-earth promo on him and Diesel says one sentence. Shawn: "He looks like the Cowardly Lion, and I'm gonna send him back to OZ!" Cute. Vince thinks Diesel in the crown is the funniest thing ever, naturally. Bret does an interview from home and sounds so much more like a real person than just about anyone else in the company. Hype for Vinny Pazienza vs. Roberto Duran, and Vinny calls out Shawn Michaels. This was less annoying than the 6-hour hype job for Sugar Ray vs. Lalonde during SummerSlam.

Missing out on Brian Lee in favor of Tracy Smothers is like being dragged to a Puddle of Mudd concert where they cancel and are replaced and you have to "settle" for Tom Petty. Not nearly as good as the Nasty Boys matches but fun, and the hard camera does an admirable job of following all the crazy action. Smothers and Candido take some great bumps and they throw in a few hot near-falls as well, before a perfect finish where Smothers drags Cactus and Candido into the path of Boo Bradley's oncoming splash from the top, squashing Candido and leading to his defeat.

[1994-12-24-WCW-Pro] Hulk Hogan reads Twas The Night Before Christmas
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in December 1994
Seeing Gordon Solie narrate this is just surreal. Not "greeting the arrival of RoboCop" surreal, not "interviewing the Black Scorpion blindfolded" surreal. But perhaps not far off. -
[1994-12-24-SMW-TV] Rock & Roll Express vs The Infernos
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in December 1994
Another magnificent build to a hot match, which Cornette was doing better than anybody in the U.S. The Rock 'n Rolls walking tall while swinging tennis rackets is a pretty iconic moment, or should be at least.- 4 replies

Buddy Landell loves Buddy Landell to death! DWB rents, Landell owns. Budro is such a breath of fresh air to the singles heel side. Cornette has shown everyone how it's done when it comes to booking a "special" babyface. He's put sympathy on Boo without removing the elements of danger to the feud--Boo is believable as an unhinged guy who's making his own bed despite his mistreatment. And Cactus as a deranged babyface brings a much-needed edge to a gimmick like this. The Year of Topical References Continues as Ross and New Jack make references to the (first) 2Pac shooting.

Volk continues to amaze. His technical skills are always off the charts, but he finds new ways to surprise me, whether it's by throwing awesome strikes in previous matches or his great selling here, giving Nagai just a few openings and putting himself in danger without hurting his perception as the more skilled athlete. I loved how chippy things got down the stretch, with both guys mocking each other.

Before we hold the funeral just yet, the WWE has released its magazine staff but at last check was leaving the possibility open of outsourcing the brand to another company. Of course, that would simply delay the inevitable.

Oh Christ. The in-ring stuff against Cactus & Mikey actually had me softening on these two. Rocco & Johnny undo all of that right here. One does have to admit that these two have perfect chemistry together, as annoying as they are.

Bob's most focused (relatively speaking) promo yet, and maybe his best overall. Stern comments axioms for the plebeians, for Mr. McMahon, for Bret Hart, and for Diesel. Diesel vs. Bret at the Royal Rumble. What a great first major challenger for your new #1 babyface. This is like a poor man's version of Hogan having to turn around and wrestle against Bruno at the 2/84 MSG show. I still can't grasp why they couldn't let Backlund keep the belt until at least the Rumble and let Diesel win it there. Diesel makes some hackneyed comments about the colors of Bret's ring attire, trying to balance being "cool" with being a respectful babyface and ending up not being very good as either one.

Is this Matt Borne? I sure hope so. Oh, the post tags say yes. These two do a good job of not letting the rounds break the momentum too much, as the psychology carries through each round rather than them doing a hard reset each time. Both guys work heel but the crowd tends to be on Doink's side, so in a way this is a teaser of what Borne could have done as a babyface Doink in an ideal world. The turn was a horrible idea, but the concept of Doink still wrestling with an edge has some appeal to me. Match went too long for such an abrupt finish, but still good and evidence that Borne still had something to offer in the ring.

I believe the United Center was one of the arenas WCW was able to freeze the WWF out of during the Nitro Era. The Air Canada Centre and Philips Arena were two others, which is why the WWF always had to run SkyDome and the Georgia Dome. Since then, I think the WWF/E has determined that running Rosemont is easier as it's closer to O'Hare.

[1994-12-17-WCW-Saturday Night] Blacktop Bully vignette
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in December 1994
A lawyer from the SEC wants to investigate where Col. Parker got his bailout money from. Funny! And a creative excuse to get a camera in there. The Bully's cell is filled to the brim with cartons of cigarettes, which is also a great touch. Objectively this is a silly gimmick and a ridiculous step down for Dustin, probably in favor of another one of Hogan's buddies. But I'm enjoying these segments way, way more than I should. I don't know who was behind them but they're a million miles away from the mini-movies, filmed vignettes, and amusement park bars of months and years past in WCW. Oh, and there's more. Unbelievably, they've worked out a logical reason for the Bully to get into wrestling! Because he owes Parker and can't pay him back with money! How the FUCK does a gimmick like this get more thought put into it than any other gimmick in WCW history to this point?- 4 replies

Tammy controls Boo with an empty bag that supposedly has Boots the cat in it, a non-fact that even Ross subtly alludes to on commentary. Shockingly decent action here. I have no opinion on Balls Mahoney whatsoever but he looked like a perfectly acceptable worker in this, throwing some wicked punches. I like the DCOR, as Ross immediately jumps in to point out that "that will not happen at Christmas Chaos!" Good use of a non-finish for free television. Cactus is always gold at Christmastime. I giggle when even HE can't get through a Brian Lee-involved promo without invoking his height and weight.

I wonder if this "agent" is Bob Harmon, an old Midwest-area worker. Good sneak attack by Buddy, and I'm really looking forward to what he does in this run. He's a worthy challenger for the title, something Anthony has rarely had aside from Jake. I like how he took the time to dust himself off after laying DWB out. Everyone (except Robert Gibson, who's just there) is on fire in the next segment. Ross drops more historical bombs, and Cornette is great as usual in responding. Morton promises the wrath of God if Cornette turns on them in their last title match, but Cornette then drops a new wrinkle at the end by promising a surprise at Christmas Chaos. Can't wait! New Jack calls out Cornette for not knowing what doing wrong *really* is. New Jack seems to have a surprise of his own. Landell cuts an awesome money promo, his line about Dirty White Girl and the plastic bag had me almost rolling. What an absurdly grandiose interview. "Ric Flair got beat by a guy who's closer to 60 than he is 30!" Holy shit. One of the best interviews of the year!

[1994-12-17-WWF-Superstars] Heartbreak Hotel: Jeff Jarrett & The Roadie
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in December 1994
Shawn still does most of the talking but this was his best performance on a Heartbreak Hotel yet. I liked the comparison of the Roadie to Diesel's old role.
