Did anyone see tonight's SD!? I know most people are going to talk about Eddie-Benoit but I want to know how Crazy-Rey turned out. Crazy never really impressed me. Some of his ECW stuff was enjoyable and his indy stuff that I have seen is forgettable. However,I haven't really seen any of his stuff in Mexico so I was curious how he has adjusted to the WWF machine.

I don't want to let this post die so I will only say that I am rewatching the WM13 and SS96 matches back to back before I respond to Kawada's post.

07/17 - Thoughts on the following wrestlers
goodhelmet replied to Loss's topic in NMB Wrestling Archive
Mine was black... just for the record. But yeah, the sombrero was there and it was written in fiesta colors that blended together. -
Hopefully, with Earl gone, and HBK on his last legs, maybe... just maybe... we can put an end to killing off Canadian crowds by reminding them of Montreal every single time they tour our neighbors to the North. It is also one less excuse to remind Candians that they have to bring it up every time the Fed goes passing through.

Hey SMS, can you give some examples of the bumps these guys took that would make you include them on this list? Was there a certain match that made you think "Shit, that guy can bump!"?
-
I think one of my favorite bumpers is Kikuchi. I was watching a couple of matches the other day (the Fantastics match and the super-famous Can Ams match) and Kikuchi was never afraid to take the bump... ever. I don't know how many times I said to myself "That has to hurt" and it probably did. His selling was also an amazing thing as he grimaced and squealed everytime the opponent would contort him in wierd positions. You guys stole my thunder on the Midnights.

I voted WCW as long as the emphasis is on WCW alone and not NWA. I don't think most of the people here have seen a huge chunk of the NWA. Hell, I saw most of it when i was a kid and am just now revisiting it after 15-20 years. I doubt many have had the same exposure. That could have been the problem with the Tag teams. The best tag teams were around before many of the guys here even started watching wrestling.

Quite simply because the RnR drew more and had better matches with the original MX across different territories. They had a great run against the Horsemen and decent stint in SMW. Eaton and Lane just were not together long enough and certainly did not have as big of an impact as the Rock N Rolls.

I disagree strongly about the Survivor Series amtch. I did a review at the old SNKT and it is one of the strongest performances for any WWF match. Everything in that match seemed to click just right. I prefer that to the Mania match any day of the week. Surprisingly, I gave Austin the credit for the match working so well, not Bret Hart. It still doesn't account for you saying that his change of style is why he became so over. It had hardly anything to do with the change of style but the storylines. Shit, the basic character was the same at KOR 96 as it was at Over the Edge 98. It was the storyline and involvement with McMahon. The brawling might have been a direct result of who he was forced to wrestle in 1998 but it didn't stop him from leaning on it when he didn't have to work that style. Maybe he became lazy or maybe that was what was expected of him or maybe he was just too limited but he could have mixed it up in the Benoit matches, the Angle matches or even that horrible Flair match. He chose not to. The only significant Bret Hart-Austin matches in 1997 were BRAWLS. I already considered the possibility that the WWF was forced to change because thier premiere wrestler, most capable of having a "mat" classic was screwed at Survivor Series. On a personal level, I prefer when wrestlers work holds and focus on body parts and do logical things to tell their story. It can be done successfully and to perfection without all the trappings of "sports entertainment". You can also have a brawl that is deeper and means more than just running around the crowd (as too many WWF matches fell back on during its peak). You can do your signature spots within the context of the match and still have the intense "I hate your guts" atmosphere. I think the WWF failed to realize this in most of 1998 and 1999 and it wasn't just because Bret Hart up and left.

I have been telling you for months to check out Homicide vs. Trent Acid from ROH 2003. I sent you the disc. Now, use it and remember why you love wrestling and why matches like this are embarassing.
-
I might agree with you on the Austin thing except that he more than held his own with Ricky Steamboat and Bret Hart in their feuds, two guys who excelled at working on the mat. Also, I have to disagree with you on WHY Austin became as over as he did. It had nothing to do with him brawling and almost everything to do with his out-of-ring persona. Plus, while he was gaining momentum prior to the McMahon feud, it was with McMahon that really propelled him to the op. yes, you believed he was a dirt redneck with an axe to grind. People rallied behind him and lived vicariously through his actions. Brawling had nothing to do with it. And quite frankly, with a few exceptions here and there (WM13), Austin's style did change dramatically after the accident. He may have had to work within his limitations but it wasn't always an improvement.

John Cena ? vs Chris Jericho - man, Cena is such a crap shoot when it comes to having decent matches that I don't know if Jericho can do enough to pull a good match out of him. However, I am definitley glad that JEricho is actually in the position to try. Batista ? vs Hassan - This is fucking stupid. Elevate Hassan because the crowd shit on his angle, and after he was effectively squashed on RAW? HBK vs Hulk Hogan - I am going to go out on a limb and say that this match will be shit on all the way to the day of the event and then turn out to be the show stealer, thus leaving the two world champions left in the dirt, playing to a dead crowd. Casket Match Undertaker vs Randy Orton - This can't be good. Edge and Snitsky vs Kane and Matt Hardy - This sounds fucking stupid. First of all, putting Kane and Matt in the same ring together just reinforces the fact that the stupid Kane storyline we were forced to sit through was a bad idea. Also, the people want to see Hardy vs. Edge and Kane and Snitsky shouldn't even be on the fucking card. I don't like the direction this is headed at all. Chris Benoit ? vs JBL -Besides the conclusion to Rey-Eddie, the match I am looking forward to the most. I really want to compare Benoit to Eddie in terms of what they are able to get out of JBL. Carltio ? vs Shelton Benjamin - I have no faith in this match to be any good. Big Show vs Kurt Angle - We've seen it before. If this was Eddie-Show, I might be stoked. However, what was the point of moving Agnle to RAW if he was just going to feud with Show? Hell, you could have kept both guys on SD! and saved us all the trouble. Eddie Guerrero vs Rey Mysterio Jr. - This is really contingent on how much time they give it. If it goes a good 15 minutes, it has all the makings of a great match. If it curtain jerks and the Fed rushes it then it won't satisfy anyone. I am really torn on this card. ON the one hand, I really want to see JBL-Benoit and Eddie-Rey but there is so much shit that I don't want to have to sit through.

Fantastics again but I feel I need to explain this one. I already mentioned in another thread that the Fantastics had to follow in the footsteps of the RnR each time they went to a territory. Well, each time, I think the Fantastics left a stronger impression on me than the RnR did. Then the Fantastics go to Japan and get some great matches over there.
