  1. Get the Lynch Portland set. More fun than a WCW/WWF season set
  2. Genau. Kann mich an das Intro mit Gottschalk erinnern
  3. "[undertaker] kept getting pushed to the top despite never drawing there" When wrestling was trendy in the mid 90s in Germany they had him on the highest rated show over here (~20 million viewers in a country of 80 million). Most people knew the Undertaker over here. Quite possible more than Hogan. And believe me, Vince didn't have the power nor the money to get him onto that show, especially in a country where wrestling was always looked down on like strip clubs.
  4. IIRC Dave O'Neill was on TSM until he had his "internet retirement" 2004'ish. I think I remember that he had a feud thingie with Coey, but I might mix things up. Not really one of those infamous IWC people, but he had potential. I had to think for a minute to remember him
  5. Yes and no. It's not really gossip, as it is a well established fact. But you are right, it is pointless as we don't have the authority to judge. This is a personal matter. One of the most private things that can be. How can we as mere fans lambast or even mock it. Would you do the same with a neighbour or coworker? No, of course not.
  6. The funny thing is that the exact same thing could be said about "his" wrestling, too. It's all perspective. Maybe he could say realistic wrestling is a 1.0 on a scale. AWA / ICW Poffo might be 1.5 , a good southern brawl with scientific elements is 2.0 , Memphis / WWWF / NWA is 3.0 , WWF is 4.0 , WWE is 5.0, CZW is 10.0 and TNA is still shitty @ Robert: Guck doch wie es gerade überall darbt, und zwar überall. Sorry guys, but it wouldn't interest you anyway ^^
  7. Yes, they often didn't have a storytelling aproach. The European heavyweights resisted storytelling quite long, too.
  8. Probably not. I don't think most aces are good contenders. The most interesting guys in this aspect might be Hogan and Sammartino. Do you think they should have done it like Lawler? Actually I would have liked Hogan with a Lawler'ish approach. That might have pleased the old school / smarks. It's actually quite similar to the old 3 MSG show feud system, but I doubt that you can reproduce it with PPVs or TV.
  9. Regarding the "Reality is Unrealistic" issue I can recommend you all to watch more 50s and Inoki era NJPW. Its a stark contrast to the Funks/AJPW tight storytelling style. I was rather dumbfounded when I first saw some of those matches, they seemed disjointed, I was really irritated at times. Then I noticed that match quality is NOT like a test where you start with 100% and for every logic error you get points deducted. Stuff like Inoki vs Hogan with a million stand ups where pretty much the whole match story was always resetted, Europeans not giving a rats ass about how to sell ongoing limbwork (like "first you shake it off, then you limb around, then you clutch your leg in agony, then you almost tap, then you tap") and 1950s tackle weirdness broadened my horizon
  10. Is the Nakajima vs KENTA thread on DVDVR any good? That might be an interesting topic regarding puroresu. And re: boards & opinions: I remember when I started working for a wrestling homepage in 2001 there were like 20 different (German) homepages, most of them were nothing special, a couple of guys did the whole workload. The influx of newsreporters (aka translators), reviewers and people who wrote show reports was seemingly neverending. Reports are important as the younger fans can't read English sites, so there was and is always demand for reports, be it translated stuff like the great TNA reports that the TSM founder did or self-written stuff. Of course I might be a little deluded, but that might also be because of the fact that nowadays the two biggest sites we have are that much bigger (databases, biographies etc / let me copy what is on our site: 58.688 Shows - 2.054 Championships - 7.870 Wrestler Bios - 3.333 Teams - 707 Stables) that we just need a shitload of people just maintaining it. Anyways, we even started doing live coverage for TV and PPV. I did live coverage for almost three years, getting up at 3AM 1-3 times a week. It's pretty insane that we are still doing it. But it got harder and harder getting people to do live coverage for our (and other sites). Then the reports for Smackdown and Raw got shorter and shorter. When I did them I did play by play, every single damn move. Now most times its a sentence a minute (minus spot descriptions). And its getting harder and harder to maintain our prior niveau. So I'd definately say that interest is down. Interestingly we were able to recruit the most competent guys when the wrestling business flourished, so the quality of fans you have is pretty much bound to the quality of the wrestling business. Will that change? Yes, hopefully soon. It's going to be really interesting when the next boom period is hitting the IWC. And if not, there still might be a couple of Wrestlelicious fans who will stumble on the youtube/Veoh AJW accounts. And they will give us new viewpoints on the 60 minute draw between Manami Toyota and Kyoko Inoue. I am looking forward to it.
  11. So you also agree with Funks statement about Masato Tanaka?
  12. Them same guys call one of the Dragon Gate 6 man matches from ROH a classic. So really. You are ignoring context. Booking a card is a delicate process, do not underestimate it and the effects that it can have. It's pretty much the "pick your spots" mentality, which means that one Dragon Gate match a year will give you the maximum efficency of such a match. Like Angle vs Benoit Royal Rumble 2003 was awesome because it was the only match that was worth a dime of your money
  13. I try to remember the Monday Night Wars and ECW. With them over, you noticed that pretty much every program had its own fans. Yes, you can hamper the highest possible ratings of a certain program, yet that's rather shortsighted. I think even the WCW C-Shows had their own legitimity
  14. Takada I'd understand. Maeda I would kinda understand. But why Funaki?
  15. I really don't get the "they want Funaki and Sakaguchi" notion. Can anybody help me? I know their basic careers, but don't know why they should be rated above guys like Fujiwara or Hamada. Looking at the weekly pro show in 1995 I might even get the blasphemous thought that Ryuma Go might have as good as a career as Funaki. LOL Aliens I guess
  16. The thing about wrestling is that you do get into these kind of arguments. Wrestling is ambivalent and open to interpretation, so differing opinions will always happen. I wouldn't call the resulting arguments per se stupid
  17. Wasn't 7-5, 500-pound the norm? If not, what was it? I vaguely remember him being billed at 8 feet, though it could be another ridiculous claim for another wrestler
  18. http://forums.thesmartmarks.com/index.php?showtopic=94663 No clue, I've tuned out years ago. Who is even left from the old days?
  19. I think they have to be agressive. Think about the Holllywood Legion matches out there, a lot of those guys had a name value back then but that has diminished to a great extent. And if WWE doesn't want a whole new batch of wrestlers to lose the value they have left they need to get their names back out there before they are entirely forgotten
  20. I'd rate Ware over Rodz. I think Ware was during his UWF stint a pretty valuable guy. Heck, that's probably the only reason he was signed as he really didn't fit the mold of what Vince wanted. Rodz on the other hand was only valuable as a policeman and trainer, I don't think his CA stints can be compared with Ware. There are quite a number of guys who had reasonable success at the west coast post-1970 whose accomplishments are pretty much forgotten so he's not alone.
  21. I don't think the situation is much different from Crockett vs. The Rest in after 1984 and Coraluzzo vs. The Rest in the 90s Can you remember how many NWA affiliates were around 15 years ago and how nothing ever came around? Its the same right now. Or remember when TNA hijacked the NWA titles. Some sole promoter will get hold of the titles and the others won't have any good out of it
  22. Source? As Google is changing their video search I can only provide this link http://www.google.de/search?q=Toukon+Retsu...lient=firefox-a I think the dumbkitty domain was the official stream site
  23. I would open up a new thread for it. When Vince the Elder wanted to market Hogan as an Irish Hogan declined because it would have restricted his mainstream appeal and it was unrealistic as Hogan was way too awesome to be a low Irishman. Everybody but Vince did agree with Hogans brilliant idea of billing him "From Planet Krypton". The plans were subsequently shelved as Hogan was booked to win against Fujinami, Inoki and Choshu in a handicap shoot match. Hogan thinks iMcMahons cancer was responsible for him declining Hulks brilliant idea He died the next day.
  24. I also thought of Abby, but that are long term effects. I am curious about recent scar tissue and stuff like that. The short term healing of the body might make regular blading problematic Necro Butcher to Thumbtack Jack, who was still bleeding out of his ears hours after his match: "Stop Bleeding!"
  25. It would be interesting to search for wrestlers who did double shots and bladed each time. I wonder if thats even possible to do for over a week
