Between the Sheets #47 (June 7-13, 1997)
TravJ1979 replied to KrisZ's topic in Publications and Podcasts
With all the pot shots at Meltzer's writing, it sure seems like Bix is slowly morphing into Meltzer; right down to the laugh, cadence of speech, and relentless over explaining. -

[1998-02-18-ARSION-Grand Opening] Yumi Fukawa vs Candy Okutsu
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in February 1998
Believe this was the first match on the first show for Arsion. This was incredible. Everything was crisp. The shoot style spots beat every faux-shoot stuff thus far this year besides the Tamura match. It makes Goldberg's leg locks look like the most amateur stuff on an amateur show and also made the BattleArts match look bad in comparison. Probably my MOTY thus far, if not it is pretty damn close. I want to dig up the full version of Ohtani/Liger from earlier in the month first.- 8 replies

I used to love Douglas back in '98. I guess it was because I dug his "shoot" style of addressing the fans, etc. Looking back, he's the shits and that promo style is a snooze fest. So they are building to Living Dangerously with Taz v. Bigelow, RVD v. Scorpio, Sabu v. Sandman, and Snow/Storm v. Douglas/Candido when none of those feuds are progressed by this match. It seemed like it would lead to RVD v. Sabu by the end of it. Typical late 90's ECW crap.

[1998-02-21-ECW-Cyberslam] Justin Credible vs Tommy Dreamer
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in February 1998
Enjoyed seeing Jason get bloodied. Dream randomly pulling at barbed wire is such a cry for attention, even by ECW standards. That didn't correlate with the "hatred" these two were supposed to show. ECW way past its prime. -
[1998-02-21-ECW-Cyberslam] Louie Spicolli Tribute

I thought this was well done. Better than throwing up a graphic and have someone who has been totally irrelevant since 1980 be a dick about it. -
[1998-02-21-WWF-Raw Saturday Night] Faarooq vs Steve Blackman
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in February 1998
Blackman was always so generic and Faarooq "Formerly Ron Simmons, ugh" looks way old here. This was more Rock than anything else. -
[1998-02-21-WWF-Raw Saturday Night] The Rock's gift to Faarooq
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in February 1998
There was a version of this in Memphis around '88 I think with the Stud Stable and Fuller giving Brickhouse a watermelon or something racial like that. The Rock is #2 in WWF on the mic at this point. Not even close. -
[1998-02-21-WWF-Raw Saturday Night] Michael Hayes and Kane
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in February 1998
I hate this "formerly Michael Hayes," "formerly Terry Funk," bullshit. Hayes was eating this up, but it was sad to see. Loved the Bearer line though. -
[1998-02-21-WWF-Raw Saturday Night] Interview: Steve Austin
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in February 1998
The fanny back takes the bad ass out of anyone. Still Austin delivers yet again on the mic. -
[1998-02-21-WWF-Raw Saturday Night] Jim Cornette promo
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in February 1998
We go from hilarious ~SHOOT@! style rants that Cornette is known for to this half-baked attempt to turn it into an intro for the new Midnight Express a little bit later on. This felt 100% like Cornette being forced to perform Russo material. -
[1998-02-21-WWF-Raw Saturday Night] Interview: Marc Mero & Sable
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in February 1998
I like face Sable pre-wrestler days because she barely spoke. Once she won the title and/or turned heel I wanted to pierce my eardrums with a rusty needle when she spoke. -
[1998-02-21-WWF-Raw Saturday Night] Chyna and Steve Austin
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in February 1998
Great Austin and great package on Chyna (no pun intended). My god it amazes me how on point they are with Austin. Zero missteps. -
[1998-02-19-WCW-Thunder] Randy Savage and the NWO
TravJ1979 replied to Loss's topic in February 1998
Perfect summation of WCW 1998. Let's use what could have been the hottest heel to setup an angle that is three months past expiration already. -
If not for this gimmick and Tough Enough, Snow would have been an afterthought even more so than he is now. What a fall from grace.

Last month, Bret was having a hot promo battle with Ric and the WCW MOTY candidate. Now he is relegated to interacting with Brian fucking Adams in a turn seen coming from a mile away. Yeah, good guys always come to the ring through the crowd with a long, black trench coat. Ugh.

Not enough to really comment on except that it was a title change by a surprising Martel run in 1998.

I wonder how embarrassed these students, who are now in their late 30's, are looking back at this. I thought college Nitro parties were cool when I was the same age. They most certainly were not.

Had no idea what "Attica" meant when I first saw this. On the bright side, I discovered Dog Day Afternoon. On the dark side, I had to watch 1998 Kevin Nash on my TV.

I remember being super smark at this time and wanting to have Zbyszko's head. I've always hated him anyway.

I was pleasantly surprised by this match. Not a MOTY or anything, but a really fun brawl with Austin coming out of it like THE MAN. The stunner was icing on the cake. Really heated crowd that reminded me of the 2000 Raw 10 man tag. Both from Texas. Really enjoyed this. Forgot to mention that despite Savio being the worst mystery partner in history this side of Road Warrior Animal dressed in the Masked Magicians costume, the crowd was hot.

Blood ran cold and it was time for a change. Raven is boring.
