Video drifted too much into the annoying side of things instead of being edited together different. Looking at all of this together, really shows there was essentially no turning back with keeping the entire NWO together.

[1998-04-04-ECW-Buffalo, NY] Rob Van Dam vs Bam Bam Bigelow
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
I was weary as well at the early going of this, but I credit Bigelow a lot with keeping the pace up here and making this feel more like a fight instead of a collection of spots. The crowd is pretty rabid for RVD and he feels like a bigger deal than he has so far. Joey on commentary tries to put over the narrative that RVD is softening up Bigelow for Sabu at the PPV. The spots RVD does into the crowd are extremely memorable and look great. The finish was a little weird with Sabu giving an assist but then being seemingly conflicted but the moment felt big and RVD has the tv title. (***1/2) -
[1998-04-04-NJPW-Inoki Retirement Show] Antonio Inoki vs Don Frye
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
Muhammad Ali is here in a sad occasion as he has a torch and the permanent glaze is in his eyes of unawareness. The match was pretty exciting for the four minutes it lasted and articulated Inoki's vision of what New Japan would become. Inoki wins with an octopus type submission. (*1/2) Afterwards, we get the retirement ceremony which was fun to watch and Inoki was one of the giants of pro wrestling regardless of how great a "worker" he was. This felt like a fitting sendoff. -
[1998-04-04-NJPW-Inoki Retirement Show] Kensuke Sasaki vs Tatsumi Fujinami
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
Cut to the finish with Fujinami winning in what I thought was a huge upset watching. This gets a great crowd reaction and feels like a victory lap championship win for Fuji at this point in his career. -
One of the better Pulp Fictions in a while. We get Sabu, Fonzie and RVD talking about the upcoming Bam Bam title match vs. RVD and later WrestlePalooza Comedy comes in the form of the BWO and especially FBI. Tommy RIch is going to get a tattoo right now! Douglas delivers one of his better promos laying the landscape for the entire triple threat and talking about how little fear he has for Head and Al Snow. This was effective all around.

[1998-03-30-WWF-Raw] New Age Outlaws vs Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie (Cage)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
Cage match was nothing and a preview of Raw matches to come as it lasts all of 4 minutes. Kid, HHH, and Chyna help the NAO win and they deliver a beatdown to Cactus/FUnk. The NAO are now official members of the new DX army. (*) -
HHH comes out and says that HBK didn't get the job done. This is one of the better solo HHH promos weve seen although I wouldn't classify it as great. The Kid comes out as the newest member of DX and he has some comments for Hogan and Bischoff. I like Ross's line about him telling the truth so far with Bischoff having his head up Hogan's ass. He then says that Nash and Hall would be here if not held hostage. DX feels rebooted and refreshed after Mania.

Rock tells Faarooq that he has a special surprise for him. I guess this was a match with Shamrock. We cut to after the match where Rock bailed and a pissed Faarooq said he has had enough and that he is going to kick Rock's ass. Rock and Faarooq scuffle for a bit with the Nation breaking it up. Suddenly, Rock retreats to the ramp and the Nation starts putting the boots to Faarooq. The Nation has a new leader at it is The Rock.

[1998-03-30-WWF-Raw] More Steve Austin and Vince McMahon
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
Austin is arrested and tells Vince this isn't the end of it. Vince has a little swagger with Austin leaving in the police car. Vince struts to the ring and tells the crowd he can do what he damn well pleases. The flick of the microphone is glorious and Vince is already one of the best heels in the company. -
The Winged Eagle belt is no more. Vince vs. Austin is now a thing full fledged and we get a lot of focus on what the direction of the company will be going forward in that regard. Austin delivers a great promo with the crowd behind him every step of the way and Vince is truly finding his own at being a prick. The stunner got a great reaction from the crowd and they chant Hell Yeah at Austin doing things the hard way.

[1998-03-30-WCW-Nitro] Sting & Lex Luger vs Kevin Nash & Randy Savage
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
Savage is Nash's partner. We cut to the end with Hogan coming out with the Disciple and they help Nash... Maybe the NWO isn't quite dead yet. Nash gets a pinfall over Luger.- 4 replies

Jericho dedicates the match to Dean Malenko. Jericho says that he let a lot of people down when he quit after losing. Jericho says that he has shamed his father enough and that he wasn't a quitter like him. Marty Janetty comes out looking just like he did in 1993 with the same gear as well. 2 minute match with Jannetty getting a flurry of offense and then Jericho coming back and getting the Liontamer for the win. (*) Jericho still has some time and decides to list his 1,004 holds. Great stuff.

WCW responds to Mania by immediately bringing out Hogan and the entire NWO. Hogan calls out Piper again, arent we past this yet. This is a very pro-NWO crowd. The Disciple gets named and Hogan says he is the #1 man that worships the crowd Hogan walks on. Hogan then turns his attention to Nash. He says he doesn't trust Nash and asks him to go get a partner. Nash walks out to a big pop and Big Sexy is being pushed as his new moniker. Nash states that he has found a partner already and challenges Hogan to guess who it is. NWO is in complete disarray.

[1998-03-29-WWF-Wrestlemania XIV] Post-Show Press Conference
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
Big time press conference with a lot of reporters. Pretty softball type stuff but Austin is the star cutting some great promos and feeling like he belongs on the stage with anyone. Someone asks Vince if he is turning into a bad guy in a funny moment. Tyson has a great line to end it that if the price was right, he would fight a lion. WWF feels big time with this event and the pressure is on WCW now. -
[1998-03-29-WWF-Wrestlemania XIV] Shawn Michaels vs Steve Austin
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
I agree with a lot of Gregor's points. The match does a have a huge match feel and the moment is there for Austin. I also want to commend Shawn during this match as you could tell he was in an extreme amount of pain and gutted through best he could. However, this match does have a disjointed and unfocused feel with Shawn on control and there is a feeling of biding time to the big moment at the finish. I dont really like modern New Japan switching reversals in rapid succession now so I wont be hypocritical and say the finishing sequence did a ton for me besides getting over the stunner as a knockout finish. Austin gets his big moment, Tyson was serviceable in his role and I think his count was fairly fine, and the WWF has a huge star now. (***1/4)- 14 replies

[1998-03-29-WWF-Wrestlemania XIV] The Undertaker vs Kane
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
We cut to the finish with Taker giving Kane a third tombstone and winning the match even though Kane kicks out right at the three count. Bearer grabs a chair after the match and gets slugged down but that allows kane to take Taker out after the match and retain his heat letting the viewer know this feud was far from over.- 10 replies

One of my favorite celebrity segments of all time as Pete Rose becomes a huge heel railing on the Boston fans. I also think this is some great Jerry Lawler commentary with his "MAN" after every insult. Kane comes down and gives him a tombstone to a huge pop and new feud is born.

This match didnt have near the heat I thought it was. I also again thought the NAO didn't really hold up their end of the bargain in being able to keep a ferocious, violent pace. Some of the spots were cool like Billy and Cactus falling through the ladder and the ending was nice without the bait and switch that happens the last night but I was expecting something chaotic in the same vein as the Nasties vs. Cactus feud of 1994 and this didn't hit that mark at all. [1998-03-29-WWF-Wrestlemania XIV] The Rock and Gennifer Flowers
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
Rock keeps calling her Ginny and actually thinks the term leader is beneath The Rock. He prefers ruler. He gives his opinions on a lot of issues going on in the world right now and does numerous jokes about interns knowing their role and "orally" doing things the right way. -
[1998-03-29-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
After seeing their head dropping fiasco in 1997, it was refreshing to see them go back to this type of match of working holds and letting things breathe. I can understand people watching this match in isolation and get a killing time vibe, but I thought it did a lot to bring the series back into focus and to build anticipation for the showdown at the Tokyo Dome that was incoming. Misawa once again is beat on for the majority of the match and his midsection is worked over. The final 5-6 minutes of this match were dramatic even though a draw seemed inevitable and only the #4-5 finishers of each man got busted out. This is probably middle of the road overall in the series but I was happy to watch it and still thought it was a great match. (****)- 7 replies
