Jericho runs down the list of trophies he has collected including Dean Malenko's dignity now. Jericho has been the best consistent thing in 1998 WCW so far since the Flair vs. Hart feud fizzled.

Some scantily clad women on the sands of Panama City are dancing. Johnny Grunge is handing out candy. This was a recipe for disaster bringing the wrestlers into this environment.

Luna vs. Sable being hyped as the main event was a ballsy move. I love intertwining storylines and this had them in droves. You had Sable wanting a piece of Luna with the hot crowd. Sable hurts her leg and Kane's music fires up. Mero bails and abandons his wife furthering that storyline. Then just as kane is going to attack Sable, we get the return of Undertaker and the Mania match is on. WWF feels so much hotter than WCW right now and peaking towards Mania.

[1998-03-15-WCW-Uncensored] Hulk Hogan vs Randy Savage (Cage)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
I think Starrcade 97 is probably the jumping off point or at least where JJ makes the title vacant, but this may be the direct point where shit makes little to no sense from this point forward. They had done so much to damage Sting in just three months and the aura of Savage as a wild man was completely escaped. I am really interested to see how much of an out Goldberg was for them that they failed to utilize but there has been more groan inducing moments in 2.5 months of 1998 WCW than all of 1997.- 10 replies

Michael Cole narrates a video showing how Austin is a rebel against the corporate establishment. Austin does a great job explaining his roots and how he became who he is today. They use hometown video and quotes to drive this point home. Another great video.

Another stunning piece of hype about this match. We get Shawn's WWF career plight and it does a great job of showing Shawn's attitude even in moments where he was a face. We get some clips of Shawn on talk shows and tons of dancing. We see his DX antics and then it ends in putting over how dangerous SCM is. What a great video package and something that doesn't get talked about nearly enough.

[1998-03-16-WWF-Raw] New Age Outlaws, Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
Billy and Charlie are wrestling with Road Dogg providing commentary on the house mic. Dogg complains about a closed fist and then enters the ring for a DQ. Charlie cleans house and hits a DDT on Billy on top of the belt. Road Dogg gets strung up and elevated by Cactus and Charlie. Cactus cuts a good promo about not leaving your partners side and that his ass better call somebody. Well done stuff. -
[1998-03-15-WCW-Uncensored] Hulk Hogan vs Randy Savage (Cage)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
When they do the wide shot, you cant really see shit. Savage is a bloody mess and Hogan sends him into the cage. Crowd heat is currently nonexistent. They randomly just leave the cage and fight on the floor. Savage climbs to the top of the cage and does that crazy ass double axehandle again. Disciple comes down and grabs the keys. He drags Hogan away with Savage on top of the cage. Sting repels down to even up the odds. This does get a better reaction than Sting has recently but who could possibly give a fuck about The Disciple. Out of nowhere, Savage decks Sting but he isn't back into the fold. What the fuck was this. Completely dumb ending and the second time in two years Savage has turned on Sting and it has made no sense. Really dire stuff.- 10 replies

I don't know what they had planned if anything when Hall won WW3 but this is totally forgotten. Sting decking Dusty on the apron is interesting and feels like a WCW legacy moment. Curtis gets taken out and Dusty tosses Hall brass knuckles. Sting reverses an Outsider's Edge into a Scorpion Death Drop. Sting and Rhodes go face to face and Sting crotch chops at Dusty. What a mess as this seems to set up a dilemma between Rhodes and Sting that went nowhere.

[1998-03-15-WCW-Uncensored] DDP vs Chris Benoit vs Raven
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
I can see this as pretty revolutionary to the WCW audience at the time, but I was immune to the whole thing. The spots were pretty contrived and the three way format didn't allow the intensity level to match the previous two months Benoit matches on PPV due to the different pairings within the match. I did like some of the psychology that happened within the match like Raven/Benoit teaming up to isolate DDP by sending him through the Uncensored sign but overall the match felt fairly uneven. Page's comeback into the match got huge pops. The Diamond Cutter into the table looked awkward but brutal at the same time. A good match, but not really a great one and a match that loses some of its luster over the years. ***- 7 replies

Johnny B Badd / Marc Mero... Time to Revisit his Career
soup23 replied to goodhelmet's topic in The Microscope
So when did Johnny get good. Feels like in some ways, one of the biggest cases of someone flipping a switch as he is dreadful in 1991. -
Cut to the finish. Malenko gets a nice nearfall reversing a dive from the top. Malenko works well at blocking the Liontamer. Crowd pops big when Malenko reaches the ropes. Tony/Bobby on commentary are really good at putting that counter over. Malenko then hits a gutbuster from the top and Malenko looks poised to winning this one. He goes for the flying leg lariat, but Jericho is able to reverse it into the Liontamer. Malenko is inches away from the ropes but Jericho pulls him back into the middle and Malenko taps. Damn good finish and I would like to see this one in full. The Liontamer has been put over big the past couple of months. Gene rubs it in Dean's face and says he should have won the match tonight. Dean conveys his frustration and emotion well. Gene brings up that Dean is now 0-4 in the past four PPVs. Gene calls him a loser. Holy shit, Gene is shooting. Gene asks where Dean goes from here and Malenko simply says..... home. Extremely effective stuff.

That bullrope match ranking infuriates me every time I see it. The bullrope gimmick isn't a great one but sometimes gimmick matches seemed to be subtracted based on hating the gimmick. Would I rather this Sunday's Ambrose/Rollins match to not be a lumberjack match? Sure, but if they are able to come up with a creative way to work the stip, you bet I will give them credit for it.

I have watched six shows in four days which is no easy task. The shows have all been decent to great but not once have I told myself that I am watching the greatest wrestling tournament of all time. I haven't watched a match yet that I would put above Misawa vs. Kawada from the 95 Carnival, much less the Kawada vs. Taue and Misawa vs. Taue final from those shows. I think the hyperbole is really unfortunate because these are good shows, but seeing constant reviews saying that a match was alright and then giving it *** is taking me to my breaking point. Nagata vs. Fale being ranked at ***3/4 in the VOW review of that show is the most egregious example. There wasn't a cohesive story at all in that match and while I didn't hate it as much as Dylan, it sure as fuck wasn't on the brink of being a great match. It is silly in some sense to get worked up over a star rating, but I aspire to remember a decent amount of the matches I have classified as great in my eyes. If multiples star ratings are being thrown out, this gets muddled. A *** match is still "good" and not an embarrassment on any show.

Place to Be Podcast Episode 325: Royal Rumble 2003
soup23 replied to Bigelow34's topic in Publications and Podcasts
It may not stick out to you right away but I would say Royal Rumble 2007 has the same variance in my opinion. I liked Angle vs. Benoit from Rumble 2003 well enough last time I watched, but at best it would be ****1/2 for me and behind Umaga vs. Cena from Rumble 2007. Kennedy vs. Batista is probably "better" than Steiner vs. HHH but not by a whole hell of a lot and it certainly isn't as interesting to go back and watch in retrospect. -
[1998-01-03-NWA 2000] Cham Pain & Venom vs Surge & Kid Dynamo
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
I would say 2001 Zenjo turned the corner with the Super 8 final being Low Ki vs. American Dragon. It may have just been the area i was visiting at the time (czwfans.com, dvdvr) but that was really when I heard about a ton of different guys instead of just the usual Don Montoya, Reckless Youth, etc. -
He did a bit. I thought he towed the line well between being someone that you can tell thought it was better in the "good ol days" and not giving any value to the talent of today. I thought his opinions about working indies today were pretty astute and he mixes in some interesting stories here and there.

This was my favorite Vintage Vault Pre-viewing match I have done so far in HHH vs. Scott Steiner from the 2003 Royal Rumble. I don't think the match is any good but do have a severe problem with the way the failures of the match have been explained throughout the years. I also think this brings up inconsistencies and expectations with wrestling fans as a whole to a certain extent. http://placetobenation.com/vintage-vault-pre-viewing-royal-rumble-2003/

I started the task of trying to catch up on the G-1 before the final night. I am trying to write more real time reviews with time-stamps to get over the binge - feeling of watching a wrestling tournament like this in a real condensed time-frame. I fully expect things will be over-exaggerated/under-exaggerated based on this concept. Nice nugget in the latest interview with Ricky Morton where he talks about Doug Dillinger being a police officer in Charlotte and getting a retirement from there before he started full time in WCW. Only have about 20 minutes left, but I have enjoyed the Morton interview overall.
