  1. Mankind coming out right after that promo as Jack was great. He was practically doing an Orphan Black angle in 1998. Goldust is also 2 for 2 on this night with Dudedust. He does the same dance moves as Dude. These two could have probably had a good lumbering match around this time. Austin comes down to the ring after Mankind had the mandible claw on and stuns both of the competitors. He grabs JR mic and cuts a promo on the announce table. (DUD)
  2. Cactus does a promo at Beaver Stadium. Cactus says the greatest warrior he has ever known is Terry Funk. We then get clips from their matches in Japan and Cactus talks about those wars bringing them close together. Cactus says that Funk putting pantyhose on his head is ridiculous but to each his own. This is a great promo of the damage they will inflict on the NAO and they finally don't hide the fact at all that Funk was under the persona.
  3. Hulk Hogan may be in the Royal Rumble! It is on option 3 of the hotline. Something that big, looks like it at least could be option #1.
  4. DOA comes out. Cornette is on the ramp and announces the RNR Express. They come out to The Rockers music and look exactly the same gear wise as they did in 1985. Cornette says this is the tag wrestling that was prevailing in the NWA.
  5. Mero comes out for his match and his microphone problems. He introduces Sable and out comes Sabledust. This is my favorite Goldust incarnation yet as he struts down in hgih heels, a g-string, and blond wig.He disrobes Mero as Mero states all that he asks is that she follow his every command. JR on commentary is killing this off course.
  6. Stone Cold pulls his pickup truck into the arena to a thunderous reaction. He gives a in-ring interview with Cole and has the crowd going crazy. Stone Cold says he wont be hard to find a the Rumble drawing tonight and marks himself with a bullseye. Austin doesn't want any BS from anyone in the WWF. Thats the bottom line is now a full blown slogan. Austin is looking more like the man every week. Clips were shown from MSG for the Celebrity Death Match Promo for MTV. This was about as good as they could do in making Austin a spokesman without a sell out.
  7. DX are living it up in the back of the limo. HBk takes a dig at Bret's saying and says he has something for the Undertaker tongiht. Looks like it is going to be a full moon in State College HHH says as HBK moons the people outside of the sunroof in the limo.
  8. Macho and Hogan are at ringside for The Outsiders. The announcers are referencing some problems that the Steiners have had lately. HMMMM. These two teams never were able to put together a real good match in my opinion and this looks to be the same. Rick climbs up for the bulldog but gets tripped up by Hogan. Rick is resilient looking kicking out of a fall away slam with the feet on the ropes and a cheapshot from Nash. Ref bump occurs and everyone gets laid out. Savage hits a an elbow drop from the top onto Steiner but he wanted it to be Nash. The Outsiders win back the tag belts. Savage very subtlety doesn't have any NWO paraphernalia on and him and Nash are locked in a heated exchange as the credits role.
  9. Fresh off getting embarrassed by DX, Neidhart arrives in WCW. Neidhart says he was disturbed to hear Flair say he was the best last week. This of course draws out Flair. Flair gives a handshake and says his opinion is skewed because he is married to Bret's sister. Flair again wants him to say it to his face and Neidhart drops the shades and obliges. Flair calls himself the king of the wild frontier in WCW. Neidhart about blows an artery and challenges Flair to a match. Ric is shocked at the nerve that Jim has to offer this challenge. Flair says he is going to the back to get his gear on. Flair steps back into the ring with his suit and loafers on. He wallops Neidhart with a foreign object and takes out the referee to a big pop from the crowd. Flair starts working over the leg and then locks on the figure four on the ring post. Bret comes out and we get a heated ringside brawl with Falir retreating. Awesome stuff again.
  10. We cut to action of Mongo hitting the spike tombstone piledriver to pick up the win. Neat addition by Tenay saying that because he never got to spike the football in the NFL for scoring a touchdown, he is spiking his opponents in WCW. We come back from break with Jericho going on another diatribe to a chorus of boos. Jericho takes it very seriously being a role model to all of the people. Jericho has proven he can lose with dignity and in a respectable manner. It will never, ever happen again. That no good Rey Mysterio interrupts Jericho. Jericho berates him for doing that. Jericho offers a handshake and then attacks him from behind. The liontamer gets locked on and Rey is tapping like crazy. Juvy's music fires up and he slips on the ropes jumping in to a big laugh from the crowd. Juvy decides to attack Rey with a dropkick in a memoir to his father. Juvy gives Rey a big tombstone and climbs up to the top for the 450. Juvy hits that and wins the match in 2 minutes. (1/2 *)
  11. Flynn takes Goldberg down at the beginning but Bill quickly stunts that and then hooks on some shoot style arm and leg locks that I had forgotten was part of his repertoire. Flynn locks on an armbar and gets slammed down. Goldberg hits the spear and jackhammer and continues his undefeated streak with a big pop from the crowd. It is starting to become apparent that they may be on to something here with Goldberg. (1/2*)
  12. The limo full of NWO pulls up and Hogan wants his belt. Okerlund the instigator strikes again asking where Savage was at. Nash gives the statement that "Savage doesn't want any of me." Dissension within the NWO has started up again apparently.
  13. Sandman looks in shape for him and well groomed so perhaps he took this match serious. Sabu attacks at the onset and Fonzie helps set up the spots for Sabu. Sabu hits a legdrop on chair on top of Sandman's head. Sabu is doing good at going after Sandman and hitting his spots cleanly in the early going. The crowd almost breathes a collective sigh of relief when his first triple jump splash into Sandman in the crowd goes off without a hitch. Again, we get some ho hum brawling throughout the ECW arena. That has seriously become one of my least favorite things in wrestling watching more ECW. They get to the Eagle's Nest area where Sabu sets up a table. Sabu hits a legdrop through a table and Sandman. Sandman fires back and hits Sabu with a slam and elbow drop on the stage. Back at the ringside area, Sandman suplexes a ladder on top of a prone Sabu and then does the ladder tetter-totter spot. Sandman has to muscle sabu up for a weird looking suplex onto two tables set up outside and then does a dangerous leg drop with Sabu's face pressed up against the table in awkward fashion. Sandman then does another nasty spot where Sabu is draped over the ladder that is connected between the ring and guardrail. His face is on top of a table and Sandman does a springboard legdrop from inside the ring to the outside. Sandman climbs the ladder and retrieves the barbed wire but then gets unceremoniously thrown from the ladder to the outside through two tables. Sabu misses a triple jump holding the barbed wire and is neck first against the guardrail. The gore factor is turned up now with the barbed wire in play. Barbed wire and scissors are ingrained into Sandman's face and he bleeds a gusher. Barbed wire and chair are placed on Sandman's face and Sabu hits an Arabian dropkick onto him. Sabu misses a dive and then is chest first into the barbed wire. Sandman finds his trusty cane and Sabu gets plastered with it. Sabus is bleeding from the mouth and Fonzie helps him out to tape up his broken jaw. Sabu is one tough mofo if nothing else. The triple jump moonsault from Sabu is the worst executed spot of the match and it is time to take this one home. Sandman tees Sabu up and cracks Sabu with a big swing on the cane and pins him. Joey's call of calling Sandman the "winner" of the match is a great call. This match featured innovative spots, some straight gore, and good hatred between the two. It did get a little long after Sabu broke his jaw but this feels like the quintessential ECW match to me and still feels fresh and full of gore 16 years later. (****1/4)
  14. I get that Alfonso is trying to be annoying with the whistle but jesus does it drive me nuts. Bam Bam gets a quick flurry and we get a LONG stall session with RVD and Fonzie on the outside. Bam Bam again shows his extreme power advantage and this time goes to the outside after RVD. He throws him over the guardrail and beats on him. RVD sells this like a 3 stooges spot rubbing his head in ridiculous fashion. RVD is then able to headscissor Bam Bam into the rail in a completely contrived spot I just cant buy. RVD beats him with some chairs and then sends Bam Bam over the railing with a side kick. RVD hits a nice running splash and then he climbs to the top and hits a lengthy dive onto Bam Bam on the outside. RVD again doesn't let Bam Bam get into the ring and hits him with some good kicks and a neat clothesline from the apron. Van Dam follows that up with a huge crossbody that got big air. RVD is slowly winning me over with this nutso king of the mountain segment. Bigelow finally gets back and in and RVD pounds away. An awkward moment occurs where Bigelow catches RVD's foot but he hits a sloppy legdrop. RVD has no focus now as he is just giving Bam Bam sloppy strikes and mugging for the camera. Bigelow makes his comeback and catapults RVD into the corner post. A ddt gets a nearfall with Fonzie creeping in the ring. Bigelow misses a somersault senton from the top and both men are down. A chair gets insulted and RVD uses it against Bigelow. Split legged moonsault with the chair is used. Bigelow just hurls the chair at RVD and he takes a powder to the outside. Fonzie gets press slammed on top of RVD. Van Daminator is hit on the referee and Bam Bam again pastes RVD with the chair. Candido makes a run in but he gets hit with a chair and Greetings from Asbury Park. Sunny then runs in to a big pop. Wrong place, wrong time, wrong promotion. Bigelow sets her up for the greetings to a huge pop. Francine wearing a bed sheet and a thong comes in and Bam Bam lifts her up too. Franchise comes in and distracts Bigelow enough to allow RVD to hit a side kick and five star for the win. This match was a mess (* 1/2)
  15. Credible comes out with Jason and Nicole Bass and of course she gets an interesting reaction from the ECW faithful. Jason grabs the mic and announces Nicole as the sexiest woman on earth as they parade down a "you suck dick" chant. Bass and Jason make out to Joey's disdain. Sasuke completely dominates the first 70% of the match. He hits a nice flying tope to the outside but even Sasuke can't escape the trope of taking the grand tour of the ECW arena. Sasuke drags the match down a level back inside the ring with submissions. We then get a little flurry by Credible that Sasuke counteracts with a Space Flying Tiger Drop to the outisde. Jason trips up Sasuke and he wipes out on a dive to the outside. Credible goes after the leg with some good intensity. He does the ring post figure four and hits the knee with a chair. Justin Asshole chant breaks out. Credible wraps the chair over Sasuke's leg and hits it with another chair. Sasuke makes a little comeback but goes up top and misses again. Credible hits the That's Incredible to win the match clean as a sheet in impressive fashion. After the match, Jason and Credible continue to attack and unmask Sasuke until Hamada makes the save. Credible gives him a Thats Incredible for his trouble. They really play up that he has now laid out the two top stars in M-Pro. I understand the desire for Sasuke to show off his stuff but his portion on top of this match was too long and prevented the match as a whole to reach the next level, still Justin was very focused on the leg and was given a big push coming out of this. 16. Oh Lee Marshall. We get footage from the last Nitro of 1997 and the Hogan vs. Sting match after Nitro went off the air. Nick Patrick comes in after Randy Anderson gets wiped out. Sting attacks Patrick and Hogan is able to roll up Sting and get the pinfall with a hand full of tights. AYE. The crowd actually bites on this as a title change and pops huge. Sting makes a comeback and Patrick gets thrown out. Sting beats up Hogan and locks on the Scorpion and Hogan taps out. JJ comes out but so does Bischoff and one day after Sting wins the title they are doing a belt held up angle. Really brutal stuff. Sting gives Bischoff and scorpion death drop as the NWO swarms in. Hart makes the save and goes after the NWO. Multiple members of WCW continue and the ring looks like WW3. This whole thing is a mess and really muddles Sting big coronation from the night before. We cut back to live with an in ring interview with JJ. JJ calls out Hogan and he comes along with Bischoff, Nash, Hall, Vincent and K-Dawg. Sting is also asked to come out along with the belt. Sting's pop was not exactly deafening at all. JJ says they have reviewed the footage and effectively immediately, the title is being held up. Sting is asked by JJ to give give him the championship belt. Sting just throws the belt down at JJ's feet and talks for the first time. "You've got no guts (directed at JJ), and You are a dead man (directed at Hogan)" This was an awful fallout to Starrcade and a huge blunder for WCW.
  17. Bret comes out for a promo with Tenay and states his promo again about how he came up with The best there is saying and the fans truly believe that. Bret is starting to get a smattering of boos in this feud. This leads to Flair coming out and damn if Flair doesn't give another great promo talking about wrestling Brody in singapore and in St. Louis while Bret was peddling away in Canada. This feud of one upmanship has been superbly done so far even if I don't know if it should have been Bret's first feud in WCW. I am really looking forward to their match at Souled Out.
  18. We cut to Juventud reversing a powerbomb attempt into a DDT. Juvy hits the 450 and wins the cruiserweight title. This was a shoddy week for Ultimo.
  19. Hall is bickering with Billy Silverman. Larry Z comes down to distract Hall leading to Traylor hitting his finisher and picking up the victory.
  20. Larry is wearing one of the ugliest golf shirts imaginable. His promo here is to hype up the upcoming Souled Out match vs. Hall. Nothing groundbreaking but a good set up of their past history together and Larry stating that he knows a lot about Hall.
  21. JJ announces that Macho Man is the winner of the first match tonight vs. Chris Adams due to outside interference from Lex Luger. Luger comes out hot and gives one of his better promos of all time. He says that he is sick and tired of the NWO coming out and interfering at will and him, DDP, Sting, and The Giant are not going to stand for it any longer. FInally, someone within WCW seems to be giving the NWO a taste of their own medicine. JJ looks a little foolish here but I can understand his position in the sense that his hands are tied and he can only discipline the individuals he has jurisdiction over. Luger got over with this kind of dull Daytona crowd more than anyone else on the show minus maybe Bret and Flair.
  22. I would be curious to see how many Thunder appearances Hogan made over the years. This starts out as NWO theme music and segues itself into Bischoff's theme and eventually Hendrix. Hogan and Bischoff give a generic promo saying that the tape from Starrcade will show that Hogan did indeed get the 3-count on Sting and is the rightful heavyweight champion. Hogan and Bischoff are still getting some heat and we are only 10 days removed from Starrcade, but it does feel like some luster is lost and Starrcade 97 should have even more been the end game to the main NWO storyline arc.
  23. WCW tries their hand at a second big show once and for all de-emphasizing the importance of WCWSN in the grand scheme of things. The opening is a good bit like Nitro but the set always looks dark and murky to me. Tony tries to tie in the importance of wrestling on TBS over the years which is a nice touch.
  24. This match starts off really hot with a vicious strike exchange and flying forearm from Tanaka. Chairs get involved and Tanaka throws some nasty punches. Gannosuke takes over and he is even more relentless. The powerbomb from the stage through the table looked really brutal. Tanaka is bleeding and Gannosuke breaks a kendo stick and starts targeting the arm. His offense was varied and unique and I was actually hoping it would last longer than it did. Tanaka's first comeback was a little shaky for me because he kept using the injured arm but the damage did not seem as bad to Gannosuke and Tanaka was grimacing in pain. The ending stretch features a lot of high impact moves but also enough time between them to not make it feel like them just blowing through spots. The ending pin by Gannosuke was clever and fit the overall match. This felt in some ways like the FMW template match of wrestling, brawling, and some compelling storytelling mixed in. (***3/4)
  25. Michaels comes out for his typical gloaty promo but I will say at least he is staying on task and addressing Taker directly. The DX casket gets rolled down and Shawn assumes that it is HHH and Chyna playing the same prank on him that he pulled last week. A wheelchair laden HHH and Chyna come out on the stage and Taker emerges from the casket to bring Shawn down into it as the show closes. Good to see HBK get his comeuppance for once.
