I liked this match a good bit. The opening was perfunctory and fine with all the pairings. The rope walk didn't bother me because of how Misawa blocked it. I am still really enjoy watching Akiyama grow and he mixed it up well with Hayabusa here. The end stretch was really impressive with team FMW looking to pull off the big upset and Misawa looking like a true ace. Is it a great match, no but I thought this was a really good affair that showed some depth again in All Japan.

[1997-11-24-Music City Wrestling] Wolfie D vs Flash Flanagan (Ladder)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in November 1997
Jason Jarrett gets way too involved. This match was very meh and disappointing and the announcer drove me nuts. I didn't see any indication from what we saw here that Flash could put together a transitionally smart match. -
[1997-11-Music City Wrestling] Wolfie D vs Trailer Park Trash
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in November 1997
Nothing to the match and something looks very old about this even though it is good to hear Michael St. John. Flanagan attacks early on in the contest and hm and Wolfie brawl to the balcony and Wolfie gets hung in a nasty look scene. -
Short match and Giant does look dreadful and out of it. We get Nash as Sting AGAIN and that is my least favorite thing in WCW in 1997. NWO delivers a big beatdown and both Raw and Nitro felt like misfires on this night which is odd for how hot 1997 has been throughout.

Wrestling New Years Resolutions <<2014 thread - No more resolutions here>>
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in Pro Wrestling
Figured I would bump this halfway through the year to see where I stand. 1. Was able to watch all the Rumbles relevant to that series (1988-2002). Sadly made me sort of hate Royal Rumbles as a whole 2. 2.5 discs left of 1997 footage so I am on a good pace mid year 3. 2 discs left of 1991 footage so I am on a good pace mid year 4. Need a solid deadline to give me a kick in the ass to bust through the lucha set 5. Can't win them all as mine/Parv's recording schedule has been ransacked with various items. Who knows what will happen when Chad jr. arrives. 6. 1998 seems like a good choice 7. This has been successful approach for me in some ways from getting completely burnt out on what I think has been a fairly dreadful run booking wise for WWE 8. My spreadsheet is expanding and I feel confident I will be able to knock out a good top 10 list I am comfortable with at year end. -
This didn't make my Thunder party look that bad by comparison.

[1997-11-24-WCW-Nitro] Larry Zbyszko and Eric Bischoff
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in November 1997
"Members of the NWO may be 4 life, but legends are 4 ever" Great line by Larry. The fliers falling down from the ceiling is a tactic the NWO liked to utilize. Bischoff answers the challenge and we get the final set up to their match upcoming at Starrcade. -
This is utter shit and makes Anvil and Vader look like goofs. How this built to the PPV they had in less than two weeks, I will never know.

Favorite thing happening in WWF right now. Rock feels like the guy of the Nation and they way they built up the difficulties to peak with Austin being revealed was well done. We get the beeper stunt and Rock gets beat up fannie pack and all. Austin and Rock look like stars here.

[1997-11-24-WWF-Raw] DX, 'Bret Hart' and Jim Neidhart
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in November 1997
I couldnt remember much of the context of this promo besides mini Bret coming out but man it was dreadful and honestly wasn't funny. WWF has done a good job editing this over the years to make it seem much more important/funny. Terrible way to sell a PPV and Anvil being involved in this nonsense is embarrassing. -
Where the Big Boys Play #63 - Superbrawl I
soup23 replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Remasters will be coming Savage, for now I would recommend starting at Great American Bash 1988 and going straight through to where we are now. -
Another weird Goldust segment and this is pretty bad stuff that I can't get behind really. Vader comes out to get in his face and gets some alcohol in his eyes as his result and an attack from angel Luna.

[1997-11-24-WWF-Raw] Legion of Doom vs New Age Outlaws
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in November 1997
the NAO have their theme music and are starting to get their theme down but are not named as such yet. Action was not very inspiring and they leave the arena immediately. -
Shawn is heartbroken over what happens and he says that the controversy will be done once and for all. DX is pretty much the DX we know by this point with music and everything.

[1997-11-24-WAR] Genichiro Tenryu vs Yoshiaki Fujiwara
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in November 1997
Two grumpy bastards firing off with each other, sign me up. I really loved Fujiwara smiling after all the damage he inflicted or what was returned to him. His work on the arm was great and fierce. The match felt epic without being overly long. I do agree with Phil that the ending was slightly abrupt but I was glad that this match delivered in November of 1997. -
[1997-11-23-WCW-Worldwide] Dean Malenko vs Norman Smiley
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in November 1997
Norman took a lot of this match and looked good. The finish was abrupt but the 7 minutes of action leading up to that were a treat. The announcing is really dreadful with them barely focusing on the action at all. Good B- style match. -
[1991-12-06-CMLL] El Dandy vs El Satanico (Hair vs Hair)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in December 1991
Agree that it is a notch below last year but still fantastic stuff and a match that felt completely different relying more on wrestling and mind games coming off the final caida of last December's hair match. The finish of this one was fabulous too with Dandy losing his hair and Satanico being able to hang on and show his resourcefulness. I wish every match Dandy wrestled made tape.- 9 replies

I liked this but agree it had a really fun start with them roughhousing Hansen and fighting fire with fire and then it pettered out with some uninspiring control sequences where everything looked inconsequential. I still say Terry Gordy is the one worker that has dropped the most as far as GOAT contenders go with the more stuff I watch from him.

[1991-12-03-WWF-This Tuesday In Texas] The Undertaker vs Hulk Hogan
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in December 1991
Feels weird seeing Taker come out with the belt. Much like the MSG Flair match, I really enjoyed Hulk's house of fire and think a case can be made that 1991 was one of his more solid in ring years. Crowd is also really hot and solidly behind Hogan which is nice to hear this late into his WWF run. The rules of the match are a little wonky as they were outside for a long time and the choking was to an absurd level at times. Hulk does get pretty desperate at the end. Flair comes out and Monsoon is outraged but Tunney cuts him off as Hulk is doing his routine. Hogan spots Flair and gets some revenge with a chair shot but Flair falls on Tunney. Hogan with a forearm shot and chop which looked odd in the ending routine. Taker actually interrupts this sequence making him look strong. Flair is doing fine after the chair shot but TUnney is out. Flair grabs the chair now but Hogan sends Taker face first into it. Holy shit, Taker hits a punch after the big boot. He is looking strong here. The urn hits Taker and Hulk being a dick throws it in Taker's eyes and rolls him up to regain the belt. In a brilliant move, Flair pulled TUnney up so he got a glimpse of all of this. Man, underrated booking on this show with both top feuds feeling strong at the moment.- 15 replies

Always like reading your lists Vinnie and comparing them to mine. Keep them up.

Jake was on another level on this show. My wife sometimes will be in the same vicinity as I am watching and never pays much attention but she was entranced by Jake's performance here and thought he was the creepiness man alive. Savage was super as a babyface performer and overall this is one of the best things WWF has ever produced. Brilliant all around.

[1991-12-02-WWF-Corpus Christi, TX] Ric Flair vs Shawn Michaels
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in December 1991
This match was more competitive and entertaining than I had remembered. I thought Flair did a good job of letting Michaels do his highflying stuff and grounding him when needed. Lord Al playing quasi heel on commentary is always an interesting ride. Not a great match, but certainly historic and fun to watch.- 11 replies

Slap on a better finish and I have no problem with this being your WM 8 main event as the crowd was hot and the opening Hogan house of fire segment was great but made even better with Flair being resourceful. I found it odd they wedged in this match at MSG between the two PPV's. Finish is of course a little annoying but seeing Flair get a visual pin was cool. Between this match, the 1994 BATB match, and the 1999 series that I always liked more than most, Flair vs. Hogan feels like kind of an underated feud to me.

Wow, what a misfire this was coming off the great Nitro with NWO looking hugely strong. The battle vs. WCW was good stuff and Savage was sweating like crazy. I even popped for the Hogan surprise as they could say it was insurance in case he lost to Sting for a rematch. Then things go really off the rails when Nash comes out as Sting AGAIN and the announcers have to act incredibly stupid when nothing adds up. Throughout all of this, Hall wins the match and Hogan and the Outsiders celebrate by beating up DDP. Big thud to the end of the PPV.
