Between the Sheets #96 (May 17-23, 1999)
soup23 replied to KrisZ's topic in Publications and Podcasts
The Owen discussion was some of the best BTS stuff in the history of the show. -
Agree this is a waste of money but damn if I wasn't entertained by it and Tony gives a hell of a performance. One of the more memorable PPV openings of the 90's.

[1993-10-23-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Cactus Jack
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in October 1993
Amazing promo by Foley really setting the stage for tonight. It was creepy and demonic and hit the right tones. He spins the wheel and I guess Texas Death Match isn't as bad as Coal Minor Glove but still not great.- 6 replies

[1993-10-23-WCW-Saturday Night] Nasty Boys vs Marcus Bagwell & 2 Cold Scorpio
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in October 1993
Not inspiring action to me and I continue to think 2 Cold is pretty overrated at times in these parts. Teddy Long is their new manager and they went for a shock value title change but everything felt flat.- 7 replies

An old school Hardess bag and logo and back when they served Fried Chicken instead of burgers and burritos. Tammy is hilarious in this segment like usual and these continue to be a treat to watch.

[1993-10-23-SMW-TV] Interview: Brian Lee & Tammy Fytch & Ron Wright
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in October 1993
Oh man did I love this. Lee and Tammy are such assholes clowning behind Wright's back and it was natural for DWB to have some compassion because of what he thinks about Wright. This in turn creates a new babyface in the promotion. Really well done stuff.- 7 replies

[1996-10-11-WAR-Osaka Crush Night] Ultimo Dragon vs Great Sasuke
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in October 1996
Really enjoyed this match more than I thought I would and the crowd certainly helped. That being said, the progression was also well done from engaging feeling out process to a compelling and breakneck final stretch that really popped the crowd into a frenzy. Both of these guys have had a strong 1996 and Ultimo was really polished here. **** -
[1996-10-11-WAR-Osaka Crush Night] Rey Misterio Jr vs Psicosis
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in October 1996
Good touring style match for these two. Not everything hit with perfection but the work was ambitious and it kept me entertained throughout the duration. Psicosis is able to use his size advantage well throughout this match and Rey was having to duck and move and hit some great counters to even the odds. He picks up the upset victory that feels well earned. ***1/4- 10 replies

One of my favorite matches of all time and a desert island match for me. Like a lot of people, this along with J Cup and some sort of 90's All Japan were my first puro purchases and this immediately blew me away. Even twenty years later and after 10 viewings, it still entertains me just the same. I don't know if Delphin, Taka, Togo or Yakushiji is my favorite in this but all are fantastic and this is 10 guys in a big building going out there and killing it without coming up for air. A wonderful match. ****3/4

Great angle and I loved the usage of Liz. Hogan really feels deplorable here just beating up Savage as Bischoff continues to scoff at the horror on commentary. The chalk outline was a nice touch. The monster truck coming out was a bit goofy but hey it shows just how big Hogan's ego is.

The action didn't look very good so the Outsiders clowning around was a welcome change to Nitro. This was a good way to keep up the anything can happen vibe without that much actually happening.

I agree that when they said it had been fifteen months but that was only the beginning of the story, I laughed out loud as who could possibly care. Did Double J commit the crime of the century. I think this made Road Dogg look like a weenie and a crybaby that can't let something go.

I enjoy the hype for this with Taker preparing the grave site for Mankind. Taker always does a good job in making these hokey vignettes seem personal.

[1996-10-06-AJW-Ultra Whirlwind] Manami Toyota vs Aja Kong
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in October 1996
I dug this a good bit. If you are someone praising something like KUSHIDA vs Hiromu from the Tokyo Dome in 2017, that match had just as much slop as this. Toyota is pretty reckless but the theme of the match was her proving her toughness to Aja and Aja underestimating her so Toyota acting like a spastic child that blows some stuff to prove they are tougher than they think they are actually works. Some of the spots on the neck were just incredibly brutal like the aforementioned table spot. The finale was really well done with AJa going for her spinning back fist and getting trapped for a brutal capture back suplex for the pin. Aja looks like she had her foot on the rope too as an out. ***3/4 -
I would be interested in Loss revisiting this as while it certainly isn't top of the line BattlARTS, I thought it was fine as a spot show style match. Yuki and Ikeda going after each other is always entertaining and this was more grapple heavy stuff between them. Finish was a little anticlimatic but it put over Ikeda's kicks well and the shot was brutal. ***

[1993-10-23-AJPW-October Giant Series] Toshiaki Kawada vs Kenta Kobashi
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in October 1993
10/23 was a hell of a day for great wrestling. This has an odd structure on the surface as these guys have been going at it in the build up so the tentative start was a surprise. I did see the opening as a way of each other sizing the other one up and not wanting to make that first critical mistake. The strikes throughout this match were really impressive. Just tons of chops and kicks to arms and other areas that looked unique and varied. The ending run is also insanely dramatic and really plays a role in the hierarchy for AJ moving forward in the decade. Kawada puts Kobashi away with the stretch plum pin which made perfect sense given the strategy of the sleeper throughout the match. Wonderful stuff and only behind 6/98 in their singles matches together IMO. ****1/2- 13 replies

I love RINGS. Two guys whose name I can't pronounce and look like they should be working at my dad's engineering plant go in there and stretch the ever loving shit out of each other. I was afraid to walk after watching this match based on the torture on the legs that each guy put the other through. The finish was excellent as it showed someone completely compromised for the first time throughout and forced the tap out. I know this match at almost 20 minutes of straight grappling isn't for everyone but in the right setting this really connected for me. ****

This has to be one of the best sub 10 minutes matches I have ever seen. Han is just a master and him rag dolling Naruse around putting him in intricate arm bars and leg locks was masterful. Naruse felt like a student that is ahead of the rest of his class in the dojo and then the trainer gets into the ring and puts him into his place real quick. This match wasn't about who was going to win or lose but how long Naruse would survive. I loved every second of it and it made me contemplate if I had Han too low on my GWE list. ****1/4

Awesome angle. Savage feels energized and Crush actually has some logical points that he is able to mouth in between his brahs. Bobby was the right person to lead this segment and helped direct traffic while Fuji just stood there with the Japanese flag. The build up to the turn was really well done and milked to the extreme. Crush looks vicious on the beatdown and the blood forming in Savage's mouth was a nice tough. Yokozuna adding to the attack proves he is the biggest deal in WWF at this time and adds emphasis to the angle overall too. Tremendous.

[1993-10-16-WCW-Saturday Night] Vader vs Ricky Steamboat (Human Cage)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in October 1993
Never thought I would like a match this much more than Marty but here we are. Steamboat's offense isn't going to match Vader but I didn't think it looked too bad here all things considered and I liked him doing stuff like the body weight onto Vader's stomach and the big splashes to wind the big man. Vader's stiffness was also great here and he had a willing partner to sell in Steamer. The lumberjack stip wasn't used well at all here and really was a prop that set up the finish. Vicious is set up well in the finish and I guess we were still heading towards Vader vs Sid at this point. Pretty crap finish and while this wasn't a classic, I thought it was still very good. ***1/2- 10 replies

Fifi coming out with Flair feels good knowing their real life 2017 relationship status. This was paint by numbers Flair and he is actually getting outperformed by Rude in the build to this match. I wonder if Flair didn't have that high level of respect for Rude as a worker as he seems preoccupied with other stuff at the moment.
