El-P
Thanks for posting these here Ray. I didn't vote but did watch everything I could from 92 to 96. Glad the Four Way and Douglas vs Scorpio made it very high. I love Scorpio and Douglas in 96, just two fantastic guys. I'm really not that high on any of the Eddie vs Dean matches, which seemed quite boring to me, kinda like the Benoit vs Dean match from Bash at the Beach 96. Technical clinic but devoid of emotion mostly devoid of any psychology. I was much more interested in Sandman's matches from the same timeframe than any of theses "classics". The Rey matches did age quite well to me though, especially the Juvy ones. I'm amazed RVD vs Doug Furnas made the top 10. I'm amazed Benoit vs Al Snow is still ranked at 20. I thought this would be exposed by now. Too much "extreme lucha" stuff ranked too high for my tastes. Anyway, looking back at ECW was mostly quite fun (although I did stop just at the peak years) and surprisingly refreshing to me.
Death From Above
Interesting poll. Too bad only 10 people voted but still a good effort for all concerned. ECW is a funny case in that I don't really think it produced many matches you'd point to as "classics" that have held up the way the top matches in some other companies do, but there are a lot of matches on the tier below that one that are "a good amount of fun" if you're into the style being worked. Sandman is a guy that also fall into that same category - not a lot of super high end work, but consistently a guy that understood his audience and worked one of the most interesting matches on most shows. I haven't watched ECW in a while but that was always my impression, it wasn't as bad as it became "cool" to claim it was for a while and there was some fun to be had with it all, but there was a lack of genuine top level material. I think it's a company I'd enjoy more in a "full retrospective" sense that spent extra time on angles and promos as opposed to just straight matches. On the subject of Sandman I think a strictly matches comp without background material hurts one of my favourite matches of his, where he gets caned in the eye, Raven can't wrestle with a broken foot, so Stevie Richards volunteers to defend the ECW belt for Raven and we get Sandman vs Stevie. Giant clusterfuck of a match with a ton of run ins that is a lot more fun if you get to see all that setup, but it's just about as prime an example of making that work as anything. Bonkers crowd heat too. I would watch it again personally before a lot of stuff that collected votes, but I'm just some guy on the interwebz with an opinion. :-) I've never seen the Cactus Jack/Jericho match but that sounds.... interesting. The Terry Funk/Tommy Rich match is a ton of fun. The pop for Raven/Gordy is one of my favourite ECW moments ever. Crowd just lost their shit. I became very appreciative of the Sandman's work. His entrance in 1995 with Woman is my favourite wrestling entrance ever. Just perfect in term of visual, music, pace, contrast between his look and Nancy's...
smkelly
Similar to Dundee-Lawler Loser Leaves Town in Memphis, I don't get the love for Douglas-Scorpio. I ranked it 28th, but apparently, the match is like two and half times better than Austin/Hart I Quit. Someone please explain the love to me, and while you're at it, explain the love for the two Memphis matches too
Loss
My thought with ECW has always been that matches appearing on comps typically look awful, but watching full shows was usually a fun experience. In today's comp culture, ECW isn't going to hold up well, but if you watch a full ECW card without fast forwarding anything from, say, 1995, it seems much better than it is because of the whole outweighed the sum of the parts. Ditch
Well said. Like, ECW doesn't match up with ROH even in the slightest if you did a best 20 matches, but a regular ECW show was often far more watchable than an average ROH show where everything is 15 minutes plus and the styles are so similar. Cox
As a direct result of this thread, I watched the Funk/Rich match pretty much because I saw this thread and thought "Wow, Tommy Rich wrestled Terry Funk in ECW? Awesome!" Match delivered, it's too bad Tommy Rich didn't wrestle much after that, I'd have liked to have seen Rich/Dreamer, Rich/Sandman, even something goofy like Rich/New Jack.
