Loss
They really stress on commentary how big of a match this is for HHH and how we’re really going to see what he’s made of. This is a very good brawl with Austin taking a few bumps on the floor that a guy with a bad back making millions definitely shouldn’t be doing. Nothing mind blowing here, but good intensity and a strong TV main event that’s really packaged as HHH’s coming out party. Interesting finish with Undertaker’s “symbol” coming from the ceiling and then him coming to the ring to attack Austin, where the heels end up trying to place Austin on the symbol, only for Austin to turn the side and end up hanging Undertaker. This match is really made better by Jim Ross’s fantastic commentary. This may be one of his best calls of all time, actually - shockingly great. tim
Alright match. Definitely felt like a big deal for Triple H, the short trunks really are a much better look for him.
Tim Evans
The most entertaining part of this was seeing the security try to push back the fans when the wrestlers went into the crowd. Those fans were rabid. Great visual of Taker hanging off the symbol. Not the best thing to see since what happened 6 days later.
soup23
I am not a HHH fan but his escalation up the card has been fun to follow again in retrospect knowing the end game. I never thought these two crafted a classic match together including the famed NWO 2001 match that we analyzed well on the top 100 PTBN Roundtable. However, this match had some of the brawling aspects of that match which were the best parts. As a result, we had a good match here where again HHH didn't embarass himself hanging with the top guy. I think objectively you can see why he was given a chance in the upper card as he hasn't fell on his face yet in what we have seen. The finish with Taker hanging on the symbol provided a cool visual heading into the PPV but kind of showed how stunt style wrestling has become in 1999. So far a beer truck has been driven, monster truck, Bossman hung, Austin thrown off a bridge, and a unholy wedding. Taker repelling on a freaky symbol seems tame in comparison and we aren't five months into the year yet. There wasn't much of anywhere to go. ***
PeteF3
The heat machine is out for part of this, but this is really one of the better WWF TV matches of the year. Some really good out-of-the-ring brawling and some great punches, even as some of this is Austin-and-HHH-by-numbers. HHH had had a string of disappointing performances since SummerSlam when put into "good match" situations, and he got himself back on track here...those of us who decry 2001-02, maybe Austin in May of '99 is really the guy to blame. Post-match is what it is.
