Cross Arm Breaker - 2015 Match Blog

I redesigned my blog (www.crossarmbreaker.com) both in terms of layout and content for the new year. Trying to learn from some the self-induced mistakes made when I attempted a 2014 match blog and have therefore rolled out. The site primarily functions as a daily 2015 match review blog at the moment.

In short, the format is a post for each day of the year that will go up on or around that particular date. I am listing the matches from that day that should be available and that I intend to watch. Red are unwatched/un-reviewed matches. Green are matches I’ve watched and review. The blog reviews will be short, off-the-cuff thoughts. You can search in a few ways: browse; use the search bar for key words; use the promotion tags to browse by promotion; and use the monthly index (linked to on the sidebar) that lists all reviewed matches & will be updated periodically. I am planning on doing longer reviews to be put out together in a compilation (“Monthly Match Book”) at month’s end. These reviews will be for any match I have more to say about (ie. which generally, but not always, means my favorites from the month) along with some other stuff. Also will be some video content up from time to time surrounding matches from the current month.

Its put fun putting this this together and keeping up on everything far so I hope others will find some value/entertainment out of it. Look for the January Match Book in early February. Any feedback about the site is appreciated! Also, please feel free to comment on any matches either here or on the specific blog post.

(Figured this folder was the correct one for this topic but if not, please move).

The match guide is an awesome read and receives my highest recommendation. I enjoy the fact that it isn't just the top hyped matches of the month and Paul works hard to give historical context and dig into the mechanics of the match. Reading twelve of these this year will be a treat.

Cookes rule! Actually, I have no idea - are Tim and Paul brothers? I've only known Tim's thoughts/work, but Paul I'd read without knowing his name until now. This is soooo awesome, and I'm just so glad people are doing these things regularly now. Wrestling analysis is really either in a golden age, or on the road to getting there, and this is part of that movement. Very cool, guys. Thank you.

Thanks for the feedback. We went in to the January issue with the idea of not just covering the best but also not harping on just the negative. It also depends on the depth of the matches themselves. I would love to travel back in time (for numerous reasons) but I think it would be awesome to do one of these in real time for a particularly great month in wrestling history - say January 1990 or December 1996.

Ha, we are indeed brothers. Paul has always liked wrestling as much as me but it wasn't until Punk/Cena at Money in the Bank that he really dove head first back into watching full time and by that time my interest was waning severely, though I still stayed in tune by watching stuff that is still being unearthed (old Lucha, WOS, etc). He was one of the many who contributed to the 2.5-3.0 Nitro (and lesser Thunder rating) rating until March 26, 2001 and we filled the WCW void with ROH DVD's (and 15+ live shows from Sept 2002-August 2006) and more historical matches.

Very glad to hear feedback about this. We are planning to continue to grow this slowly and steadily. Next month, the Match Guide will be available for all e-reader devices and along with the already excellent content, the hope is that we continue to expand and refine the look to make it as nice as possible.

Love to hear it, Tim. Any ballpark ETA on The February Matchbook. Seriously, if Paul just puts out what he did last month (but for Feb) as a PDF I'll be over the moon, but any tweaks that make the creators happy is fine by me. Very much appreciated. And interesting to hear about the ROH stuff. Not sure what you may or may not have picked up about me here from sparse posts (but many guest appearances on podcasts), but I was a big ROH guy myself during the Sapolsky era. You guys Northeasterners?

I'm not getting an email... is it just me? Tried several times now.

Sorry, was out of town and am just seeing this. There is something funky going on with the emails. You can use the direct link to download it after you make the "purchase". I am working on fixing the email issue. Sorry about that.

As a timely tie-in with the NCAA basketball tournament, one theme of this month's Match Guide will be pro wrestling tournaments. I am going to take a look at 3 or 4 tournaments going on this March in a couple of different ways. As sort of a lead in to that, I published a retrospective on Super J-Cup 3rd Stage (promoted by M-Pro in 2000), This was something that I wrote a few months ago and now seemed like the idea time to put it up. That tournament largely lives in the shadow of the 1994 and (to a lesser extent) 1995 tournaments, so I thought it would be worthwhile to take a look at 15 years later and see if its "also-ran" reputation is deserved. I think it turned out pretty well so let me know what you think (about the article and the tournament):

April Match Guide is up here: http://www.crossarmbreaker.com/2015-match-guides/april-2015-match-guide/

In this month’s issue:

  • TAKA continues his strong 2015 in K-DOJO with another excellent, short singles match;
  • Virus and Avisman tear it up on the mat in Coacalco;
  • The current trio of New Japan young lions team for the first time – who came out looking the best?;
  • A 30-minute match in All-Japan and a near 30-minute match in Dragon Gate each produce mixed results;
  • Can Kota Ibushi and HARASHIMA top their very good February with their April sequel?;
  • Plus, in addition to the full length reviews, this month’s issue includes quick hit looks at more than two dozen additional matches!
