[2000-02-05-MPPW-TV] Tracy Smothers vs Scotty Sabre

Cory says enough with the talk, lets get to some wrestling. That of course leads right into a Tracy Smothers promo. I love Smothers character around this time as he has been a rambling man in 2000. Tracy calls the locker room a bunch of fairy pansies. Scotty Sabre comes out and Tracy says he wants Goldberg or The Rock. Tracy tricks Sabre and then sucker punches him. Brilliant. Sabre gets caught going for a tope and takes a nasty spill onto the apron. Tracy being the professional, beats on him quickly to cover up for the awful botch. Tracy’s dancing and juking gets laughs from the crowd. Referee gets wiped out on a slam and Sabre gets a visual pin. Seven interferes on Smothers’ behalf and Tracy pulls the tights for good measure to pick up the win. Tracy says he didn’t need any help. Still loving Tracy throughout 2000. **

Smothers cuts a typically great heel promo before the match to get the studio crowd worked up in a frenzy. Sadly, they lose most of that when the match starts because Scotty Sabre is awful and messes up almost everything he tries, even super basic stuff, and the crowd quickly gets tired of him. That leaves Tracy Smothers to wrestle himself, and Sabre is so bad that he literally seems untrained, so the fact they made it through this without anyone breaking their neck I'd consider a huge success. What a mess.

The Smothers promo here is so great, especially when Scotty Sabre comes out and Tracy is like "Whose this? I want Goldberg." The match however is a mess as Sabre is REALLY bad. So bad that he even forces Smothers to repeat a spot because Sabre can't even execute a simple sunset flip spot when Smothers is already sitting on him. I have no idea why they felt the need to do that lame ref bump leading to interference finish to protect a guy like Scotty Sabre. At least this had a great Tracy Smothers promo at the start of it.

This was a failure of a match. Sabre badly messes up jumping over the rope and struggles in the hook the arms of the posing wrestler spot. The overrated Smothers repeats the spot instead of moving on. Who knows why there needed to be a run-in to help beat an opponent as weak looking as Sabre. Nobody came out of this looking good.

God bless Tracy smothers for trying to get something out of the shit sandwich that was named Scotty Sabre. Holy crap Scotty looked bad. I can kinda understand the botched dive because that ring didn't look safe and it's easy to lose footing but that pinning spot. Poor Tracy had to look dumb by doing it again. Of course, this needed a ref bump. Just bad all around.

Tracey is out and says his opponent today, Wolfie D, hasn’t showed up because he knew ‘sell out’ Smothers would dust him off like yesterday’s newspaper. He draws money, he is ratings, he is a thug! He says his T-H-U-G catchphrase and that he spells pain F-I-S-T! He calls Power Pro a ‘Mickey Mouse’ operation and says that there is nothing but a bunch of fairies and pansies in that dressing room, and if anyone’s got the guts ‘get out here’. Scotty Sabre walks out and Smothers questions who he is and that he wants Goldberg, Steve Austin or The Rock! Sabre says that he works for this company and he’s not a fairy. Smothers says ‘Hey, there’s Wolfie D over there man’, and as Sabre turns around to look, Tracey blindsides him.

Smothers whips Sabre into the ropes, he ducks two clothesline attempts and hits a poor crossbody for a two. A lazy looking back heel kick from Tracey, Sabre then reverses and Irish whip and catches Smothers with a side slam. Tracey rolls out the ring and Sabre with a baseball slide. He goes to dive over the top rope onto him, but mistimes his dive and comes up short, crash landing on the apron. Smothers blocks a sunset flip and then sits on Sabre whilst flexing his biceps. Sabre was supposed to hook his arms with his legs but he botched that, so they repeat the exact same spot. This time Sabre manages it and reverses the pin for a two of this own. Sabre with an enziguiri and a ropey superkick. Michinoku Driver and Smothers accidentally takes out referee Robert Brisco with his legs. There is no official to count the fall and Seven heads out from the back to attack Sabre. Chokeslam at the second attempt, Tracey rolls over to make the pin, Seven gets out of there and the ref comes around to count the fall.

This was perfectly fine up until Sabre missed that dive to the floor and then it went to pot. Why did they repeat that pin reversal spot? It just makes the match look pre-planned and that they had laid something out which they had to stick to. Only the second month of the year in Memphis and I’m already getting fed up of the ref bumps and outside interference. Like Tracey really needed help to beat Scotty Sabre? Pretty sure that Sabre was a WWF developmental guy who also briefly shows up towards the end of WCW. Third duffer in a row from Smothers who’s promos continue to be his highlight.
