Smoky Mountain Power Hour

Saturday 18th May 1985

Knoxville Civic Ballroom, Knoxville, TN

Taped in front of a live studio audience at the Knoxville Civic Ballroom, Knoxville, TN

Hosted by Charlie Platt and David Crockett

Smoky Mountain Heavyweight Champion - Gama Singh

Smoky Mountain Tag Team Champions - Don Kernodle & Boomer Lynch

Charlie Platt and David Crockett welcome the fans to Smoky Mountain Wrestling Power Hour. Charlie Platt recaps this past Mondays results, practically focusing on the Ken Lucas Ron Starr match that ended the 5-match series where Ken Lucas was crowned new number one contender for the Smoky Mountain Heavyweight title. David Crockett invites Ken Lucas out to the announcers table, Lucas tells Crockett and Platt it’s great to be in line for a title match and he fully intends on taking the title and restoring it to an American who loves his country. Platt and Crockett both congratulate Lucas on winning the 5-match series with Ron Starr, Ken Lucas says he wants to put over how much of a tough competitor Ron Starr is, and although he doesn’t agree with some of Starr tactics, he earned his respect. Lucas makes his way to the ring for our opening contest, his opponent this week is youngster Jimmy Del Ray. The match goes for about 5 minutes and Del Ray puts in a good showing but the veteran Lucas is just too experienced and locks in the sleeper hold for the win.

=== Commercial ===

Following the commercial we have Tommy Wright, Pat Rose and Steve Gatorwolf in the ring, when out comes the team of Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler and The Memphis Vice, Jerry Bryant and Lou Winston. The match gets underway, the team of Wright, Rose and Gatorwolf are no match for the Memphis natives, the end comes when Lou Winston hits a massive powerslam on Gatorwolf and covers him for the 3 count. Before Lawler, Bryant and Winston can celebrate the Infernos come charging out to the ring and attack the winners, a 6-man brawl breaks out. The locker room empties to split the 6 men up. At this point Les Thatcher the Smoky Mountain Match Maker comes to the ring, he says he’s fed up with this, so this Monday we are going to have 6-man losing team must leave Smoky Mountain Wrestling match, but it’s not going to go all around the arena, in going to be inside a 20-foot-high steel cage.

=== Run down of this week’s action coming to Smoky Mountain area ===

We return with The Heartbreakers, ‘Sexy’ Steven Dunn and ‘Toy Boy’ Tony Falk standing with David Crockett and Charlie Platt, Falk says it seems to be a lot of new teams entering the area and taking the Heartbreakers spot, so they spoke to Les Thatcher and if they can win there match this week they will be in line for tag team title match in the future, Platt wishes them good luck as they make their way to the ring. Their opponents this week are The Rich Cousins, Johnny and Davey. The match gets underway and before The Heartbreakers could find their feet, the Rich hit stereo thesz press’ to them and cover them for the 3 count, the match is over in a matter of seconds. Both Falk and Dunn are shocked by this, they argue with the referee about it being a fast count, but referee Paul Morton sends them away. The Rich’s join Crockett and Platt when Ron Wright comes out with the Mongolian Stomper, Ron Wright says his Orient Express aren’t here today, Johnny jumps in and says that’s lucky because after this past week him and his cousin want revenge.

=== Commercial ===

We’re back with the Rock N Roll Rpm’s Mike Davis and Tommy Lane with Charlie Platt and David Crockett. Lane and Davis put over the fact that they are the best Rock N Roll team in the world and they are here to take the name from Robert Gibson and Ricky Morton. In ring waiting on the RPM’s are the team of Josh Stroud and Larry Hamilton. The RPMs don’t even wait for the bell and attack Stroud and Hamilton from the off, the match goes for 6 minutes with Davis and Lane in control for the entire match almost, the end comes when Lane and Davis tense a double dropkick to mock the Rock N Roll Express, but instead just hit a double clothesline and Lane covers Stroud for the victory. Following the bell the RPM’s continue their beat down of Hamilton and Stroud, until Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson run out to the ring and chase off the RPM’s.

=== Run down of this week’s action coming to Smoky Mountain area ===

Following the break, we have the ring decorated with several Pakistan flags around the ring with Gama Singh standing in the middle, dressed in a smart suit and his title over his shoulder. Gama says at this time he’d like to bring out the new Smoky Mountain Tag Team champions, Boomer Lynch and Don Kernodle. Lynch and Kernodle come out arguing as Lynch is pointing the reluctant Kernodle to get into the ring. Gama praises both men in front of him, he jokes that Kernodle could at least smile considering he just won the tag titles and reminds him that he is in the most dominate stable in wrestling. At this point, Brian Adias and Ricky Vaughan come to the announcers table, Vaughan tells Gama that he knows he got involved and that’s the only reason Kernodle and Lynch won the titles. Kernodle looks at Gama and questions this, Gama plays it down. Adias then jumps in and says because of this, they have been granted a tag team title match this week, and if Gama Singh gets involved then he will be fired from Smoky Mountain Wrestling. Gama trying to not looked phased by this, as Kernodle continues to question whether he got involved last week in the tag title match as we go off the air.

Boon, you've come a long way from Don Muraco tombstoning midgets, my friend. lol

Very fun roster. Good creativity on how you're utilizing everyone and the TV is well organized/has great flow. A good read!

Tombstoning midgets was a little advance for 1983 Portland in hindsight...

Knoxville Civic Ballroom, Knoxville, TN

Taped in front of a live studio audience at the Knoxville Civic Ballroom, Knoxville, TN

Hosted by Charlie Platt and David Crockett

Smoky Mountain Heavyweight Champion - Gama Singh

Smoky Mountain Tag Team Champions - Ricky Vaughan & Don Kernodle

The opening credits roll, and is followed by Charlie Platt and David Crockett being joined by Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler, Lawler says he thought all his troubles were behind him when he and the Memphis Vice defeated the Infernos, only for Hugo Savinovich and Abdullah The Butcher to ruin the moment for him. He explains that the Memphis Vice have moved on and this is a battle for himself. From the other side of the studio, Hugo Savinovich walks out smoking a cigar, Savinovich says that he was contacted by a person who would like to remind anonymous, and that person ask if they could relive Smoky Mountain Wrestling of ‘The King’. Lawler asks who this coward is who would send a Butcher after him, Savinovich butts in and says thats the least of his worries, because this Monday his Butcher will collect the bounty on his head, Hugo Savinovich then just strolls off puffing on his cigar. Lawler tells Platt and Crockett he’s going to deal with Abdullah and Savinovich this Monday night in Knoxville.

=== Commercial ===

After a short break, we are joined by a new trio here in Smoky Mountain Wrestling, the Heartbreakers, ‘Toy Boy’ Tony Falk, ‘Sexy’ Steven Dunn and new to the group, ‘Gigolo’ Jimmy Del Ray. Falk says it didn’t go quite to plan last week, and that’s why they needed to shake it up a little and they have added the Gigolo to the group, so this week, Steven Dunn and Jimmy Del Ray will have their chance to win a tag team title match if they can beat their mystery opponents Les Thatcher has sorted for them. Dunn and Del Ray make their way to the ring as Tony Falk joins Platt and Crockett for commentary, Charlie Platt introduces the new team to the area, The Latin Lovers, Javier Cruz and Vinnie Valentino. The Lovers make their way out to the ring, getting kisses and hugs from the young ladies in the crowd, as they slide into the ring, Dunn and Del Ray jump the Latin Lovers and the bell rings. Del Ray is a very athletic lightweight wrestler who puts in an impressive performance but it isn’t enough for his team, when the Lovers pick up the win at 7 minutes when Javier Cruz lifts Steven Dunn into a spinebuster position when Valentino comes of the ropes with a running clothesline, and covers him for the 3 count. As soon as the bell rings Tony Falk jumps into the ring and we have a 3 on 2 beat down, the new trio of The Heartbreakers make their to the back following the beat down.

We return with David Crockett standing at a table with a new championship belt on it, ladies and gentlemen, one of the key focuses of the NWA and Smoky Mountain Wrestling is to bring you the best professional wrestling across all divisions of wrestling and with that being said the National Wrestling Alliance and Smoky Mountain Wrestling would like to announce a 12 man round robin tournament for the new NWA International Junior Heavyweight Title. This division will be limited to wrestlers under the 220-pound mark. As you can see from the graphic on the screen, it will be a round robin tournament, 12 men split into 2 groups, with the top two of each group moving into a playoff, and the winners facing off for the title. For every win a wrestler will receive 2 points and for a draw you receive 1 point, each match will have a 15-minute time limit. We are now shown another graphic with the names of Block A and Block B.

Block A

  • ‘Gigolo’ Jimmy Del Ray – USA
  • Marty Jones – United Kingdom – Representing Dale Martin Promotions
  • Owen Hart – Canada – Representing Jim Crockett Promotions
  • Pat Rose – USA
  • Fishman – Mexico – Representing Universal Wrestling Association
  • Ken Timbs - USA

Block B

  • Tim Horner – USA
  • Dean Malenko – USA – Representing Jim Crockett Promotions
  • 2 Cold Scorpio – USA
  • Tony Falk – USA
  • David Taylor – United Kingdom – Representing Joint Promotions
  • Enrique Vera – Mexico – Representing Universal Wrestling Association

These block matches will begin within a few weeks, so keep your eyes peeled for dates in your local town. But for today we will have a junior’s showcase match. As two teams make their way to the ring, on one side we have Tim Horner, Marty Jones, 2 Cold Scorpio and Ken Timbs facing off with Fishman, David Taylor, Enrique Vera and Pat Rose. The match sees a lot of fast paced action with a mixture of high flying and technical wrestling, the end comes when there is some miscommunication between David Taylor and Pat Rose and Taylor strikes Rose with a stiff right hand and walks off allowing Tim Horner to roll Pat Rose up for the win at 9 minutes. Crockett comments on how excited he is too see the tournament unfold.

=== Commercial ===

Following the commercial we have Josh Stroud and Larry Hamilton facing off with The Rock N Roll RPMs, Mike Davis and Tommy Lane, the match goes for about 6 minutes, with Lane and Davis clearly outclassing the younger team of Stroud and Hamilton, and get the win following a double drop kick. Clearly mocking the Rock N Roll Express following the bell, Lane and Davis continue their beat down of the helpless Hamilton and Stroud, until Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson run out and chase off the RPMs. Morton and Gibson join Platt and Crockett, they tell the announcers that they have just signed a contract for a Best of 7 Series with the RPMs where there will be 2 singles matches and the rest will be tag matches and the winner of the series will be granted a Tag Team Title match and the loser will not receive any title matches in wrestling for 6 months and it starts this Monday in Knoxville.

=== Commercial ===

Before today’s main event, Smoky Mountain Heavyweight Champion Gama Singh and the former Tag Team Champions Don Kernodle and Boomer Lynch come to the announcer’s desk, Gama says that he won’t stand for dissention within his stable, so he’s willing to overlook this past Mondays tension and move onto this Monday with them winning back the tag team titles. Charlie Platt asks Gama his thoughts around his win this past Monday against Ken Lucas? Gama says that Ken Lucas cheated and there isn’t anything else to add, Platt says if Lucas can get the win in today’s main event then he will receive another heavyweight title match, Gama just drops in and says, well that won’t be happening. Today’s main event will see Don Kernodle facing off with Ken Lucas. Lucas makes his way to the ring, he points at Gama and his title and says he coming for it on Monday. As the bell rings, Gama and Boomer Lynch gather around the ring, only for the new Tag Team champions Brian Adias and Ricky Vaughan come out to make sure Singh and Lynch don’t get involved. The match goes for about 12 minutes when Lucas slaps on a Sleeper Hold, Kernodle looks like he’s going down when Gama Singh and Boomer Lynch jump up on the apron only for Ricky Vaughan and Brian Adias pull them off to make sure they don’t get involved, Kernodle passes out and the referee calls for the bell, Ken Lucas gets another shot at Gama Singh this Monday night. Lucas celebrates with Ricky Vaughan and Brian Adias as Gama Singh and Boomer Lynch check on Don Kernodle.

So authentic for the area and time period. I have said it before... it is not the rosters that make wrestling special but how you use your roster. This would get me to tune in every week and that is why it is one of the best promotions in the game.

-A bounty on Lawler with the sleazy manager and Abdulah coming after him. Bill Apter is getting his pen ready now.

-The Best of 7 series for the title shot with the RnR Express and the Rock n Roll RPM's. Anywhere else in the country, the RnR Express would be too good to step foot in the ring with the RPM's but here.... it is a pick em.

-A Jr Heavyweight Tourny with a great mix of young guns, international wrestlers and a few old timers- A Must see.

- And let's not forget, Gama Singh has gone from a "Who" to a "Household Name"

SMW puts up a ton of hot angles and matches with more already announced on the way. The Jr. tourney should be great with stars from all over participating. The RPM's win match #1 in the series over the Express, hope Ricky & Robert can even those odds in match #2.

Hugo as a manager in Tennessee vs. Lawler, I wrote a program like that years back with David Schultz playing the part of Abby here. So I approve of this idea and I think it fits really well.

Did WWE steal your Gama idea and run with his real life nephew Jinder? Always enjoyed Gama's stuff in Calgary so I'm glad he's getting a deserved push here.

Stuff going on everywhere, sure to sell out the buildings!

Lucas walks out with his belt and thanks the fans for all their support in making his way to the title, he says it’s been a long few months with all his matches with Ron Starr and Gama Singh but has finally paid off this past Monday. Gama Singh comes storming out with Don Kernodle and Boomer Lynch in toe. Gama tells Lucas that he was lucky this week and that this Monday he’s taking the title back. The Heartbreakers make their way to the ring to face off with the junior trio of Owen Hart, Scorpio and Tim Horner, the match is action packed and goes for about 8 minutes when Tim Horner pins Steven Dunn with a German Suplex into the pin for the victory for his team.

As they go to leave they are jumped by the Rock n Roll RPM’s, Tommy Lane and Mike Davis with baseball bats, in this vicious attack, the RPM’s do a real number on Morton and Gibson, leaving them bloody on the studio floor.

=== Commercial ===

We return with the janitors mopping up the blood left by the Rock N Roll Express after the jump attack from the RPM’s. Crockett and Platt discuss how disgusted they are with the jump attack they just witnessed, and during the break it was announced via the office of Les Thatcher that the 2nd match in the best of seven’s series will be a Bunkhouse Brawl Match, where anything goes. Following this announcement, we go to the ring with Josh Stroud ready for action, his opponent this week is Boomer Lynch who is joined by Gama Singh, the match goes for 2 minutes when Lynch gets the win after a running splash to the corner, in a dominate display.

=== Commercial ===

Jerry Lawler says he is doing well and this Monday he will get revenge over Abdullah The Butcher, Hugo Savinovich, smoking a cigar walks out to the announcers table, Platt tells Lawler that Savinovich has joined them, Lawler says that when he’s done with Abdullah he’s coming for Savinovich.

Back in the ring Ken Lucas picks up the stunned Singh and slaps on the sleeper. All of a sudden and man in hooded jumper jumps into the ring and confronts Ken Lucas, he removes his hood and its 'ROTTEN' RON STARR, he's returned. Starr hits a low kick to Lucas followed by a piledriver, he then pulls Singh onto Lucas and rolls out of the ring. On the other side unbeknown to Kernodle, he rolls the referee back into the ring and counts the 3 for Gama to regain the title. Ron Starr rolls back into the ring and just stands looking over Lucas. Kernodle is clueless to what happened and so is the referee.
