Again, I'll start a new thread every month for 24/7 talk so it's easier to follow.

Also, if there's something on 24/7 that you think deserves its own thread, feel free to start one.

Just got the April 1981 MSG show, and boy does the timekeeper enjoy his job. He rings the bell before and after every sentence spoken by Howard Finkel to the point where you want to shove his little bell hammer up his ass.

The show also has Patterson vs Slaughter and the Backlund-Hansen match seen on the Cage Match DVD so it all balances out.

The latest episode of TNT features the Moolah/Richter screwjob and a cameo by Mel Phillips. Considering how WWE 24/7 tends to skew toward smarter fans, I find that somewhat hilarious as it unintentionally paints the company in the worst light possible all in a span of 43 minutes.

I got the feeling in that match that Richter knew it was Moolah in there and knew she was getting screwed in the match. She kicked out at one whenever possible.

And it still didn't matter. Gorilla was having trouble even selling it as a near fall when the bell rang.

Watched Super Brawl III tonight. Great show as Rhodes/Payne was really the only match that I wouldn't classify as good. Sting/Vader and RnR/Bodies were both great matches.

Ah, yes. The Credible is better than so and so has been a popular mutant meme for a long time. They used to claim he was better than Austin on a constant basis back in 99-00.

Superbrawl is a great, great show, but that opening tag is just bizaare. A good match, but between the extreme hatred the crowd has for Watts, the sub-Watts level execution of Bagwell and the absolutely insane bumping of Austin and Pillman the match is just a really wierd mesh of stuff that seems to work in spite of itself.

Also that Foley v. Orndorff match really ought to be talked about more both as a quality bout and because in the realm of "crazy Foley" matches it is actually really high, with several potentially career threatining bumps

I never saw the match itself, but one part of Foley's book that stuck out was Orndorff thanking Foley for the match, feeling it revitalized his career.

Tower of Doom match. After match antics sees Kevin Sullivan choke Precious with a chain. Holy fuck is that ever ill-timed.

Not to mention the slo-mo replay right after.

And yet they removed the latest Monday Night War because Benoit and Nancy are on screen together for like five mintues in over three hours of air-time.

It just occurred to me that if they stick to the "no Benoit family" policy, there will be nothing left to show but NWA Saturday Night, WCCW, and AWA (if they even remember that they own those anymore). Plus the old school (W)WWF stuff.

Chris would elminate all the recent WWE ppvs and the Monday Night War shows, and Nancy makes appearances on ECW and Florida. They could still show the stuff from before or after her time in Florida, but Kevin Sullivan's run was really the best run of the territory.

Posted

They're kinda stuck, though. If they keep airing ANY Benoit footage at all, you can bet that Geraldo or O'Reilly or Nancy Grace or some other phaggot would eventually get wind of it, and then air a big "OMG WWE PROFITS FROM ROID-RAGE CHILD MURDERER" expose-type story. And then their stock would take yet another hit and they'd lose more sponsors PTC-style, so forth and so on.

So they've really got to edit Benoit out, at least for now. Like you've pointed out, simply not airing the shows isn't a workable solution, as that eliminates not only the past seven years of WWE programming but a whole lot of other stuff too. My guess? Even as we speak, teams of editors are busily going through the entire WWE footage archive, making PR-friendly versions of all their shows in which Benoit has mysteriously been retconned off the face of the planet. They do similar things with Jesse Ventura's commentary and old WWF logos, so that's what the obvious choice here is.

The reason they do it with Jesse is that he beat Vince in a lawsuit and gets royalties under certain circumstances.

(IIRC, those circumstances are that the footage in question is something that wasn't released on video by the WWE before a certain date. That's why all his WCW commentary is dubbed over and some of his WWF TV commentary is dubbed as well.)

In the case of Benoit, they can air certain periods of WWE programming with minimal changes, such as Benoit's hiatus in 2001 and 2002 due to his neck injury.

Stuff from late 2003 on gets harder to deal with, as Benoit was part of the Smackdown Six and a major PPV player from that period on.

They've got plenty of stuff from the 1970s and '80s to carry them until they figure out a long term solution. For tv shows they can run NWA, AWA, World Class, the TNT/PTW shows, and one more. (I'd recommend a series of Clash of the Champions.) It's an inconvenience but hardly a major problem, as far as 24/7 is concerned. For their video library, 80/90% of what they do is compilations anyway. In those cases avoid his matches and dub over bits of commentary where needed.

Posted

They can also switch MNW to just being Raw and not have to worry about Benoit for 6 years.

They HAVE edited segments from Nitro before, though.

Posted

The sad thing about Benoit being erased from history is that if he wasn't, his surviving children could collect royalties for the rest of their lives.

Explaining that may put people at ease over 24/7 and DVD releases.

Eh, WCCW, NWA, CWF, TNT, PTW, and all of the other stuff are plenty for TV, plus all of the other stuff.

With the proper amount of lead time to cut stuff now I could see them airing the shows w/o the Benoits, as they have cut segments from shows before.

Only problem with that is they'd have to work on TV and eventually turn heel at some point as "evil abandoned children" or something like that.

The difference between this case and Eddie's widow is that Benoit, to my knowledge, didn't leave a HUGE back debt to the IRS when he died.

Eddie's finances were all fucked up, which is why Vicki had to get on TV in addition to getting Eddie's royalty checks.

What stuff has been edited off Nitros? I can tell when watching that something was cut, but I don't remember what. I just assumed it was ads for those contests they were always running/Nitro Party cut-ins/etc.
