Pacific Coast Wrestling show from the Kelowna Memorial Arena, Kelowna, August 2^nd , 1991

 

Ultimo Dragon vs. Michael Modest

 

Modest continues to impress as the standout of the 1991 rookie class. The Serial Thrillaz member went the distance with the former Light Heavyweight champion, going to a 15 minute time limit draw in an exciting technical match.

 

Bart Gunn vs. D-Von Dudley

 

D-Von evened the score with the Gunns, taking out Bart with a snap scoop powerslam

 

Chris Hamrick vs. Little Guido

 

Guido was especially feisty in this match, and came fighting back from whatever Hamrick threw at him. Confederate Currency had to break out the Southern Bellringer (piledriver from the second turnbuckle) to put the FBI member down for good.

 

Rob Van Dam & The Tasmaniac vs. Steve Blackman & Shane Douglas

 

As can be imagined, chaos was the rule in this match. Tasmaniac had Blackman in the Tazmission, only to be told by the ref to release it as they were in the ropes. The Tasmaniac responded by hitting a T-Bone suplex on the ref then locking him in the Tasmission. It took both RVD and the Sinister Minister to pry him off. Needless to say, Blackman and Douglas won by DQ, and there was talk of suspension for the Tasmaniac.

 

Pacific Submission Title Match : Gary Albright © vs. Lance Storm

 

Lance did all he could to get the Canadian Maple Leaf on Albright, but there was no taking down the Animal, who forced Storm to tap out to the Dragon Sleeper.

 

Golden State Tag Team Title Match : The Force Of July (The Patriot & The Eagle) © vs. Buddy Rose & Sean Morley

 

The veteran cunning of Rose did the Playboy Club team well against the champs. The Patriot was able to hit the Patriot Slam on Morley, but the pin was broken up by Scotty The Body and Stevie Richards who rushed the ring, leading to a DQ. The Club continued to attack until the Eagle grabbed a chair from ringside to clear the ring.

We are a few weeks out from Phoenix Firestorm, Pacific Coast Wrestling's Summer Spectacular, and even though it is early, there is so much excitement about the lineup that it just had to be released. After more than a year with the TV title, I can understand why Busick may be slowing down. 

Hart gets the quick pin on Adams. I could just imagine the frustration on Adam's face 

No doubt about it, Williams will get another title shot 

Modest taking Dragon to the limit says a lot 

With things even, I'm sure another hard hitting tag match is coming 

If it takes a second rope piledriver to put him down, that makes Guido a tough guy in my opinion 

Not sure if even the Sinister can control Taz. He's out of control! 

Albright continues his dominance 

After that, I wouldn't be surprised if the FOJ offer Scotty and Stevie a title shot just to get their hands on them

Pacific Wrestling Showcase from the Portland Sports Arena, Portland , on ESPN / TSN, August 7^th, 1991

 

Ultimo Dragon vs. Michael Modest

 

Last weekend, these two thrilled the fans in Kelowna with a gripping battle that went to a 15 minute draw. PCW decided to bring this to the TV audience, and Dragon and Modest put on another technical showcase, once again going to the full 15 minutes. The fans were definitely clamouring to see these two face off again, and something tells me that PCW will do so on an even bigger stage.

 

Fastball (Bobby Horne & Robert Thompson) vs. The FBI

 

Fastball have gained the love of the fans as the good times tag team of the West Coast. While not losing their playful interactions with the fans, Trisa Hayes' duo have started showing that  they are not a team to be taken lightly. They went toe to toe with Jim Cornette's enforcers, even standing their ground with the feared Big Vito. Vito was able to deliver the victory to the Louisville Lip by taking Thompson down with the LBK (Legitimate Businessman's Kick) , but the Pugilistic Paisano's had to put in a lot of work to get there.

 

Pierre Carl Ouellet vs. Caleb Reynolds

 

PCO came off the high of being the Final Survivor at Deseret Storm and ran straight into a buzzsaw called Sabu. Recognizing he would have to take things quite further to take on the Bombay Madman, he showed a more intense edge in this match. The Fighting French Canadian battered Reynolds and planted him with a Piledriver before going up to and landing the Cannonball for the win. If Ouellet is going to go to war, he knows he is going to have to go to the next level.

 

Randy Savage vs. David Young

 

Ever since arriving in PCW , the Macho Man has been laser focused on the Terror Collective in general and Brian Lee in particular. With Miss Elizabeth by his side, Savage made a big dent in the Collective at Deseret Storm and now takes on the so-called Master Of The Spinebuster Slam. To his credit, young didn't back down one inch from Savage, and the Macho Man's usual fervor was cranked up to chip away at the double tough Georgia native. He was finally able to break Young with his trademark diving Elbow Drop. He won't be satisfied, though, until he gets the Bulldozer locked in his sights.

 

Barry Windham vs. Peter Baggenstos

 

Windham has a considerable legacy in his time in PCW, having been Pacific Heavyweight Champion twice and developed a dedicated following among the fans. He is heading towards perhaps his most heated feud yet, locking horns with the Canadian legend Rick Martel, and is getting himself in fighting trim. The Sweetwater native put on a textbook display of dominance, dispatching the rookie with a Superplex. Windham is in his prime and rising to the occasion with Martel.

 

The Eagle vs. Buddy Rose

 

The Force Of July have been defending their Golden State Tag Team Titles against Scotty The Body and Stevie Richards, but that has put them in the line of fire to the entire Playboy Club. Tonight, the Eagle would face the Godfather of the Club himself, Buddy Rose. The wily veteran showed how he was the master of the cheap shot, using every dirty tactic imaginable to weaken and damage the masked man's right knee. Rose looked to put him away with a Figure Four Leglock, but the Eagle countered with an inside cradle. One … two … kickout! The Eagle got back up, and was immediately met by the Inside Out Backbreaker from the Playboy. There was no coming back from that, and Rose got the three count. Even after the final count, Rose kept going after the Eagle's knee until the Patriot charged in and ran him off. It looks like the Playboy did some real damage.

Pacific Coast Wrestling show from the Portland Memorial Coliseum , Portland , on Pacific Super Cards on ESPN / TSN, August 8^th, 1991

 

Bam Bam Bigelow & Iron & Steel (Tony Atlas & Larry Cameron) vs. Chris Adams & The Headbangers

 

The Headbangers continued to show more and more confidence, getting right into the thick of the fray until Bigelow pinned Mosh with a slingshot splash.

 

The Sons Of The Beach (Cannonball Grizz & The Sandman) vs. Coast 2 Coast (John Tatum & Jack Victory)

 

The SoBs scored their biggest victory yet, taking out Tatum by way of with the Wipeout (while Grizz holds the opponent over his knee, Sandman hits a top rope legdrop).

 

Steve Williams vs. Mike Awesome

 

Awesome did his best to injure Williams, knowing Doctor Death was in line for a shot at Kawada's Pacific Heavyweight Title. Steve still prevailed, pinning Awesome following an Oklahoma Roll .

 

Jason Jett vs. Eddie  Guerrero

 

Guerrero continued his rise by defeating a game Jett with the Tornado DDT.

 

Pacific Tag Team Title Match : The Midnight Express © vs. Steven Regal & Tommy Dreamer

 

Regal's shoulder damage from his loss to Albright continued to play a part as the Midnights took him out with the Veg-O-Matic.

 

Pacific Heavyweight Title Match : Toshiaki Kawada © vs. Bret Hart

 

The Hitman fought like a lion to regain the title that he once held. It seemed like he just might do that when he had Kawada set up for the Sharpshooter. Just like clockwork, Chris Adams and Mike Awesome charged out and attacked Hart, leading to a DQ finish. The Headbangers barricaded the locker room doors, and it seemed like it would be impossible for any of Bret's friends to come to the rescue. Then , out of nowhere, two men came out of the audience and leaped over the ringside barricades, charging into the ring. As the League Of Gentlemen scattered, the two interlopers helped the Hitman to his feet. IT WAS OWEN HART AND JIM NEIDHART! Bret's brother and brother in law hadn't been seen on the west coast for a few years, but returned just in time to come to his aid. And right in the nick of time, it seems.

Pacific Coast Wrestling show from McArthur Court, Eugene, August 9^th, 1991

 

Lance Storm vs. Dean Malenko

 

Storm pulled off something of an upset, forcing the Man Of 1000 Holds to give up to the Canadian Maple Leaf.

 

Shane Douglas vs. Fit Finlay

 

Douglas absorbed an hellacious beating from Finlay and battled back, pinning the Belfast Bruiser following a Belly To Belly Suplex.

 

Pacific Submission Title Match : Gary Albright © vs. Chris Jericho

 

Jericho was unable to get Albright down for the Liontamer, and the Animal forced the Thrillseeker to tap out when he caught him in a Camel Clutch.

 

Rob Van Dam & Alex Wright vs. The Thunder Dragons (Jushin Liger & Ultimo Dragon)

 

Liger shocked many in the crowd when he caught RVD coming off the ropes in a running palm thrust to the jaw, getting the pinfall on the California champ.

 

The Force Of July (The Patriot & The Eagle) & Chris Candido vs. Scotty The Body, Stevie Richards, & Sean Morley

 

The damage done by Buddy Rose earlier in the weekend proved to be a factor in this match, as the Eagle was not at full capacity in this match, allowing Scotty to take advantage and pin him following the Body Shot (DDT).

 

Pacific Light Heavyweight Title Match : The Lightning Kid © vs. David Cash

 

Another great title defense closes out the night, with the Kid facing off with an energetic young contender in Cash, ultimately coming out on top with the Lightning Strike (Tombstone).

Pacific Wrestling Showcase from the Oakland Alameda County Arena, Oakland, on ESPN / TSN, August 14^th, 1991

 

The Thunder Dragons vs. Michael Modest & Shane Helms

 

Ultimo Dragon and Michael Modest are coming off a pair of outstanding matches with neither coming out on top. There were some exciting exchanges between the two, although it ultimately came down to Liger pinning Helms following a rana off the top rope. The fans are really becoming intrigued by this showdown between the former champ and the emerging young rookie.

 

Randy Savage vs. Neal Gotlieb

 

Randy Savage's name has long been synonymous among wrestling fans with intensity. The legend has brought every bit of his violent fervor to his feud with Brian Lee, and even when he wasn't across the ring from the Bulldozer, the Macho Man didn't let up one bit. With Miss Elizabeth cheering him on, Savage tore Gotlieb apart, polishing him off with his trademark Diving Elbow Drop. You can bet that Savage will crank things up even further when he gets in the ring with Lee on a major stage.

 

Fastball (Bobby Horne & Robert Thompson) vs. The Dudley Boys

 

Fastball's quest for credibility has gained traction in recent weeks, with Trisa Hayes' duo steadily showing improvement in the ring, showing that they were tough as well as entertaining. Horne and Thompson would face their sternest test yet, as the Dudley boys had been cutting down most of their opposition like a buzzsaw. Fastball held their ground and slugged it out with the monsters in overalls. No matter what the Dudleys dished out, Fastball took it and fired back in turn. Thompson came close to pinning D-Von following a Samoan Drop, but Bubba Ray was able to break it up. D-Von was able to pin Thompson following a snap scoop power slam. Regardless , little by little, Fastball are showing that they are the real deal.

 

Interview : Don Coss stands in the ring

 

Coss : Ladies and gentlemen, my next guest is a former Pacific Heavyweight Champion … Bret Hart!

 

The crowd explodes in cheers as the Hitman makes his way to the ring. Bret took time to slap palms with fans along the way, even putting his trademark wraparound shades on a young fan at ringside before joining Coss.

 

Coss : Bret , you always seem to have the fans on your side , no matter what happens, they stick with you through thick and thin.

 

Bret : You ain't lying, Don. You mentioned I was a former Pacific Heavyweight Champion. That "former" part rankles me, but my fans didn't lose faith in me. It's great having them in your corner. But you know what else is great to have in your corner? Friends and family. Last week, when I was down and it looked like nobody would be able to help me, a couple of great guys pulled my fat out of the fire. And another guy has readily been my partner in matches against the League Of Gentlemen, all while blazing his own trail in PCW. So I want to bring out three of the best pals a person could hope to add … Jim Neidhart, Owen Hart, and Bam Bam Bigelow!

 

The crowd cheers more as all three wrestlers join Bret in the ring, high fiving the fans along the way.

 

Bret : I can't tell you how much it fills my heart to have you guys looking out for me. Jim, my old partner … we held the tag titles together. But you've proved you can get it done on your own, just like I did. (Neidhart strokes his beard and gives his trademark cackle) Owen, my kid brother … you aren't a kid anymore. You are a grown man and your own man. I couldn't be prouder of what you have accomplished. (Owen beams at his brother) And Bammer … hey, I told you to stop working with me , that you needed to focus more on your own career. So what did you do? You proved you can do it all. You are on a rocket to the top of Pacific Coast Wrestling, and you still take time to team up with me when the League Of Gentlemen come after me. I don't know what I did to be so lucky with my friends, but I appreciate it.

 

Bam Bam  : Don't mention it, Bret. The reason you deserve loyalty is that you give it just as much and are just as good a friend to us. You gave me the kick in the butt that I needed, and that inspired me to become what I am now. I am dead set on going to the top of PCW, but I am not going to let that make me forget who my friends are.

 

Owen : What Bam Bam says goes double for us. I've always looked up to you, and you've always looked out for me. No way I am going to turn my back on my brother when he needs help.

 

Neidhart : That's right! Chris Adams and his League Of Creeps have been throwing their weight around for too long! Now they have to face the Hitman, The Anvil, the Rocket and the Beast From The East, and they are in a world of trouble!

 

The Eagle vs. Sean Morley

 

The Force Of July started out defending their Golden State Tag Team Tiles against Scotty The Body and Stevie Richards. This has bloomed into a full blown feud with the entire Playboy Club, and the Club has focused much of their attacks on the Eagle. Eagle took a battering last week, first at the hands of Buddy Rose and then in a six man match. He was noticeably limping as he came to the ring, and the Perfect Specimen clearly could smell blood in the water. Morely was relentless in going after the Eagle's damaged leg, and the masked man struggled to defend himself. Morley was close to administering the Full Nelson, and although the Eagle fought hard to try to get to the ropes, a boot to the back of the leg shut that down. Morley locked the hold in and the Eagle immediately tapped out. Morley was looking to do more damage after the match, but the Patriot rushed in to protect his partner. The FoJ's title reign may well be in serious jeopardy.

 

Little Guido vs. Paul Wachter

 

One of the more surprising contenders from the 1991 rookie class has been Little Guido Maritato. Despite his diminutive stature, Guido has consistently proved the adage that it isn't the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog, and he has plenty of fight in him. The Pugnacious Paisano has showed his willingness to do whatever task Jim Cornette throws at him, as well as a determination to knuckle under to nobody. Guido pummeled Wachter from bell to bell, polishing him off with with the Sicilian Slice (legdrop Bulldog). Little Guido is clearly on track for big things in the future.

 

Roddy Piper vs. Stevie Richards

 

It just goes to show how much things can change over the course of a year. Earlier in the year, Richards had faced off with Piper, and the Hot Scot handed him a humiliating defeat, one of a series of losses and mistakes that very nearly got the Dancing Fool fired from the Playboy Club. Scotty The Body took Richards under his wing, and through Scotty's stern training and conditioning, Richards developed into a valued asset to the Playboy Club. If Piper was expecting the hapless buffoon he had handily defeated earlier in the year, he had best think again. With Scotty in his corner, Richards chipped away at Piper with shots and hits, enraging the Rowdy One with his hit and run tactics. Piper fought back, but Richards was able to keep himself just outside of his grasp. Even when Piper was able to get his hands on Richards and land his moves, Richards' considerable vigor allowed him to bounce back and keep going. Little by little, though, Piper was able to catch up with and wear down Richards , trapping him in the Sleeper Hold.  It was then that Scotty chose to strike, attacking Piper and leading to a DQ decision. The pair double teamed Piper until Chris Candido ran out, at which point they scattered from the ring. He may not have been victorious, but Richards can at least say he held his own against a legend.

Pacific Coast Wrestling show from the Cow Palace , San Francisco,  on Pacific Super Cards on ESPN / TSN, August 15^th , 1991

 

Pierre Carl Ouellet vs. Alex Wright

 

PCO has been on quite a roll since Deseret Storm, propelling him to victory over a determined Wunderkind by way of the Cannonball.

 

Shane Douglas vs. John Tatum

 

Despite the dirty tricks of Tatum, Douglas got a convincing win when he hit a diving cross body press.

 

 

The Patriot vs. Buddy Rose

 

Perhaps the Patriot was distracted with concern for his partner, the Eagle, but the masked here seemed off his game, allowing the canny veteran Rose to defeat him with the Inside Out Backbreaker.

 

Pacific Tag Team Title Match : The Midnight Express © vs. The Sons Of The Beach (Cannonball Grizz & The Sandman)

 

The SoBs were not about to take any of Jim Cornette's guff , and fired back hard against the Midnights. It broke down to all four wrestlers brawling in the ring and a no contest result.

 

California Title Match : Rob Van Dam © vs. Steven Regal

 

Regal is working to come back after losing the Submission Title to Gary Albright, Regal presented a determined challenge to RVD, but fell short by way of a Frog Splash from the champ.

 

Barry Windham vs. Scotty The Body

 

Scotty gave a good accounting of himself, all things considered, but Windham was ultimately able to bring him down with the Superplex.

 

 

Pacific Television Title Match : Big Bully Busick © vs. Eddie Guerrero

 

Guerrero continues to be the most dangerous contender for Busick's TV title, winning the match but not the belt when he hit a dive on the Man From Powerhouse Hill to the outside, making it back into the ring just in time to get the win by Countout.

Pacific Coast Wrestling show from the Selland Arena, Fresno,  August 16^th , 1991

 

Mike Maverick vs. Big Vito

 

Vito proved his value to Jim Cornette as a fearsome enforcer, taking out Maverick by way of the LBK (Legitimate Businessman's Kick).

 

The New Foundation vs. The Headbangers

 

In his previous run in PCW, Jim Neidhart had a considerable undefeated streak in his hometown of Fresno. That continued into this match, although the Anvil had to work for it. The Headbangers were feisty and not going to be pushovers, and it was a fierce battle before the New Foundation prevailed by way of the Hart Attack.

 

Tommy Dreamer vs. Brian Lee

 

Lee is proving to be just a ferocious as his rival Randy Savage, rampaging through Tommy Dreamer and planting him with the Prime Time Slam .

 

Steve Williams vs. Jack Victory

 

On his way to challenge for Toshiaki Kawada's Pacific Heavyweight Title, Dr. Death bowled over Victory and crushed him with the Oklahoma Stampede.

 

 Iron & Steel ( Tony Atlas & Larry Cameron) vs. The Oregon Wrecking Crew (Gary Albright & David Young)

 

This match between the former Pacific Tag champs and the former Golden State Tag champs wound up being a huge hoss battle, with all four of these heavyweights going to all out way. In a huge result, the OWC got a major win with Young pinned Cameron following a Spinebuster Slam.

 

Pacific Light Heavyweight Title Match : The Lightning Kid ©  vs. Jason Jett

 

The evening closed out with an exciting Light Heavyweight battle, where the Kid successfully defended his title by way of a Moonsault Body Press .
