If Silva'd kept the schtick up the entire fight it would've been glorious. I highly doubt people would've booed him had he kept it up for four rounds and then killed Maia in the fifth, instead of just giving up. His fight against Griffin is still the greatest thing in company history, and he's still a star, him vs. GSP will do a lot of buys (assuming he can make weight and I definitely share people's doubts about that) and fuck the haters round two was beautiful. Then again the UFC isn't PPV over here so I wasn't paying $50 or whatever for it. I wish I could've seen Dana's face after the fight though, the shot after Mir lost at 111 was fantastic.

One gets the feeling that Silva is completely bored at middleweight, hence his string of fucking off performances at that weight. I know they have issues booking him against his stable mate at light heavy, but they really need to get his ass up there and book him against what remains a pretty damn deep group of LHW's. It also would open up middleweight to fighters who actually give a shit about the division.

I like Silva when he's "on" and motivated. A really interesting, quirky, "different" fighting style. But the crap performances... it's a bit like watching a Macho Camcho title fight. You feel like you've wasted your time and money watching the fight, and you'd much rather watch two fighters who give a shit. My problem with Silva is that he doesn't have that "I want to see him beat" heat for *me* that say Macho or Prince Naseem. I never liked either of those guys. I like Silva. His bad performances just are a pain.

This all reminds me of how they showed the Thrilla in Manila on ESPN Classic a couple weeks back. The doctor waives of the fight, Ali is on his knees in exhaustion, and his corner people are all around him like he's going to collapse. When the announcer comes in the ring to get comments from him Ali's response was something like "first off I just want to say I'm the greatest, Fraizer may be the best in the world after me". Just classic stuff. We get so used to how Ali is today, it's easy to forget he was by far the best "heel character" of all time.

What's funny is that Ali was a *babyface* by the time of the Thilla. The biggest babyface in sports in the country, if not the world.

He was a heel in the 60s. The title stripage and the anti-war stance turned drew him some more fans as a face, though those who really hated him in the 60s only hated him more because of it. He cleary was a heel at the first Ali-Fraizer, and kinda-sorta the heel at the second.

But the Rumble in the Jungle turned him face. Foreman wasn't liked at all, and scared the shit out of lots of racist white america more than Ali.

For all the "gorilla in Manila" stuff being heel in hindsight, at the time fans ate the shit up.

I was 9 at the time of the Thiller, 8 at the time of the Rumble. I don't recall any of my group of friends (or their older brothers) or anyone at school who wasn't pulling for Ali in either fight. That was a whole bunch of white kids thinking that Ali was the greatest thing in sports. :)

No surprise Syfy axed NXT. It's a science fiction network, thus I'm not surprised that they don't want two wrestling shows on their channel, especially when NXT is currently only drawing so so ratings for the network. That's probably also why Smackdown is set to continue to be buried on Friday nights, a poor night for drawing TV ratings, and not moved to Thursdays, the best night for drawing TV ratings. Their flagship science fiction shows would be saved for Thursdays. I'm surprised this point missed Dave and Bryan on their radio show, even Bix on Cageside Seats :), as it seemed a pretty obvious one.

Regarding Anderson Silva, there's something funny about people advocating that his next fight should be relegated to prelims or free TV, when if it was a wrestling promoter doing that they'd complain that it devalues the title or was sabotaging the performer.

Well, keep in mind that Syfy's whole name change came about as part of making the network less about Sci-Fi content, so NXT sticking around wasn't the most ridiculous thing in the world. Thankfully for WWE, the format means it can end without looking like it was cancelled.

I was speaking more about the puzzled attitude about keeping the show on Thursdays. Regarding the name change, that's a good point I'd forgotten about. That said, I always got the perception that network executives within Syfy weren't keen on professional wrestling being on their station and it was a decision foisted on them by Bonnie Hammer. Thus, why I'm not surprised they would balk at too much wrestling being on their station.

They may be looking at what the re-runs do vs Smackdown pulling in 3M or so viewers and think they can get re-run value on Saturday night or whatnot. Long term, with the DVR becoming increasingly common (plus watching shows online, etc), re-run value is going to be very low relative to first run programing. One gets the feeling that Universal wanted to lock in 52 x 2 x 2 hours of consistent first run material.

SyFy might not be a great long term fit, but with so many Universal/Comcast outlets to work with, down the road they can always move it.

The initial move to Friday seems like a decent first spot: it's at the time and day people are use to watching it. Probably best to hook them in with an easy transition, then look for another time down the road if needed.

The doesnt respect the gay it seems:

Ric Flair confronted an on-air male companion of Orlando Jordan at a bar that several wrestlers and TNA crew members hung out at after the Impact taping last Tuesday. Flair got so upset while watching the male companion dance at the bar that he confronted the man and cut a promo on him. Jordan's male companion was said to be shaken by Flair's comments and left the bar.

Powell's POV: I originally heard that Flair asked the man to leave, but was told yesterday that Jordan's friend left the bar because he was shaken up by what Flair told him. I'll let you form your own conclusions as to why Flair was so uncomfortable with the man. Perhaps there's more to the story that I'm not aware of, but Flair was said to be fuming over the male companion having a role in the company and not belonging in the locker room.

Dave Meltzer gives more details at his forum, but cannot see the forest from the trees.

You know, 98% of that column echos my view of Jim Cornette these days. Yeah, I like a good Corny rant as much as the next guy, but he sat there and ate shit while working with Russo in TNA and only went back to the ranting when he got fired. I don't think I'd put him in Iron Sheik category yet, but he's clearly turned the corner to self-parody.

Despite it rambling and being repetitious at times I have to agree that article it is a pretty solid summation of modern day Corny.

Agreed. I'm not the best one to point towards rambling & repetitious, but there were a lot of good points that got buried by the length of the piece and too great of use of the word "I".
