rovert
But yeah, it seems pretty out there that someone who has written about wrestling for a living for as long as he has, been watching as long as he has (and he was already in his early teens at that point), etc. would have never seen that match until the last week. Again I wasnt shocked that Bryan says he never saw it but Vinny on the other hand that was super weird as he reviews a tonne of stuff for the newsletter and the match is on both the Piper & Starrcade DVDs. Bryan Alvarez's shitty taste in wrestling suddenly makes a whole lot of sense. He hasn't watched a whole lot of good wrestling so he has no real basis of comparison. Of course, he probably should lay off the "omfg SHAWN MICHAELS IS THE BEST WRESTLER EVAHHHHHH" stuff, since he hasn't seen that much compared to most other wrestling fans, and I'd even say it's debatable whether he should have a HOF ballot, but still, we should probably cut the guy some slack if he hasn't really watched that much wrestling outside of WWF/WCW/TNA. Sorry but I find these posts unbearable. You carry on like taste in wrestling is this completely objective thing. You are making sweeping claims about how much Bryan has actually watched with limited/little basis. Even though it is odd that Alvarez has not seen much stuff pre 1990, it is even worse to me that on most weeks Dave doesn't watch Smackdown. The show is usually around an hour and fifteen minutes on DVR and for the most recognized wrestling journalist, its incredible to me that more times that not he doesn't watch the second highest rated show. This would be like Peter King skipping out on Monday Night Football. Although I agree with you there some mitigating circumstances besides of course Yahoo, Smackdown is on a weird/late time in Cali or at least was before it changed channels to the best of my knowledge, Dave mentioned before that Friday is family night for him and lets face it dave must be shattered towards the end of the week, last week Bryan said that Dave fell asleep watching Smackdown which delayed him recording a radio show. In addition Smackdown has turned into a skippable show from the quaint wrestling it used to be. But yeah he should be able to watch it on DVR. As far as what he's watched, it's been clear for a while, but now we know he never saw a legendary match that's readily available on VHS and DVD until this past week. As far as the Michaels stuff, think about it: If someone never saw as much of the older stuff, of course they'd think Michaels was the best ever because he was the one guy left doing certain little touches that older veterans did, even if he usually wasn't very good at it post-comeback. Look at Dave: He's a Michaels fan but not close to as extreme as Bryan, who thought that Michaels' performances on Raw in the first 1/4 of 2007 made up the best run of any wrestler in history on the best run of wrestling TV in history. Dave likes Michaels, but he would never make a claim like that.

I’m entertained by Bryan but he is the living embodiment of the recency principle. I think his light of day opinion is different or at least more moderate. Matt D
I swear there was another best of Starcade tape later on ( I assume the 83-87 one was the double tape) that I first saw the dog collar match on in the late 90s. It was clipped, but you got the idea.
Bix
WCW released another one (about an hour long) that I think covered best of Starrcade '83-'90.
rovert
Speaking of Bryan Alverez's taste in wrestling he expanded on his greatest workers bell to bell on Ed's blogtalk show: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/edward-loredo...reatest-matches starting at around the 19min mark. Wont spoil his picks, I let one of you guys hear it. EDIT: DVDR burial at the end
shawmic
I could be wrong but I'm almost positive Bryan didn't see the 1989 Great American Bash until a year ago when it first aired on 24/7. I think even Dave was surprised when he brought up he saw it for the first time. Again, could be wrong but I remember the discussion on an Observer radio show. kjh
I was surprised when Bryan admitted not too long ago in a radio show with Todd Martin that he still hadn't finished reading Bret Hart's biography due to its length.
Bix
I was surprised when Bryan admitted not too long ago in a radio show with Todd Martin that he still hadn't finished reading Bret Hart's biography due to its length. His whole "I love hardcover books and bought a Kindle because I love reading!" shtick sure seems more and more like a front every day. By the way, WRT Dave's UFC coverage: Besides bringing up that specific match being kinda random (Kerry used that as his entrance music for at least 9 years), the entrance music is barely audible on the TV show with the match. It's one of the only (if not THE only) WCCW matches where WWE hasn't edited the entrances out on 24-7/Classics On Demand.
Eduardo
It's not really surprising that he hasn't finished reading Hart's book. I remember a few years ago, he used to bring up how much he hated reading professional wrestling books and how he would rather read anything else instead. Bix
"Shawn did something different in every match." wut Rockers not being in Bryan's top 5 tag teams shocks me. EDIT: Ay Loss, Bryan is saying that Michaels' back injury wasn't as bad as it was played up publicly. "They said that one bump could cripple him and it wasn't that bad." Oy Bryan on HHH-Michaels street fight "That is one of the great psychological matches of all time."

Poor Dave doesn't seem to know no one under 35 is going to know who any of the Von Erichs are.
kjh
Regarding Bret's book, I don't think that excuse holds water, given that it's one of the best books ever written about professional wrestling and he is a wrestling reporter. It really is a must read book for someone who covers the business for a living. Regarding the podcast, I see Bryan (and everyone else) forgets that Shawn went into the Observer Hall Of Fame in 2003, as he says how it was absolutely bullshit that people kept him out of the Hall Of Fame for being an asshole after he came back, had a series of great matches, wasn't an asshole anymore and helped WWE draw money. Kobashi didn't last as long as Michaels? Really there's not much difference when you factor in all of Shawn's layoffs over the years. Shawn not having a pat formula for a match is funny too. Putting Kurt on the list not Bret is funny given his reasoning when Marty Jannetty and Tatanka weren't even close to as bad as Tom Magee was and weren't ever going to be groomed to be the next big thing in wrestling after they were hired. Bix
What are his claims about the site? That I paid Jonathan Snowden some ridiculous amount for the domain name. It's blatantly false. SBN owns everything including the domain name. When Jon left, he recommended me as his replacement and I took the gig. Ed's made up lots of other stuff about me in the past that I don't remember the specifics of. sek69
I like the latest WO.com tease headline: "Spoiler: WWE Turn Coming" and when you click the link it's just a note from the Tribute to the Troops show about Melina on the heel side of an 8 person Diva tag match. Also it's a subscriber only link.
Jingus
I can't imagine that Bryan never actually saw the first Starrcade, it's too historically important an event to ignore. I think it's probably just his memory sucking again. Alvarez might as well be called Alzheimers for his amazingly awful memetic abilities. I've seriously known lifelong stoners who have much better long-term memories than he does. Which kinda feeds into his personality. When he calls something "the best/worst _____ ever!", he's clearly not speaking literally, but he does say it a whole lot. I sometimes have similar problems remembering if I've watched something before or not, but I haven't seen nearly the immense volume of wrestling that he has. I'd imagine that having to watch every wrestling show every week, for purposes of work instead of entertainment, can be a hell of a brain drain.
