The Thread Killer
Maple Leaf Wrestling MAPLE LEAF GARDENS Toronto, Ontario March 29, 1981 Attendance: 12,450 Maple Leaf Wrestling returned to home base on Sunday March 29, 1981 for another marquee event. This show featured three matches where Championships were on the line. Fans know that any Maple Leaf Wrestling event that takes place from Canada’s premier Pro Wrestling Arena is bound to be exciting...and this was certainly no exception. First Match: Ricky Johnson vs. Tim Gerrard VS. Ricky “Soulman” Johnson (brother of the popular Rocky Johnson) recently made his return to Maple Leaf Wrestling after a brief absence which involved a tour of the Eastern Canadian Maritime provinces. “The Soulman” was given a warm welcome back from the Maple Leaf Gardens faithful and was able to dispatch veteran Tim Gerrard. Gerrard managed a brief flurry of offense but was eventually and rather quickly overwhelmed by Ricky’s speed and footwork. Official Result: Ricky “Soulman” Johnson pinned Tim Gerrard at 7:13 with a lateral press following a high hip toss Second Match: Brian Adidas vs. Iron Mike Sharpe VS. Brian Adidas has been making some waves since his arrival in Maple Leaf Wrestling, and has managed to put together an impressive undefeated streak. Brian’s opponent Iron Mike Sharpe continues to be a force to be reckoned with, and has also been on quite a tear lately. Thanks to his infamous black leather forearm brace (which some contend is loaded) Sharpe has recently racked up big wins over Ricky Johnson, Tony Parisi and George Wells. This match began (as usual) with Iron Mike Sharpe commandeering the house microphone and demanding to be introduced as “Canada’s Greatest Athlete.” Ring announcer Norm Kimber begrudgingly complied, however the fans were not impressed. What the fans were impressed with was Brian Adidas. Adidas took control of this bout early and had Iron Mike bellowing at the top of his lungs, as “Canada’s Greatest Athlete” was flung from one end of the ring to the other with a series of hip tosses and arm drags. Sharpe managed to turn the tide and gain the advantage for a good portion of the match, hammering Adidas down with a series of stomps, kicks to the gut and of course plenty of his patented overhead forearm smashes. In the end, Sharpe had Adidas stunned...and Iron Mike began to fiddle with his forearm brace. I’m not one to accuse somebody of cheating, but it certainly looked like Iron Mike Sharpe was “loading up” his brace. This brief distraction gave Brian Adidas a chance to regain his composure. You can tell Brian Adidas has been studying his opponent and knew exactly what to expect. Adidas grabbed Sharpe’s forearm and actually managed to briefly overpower him. Adidas was able to smash Iron Mike Sharpe in the forehead with his own forearm brace, which stunned “Canada’s Greatest Athlete” (and certainly proves that it’s likely the brace has more than just Mike’s forearm inside.) As Iron Mike stumbled around the ring, dazed by the blow to the head from his own forearm brace, Brian Adidas quickly scrambled to the top rope...and managed to hit Iron Mike Sharpe with a picture perfect flying body press. Official Result: Brian Adidas pinned Iron Mike Sharpe at 8:22 with a flying bodypress Third Match: Bad Leroy Brown vs. Huge Tom Lintz VS. We haven’t seen Huge Tom Lintz in a few weeks, since his disastrous defeat at the hands of Dewey Robertson on Maple Leaf Wrestling television. As you will remember, Big John Studd laid quite a beating on Huge Tom after they lost their Quarterfinal Match in the NWA International Tag Team Championship Tournament. There was some speculation that Lintz might leave town, but it seems he has chosen to simply lay low for a couple of weeks, heal his injury and he has now returned looking more sullen than ever. As soon as the sound of “Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown” by Jim Croce started playing over the sound system in Maple Leaf Gardens, the fans came to life. We have only seen the big man from Savannah Georgia a few times here in Maple Leaf Wrestling, most notably as a Tag Team partner with Sweet Ebony Diamond...but the fans in Toronto really took a liking to the affable big man, and have welcomed him back with open arms. This match was your typical contest between two big bulls who both tip the scales at well over 300 pounds. You would never have confused this match with a contest featuring Billy Robinson. The two men basically spent the entire contest trying to knock each other off their feet. They exchanged shoulder blocks, shoulder tackles, clotheslines, forearm smashes across the chest and even a few headbutts. With every exchange, the ring shook from the impact and the fans were fully invested in the contest and happily went along for the ride. Bad Leroy Brown finally managed an impressive feat when he hoisted Huge Tom Lintz over his head with a crushing bodyslam, and followed it up with a big splash. That was more than enough to knock the wind out of Huge Tom Lintz and secure the victory for the popular Bad Leroy Brown. Official Result: Bad Leroy Brown pinned Huge Tom Lintz at 6:58 with a splash following a bodyslam Fourth Match - ELIMINATION MATCH: The Second Generation Superstars vs. Moose Morowski & The Kelly Twins & & VS. & The rivalry between these two factions has been going on for weeks now, and if you saw the confrontation between the two groups on Maple Leaf Wrestling television last month, or any of their encounters on the various events around the Maple Leaf Wrestling territory since then...you know how volatile the situation is between these six men. For those of you who missed it...this all started when Whipper Watson Jr. and Kelly Kiniski welcomed Bruno Sammartino Jr. back to Maple Leaf Wrestling on television last month. The three popular young men were giving an interview when they were interrupted by Moose Morowski. Morowski complained that the three youngsters were hogging the spotlight and distracting attention from veterans like himself and The Kelly Twins. Morowski pointed out that he had fought all three of the young men’s fathers...and insulted them all. Kelly Kiniski attacked, which brought out The Kelly Twins and a massive brawl erupted between the two factions. There have been a number of major incidents between the two groups since. A perfect example would be the big show in Hamilton last month, when the two groups took turns interfering in each other’s matches to the point another brawl broke out and both factions had to be escorted from the building. The two teams finally met in a Six Man Tag match last week in Oshawa, but the war was far from over. The feud continued and has come home to Maple Leaf Gardens. As an added twist, this match was contested under elimination rules...which set up some potentially dangerous scenarios. There was every chance one member of a team could end up seriously outnumbered, and sure enough that eventuality occurred. The atmosphere was exciting and the action was intense when the match began. It must be said that Moose Morowski and The Kelly Twins appeared to do a much better job functioning as a unit, performing tandem maneuvers and cutting off the ring by keeping the opposing team at bay. As a result, Morowski and The Kelly Twins were surprisingly successful at eliminating two of the Second Generation Superstars in relatively short order. However, Kelly Kiniski bravely fought back against the 3-1 odds. Here is the sequence of elimination: Moose Morowski eliminated Phil Watson Jr. at 5:14 by pinfall after a clothesline Mike Kelly pinned Bruno Sammartino Jr. at 7:12 after a double flapjack Kelly Kiniski pinned Pat Kelly at 9:21 following a neckbreaker Kelly Kiniski pinned Mike Kelly at 9:23 with a small package Moose Morowski defeated Kelly Kiniski by referee stoppage at 11:17 when Kiniski passed out in an over-the-shoulder backbreaker. It appears that Morowski may have knocked Kiniski out by punching him with an illegal object (brass knuckles) out of the sight of the referee, before applying the backbreaker Official Result: Moose Morowski and The Kelly Twins win the Elimination Match over the Second Generation Superstars at 11:17 ~INTERMISSION~ After the intermission, Norm Kimber made an announcement to the fans that Maple Leaf Wrestling would be returning to Maple Leaf Gardens next month, on April 26, 1981. Kimber also announced that Dewey Robertson would be receiving the shot that he earned at the NWA Canadian Heavyweight Championship against Big John Studd on April 11, 1981 in front of his hometown fans at the Hamilton Convention Centre. Fifth Match: Johnny Weaver and Mike Rotundo vs. Leo Burke and Don Kernodle VS. Weaver and Rotundo are coming off a devastating loss to The Della Serra Brothers in the Semifinals of the NWA International Tag Team Championship tournament. Burke and Kernodle (or “The Terrible Two” as Billy Red Lyons has dubbed them) have recently been working together and are making rumblings about starting a new faction and attempting to “take over” Maple Leaf Wrestling. Leo Burke of course is a very talented and accomplished Canadian Professional Wrestler who has spent a great deal of time working for the Grand Prix promotion in the Canadian Maritime Provinces, but he has undoubtedly achieved his highest level of success out west, working for Stampede Wrestling. Burke is a multi-time North American Champion...and although Stampede Wrestling is not an official member of the National Wrestling Alliance, so this title is not officially recognized by Maple Leaf Wrestling...his accomplishments are respected here in Toronto, if not recognized. Don Kernodle has gained a high level of infamy working as a compatriot of Sgt. Slaughter in Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling. However, Kernodle has made many trips to Maple Leaf Wrestling in the past, and has managed to infuriate Canadian fans by claiming that all Maple Leaf Wrestling fans are jealous of Americans and secretly wish they were American. Security has actually had to intervene to prevent fans from attacking Kernodle recently, when he taunted them saying that “all Canadians wished they were Yanks.” This tag match was a tightly contested, spirited affair with neither team gaining a clear advantage for a prolonged period of time. Weaver and especially Rotundo managed to keep this contest a mat based technical competition for the most part. While Burke and Kernodle are not capable of keeping up with Weaver and Rotundo hold for hold, they managed to counter much of the offense that was thrown at them. Both Johnny Weaver and Leo Burke are known as masters of the Sleeper Hold, and there was an exciting sequence during this match where the two men battled back and forth, each man trying unsuccessfully to lock the other in a sleeper, only for his opponent to escape. It has to be said that the advantage in this match ended up going to Burke and Kernodle due to their willingness to ignore, bend, and outright break the rules. Both men were happy to distract the referee so their partner could result to some form of nefarious tactics. And that is what swayed the result of this match. While Don Kernodle kept the referee occupied by entering the ring while he was not the legal man, Leo Burke managed to drop Johnny Weaver across the top rope throat first, and then as the referee returned his attention to the ring, Burke was able to pin Johnny Weaver’s shoulders to the mat using a backslide while Weaver was still struggling for air. While this result cannot in any way be called an upset, it is a major victory for Burke and Kernodle and certainly sends a message to the rest of the roster that they are here, and need to be taken seriously. Result: Leo Burke and Don Kernodle defeated Johnny Weaver and Mike Rotundo at 14:33 when Burke pinned Weaver with a backslide. Sixth Match - For the NWA Canadian Television Championship: Dino Bravo (c) vs. The Great Hossein Arab VS. I would be remiss in recapping this match without providing some backstory. Several weeks ago on Maple Leaf Wrestling Television, most of you saw The Della Serra Brothers eliminate Dominic DeNucci and Tony “Cannonball” Parisi from the Quarterfinals of the NWA International Tag Team Championship Tournament. In the process of winning the match, The Della Serra Brothers seriously injured Tony Parisi by executing their devastating finishing maneuver, in which Bob Della Serra held Parisi prone in a front facelock, while Rocky scaled to the top rope and leapt off, landing on the back of the neck of his opponent knee first and driving Parisi into the mat face first. This move (while technically legal) is absolutely brutal. Not only does Rocky Della Serra smash his knee into the back of the neck of his opponent, but Bob drives the victim into the canvas face first in the process. Every time the team has executed this maneuver it has resulted in victory. After beating DeNucci and Parisi, The Della Serra Brothers were not satisfied. They beat up Dominic DeNucci and tied him up in the ring ropes, and then proceeded to execute the move (now known as “The Della Serra Driver”) a second time...after they had already won the match and beat their opponent. It looked as if The Della Serra Brothers were actually considering executing this move a third time...which could have caused catastrophic and even permanent injury. Enter Dino Bravo. Bravo is a close personal friend of both Dominic DeNucci and Tony Parisi. Bravo could not stand to see his friend attacked like this, so he rushed the ring and attacked The Della Serra Brothers, driving them back to the dressing room. Even though Dino Bravo is the NWA Canadian Television Champion and has issues of his own to worry about...by rescuing Parisi and DeNucci he clearly put himself in the sights of The Della Serra Brothers. This past week on Maple Leaf Wrestling Television, the situation came to a head. After successfully defending his championship, Bravo gave an interview where he chastised The Della Serra Brothers for their unsportsmanlike conduct. Bravo even stated that The Della Serra Brothers were bringing disgrace on Italian-Canadians like himself, especially those that hail from Quebec. The Della Serra Brothers clearly did not appreciate this...and they let it be known. Bob and Rocky Della Serra brutally attacked Bravo with a chair, repeatedly hitting him across the back, following up with a series of tandem stomps and boots to the same area. Dino Bravo was clearly injured. Despite this attack, Dino Bravo gamely appeared at Maple Leaf Gardens on this night to fulfill his obligations and defend his Television Championship. Unfortunately, in doing so he stepped directly into the trap of the Della Serra Brothers. The Great Hossein Arab had already made his way down the ramp to the ring in Maple Leaf Gardens, and had been announced as the challenger. Hossein was proudly waving the flag of Iran and had taken the house microphone and reminded the fans in attendance that (in his opinion) Iran was number one. As Dino Bravo slowly and gingerly made his way up the stairs and started making his way down the famous ramp to the ring in Maple Leaf Gardens...The Della Serra Brothers appeared from behind him yet again. And yet again, they were brandishing folding chairs. The attack was quick, precise and brutal. Before anybody could intervene, both Della Serra Brothers bashed Bravo across the back with the chairs, sending him sprawling and leaving him twitching. The attack over, the brothers vanished...leaving the battered and barely conscious Dino Bravo literally face down on the ramp. At this point, a group of referees and backstage officials appeared and tried to tend to Dino Bravo, and lead him to the back for medical attention. Just as Bravo was being helped to his feet, The Great Hossein Arab once again commandeered the house microphone. Hossein proclaimed that Dino Bravo was weak, and a coward...just like all Canadians and especially all Italians. The Great Hossein demanded that Bravo bring him the Television Championship belt and leave it in the ring...and that Bravo forfeit the title. This enraged Bravo, who broke free of the officials and staggered to the ring, clutching the small of his back and limping badly. Bravo entered the ring and began to hammer Hossein with punches, demanding that the referee call for the bell. The official looked skeptical and somewhat helpless, but he shrugged and called for the bell. For a few moments, Bravo actually maintained the upper hand and had Hossein rocked with the repeated punches to the head. Unfortunately, Bravo was clearly acting on pure adreniline, and it didn’t last long. Hossein folded Bravo up with a kick to the gut with his infamous pointed boot. Bravo folded up, and The Great Hossein expertly threw Dino Bravo through the air with a Belly-to-Back Suplex. As the fans voiced their loud disapproval, The Great Hossein stood above the prone Dino Bravo...Hossein took a moment to groom his mustache and pose...and then he clamped on his patented Camel Clutch. Dino Bravo screamed in agony as The Great Hossein Arab leaned back and wrenched on the lower back of the Television Champion. This of course is the exact area The Della Serra Brothers had injured both last week on Television and just moments earlier. Bravo hung on as long as he could, but he couldn’t bear the additional pain long...and he had no choice but to submit. Official Result: The Great Hossein Arab becomes the NEW NWA CANADIAN TELEVISION CHAMPION by defeating Dino Bravo via Submission with The Camel Clutch at 3:13 After the match, the fans jeered and pelted Hossein with garbage as he made his way down the ramp and returned to the locker room, holding his newly won championship title belt high above his head. Meanwhile, Dominic DeNucci, Tony Parisi and a group of referees and backstage officials rushed to the ring and carried the injured and barely conscious Dino Bravo to the back for much needed medical attention. The Main Event The Finals of the NWA International Tag Team Championship Tournament Winners to be declared the Tag Team Champions Angelo “King Kong” Mosca & Dewey Robertson vs. The Della Serra Brothers VS. Before the match, the flamboyant “Pretty Boy” Floyd Creatchman made his way to the ring, much to the dismay of the fans. Creatchman joined Billy Red Lyons and Mike McMan at the announcers table at ringside. As much as I might dislike Floyd Creatchman and disapprove of his tactics, I am sure the commentary he provided for this historic match will be highly entertaining if nothing else. I can’t say I’m surprised that Floyd Creatchman would show up...his client Big John Studd was not booked to wrestle on this card (his next title defense is the aforementioned match with Dewey Robertson in Hamilton in a few weeks) but there is no way that Creatchman would allow a major event to happen at Maple Leaf Gardens without finding an excuse to make some sort of appearance. The Della Serra Brothers were the first team to appear on the ramp. The negative reaction from the fans in attendance was almost deafening. It was not enough that The Della Serra Brothers defeated three extremely popular teams to make it to the finals of this tournament, by dispatching George Wells and Sweet Ebony Diamond, then DeNucci and Parisi and finally Johnny Weaver and Mike Rotundo. Their tactics in winning these matches have enraged the fans even further, and the icing on the cake was their despicable attack on Dino Bravo just before this match...and costing him the Television Championship. Just to stoke the fires, both Bob and Rocky Della Serra stooped over and held their backs, limping their way to the ring and laughing hysterically…mocking the just defeated Dino Bravo. The fans at Maple Leaf Gardens were incensed. As angry as the people were, the jeers turned to rapturous cheers as Angelo Mosca and Dewey Robertson appeared on the ramp and made their way to the ring, raising their arms over their heads and soaking in the adulation of the capacity crowd. As Norm Kimber made the official announcements and introductions, Referee Terry Yorkston held the vacant Championship Title Belts high above his head. After almost three months and sixteen teams...it all came down to this. The winners would be declared the NWA International Tag Team Champions. The referee gave his instructions, the fans were on their feet and the bell rang to start the match. This was pure excitement from the word go. All four of these men are very powerful, and weigh over 250 pounds. This was not the same type of technical tag team match like we saw earlier in the night when The Terrible Two took on Weaver and Rotundo. This was a hard hitting slugfest. The moves were all high impact and power based. King Kong Mosca started off against the more powerful of the two Della Serra Brothers, Bob. The two men clubbed each other back and forth, exchanging punches and forearms and elbows. Both teams tagged in and out frequently. The Della Serra Brothers had the clear advantage when it came to teamwork, much as you would expect from a team of brothers. However, Robertson and Mosca showed great teamwork as well. The two men almost took Rocky Della Serra’s head off with a double clothesline at one point. They were also successful in executing a double suplex on Bob Della Serra, and took both men out of the ring with a double shoulder block. Although there was a brief brawl outside the ring, Terry Yorkston was very strict and made it clear to both teams that if they wanted to walk away with the title belts, the match needed to stay in the ring. There was a long period where The Della Serra Brothers managed to cut Dewey Robertson off from his partner. The brothers kept Dewey trapped in their corner and beat him senseless with a series of stomps and punches. Angelo Mosca was desperate to make the tag, and strained his arm out as the fans stomped their feet and clapped their hands, cheering him on. But for a very long time, The Della Serra Brothers had Robertson trapped. The even executed a double bodyslam and went for a cover...but Roberton kicked out at the count of two. And then it looked like it was all over. Bob Della Serra clamped the front face lock on Dewey Robertson, and Rocky began to climb to the top rope. It looked like The Della Serra Brothers were about to execute The Della Serra Driver...but the powerful Dewey Robertson was having none of that. Dewey managed to stand right up, which threw Bob Della Serra high overhead in a back body drop. Robertson knocked Rocky from his tenuous perch on the top rope with a vicious punch. As both Della Serra Brothers lay on the mat momentarily stunned, Dewey Robertson leapt across the ring...and made the tag. I have heard a lot of ovations in my time covering Maple Leaf Wrestling but very few as loud as the eruption that occurred when Angelo Mosca made the tag and charged into the ring. Mosca lived up to his King Kong nickname and went ape on The Della Serra Brothers. Mosca slammed both men, one after the other and then dragged them to their feet and bashed their heads together in a double-noggin-knocker. Mosca threw Bob out of the ring to the outside, and whipped Rocky into the ropes. Rocky rebounded right into the arms of Mosca who clamped on a bearhug. Rocky Della Serra began to thrash around, screaming in pain. And then...all of the sudden all the attention in Maple Leaf Gardens was drawn to the far end of the entrance ramp. NWA Canadian Champion Big John Studd casually climbed the steps and stood at the far end of the ramp. The Champion was wearing street clothes, and had the Championship Title slung over his shoulder. Studd pointed toward the ring at Dewey Robertson and started shouting loudly that he would “see Dewey in Hamilton.” Dewey Robertson knew that he had earned the shot at the Canadian Championship on April 11 in Hamilton, but he was not going to rise to the bait of Big John Studd and desert his partner. Referee Terry Yorkston stopped checking to see if Rocky Della Serra was going to submit to the bearhug and turned his back...shouting at Big John Studd to go back to the dressing room. Big John Studd did not leave...but somebody else showed up. Right behind Big John Studd, The Great Hossein Arab appeared, with his newly won Canadian Television Championship around his waist. As always Hossein had the Iranian flag with him, and he was proudly waving it high in the air. Unlike Studd, Hossein did not choose to hang back near the dressing room. Hossein resolutely marched down the ramp toward the ring, waving the flag and shouting at Mosca and Robertson. As soon as he saw The Great Hossein, Angelo Mosca released the bearhug...causing Rocky to collapse to the mat. Hossein stood at ringside, waving the flag and shouting at Mosca… And then The Great Hossein spat on Angelo Mosca. Mosca yelled in anger and charged out of the ring toward The Great Hossein, who quickly began to back up. As referee Terry Yorkton continued to shout at Studd and Hossein, ordering them back to the dressing room...Pretty Boy Floyd Creachman suddenly left the announcers position, and slid into the ring behind the back of the referee! Creatchman took a black object out of his pocket...clearly a blackjack...and handed it to Rocky Della Serra. Dewey Robertson saw this, and charged at Floyd Creatchman...who beat a hasty retreat out of the ring. As Robertson entered the ring, Rocky Della Serra swung with all his might and brought the backjack crashing down over the top of the head of Dewey Robertson! Della Serra quickly tossed the blackjack out of the ring to Floyd Creatchman, who quickly put it back in his pocket. Angelo Mosca turned around, and saw Dewey Robertson crumpled on the mat. Mosca stopped his pursuit of The Great Hossein (who was still backpedaling up the ramp.) Mosca was about the head back to the ring, when The Great Hossein brought the Iranian flag down across the head of Mosca, so hard the flag broke in half. Mosca collapsed in a heap on the ramp. In the ring, Bob Della Serra clamped a front facelock on the unconscious Dewey Robertson. Rocky Della Serra climbed to the top rop, took aim...and leapt off, landing his knee right into the back of the head of Dewey Robertson. Bob Della Serra drove Robertson into the mat face first. Terry Yorkston turned around to see Rocky Della Serra making the cover...and with a three count, The Della Serra Brothers became your new NWA International Tag Team Champions. Official Result: The Della Serra Brothers become the NEW NWA INTERNATIONAL TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS by defeating Angelo Mosca & Dewey Robertson via pinfall when Rocky Della Serra pins Dewey Robertson with The Della Serra Driver at 19:07 The fans were irate and pelted the ring with verbal abuse and thrown garbage. Angelo Mosca lay unconscious on the ramp, thanks to the attack by The Great Hossein. Dewey Robertson lay unconscious in the ring after the blackjack shot to the skull thanks to Floyd Creatchman, and the Della Serra Driver. Norm Kimber took the microphone in hand and was about to announce the new champions, when Pretty Boy Floyd slid back into the ring, and grabbed the microphone away. Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman: “Ladies and Gentlemen...please shut up!” The fans booed louder. Floyd Creatchman waved his client Big John Studd into the ring. Surprisingly he also waved The Great Hossein toward the ring, who gladly joined him. Floyd Creatchman happily hugged both men, and then they all embraced the new Tag Team Champions. Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman: “Ladies and Gentlemen, you all know my client...the NWA Canadian Champion, Big John Studd! Allow me to introduce my newest clients...the NWA Canadian Television Champion: The Great Hossein!” Studd and Hossein raised their championship title belts high above their heads. Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman: “And now...my two close, dear personal friends...two men who I have known for many years in Montreal! Two men who I have been secretly advising since their return to Maple Leaf Wrestling, and who I am proud to announce as not only the newest members of my organization Pretty Boy International...but as your NEW NWA INTERNATIONAL TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS! BOB AND ROCKY...THE DELLA SERRA BROTHERS!” Both Della Serra Brothers embrace Creatchman, and then theatrically hug both Studd and Hossein. Bob and Rocky joined Hossein and Studd in holding their championship title belts high in the air...and the shows comes to a close with Big John Studd, The Great Hossein Arab, and The Della Serra Brothers...all four men holding championship title belts high over their heads as Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman applauds and grins from ear to ear...while the fans in Maple Leaf Gardens continue to boo and jeer as loud as they can... I knew The Della Serra Brothers would fly under the radar, but I was having fun setting the whole thing up. LowBlowPodcast
Some good shows here for Maple Leaf - Im an interested in Bruno Jr and what he could become up here. Fuji is also a guy who has some name value. Good to see Brown and Siki together - I could see them being a big draw for your crew.

I have some interesting plans for Bruno Jr. I hope I can pull off. I don't want him to be the third wheel in the Second Generation Superstars forever, I am about to try some fun stuff which should give him a more prominent role. With Fuji, I think I want to get him away from Hossein now that Hossein is allied with Creatchman...I think I might make some roster moves and get a new partner for Fuji and set him apart a bit. I know Hossein and Fuji really were regular partners in Maple Leaf Wrestling, but Fuji was a great Tag Team talent and I think there is some fun stuff I could do with him, if I make the right moves. I am glad you like the Bad Leroy Brown/Sweet Daddy Siki pairing...I love that combination. I want to eventually give them some fun stuff to do. The Thread Killer
Maple Leaf Wrestling TV April 10, 1981 (Taped from the Brampton Civic Center in Brampton, Ontario on 04/05/81) We open to Mike McMan and Billy Red Lyons in front of the Maple Leaf Wrestling backdrop. They welcome us to another exciting edition of Maple Leaf Wrestling on CHCH TV 11. Mike McMan: “Fans before we get to the action, we want to show you a recap of what happened at the big show this past weekend at Maple Leaf Gardens.” Billy Red Lyons: “That’s right Mike. We saw The Della Serra Brothers win the tournament to be crowned as the new NWA International Tag Team Champions, but that was only half the story. The way Bob and Rocky Della Serra won those titles was controversial to say the least.” As Mike McMan and Billy Red Lyons discuss the events of last Sunday at Maple Leaf Gardens, the fans are shown still pictures of “Pretty Boy” Floyd Creatchman helping The Della Serra Brothers win the Tag Team Championships, and then joining NWA Canadian Heavyweight Champion Big John Studd and the NWA Canadian Television Champion The Great Hossein Arab in the ring. Mike McMan: “We now take you to these prerecorded comments that were filmed backstage at Maple Leaf Gardens this past Sunday night.” We are taken to a video promo. We see Big John Studd standing on the far left, with the NWA Canadian Heavyweight Championship over his shoulder. In the middle, we see the Della Serra Brothers, proudly wearing their newly won NWA International Tag Team Championships around their waists. On the far right, we see The Great Hossein Arab, wearing his newly won NWA Canadian Television Championship title around his waist. Hossein is proudly waving the flag of Iran. In the center and standing in the forefront is a grinning Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman. He is resplendent in his powder blue slacks and sequined pink blazer and he looks absolutely ecstatic. Creatchman is holding a microphone and he begins to speak... Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman: “From the moment I came to Toronto from Montreal...a real city by the way...I have been telling you ignorant fans that Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman was going to be running Maple Leaf Wrestling. I told you it was only a matter of time. Well that time has come. The time is now. Look at the talent standing in front of you. Every single champion in Maple Leaf Wrestling is managed by Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman. For months and months, I have been managing the NWA Canadian Heavyweight Champion, Big John Studd. He has been absolutely destroying every man who has been put in front of him. And that isn’t going to change.” Big John Studd: “That’s right. I’ve beat them all, and next week in Hamilton...in front of your hometown fans, you’re next on the list Dewey Robertson. You thought you pulled a fast one on me by earning this shot...when you didn’t even beat me to earn it. But that’s fine with me. These people love you so much. They think you’re such a big hero. But that’s not going to help you. Next Sunday, you go down...just another man slammed into the mat and destroyed by Big John Studd.” Pretty Boy: “When they announced this Tag Team Tournament, did I think I was just going to sit back and watch as those titles went to somebody who wasn’t managed by me? Of course I wasn’t. So I got on the phone, to two of my dearest, oldest friends. I called Vancouver, and I spoke to my good friend Rocky Della Serra. And I asked him to come to Toronto. And then I called down to Puerto Rico, and I spoke to my old friend Bob Della Serra. And I asked him to come to Toronto. You see, I’ve know these two men from years and years, during our days in Montreal. And I told them if they listened to me, that in no time, they would be wearing those Tag Team Championship Titles. And they did listen to me. And look at them now.” Rocky Della Serra: “Let me tell you something...I was happy to come and see my very close personal friend Floyd Creatchman, who has been a dear friend to my family all these years. And I was happy for a chance to work with my brother Bob again. And I knew we would win those Tag Team Titles. But you know what made me extra happy? You know what made this even better? The chance to beat up on that big, stupid dope Dino Bravo.” Bob Della Serra: “Ha Ha Ha...that’s right! Hey Dino, how’s your back? Hey Dino, see what happens to people who don’t mind their own business? Now you know. Nobody asked you to stick your stupid nose in when my brother and I were beating up Parisi and old man DeNucci. But you did. And nobody asked to hear what you thought about me and my brother representing Italy, or Canada, or Quebec or whatever...but you had to flap your big mouth...and look at you now. You’re crippled and you lost your Canadian TV Title to The Great Hossein.” The Great Hossein Arab: “That’s right. Exactly. Mr. Floyd Creepman, he come to me and he say Hossein, if you work for me I help you win the TV Champion. All you have to do is break the back of the Dino Brago. And I do it. All intelligent Canadian wrestling fan, they all see The Great Hossein put that no good Italian Canadian in the Camel Clutch and I break your back, and now Hossein is the champion! Iran, number one! Canada? Patooey! Camera man! Camera man! Zoom...zoom on Hossein!” The camera shot lingers for a moment on Floyd Creatchman grinning as all four of his clients show off their respective championship belts, as the picture fades. We return to Mike McMan and Billy Red Lyons standing in front of the Maple Leaf Wrestling logo. Mike McMan: “Strong words from Floyd Creatchman and Pretty Boy International, but you can just bet that isn’t going to sit well with quite a few people here in Maple Leaf Wrestling.” Billy Red Lyons: “That’s exactly right, Mike. And we’ll be seeing a couple of those people in action this week here on Maple Leaf Wrestling. We’ve got the number one contender to the Canadian Heavyweight Championship in action, plus we’ll be seeing King Kong Mosca. And in our Main Event this week, the young newcomer Vinnie Valentino goes up against The Executioner. Let’s go to the ring!” VS. We switch to the ring where we see Scrap Iron Sheppard in the far corner, removing his black leather vest and peculiar looking biker helmet. Norm Kimber announces Sheppard to the crowd at the Brantford Civic Centre, who give “Scrap Iron” a lukewarm reception at best. However, the crowd reaction changes when we see Dewey Robertson emerge from behind the curtain and make his way down the aisle to the ring. Dewey Robertson exchanges high fives and hand shakes with many of the people who reach out to him, and receives a rousing ovation as he is introduced by Norm Kimber. As soon as the bell rings, Dewey Robertson charges at Scrap Iron Sheppard and flattens him with a shoulder block. Robertson pulls Sheppard to his feet and then plants him back into the mat with a massive powerslam. As Robertson pulls Sheppard to his feet again, Sheppard rakes Robertson’s eyes. As Robertson backs away temporarily, Sheppard goes on the offensive. Sheppard peppers Robertson’s midsection with a barrage of punches, and as Robertson stoops over slightly, Sheppard bashes Robertson across the back of the neck with a series of sharp elbows. Dewey Robertson looks slightly staggered, so Sheppard grabs him around the wrist and tries to whip Robertson into the ropes...but Dewey Robertson is far too powerful. Robertson angrily yanks his arm back and in the process almost takes Scrap Iron Sheppard right out of his boots with a clothesline. Dewey Robertson pulls the stunned Scrap Iron Sheppard to his feet, and easily hoists Sheppard across his shoulders. With a thumbs up to the fans who are loudly cheering him on, Dewey Robertson propels himself backward with all his strength, almost crushing Scrap Iron Sheppard with a massive Samoan Drop. Robertson makes the cover and it’s an easy one, two and three! Norm Kimber: “Here is your winner: DEWEY ROBERTSON!” The fans continue to cheer as Dewey Robertson rolls out of the ring and joins Lord Athol Layton who is standing at ringside with a microphone... Lord Athol Layton: “Dewey Robertson, a very impressive win over Scrap Iron Sheppard. Dewey, you must be very excited for this Sunday night in your home town of Hamilton, where you finally get your shot at Big John Studd and the Canadian Heavyweight Championship.” Dewey Robertson: “That’s right, Lord Athol Layton. It’s finally here. It’s finally time. No more waiting. Big John Studd has been ducking me, and trying to avoid facing me like a man, one on one. Everybody saw how he distracted me and helped cost me and King Kong Mosca those Tag Team Championship belts last week in Maple Leaf Gardens. And you know why he did that? Because he’s scared. Because he knows I can beat him. That’s the same reason he hides behind that wimp Pretty Boy Creatchman. Because Big John Studd doesn’t have the courage to face me, man to man. He talks a big game and his manager talks a big game...but when it comes down to it, they both know the same thing that all these great fans know. They know what all the fans of Maple Leaf Wrestling know...that when it is finally just Dewey Robertson against Big John Studd, then I am going to take that Canadian Heavyweight Championship!” Dewey Robertson points into the camera with a deadly serious expression on his face as we go to commercial... ~COMMERCIAL BREAK~ We return to commercial to the sight of Angelo Mosca and Tim Gerrard standing in opposite corners of the ring. Norm Kimber is making the introductions and as expected, the response to Tim Gerrard is somewhat tepid at best, but the ovation for King Kong Mosca is almost deafening. It should be noted that Mosca looks exceptionally intense and almost angry...even for him. VS. Mike McMan: “We’re getting ready for our next match here, Billy and it has to be said that Angelo Mosca does not look happy this week.” Billy Red Lyons: “He sure doesn’t, Mike. Although you have to think King Kong Mosca would be overwhelmed by the amount of fan support he is getting from these people. Just a few short months ago he was one of the most hated men in Maple Leaf Wrestling, but thanks to his rescue of Dewey Robertson from the attack by The Great Hossein Arab and Mr. Fuji, the fans of Maple Leaf Wresting have really adopted Angelo Mosca as one of their own.” Mike McMan: “Speaking of The Great Hossein Billy, I think it’s a pretty safe bet to assume that it is Hossein who is responsible for that angry expression on the face of King Kong Mosca this week, considering what went down at Maple Leaf Gardens last Sunday.” As soon as the bell rings to start the match, Angelo Mosca growls in anger and barrels across the ring toward the hapless Tim Gerrard. Mosca bowls Gerrard right over and flattens him with his famous “chop block” which he made famous during his playing days in the CFL. Gerrard is rolling around on the mat holding his leg and knee in agony, but Mosca stays on the attack! Mosca starts mercilessly stomping Tim Gerrard into the mat, and then reaches down and hauls him to his feet. Mosca derisively slaps Tim Gerrard across the face, and then whips him into the ropes at full speed. As soon as Gerrard rebounds off the ropes, Mosca is right there and grabs Tim Gerrard, locking him in a Full Nelson! King Kong Mosca starts to crank the submission hold with his all his strength, as Tim Gerrard thrashing around like a helpless rag doll. You can hear Tim Gerrard screaming as the referee immediately calls for the bell. Angelo Mosca tosses Tim Gerrard aside and rolls out of the ring with a crazed expression on his face, as Norm Kimber makes it official... Norm Kimber: “Here is your winner...ANGELO “KING KONG” MOSCA!” Lord Athol Layton looks a little tentative as he approaches Angelo Mosca. Lord Athol Layton: “Quite a convincing win for you this week Mr. Mosca...” King Kong Mosca: “HOSSEIN! HOSSEIN! Did you see that?” Mosca points at the ring, where the referee is trying to revive the barely conscious Tim Gerrard. King Kong Mosca: “That’s your future, Hossein The Arab! That’s going to be you! Just a couple of months ago, I sat in the back and watched you and Mr. Fuji attack Dewey Robertson for no good reason. And even though at that time Dewey Robertson was no real friend of mine...he’s a fellow Hamilton native and an honorable man, so I decided to even the odds and help him out. And what did you do? You and Fuji attacked me and threw salt in my eyes and hit me with your flag of Iran while I was down. But we came back at you, and in Maple Leaf Gardens we beat you like dogs...so you cheated again. You threw salt at us again. But we were patient. We knew your time would come. And then in Hamilton last month, me and Dewey we finally got you where we wanted you...and we beat you right in the middle of that ring, in front of our people. One, two, three. And that must have really gotten under your skin, eh Hossein? First you hide behind those two goons The Della Serra Brothers...and don’t think for a moment I’m finished with them, by the way...and then you cheat Dino Bravo out of his Television Championship. And you brag about it, and act like you won it fair and square, when all these people saw what you all did, and they know the truth. You stole that belt. And now you hire that scrawny little loudmouth geek, Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman. And you decide to get your revenge. Every fan of Maple Leaf Wrestling saw you come out there in Maple Leaf Gardens last Sunday. You hit me over the head with that flag of Iran...and you robbed me and Dewey of the chance to become the new Tag Team Champions. Well guess what, Hossein? You just made the biggest mistake you could ever make in your life. Nobody, and I mean nobody does that to King Kong Mosca. I won’t stand for it. The people won’t stand for it. You think you’re going to be the Canadian Television Champion? I don’t think so. You’re on notice, Hossein. You, and that skinny little loudmouth manager of yours. And if that big goon John Studd gets in my way, or if those lousy, no good Della Serra Brothers try and get in my way? I’ll smash them, just like I’m going to smash you. I’m coming for you. I’m gonna break your neck. I’m going to take that Canadian Television Championship. And then as an added bonus, for all these people...for every time you’ve insulted this country, and spat at us? I’m going to take that precious flag you love so much, and I’m going to roll it up and I’m on going to stick it...you know where!” King Mosca glares at the commercial for one last moment and walks away, leaving Lord Athol Layton stunned and speechless, as we go to commercial... ~COMMERCIAL BREAK~ We come back to the ring to see the handsome young newcomer Vinnie Valentino in the ring, standing across from the masked Executioner. Norm Kimber makes the introductions, and it’s no surprise that Vinnie Valentino gets a rousing reception, especially from the ladies in attendance. VS. Mike McMan: “It’s time for our Main Event for this week, Billy.” Billy Red Lyons: “That’s right Mike, we’re going to be getting one of our first looks at the popular and handsome young newcomer Mr. Vinnie Valentino. Before we check out this match though, I want to mention that next week we’ll be hearing from Dino Bravo and seeing him in action, if he’s recovered enough from that attack last week.” Mike McMan: “We all saw what The Della Serra Brothers did to Dino Bravo right here on Maple Leaf Wrestling last week, and then of course they followed it up with another cowardly attack this past Sunday at Maple Leaf Gardens, and basically cost Dino the Canadian Television Championship by attacking him before his defense against The Great Hossein.” Billy Red Lyons: “We hope Dino Bravo will have sufficiently recovered from his injuries by next week, but in the meantime it will be great to get a look at this exciting rookie we’ve been hearing so much about, Vinnie Valentino! Vinnie made his debut here in Maple Leaf Wrestling late last month, and he’s been making waves. He has already endeared himself to the fans, especially our great Italian-Canadian fans, and maybe even more to the young ladies.” Mike McMan: “Of course, Vinnie is in for a tough one here today...he’s facing the masked Executioner. We don’t know too much about this man, but we know he has scored some impressive wins over the past couple of weeks at our exciting shows across Ontario.” Vinnie Valentino starts the match off by locking up with The Executioner, but the muscular young man easily wins the power struggle and shoves the masked man back to the mat. As soon as The Executioner starts to stand up, Valentino sends him reeling with a beautiful high dropkick, which brings the fans out of their seats. Valentino follows up with not one but two deep arm drags...and The Executioner is reeling and not happy at all. Suddenly, we see the fans looking towards the dressing room area. The camera angle switches, and we see none other than The Destroyer walking down the aisle. The Destroyer is wearing his famous mask of course, but is otherwise resplendent in an expensive looking suit. The Destroyer calmly strolls to the ring, and stands near the apron, casually watching the match. Mike McMan: “What on earth is The Destroyer doing out here? He’s not scheduled to be here!” Billy Red Lyons: “I’m not sure, Mike. He certainly seems interested in this match...although I’m not sure if he’s here for The Executioner, or Vinnie Valentino, or for some other reason.” Vinnie Valentino stops his assault on The Executioner for a brief moment, and looks out at The Destroyer with a wary expression on his face. Valentino waves his arm at The Destroyer, as if he is telling him to go away. The Executioner struggles to his feet, but Valentino stays on him and locks him in a front face lock while he keeps his eyes on The Destroyer. Suddenly, the camera switches back to curtain again. Now, we see two more masked men emerge from the dressing room and start to make their way down the aisle. It is none other than The Grappler...and his partner Grappler #2. We have seen Grappler #2 recently in Maple Leaf Wrestling, but this is the first time we have seen his partner in person. The masked Tag Team are decked out in identical ring gear, all black with gold masks. The Grappler is slightly taller, and is walking with a cane...although it does not appear he needs it due to any injury. The fans are becoming eerily silent as The Grapplers slowly make their way to the ring. The Grappler takes up a position on another side of the ring, opposite The Destroyer. Grappler #2 takes up position on the far side...so now the ring is surrounded on three sides by The Destroyer, The Grappler and Grappler #2. Mike McMan: “Billy Red Lyons...what on earth is going on here? We’ve got a masked man in the ring, as Vinnie Valentino is trying to have a wrestling match with The Executioner...but now the ring is surrounded on three sides by three other masked men...The Destroyer and now The Grapplers!” Billy Red Lyons: “I have no idea what is happening here, Mike. But I get the feeling that it is not good for Vinnie Valentino.” Vinnie Valentino still has The Executioner locked up in a front face lock...but now he is looking very concerned as he surrounded on three sides by The Destroyer and The Grapplers. As Valentino tries to keep his focus split between the man he is wrestling and the three men outside the ring, the camera goes to the aisle yet again! The curtains part, and now we see yet another masked figure appear. This man is wearing a black three-piece suit, and a familiar yellow mask. He slowly ambles to the ringside area, and takes up position on the one remaining side of the ring that was not occupied by a masked wrestler. Vinnie Valentino is now wrestling The Executioner, but the ring is surrounded on all four sides by masked men. And we know who this latest man is... Mike McMan: “That’s The Assassin! The Assassin is here!” Billy Red Lyons: “We’ve seen The Assassin before here in Maple Leaf Wrestling...but for the life of me I can’t figure out what is going on here! There are no less than five masked men here, and poor Vinnie Valentino is surrounded on all sides by masked men!” There are some scattered boos and jeers from the fans in attendance, but it is actually strangely quiet...it is as if nobody knows what to make of the strange sight they are seeing. Vinnie Valentino releases The Executioner from the front face lock. He stands up and starts to nervously look around himself. Valentino knows he is trapped and does not know what to do. The referee starts to point at The Destroyer, The Grapplers and now The Assassin...the ref shouts at them to leave the ringside area but they totally ignore him. The Destroyer and The Grapplers have been looking at The Assassin ever since he showed up...as if they are waiting for some sort of signal. The Assassin slowly nods...and suddenly The Destroyer and The Grapplers roll in the ring...and attack Vinnie Valentino! The referee is roughly shoved aside, as The Executioner comes to his feet and together with The Destroyer and The Grapplers, all four men knock Vinnie Valentino to the mat and began stomping him in a gang style beating. The fans come out of their daze and start booing and jeering loudly. The referee flees the ring and shouts at the timekeeper, who starts to ring the bell repeatedly. The Assassin starts to pace around outside the ring, pointing and shouting orders as The Executioner, The Destroyer and The Grapplers mercilessly stomp on the helpless Vinnie Valentino. Mike McMan: “This is chaos! Total anarchy has broken out here this week on Maple Leaf Wrestling! The Executioner, The Destroyer and The Grapplers are basically mugging poor Vinnie Valentino while The Assassin looks on and gives directions!” Billy Red Lyons: “The timekeeper is ringing the bell, but the referees or even security aren’t going to want to go in there and try and break this up...not with that many men attacking! Wait Mike...here comes some help!” The fans cheer as Salvatore Bellomo and Nick DeCarlo charge down the aisle and slide into the ring. Unfortunately, The Grapplers are warned by a shout from The Assassin, and they are ready as soon as DeCarlo and Bellomo hit the ring. The minute Vinnie Valentino’s friends slide under the rope, The Grapplers start stomping away on them too...while The Destroyer and The Executioner continue to stomp on Valentino. The Assassin slowly climbs into the ring. The Grappler hands The Assassin his cane, and The Assassin starts to methodically drive the butt of the cane into the throats of Vinnie Valentino, Nick DeCarlo and Sal Bellomo. The Executioner and The Destroyer haul each man to their feet and hold him in place, as The Assassin takes turn smashing each man over the head with the cane. Finally, all three men are laying in a heap in the middle of the ring...motionless. Mike McMan: “Billy Red Lyons...this is a vicious assault. I don’t ever remember seeing anything like this before in Maple Leaf Wrestling.” Billy Red Lyons: “Neither do I, and I don’t know why these men are doing this or what...wait...wait a minute...The Assassin has Norm Kimber’s microphone.” The Executioner, The Destroyer, The Grapplers and The Assassin have all formed a line in the ring, and they are standing over the prone and lifeless bodies of Valentino, DeCarlo and Bellomo. The Assassin does indeed have the microphone, and he slowly raises it and begins to speak in a calm, clear voice. Once again, the fans fall mostly silent. The Assassin: “Any supposedly intelligent Pro Wrestling fan already knows who I am. I am The Assassin. And of course...you already know the sensational, intelligent Destroyer. You are familiar with our colleague The Executioner...and these of course are The Grapplers...the greatest masked...or unmasked...Tag Team in all of Professional Wrestling. Let’s talk about that word for a moment.... Masked. The idea of a man wearing a mask inside the world of Professional Wrestling has almost become a source of mockery for some people. A cliche. Some people can’t understand why a man would choose to wear a mask inside the ring. They make jokes about it. Compare it to a Halloween costume. And that is not unusual. Unintelligent people...much like you fans...frequently mock things they don’t understand. Let’s forget about the rich historical and cultural tradition and the role of the mask within Professional Wrestling. Set that whole aspect aside...because you people are clearly too stupid to know anything about something like that. Knowing about history and other cultures would involve picking up a book...and all Canadian Wrestling fans care about is drinking beer, watching hockey and driving snowmobiles. Why else would a man wear a mask? To remain hidden. To be anonymous. Think about it. None of you people know who we are. For all you know, one of us could have been standing next to you in line at the concession stand, or even sat next to you on the bus this morning. You wouldn’t know. Of course...we probably wouldn’t do something like that, because those kinds of activities are for low class slobs like yourselves...but the point is, any one of us could have done that. And you’d never know. And I’m not just talking about you people out here. I’m not addressing the fans here in Maple Leaf Wrestling. Trust me, there are plenty of people backstage who have no idea who we really are...or what we really look like. And that is an advantage. We could be overhearing your conversations. We could be privy to your plans, goals and aspirations. We might be standing next to you, or walking among you...and you wouldn’t know. What about fear? When a man walks into a bank to commit a robbery, when a prowler breaks into a home to commit a burglary, what does he wear? A mask. Why? To avoid detection? Yes. But there is a psychological component as well. The man in the mask strikes fear. And so will we. We are not here to be the butt of your jokes. We are walking among you, and we will strike fear in each and every one of you people, and in each and every man backstage here tonight, and throughout every locker room in all of Maple Leaf Wrestling and the entire Pro Wrestling world. We are five strong. Myself, The Destroyer, The Grapplers and The Executioner. We are the most powerful group of Professional Wrestlers in Maple Leaf Wrestling as of this moment. First we will strike fear. Then we will take control...and there is nothing anybody can do about it. Not you fans. Not Frank Tunney. Not any man in that Locker Room. If you are not one of the men with a mask standing in this ring right now...then you are officially on notice. We are aware that Floyd Creatchman recently formed a powerful group of talent and now controls every single Championship in Maple Leaf Wrestling. And that’s fine. For now. First we will strike fear. Then we will establish control. Then we will take the power, and it doesn’t matter who has that power. As of this moment, the balance of power and the balance of terror in Maple Leaf Wrestling has shifted, and nobody will stand in our way. We are the Assassins Alliance. And we are going to change Maple Leaf Wrestling forever." The shows silently ends with all five men in the ring, standing over their victims... The Iron Sheik started listing off all the WWF talent he was going to beat and started challenging everybody. I remember it vividly. He started with: - The Superman Snuka - The JVD (I can only assume he was referring to JYD but with The Iron Sheik you never know) -Greg "ahamma" Valentine And my personal all time favorite...Brutus Briefcase. I died laughing. From that date forward, Brutus Beefcake permanently became "Brutus Briefcase" to me and all my friends who watched wrestling. To this day, if we are talking about Pro Wrestling and Beefcake comes up, we still refer to him as The Brutus Briefcase.
The Thread Killer
Maple Leaf Wrestling Arena Show - North Wentworth Community Arena Hamilton, Ontario April 11, 1981 Paid Attendance: 4,500 (Sold Out) * * * * * Maple Leaf Wrestling returned to Hamilton on Sunday April 11, with a packed card featuring three big title matches. The Main Event of this show of course featured hometown favourite Dewey Robertson finally getting his shot at the NWA Canadian Heavyweight Champion, Big John Studd. In anticipation of this huge match and featuring several other highly anticipated bouts, the event was a complete Sell Out with standing room only by bell time. 1) Scott McGhee & George Wells vs. Scrap Iron Sheppard & Tim Gerrard Scott McGhee is a recently addition to the roster of Maple Leaf Wrestling and has been flying under the radar since his arrival. McGhee has not yet appeared on Maple Leaf Wrestling Television, nor has he appeared at Maple Leaf Gardens. What he has been doing though...is winning matches. Since showing up in Maple Leaf Wrestling, McGhee is undefeated and holds impressive victories already over Duke Myers, Bobby Bass and Moose Morowski. On top of that, McGhee has teamed with George Wells on a couple of occasions and the duo has already managed to secure a win over The Kelly Twins, which is no small accomplishment. McGhee is an Englishman who has made some waves in Florida and several appearances in Calgary as well. Whether it is as a singles performer or teaming with Big George, it seems like it will only be a matter of time until Scott McGhee makes a major impact in Maple Leaf Wrestling. This match was a fun opener and a dominant performance by McGhee and Wells. Scrap Iron Sheppard managed to give Wells a bit of trouble with some questionable tactics like an eye rake and attempted low blow, but the combination of the power of George Wells and the speed an athleticism of Scott McGhee was too much for Sheppard and Gerrard. The end came when George Wells flattened Tim Gerrard with his patented shoulder tackle to the midsection, followed by a breathtaking flying elbow smash from the top rope from Scott McGhee. Official Result: Scott McGhee & George Wells defeated Scrap Iron Sheppard & Tim Gerrard at 6:27 when McGhee pinned Gerrard following a top rope elbow drop. 2) The Assassins Alliance vs. Vinnie Valentino, Nick DeCarlo & Salvatore Bellomo The Assassins Alliance was represented during this match by the combination of The Grapplers and The Destroyer. The Assassin was at ringside acting as Manager, and The Executioner was also in the corner of his new teammates. By now of course, most Maple Leaf Wrestling fans have seen the shocking events of the most recent episode of Maple Leaf Wrestling Television on Channel 11. The Executioner was having a match with Vinnie Valentino when The Grapplers, The Destroyer and The Assassin surrounded the ring and attacked Vinnie Valentino with no provocation whatsoever. This Six Man Tag Match took place on the heels of that attack, so tensions were high during this match. The fans in Hamilton had obviously seen the attack by The Assassins Alliance because the reaction to the masked men was quite hostile. This was a very exciting Six Man Tag Match. Vinnie Valentino is quite a flamboyant high flyer and he had the fans coming out of their seats with a series of stunning dropkicks and even a theatrical back flip. The Grapplers and The Destroyer are all accomplished mat wrestlers and skilled technicians who did an excellent job of slowing the pace down and grounding the high flyer. The masked men managed to isolate the charismatic Nick DeCarlo at one point and cut him off from his teammates. After torturing DeCarlo with a long series of leg holds and twists and submission attempts, DeCarlo was finally able to scramble to his corner thanks to Vinnie Valentino breaking up an attempted cover. DeCarlo tagged in Salvatore Bellomo, who did his best but ended up falling to The Grappler after a big boot to the face. It appeared that The Assassin may have discreetly slid some sort of object into the ring and The Grappler loaded his boot up prior, but the referee did not see it. Official Result: The Grapplers & The Destroyer defeated Vinnie Valentino, Nick DeCarlo & Salvatore Bellomo at 9:13 when The Grappler pinned Bellomo following a boot to the face. After the match, The Assassin and The Executioner slid into the ring and joined The Grapplers and The Destroyer in a 5 on 3 beating on Valentino, DeCarlo and Bellomo. The situation may have gotten out of hand and become much worse, but fortunately Bruno Sammartino Jr. and Tony "Cannonball" Parisi. When the odds were even, The Assassins Alliance beat a hasty retreat and the five fan favourites took the centre of the ring and held their arms high, to the cheers of the crowd. 3) Iron Mike Sharpe vs. Kelly Kiniski (with Whipper Watson Jr.) A show in Hamilton just wouldn't be complete without an appearance from "Canada's Greatest Athlete" himself...the bombastic Hamilton native, Iron Mike Sharpe. As always, even though he is clearly considered a villain everywhere else he goes, Iron Mike returned to Hamilton to a hero's welcome. And as always, Iron Mike Sharpe seemed a bit puzzled and taken aback by the fact the fans were loudly cheering him when he was conducting himself in a manner which normally results in him being roundly booed. As per usual, Iron Mike Sharpe commandeered the house microphone and insisted he be announced as "Canada's Greatest Athlete" which resulted in the first of many cheers from the sold out crowd. Poor Kelly Kiniski is not used to sharing the adulation of the crowd with his opponent, but he managed to be a good sport about it...for the most part. Kiniski is one of the smoothest, most underrated technical wrestlers in Maple Leaf Wrestling. Since he has been wrestling mostly Tag Team matches with his partner Whipper Watson Jr. and embroiled in the ongoing rivalry with Moose Morowski and The Kelly Twins, the fans may not have noticed how highly skilled Kiniski is...but this was a rare singles performance for him and he managed to make the most of it. Kiniski expertly took Sharpe down with a hip toss into a side headlock which of course brought the legendary verbal skills of Iron Mike Sharpe into full display. Kiniski pretty much exerted his will on Sharpe on the mat, while Sharpe bellowed in frustration. Eventually Sharpe battled his way to his feet, and as good as Kiniski is, he was not going to win a slugfest with Iron Mike Sharpe. The tide really turned in the favour of Iron Mike Sharpe when Kelly Kiniski missed a flying body press from the top rope. After that, Sharpe maintained his advantage with a series of stomps and forearm smashes and Iron Mike Sharpe definitely had Kiniski on the defensive. It was then Iron Mike Sharpe began to subtly adjust his infamous black leather forearm brace...and it became clear that he was "loading it up" for his patented forearm shot. At this point, Kiniski's partner Whipper Watson Jr. became highly agitated on the outside of the ring. It was clear Kiniski and Watson had closely studied Sharpe and knew what was coming. Whipper Watson Jr. jumped on the ring apron and began to remonstrate the referee, ordering him to check Sharpe's brace. Unfortunately, Iron Mike Sharpe used this distraction to his advantage. While the referee was arguing with Watson, Iron Mike Sharpe levelled Kelly Kiniski with a loaded forearm shot to the top of the head, and as Kiniski stumbled around stunned from the blow....Iron Mike Sharpe climbed to the second turnbuckle, measured Kelly Kiniski off and smashed him over the head a second time with the loaded forearm shot. Watson jumped back down to the floor but by that point it was too late. Official Result: Iron Mike Sharpe defeated Kelly Kiniski via pinfall at 7:17 with a forearm smash to the head from the second rope. The fans gave Iron Mike a rousing cheer after his victory which left him looking slightly baffled. Although Sharpe is a solid professional, this victory could be viewed as an upset. Maybe it's just me and I might be reading too much into it, but it seemed that once he had regained his senses Kelly Kiniski looked somewhat annoyed with Whipper Watson Jr. for distracting the referee and possibly even costing him the match. Regardless, the two Second Generation Superstars made their way back to the dressing room together, so all appears to be well. 4) The Della Serra Brothers (with Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman) vs. Tony "Cannonball" Parisi & Bruno Sammartino Jr. This match was a non-title affair and the NWA International Tag Team Championships were not on the line during this contest. This is one of the first times Tony Parisi and Bruno Jr. have teamed up, and the theme of this match was not championships, it was revenge...plain and simple. As you doubtless remember, last month The Della Serra Brothers seriously injured Tony "Cannonball" Parisi when they defeated Parisi and Dominic DeNucci in the Quarterfinals of the NWA International Tag Team Championship Tournament. That attack was deliberate and brutal, and continued after the match was already over. The repeated blows to the head and neck of Tony Parisi from The Della Serra Brothers put Parisi out of action for over a month...so tonight he was out for revenge and he had the son of Bruno Sammartino with him for backup. It is well known that Tony Parisi is an old friend of the legendary Bruno Sammartino, so it made perfect sense for Bruno's son to provide backup to his father's old friend. This match got off to a hot start, with Tony Parisi obviously in the mood for revenge. Parisi took a run at both brothers and landed a couple of nice dropkicks, following up with a series of punches and kicks. With Bruno Jr.'s help, Parisi actually managed to clear the ring. Once the referee restored order and the match settled down, the clear advantage went to The Della Serra Brothers. This is one of the first times Tony Parisi and Bruno Jr. have worked as a team, and they are not brothers...so The Della Serra Brothers obviously had the upper hand when it came to teamwork. Bob and Rocky also had the upper hand when it came to bending and breaking the rules, as these two men have perfected the art of distracting the referee to gain an unfair advantage. There were several times during this match that one brother would enter the ring illegally, and while the referee was ordering the man back to his corner, the legal man would resort to an unfair tactic like a choke hold. At one point, The Della Serra Brothers got the upper hand on Bruno Jr. and moved in and out using quick tags, stunning the youngster with a series of knee drops and a double atomic drop. Eventually, Bruno managed to duck a double clothesline attempt from The Della Serra Brothers, and made the diving tag. Tony "Cannonball" Parisi came in like the proverbial house on fire, and sent Bob Della Serra over the top rope with a clothesline. Parisi planted Rocky into the mat with three successive body slams, and then climbed to the top rope, setting him up for his famous "Cannonball" manoeuvre...at which point, Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman leapt to the apron and pushed Parisi to the mat, right in front of the referee. There was no choice but to call for the disqualification. As you can imagine, the fans were not pleased. Parisi rolled out of the ring and grabbed a chair, chasing Creatchman and both Della Serra Brothers up the aisle...but Cannonball was denied his revenge tonight. Official Result: Bruno Sammartino Jr. & Tony "Cannonball" Parisi defeated The Della Serra Brothers by Disqualification at 14:22 when Floyd Creatchman interfered in the match. Considering the fact that Sammartino Jr. and Parisi appeared earlier in the evening to provide backup to Vinnie Valentino, Nick DeCarlo and Sal Bellomo, and that they now hold a DQ victory over the Tag Team Champions...you have to wonder what future Bruno Sammartino Jr. has with The Second Generation Superstars...and if a Tag Team Title match might be in the future for Sammartino Jr. and Parisi. 5) King Kong Mosca vs. Moose Morowski As loud as the ovation was for Hamilton's own Iron Mike Sharpe earlier in this show, you can double it and then some when the fans saw the man they call "King Kong." Angelo Mosca's hometown crowd did not let him down, and the Pro Football Legend turned Pro Wrestler received a thunderous ovation when he squared off with Moose Morowski. There was nothing fancy about this match, this was just a good old fashioned brawl between two big 300 pound men trying to exert their will on one another. Normally Mosca has the size, strength and aggression advantage but that was not the case here. Moose was able to pretty much match King Kong in all categories. Proof of that can be seen in the fact that Mosca tried to slap on his Sleeper Hold, but Moose Morowski gamely fought it off. Mosca then went for his Full Nelson, but he was unable to hold Morowski in place long enough to clamp that on, as well. The end finally came when Morowski gained a temporary advantage with a series of rapid fire punches to the breadbasket of Mosca, but then he went too far and tried to climb to the second turnbuckle and come off with a double axehandle smash across the back of Mosca. Angelo Mosca recovered too quickly for Moose Morowski to execute his plan, and managed to grab Moose as he was coming off the ropes, using the momentum for perfect swinging powerslam. That knocked enough wind out of Moose Morowski temporarily to give King Kong the advantage long enough to score the win. Official Result: Angelo "King Kong" Mosca defeated Moose Morowski at 5:17 with a powerslam 6) NWA Canadian Television Championship Match: The Great Hossein Arab (c) (with Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman) vs. Johnny Weaver The Great Hossein was definitely in tough for his first defense of his newly won Canadian TV Title. Promoter Frank Tunney selected the wily veteran Johnny "Buzzsaw" Weaver as Hossein's first opponent. Weaver is no stranger to high profile matches and he is no stranger to winning championships, either. As is now standard practice, The Great Hossein started this contest by taking the house microphone from Norm Kimber and berating the crowd, reminded them that Iran was number one, and Canada was...not. This went over with the fans in Hamilton about as well as you would expect. This match was somewhat of a polar opposite of the match which came before it...where Mosca vs. Morowski was a back and forth brawl, this match was a tightly contested scientific Pro Wrestling chess match. Due to his nefarious tactics and bombastic personality, it is easy to forget that The Great Hossein is actually a former medallist in amateur Greco-Roman wrestling. This match started off slowly, with both men trying to take the other to the mat. There were a series of impressive throws and recoveries, and a series of brilliant suplexes on Johnny Weaver by The Great Hossein. Weaver eventually decided to abandon his mat based strategy...perhaps feeling he had found his equal in that department...and instead focused on trying to slap on his famous Sleeper Hold. After an extended sequences of go behind waist locks and reversals, Johnny Weaver actually had The Great Hossein bent over, near the ropes and in a position to have the Sleeper slapped on...and that is when Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman made his presence felt. Creatchman surreptitiously rolled up Hossein's Iranian flag and quickly jabbed it through the ropes into Weaver's midsection. Weaver doubled over, which gave The Great Hossein a perfect chance to execute a belly-to-back suplex, and put the helpless Johnny Weaver in position for the Camel Clutch...from which there seems to be no escape. Official Result: The Great Hossein Arab successfully defended his NWA Canadian Television Championship by submitted Johnny Weaver with the Camel Clutch at 12:52 This was the second time tonight that Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman had interfered in a match. First he pushed Tony "Cannonball" Parisi from the top rope during the Tag Team Match with The Della Serra Brothers...and now he had poked Johnny Weaver in the throat with the flagpole. The fans were irate, booing, jeering and even throwing trash as Creatchman tried to lead Hossein up the aisle. However, the fans soon changed their tune as King Kong Mosca stormed down the aisle and laid waste to both Hossein and Creatchman. To the deafening cheers of the fans, Mosca clotheslined both Creatchman and Hossein on the floor...and then as the people continued to go crazy, Mosca snapped the Iranian flag in half and proceeded to choke Hossein with it. Eventually a herd of security personnel and referees managed to break up the melee, as Creatchman and Hossein fled the scene. THE MAIN EVENT For the NWA Canadian Heavyweight Championship Big John Studd (c) vs. Dewey Robertson Studd is managed by Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman, of course...but due to the beating Creatchman had just taken at the hands of King Kong Mosca during the fallout of the previous match, Big John Studd came to the ring alone. Dewey Robertson came to the ring to one of the loudest ovations I have ever heard. The fans in Hamilton love their hometown boy, and this unassuming strongman loves them back. Norm Kimber made the introductions, the lights went down and the two powerhouses locked up. The atmosphere was electric. This match was somewhat similar to many other Big John Studd title defenses. Studd's matches are generally not long, and they are usually not technical exhibitions like the match we just saw between Weaver and Hossein. The general strategy during a Big John Studd title defense is that the opponent spends the entire match trying unsuccessfully to knock the Canadian Champion off his feet...and it is very rare that ever happens. Sweet Daddy Siki was able to knock the giant down a couple of months ago in Ottawa thanks to his famous headbutts and a beautiful dropkick...but usually the Canadian Champion stays firmly on his feet. Of course...Big John Studd usually has the power advantage and that may not have been the case here...which is a very rare occurrence. Dewey took a run at Studd and hit him with everything he had. Robertson rebounded off the ropes and hit a shoulderblock right into Studd's chest...but he could not knock him down. Studd actually mocked Robertson, and dared him to try again...which Dewey did, with then same results. Robertson tried clotheslines, and Studd was rocked a bit...but he would not go down. After trying several times to knock Big John Studd off his feet, Dewey Robertson bounced off the ropes and was set to try again, when Studd stopped Robertson short and locked the big man up in a punishing bearhug right in the middle of the ring. Big John Studd kept Dewey Robertson locked up in the middle of the ring for several long minutes, as the fans stomped their feet and clapped their hands in unison, trying to encourage their hometown hero to victory. The referee held Robertson's arm up and it dropped once, twice...and just before it fell the third time Dewey Robertson managed to keep his arm aloft, and broke the bearhug with a desperate punch to the face. However, Studd stayed on the offensive and draped Robertson throat first across the top rope. Studd then used his own massive leg to drive Robertson's throat across the rope...and just held him there. It was only when the referee made the five count and threatened Studd with disqualification that the Champion let Robertson up. Big John Studd grabbed Dewey Robertson by the arm and flung him into the ropes, and attempted to nail Robertson with a big boot to the face...but Dewey ducked. Robertson rebounded, leapt into the air and hit Studd right in the chest with a flying shoulder tackle. Studd did not go down...but he was rocked. As the fans went crazy, Dewey Robertson went to work on Big John Studd, battering him with a series of double axehandle smashes to the torso and midsection. Big John Studd actually doubled over, and then Dewey Robertson did something very few men have ever done...he reached down, scooped Big John Studd up...and slammed him, right in the middle of the ring. The roof blew off the North Wentworth Arena as Dewey Robertson bodyslammed Big John Studd. Robertson dropped an elbow smash across the Champion's chest for good measure and then made the cover. The referee went down to make the count...and suddenly out of nowhere Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman sprinted down the aisle (looking the worse for wear after being clotheslined by King Kong Mosca earlier) and slid into the ring. Just as the referee's hand was coming down for the count of three as the fans counted along, Floyd Creatchman jumped into the air and dropped an elbow across the back of the referee, breaking the count. The bell immediately rang, and there was mass confusion. Some fans thought referee Terry Yorkston had completed the three count before Floyd Creatchman attacked him...but Yorkston crawled to the ropes and shouted at Norm Kimber, who announced that Big John Studd had been disqualified due to outside interference. Dewey Robertson was declared the winner as a result of the disqualification, but as we all know (and as Norm Kimber reminded the fans) the Championship can not change hands as a result of a disqualification. Official Result: Dewey Robertson defeated Big John Studd via Disqualification at 5:07 due to the interference of Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman. The fans had seen enough. First Creatchman had pushed Tony "Cannonball" Parisi from the top rope, costing him the victory against The Della Serra Brothers. Then he had jabbed Johnny Weaver in the throat, causing him to lose to The Great Hossein. And now...he had broken up the count and cost their hometown hero his chance to become the NWA Canadian Heavyweight Champion, after Dewey Robertson had managed to actually bodyslam Big John Studd in the middle of the ring. The boos and jeers were overwhelming, and trash was thrown from all sides...pelting the ring, Studd and Creatchman. Norm Kimber got on the house microphone and made a desperate plea for calm, begging the fans to return to their seats and stop throwing garbage at the ring. And then the fans started to come over the barricades, trying to get their hands on Pretty Boy Floyd Creatchman. The bell was rung repeatedly, and a crowd of referees, security personnel and backstage officials all charged down to the ringside area to try and maintain order. But the fans kept coming. Finally, several police officers ended up rushing to the ring and cuffing a few of the more hostile fans. Studd and Creatchman were escorted back up the aisle by a crowd of officials, as the fans continued to hurl abuse and debris at them. The house lights went up to end the show, but it remains to be seen what the fallout will be from this historic event.

LowBlowPodcast
I can tell you put a lot into your pre and post production for these shows and you've got a great flow with everything. I do appreciate the change of color for text to show the winners and such. I have to say that I was pulling for Studd... he is still my low-key MVP for this game. I am still excited to see where a guy like Dino Bravo fits in the scheme along with Siki, Leroy, and Mulligan. I also love the movement of The Iron Sheik...or Mr. Hossein... you've definitely got an identity with this promotion that sets you apart from everyone else.
