What he's able to do in the ring feels akin to what Rey was doing in the mid-90's. An excellent babyface but has also played a decent heel when called upon, primarily with Death Triangle. Just an all around awesome singles, tag, and spotfest worker."
bennyowens Posted April 18, 2021 Posted April 18, 2021 The WALTER match was a revelation for me in the building, as good as I've seen him perform as an underdog. Definitely someone who I want to dig more into and do some rewatches as when he hits with me he hits big, but I also feel like I've seen a lot of matches where the wheels rapidly come off.
Chakazard Posted April 18, 2021 Posted April 18, 2021 Grave Consequences vs. Mil Muertes should be required viewing
strobogo Posted April 18, 2021 Posted April 18, 2021 Fenix gets a lot of Rey comparisons and I fully understand that, but he reminds me more of Blitzkrieg where he's purely about doing some crazy shit and showing off his physical abilities and everything else is secondary if it exists in a match at all. Rey even in his physical prime where he could do anything he wanted was much better about weaving in his spots and and selling, where as Fenix is just WANNA SEE SOME AWESOME SHIT HERE I GO no matter what is going on in a match prior or after. Which definitely has its place and there isn't a guy currently in wrestling that makes me hit the Titus.gif in real life pretty much every time I see him, and that's pretty rad. However, I haven't really seen him do much more than that, and I don't feel like AEW or at least his position in AEW really is going to require that of him anytime soon.
Boss Rock Posted April 18, 2021 Posted April 18, 2021 The aforementioned Grave Consequences match is a great example of Fenix in storytelling mode.
SegundaCuerda Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 I liked Fenix a lot but as time pases he is becoming more of a guy who displays an amazing athletic power and a lot of OMG HOW HE DID THAT but with less storytelling. His match against Low Ki in MLW is worth watching, I find it even better than the Mil Muertes one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6OSaphQ5SU Also, he had a match against Daga in AAA which I think is a good example of a match full of .gif moments but also it inmerses me in what's happening in the match, who will win, etc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T43FqXePF1w
Ma Stump Puller Posted October 28, 2022 Posted October 28, 2022 Yeah Fenix is a amazing spot-guy where he just blows your mind with really astonishing dives and flips, but his on/off selling and immensely inconsistent....well, everything else makes him a tricky case that wouldn't have a spot in my 100. Doesn't help he keeps getting slotted in with guys who aren't really interested in dragging that out of him.
HeadCheese Posted Monday at 11:59 PM Posted Monday at 11:59 PM Maybe the best wrestler at mixing mind-blowing high flying emotional core face/that feels earnest work in the 2000s and one of the best wrestlers of the 2010s. . His Lucha Underground, AAA, and indie stuff is very fun. I think the Lucha Brothers are a fun team especially on the indies and PWG (specifically vs. Ricochet and Matt Sydal vs. Young Bucks), it didn't work as well in AEW (their charismas and the matches each excel at are often opposed especially with Alex Abrahantes (who wasn't bad nesssarily but, personality clash). Highly recommend the 2019, Nick Jackson vs. Rey Fenix match, his match vs. Kenny Omega is fun too. I haven't much of his WWE work but, hope he does well, he feels like a wrestler who I dont get is not one of the biggest stars in wrestling. Here's the WALTER match.
Boss Rock Posted Tuesday at 12:14 AM Posted Tuesday at 12:14 AM The first Grave Consequences is still a favorite match of mine.
Tetsujin Posted Wednesday at 10:47 AM Posted Wednesday at 10:47 AM I mever liked him as much as others, I don't really dig his overchoreographed style for some of his signature spots, that require his opponent to stay there watching him do the thing and waiting for him. Once you notice it, you can never unsee it, and it always ruins my inmersion. Other than that, yeah, he's athletic, he's charismatic, and sometimes he knows how to sell to gain sympathy. I'm currently rewatching Lucha Underground (still on seasons 1, now towards the end) and he's not giving me the vives of one of the very best on the roster like he did ten years ago, but yeah the Graves Consequences remains untouchable. It's more of a Mil Muertes absolutely stellar performance, but Fénix plays his role better than ever.
