sek69
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Triplemania, AAA is doing three shows this year with the Triplemania name with the first one being this Saturday. As part of that, they are doing a DEATH ROULETTE tournament where legends of lucha are putting their masks on the line. A lot of this will be old dudes wrestling each other, but it will likely be a huge draw since there will be a ton of famous names involved. There will be the usual Marvel inspired matches and the Copa Triplemania match, but I don't think either of those will be shown on the PPV. They will likely show up on AAA's YouTube channel a few weeks later. The Lineup: Main Event Fenix/El Hijo del Vikingo vs The Young Bucks - Vikingo has been banged up but said he's good to go and we just saw Fenix return tonight on Dynamite. This will be a crazy match with gravity defying flips and will probably be in all the GIFs you see on Twitter. The Undercard Canek vs Psycho Clown (mask tournament round 1) - Canek is 69 years old, but should be able to do a passible brawl type match with Psycho. It also has a good chance of being Bowling Shoe Ugly as well. Feel free to place your bets now! Pagano/Bandidio/Taya vs Cibernetico/Andrade El Idolo/Deonna Purazzo - Andrade and Bandido will be asked to carry the load for the men, and Taya/Deonna have been feuding for the women's title (which Taya just won back on the Impact PPV) so it should be a fun if possibly messy brawl. Rayo de Jalisco Jr vs Blue Demon Jr (mask tournament round 1) - both dudes are in their 50's/60s but Demon has been fairly active and is still able to go fairly decently for an old dude, Rayo has not been active and from what he's shown the last time he appeared he's not going to be able to bring much to the table. Faccion Ingobernables (Dragon Lee/Dralistic) vs Taurus/Johnny Superstar (John Morrison) vs Laredo Kid/TBA (was scheduled to be Alberto but in a rare moment of clarity AAA realized that would be a bad idea) - . Should be another bonkers match, the mystery guy probably won't turn out to be anyone new. LA Park vs Villano IV (mask tournament round 1) - this is like the lucha equivalent of those matches on Rampage which are fun but's clear who's going to be winning here. Maravilla/Latigo vs Sexy Star (not that one, someone new is playing the character)/Octagon Jr vs Sammy Guevara/Tay Conti - this match is almost certainly going to change, since Sammy and Tay doing Twitter promos about not wanting to do the match unless the AAA Mixed Tag Titles are on the line. Problem with is the current champs are Arez and Chik Tormenta and Arez has a booking earlier that day. AAA is implying the champs will be there so either 1: Arez is catching a red eye from NYC to Monterrey 2: Arez is no showing his NYC booking 3: AAA is lying out their ass here. Any of those options could theoretically happen. Ultimo Dragon vs Pentagon Jr (mask tournament round 1) - This should probably be the best match of the mask tournament in terms of actual quality. Blehschmidt
So at first glance, and after not closely following Lucha in fifteen years, should I assume that Villano IV will be losing his mask?
Flyin' Brian
I'm not super familiar with Lucha, but have they ever done anything like this Death Roulette tournament before? I was under the impression that a mask match was a big deal, seems odd to do a tournament of all mask matches. So at the end of the tournament only one person will remain unmasked out of all of them? Have any of the people in the tournament ever lost their mask before? I guess if most of them are old it's like a passing of the torch moment, but I'm interested and confused at the same time. El-P
Main event should be insane, the three-way could be really good, the mixed match clusterfucks could be really fun (that is if Pagano gets Cibernetico stuck in some corner of the arena while the other four have an actual good match), but the mask matches look pretty awful. And yes, I'm kinda confused too, they are actually gonna get the mask off so many big time luchadors in one swoop ? Sounds not only bizarre but quite dumb too. Or is it only the final match that will be an actual mask vs mask match ?
NintendoLogic
The way the tournament works is that the losers advance and the loser of the finals is the one who loses his mask. Given that, Psycho Clown vs. Villano IV seems like the obvious final. Psycho is the company's biggest star and a match where his mask is on the line is the biggest thing they could headline the third Triplemania show with. Plus, all the other guys on his side of the bracket are old men who don't like doing jobs or putting over younger talent. I expect plenty of smoke and mirrors both to protect the losers and to make the matches watchable.
Al
It's not uncommon to see a multi-man "loser unmasks or loses hair" match at TripleMania.
sek69
Yeah in lucha, mask/hair tournaments are losers advance. Villiano IV seems like the obvious one getting unmasked unless Marisela opened up the checkbook to pay one of the bigger names
Rah
I have been waiting an umpteen number of years to finally see Rayo/Canek in a mask match. It's (almost) obviously going to be Psycho/Villano in the final but I won't ever give up this hope.
sek69
That's probably going to be the case (and Psycho putting his mask on the line was a big draw for AAA before), but the ace of the company losing to a barely mobile almost 70 year old in the first round is going to be a weird look even if it's a legend. sek69
Ultimo Dragon beat Penta in the opener, match was fine, probably gonna be the best DEATH ROULETTE match we get tonight. Mixed tag title match is next, Sammy got hurt on Dynamite but he's here and apparently the plan is for him to do the match.
sek69
....or not, Sammy came out with a crutch and announced Parka Negra as his replacement.
sek69
Tay picking up the slack for her boo and doing a flip from the top rope to the floor
sek69
Sammy pulls a SWERVE and hits everyone with the crutch, switches out with Parka Negra, and win the mixed tag titles for him and Tay. So basically Negra worked the match for him and Sammy just came in for the finish.
sek69
The history packages for each person in the mask tournament are pretty nice so far. Villiano IV coming out with the funky Pink Panther theme remix.
sek69
Damn, AAA reminding us Santos Escobar main evented Triplemania in a mask match with LA Park.
sek69
Park is a great brawler, but asking him to play Kevin Owens for Villano's more broken down version of Stone Cold is probably too much of an ask here.
sek69
Park out here with his mask half gone and bleeding like this is the finals, he's certainly doing his best to make this work.
sek69
Park being able to get the fans to bite that he might lose to the guy literally everyone thinks is losing his mask is why he's the GOAT

sek69
Dorian presents Latin Lover (who still looks like Mr. Steal Yo Girl all these years later) with an award for 30 years in lucha, only to be interrupted by JEFF JARRETT
sek69
The Jarretts out here cutting total WWE style heel promos. Looks like Jeff and Latin Lover is gonna be a program
sek69
The Jarretts and Rey Escorpion attacked Latin Lover, who was saved by Vampiro (who looks pretty good for a guy who claimed his brain was dying or whatever on Twitter like a year ago). Laredo Kid's mystery partner turned out to be Jack Cartwheel, which will make this match even more nuts. Morrison out in cowboy gear as Johnny Cabellero is hilarious.
