  5. Wouldn't the territorial stars in the LA and New York areas have a greater chance of breaking out into some type of mainstream success since they'd be located near Hollywood and the east coast media empire? Then again, if we're keeping a territorial mindset, perhaps the promoters wouldn't allow any potential stars to spread their wings beyond wrestling.
  6. My eye! My eye! Goddam you Klay Thompson my eye!
  7. I've been a Wolves fan since the franchise started. Where were these "loads of fanboys" you speak of who defended Kahn?
  8. There it is. Bradshaw is a better chickenshit thug comp for Laimbeer than Buddy. JDW: Kareem had the charisma of a bag of sand. No way he's even close to comparable to Flair. Instead of getting drunk and running around the bar wearing only his wrestling robe like Flair, Kareem converted to Islam and became a cultural ambassador (albeit a crabby one).
  9. Flair is much closer to Wilt than he is to Kareem. Laimbeer was too chickenshit to be Valentine. Laimbeer is kind of a blue collar version of Buddy Rose.
  10. Here's a great column on Verne from longtime Twin Cities sports columnists Patrick Reusse. http://www.startribune.com/sports/301579061.html?page=all&prepage=1&c=y#continue
  11. A couple years back, the History Museum here in Minnesota had a great exhibit called "Minnesota's Greatest Generation." It was basically anything and everything to do w/ how the WWII generation came together to not only win the war, but also keep the Minnesota economy going during the war. The multi-floor exhibit was filled with anything and everything you could imagine from that era. Fighter jet simulations, military artifacts, displays and items from Minnesota businesses, agricultural items, the role of women during the war, etc. etc. As I was wandering around the exhibit, I saw some huge gold hunk of something tucked in a display case off in the corner. I made my way over and it was Verne Gagne's original AWA world heavyweight championship belt. It only had a little note card describing what it was -- no fancy exhibit or video screen to accompany it like many other items had. But even so, it was really cool to see that piece of Minnesota history tucked away in a corner. The fact that it was included in the exhibit among so many other important items detailing the sacrifices of Minnesotans both fighting the war and remaining home tells you a lot about the fond memories people had of Verne in his home state. RIP.
  12. Kamala wins this one hands down. Akeem would rank higher if he wasn't so great as the One Man Gang before making the switch. If OMG had sucked, then I could see enjoying Akeem. But whenever I saw Akeem come dancing out, I chuckle a little, but want OMG back after about 10 seconds. How about Shawn Michaels? Who would've thought a guy who basically played a male stripper for much of his career would go down as one of the all-time greats.
  13. Kelly Olynyk just went Playboy Buddy Rose on Kevin Love's shoulder.
  14. Greg Poppovich is a heel that people cheer for. My Minnesota Timberwolves are the equivalent of TNA or Verne Gagne circa 1989.
  15. The Memphis wrestling night at a Grizzlies game this season probably caught Zach's attention, hence the Lawler reference.
  16. Does Bryan have enough cred built up to be a part-timer? Wrestle on the big shows and participate in a couple of angles on Raw throughout the year? (Or maybe be brought in once per year to tease and torture WWE fans who always want Bryan to win the Royal Rumble.)
  17. I suppose that's a fair question. I encounter more and more people who say they would rather watch football/baseball/basketball/hockey on TV than attend live games. Perhaps wrestling fans are the opposite?
  18. What are some matches or moments you were in the building for that seemed incredible live, but kinda meh when you got back home and re-watched on tape or DVR? I went to a Nitro back in 1998 or 99 where the mayor of Minneapolis came out to proclaim it Ric Flair Day in Minnesota. Fans booed the mayor, cheered Flair, and Flair cut a nice promo that seemed to have everyone in the building going nuts. The next day I re-watched the segment on tape and it wasn't nearly as good. It seemed sloppy, and what seemed like a great crowd reaction in the building came across as only so-so on television.
  19. I don't think Jericho gets much of a popularity push from his band. 1) They're awful. 2) When I see attendance figures from Fozzy's shows, they're extremely low. 3) I think the fact that he has a name from wrestling and a few of the guys in Fozzy have been around the rock/metal scene for a while helps get them booked on big festivals. 4) His record sales are also very low. Dancing with the Stars, however, that does wonders for a person's Q rating. I doubt Jericho gets Dancing with the Stars fans to listen to his wrestling/metal-themed podcasts, but that show really boosts a person's overall popularity (at least it used to).
  20. You and Johnny win the "Takes Thread Titles Way too Literally" tag team title belts.
  21. Vince by far. A few good matches. Several memorable angles and promos. Solid play-by-play guy back in the day.
  22. Kamala not understanding how a tag match works and his handlers constantly having to remind him to not beat up his tag team partner.
  23. I'll agree with Parv on this one. Now that the modern WWE megathread is locked,I say create a modern WWE folder to discuss all current happenings, booking and storylines in WWE. Anything related to philosophy or greatest ever goes in the main folder. Intelligent and insightful old school wrestling discussion is what made PWO great. Like all successful things, PWO has grown and evolved over time. Today, there seems to be a lot more modern WWE talk than old school. That's fine, but you can find modern WWE discussion all over the web, and most of it is repetitive (IMO) whining or armchair booking. By creating a modern WWE folder, you're letting people know that all wrestling discussion is welcome, but PWO's bread and butter -- what sets it apart from all the other wrestling boards out there -- is the analytical, insightful, intelligent, passionate, sometimes silly, sometimes angry, sometimes outlandish, always interesting discussion of old school wrestling. Right now if someone clicks on the main folder, they'll see threads mostly covering modern WWE. And not to be a dick, but most of these modern threads aren't covering any new territory that isn't covered at numerous other places around the web (with less flaming, I suppose). As it looks right now, the main folder doesn't make PWO stand out among other wrestling sites on the web like it should. When new visitors come here and click on the main folder, the first thing they'll see is a thread about old school territories, All Japan in the 1990s or some other old school wrestling discussion they haven't been able to find anywhere else on the web. Then they'll see all the sub-folders for the yearbooks, microscope, newsletter recaps and greatest of all time. Then they'll start clicking around and see that the threads aren't just idiots flaming each other. They'll think they died and went to old-school wrestling heaven. And oh by the way, there's a modern WWE folder, too, in case they want to chime in about Cesaro not getting pushed or Vince being out of touch. Perhaps the mods want to take PWO in a more modern direction. After all, this place has absolutely killed it when it comes to old school discussion. Maybe there simply isn't that much new ground to cover in old school wrestling discussion that PWO hasn't already covered and it's time to focus more on modern stuff. Personally, that's not what I want. But like I said earlier, like all successful things, as PWO grows, it will (and is) changing. I've rambled long enough. Looking forward to seeing where this discussion goes.
  24. You're one of those people who stares awkwardly?
