[1991-11-02-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Van Hammer
Cross Face Chicken Wing replied to Loss's topic in November 1991
If Chris Jericho got his break in '91, they probably would've given him Van Hammer rocker gimmick and Jericho probably would have been thrilled.- 8 replies

King Kong Bundy vs. One Man Gang
Cross Face Chicken Wing replied to Mad Dog's topic in The Microscope
I gotta go Bundy. Gang was probably the better worker in his prime, but Bundy's overall character earns him the nod. Akeem might be the most unintentionally (or intentionally?) funny gimmick ever, though. -
Draft & ongoing booking project interest?
Cross Face Chicken Wing replied to Grimmas's topic in The Archives
Sorry. I probably should've started a separate thread. Just wanted to throw this out as an alternative. 1) Because I love drafts and 2) because I've done the whole e-fed, TEW and ambitious online fantasy booking project before. Everyone starts out all gung-ho, then most people lose interest within a few months. -
Draft & ongoing booking project interest?
Cross Face Chicken Wing replied to Grimmas's topic in The Archives
Are people more into this project for the draft or the booking aspect? I ask because the booking aspect of this thing can easily turn into a chore and people will lose interest and drift away. Not to hijack the thread, but I'll just throw this out there as an alternate format for something like this: We get 10 people signed up. One person picks a year. Anyone who worked in North America that year is eligible to be picked. Promotions are chosen by the 10 participants Promoters can keep one worker, manager or tag team We draft a roster of 12-15 workers and 1-2 managers After the draft, each promoter writes a single post detailing how they'd book the year. Readers vote on which promoter did the best job The winner gets some type of prize.....(a $10 pot? a free month of WWE Network? Some type of cheesy wrestling item one of us donates as the prize?) The next month, we replace anyone who dropped out, someone else picks a year, we draft all new rosters, and do the whole thing over again. This way we're not obligated to write out weekly TV or do booking tasks that might seem like fun at first, but turn into work after a while. We're also not stuck with a roster we hate. After a month, we blow the whole thing up, redraft, and do something totally different. I'll stop now and await feedback -

Draft & ongoing booking project interest?
Cross Face Chicken Wing replied to Grimmas's topic in The Archives
Perhaps we could have someone in charge of Japan and the freelancers? He could let us know when the freelancers would be available for U.S. dates and which promotions they're interested in working for. From there, a dice roll determines where the freelancers go and how long they stick around before moving to another promotion. If we wanted to get really crazy, this person could also act like a Brody or Hansen and refuse to let their freelancers job except in special cases. For Japan, the person in charge could request dates from regular U.S. talent and the promoter could give a thumbs up or down. Might be useful for booking loser leaves town matches or injury angles. -
Memories from the video rental store
Cross Face Chicken Wing replied to Cross Face Chicken Wing's topic in Pro Wrestling
I was in a small town of about 6,500 people and my video stores were Video Update and See It Now video. Video Update had their wrestling just outside the entrance to the porn section. Since it was a small town, people I knew would often come in as I was browsing the wrestling videos. I heard countless jokes about me liking wresting as a cover to hide the fact that I was heading to the porn section. -
Kane an Observer Hall of Famer????

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!! -
I spent some time in a Family Video store the other day. Walking around and browsing the shelves brought back memories. I made my way over to the "sports and fitness" section to see what the wrestling selection was like, and it was pretty weak. Family Video must sell their wrestling DVDs not long after they get them. Anyway, video rental stores were a big part of me becoming a wrestling junkie. Here are a couple of my video rental memories: My family didn't have cable and we didn't have a VCR until I was in my teens. Once every 3-4 months, my parents would rent a VCR and a couple of movies. When I was about 6, we rented a VCR and my dad rented Wrestlemania III. I may have watched wrestling on TV before, but watching Wrestlemania III w/ my dad on our rented VCR is my first wrestling memory. From there, I discovered AWA TV on Sunday mornings, WWF TV on Saturday mornings, and the rest is history. Starrcade '86 was my first exposure to the NWA. I always saw the Starrcade '86 cassette on the shelf among all the WWF videos. I wondered what the hell it was. After I had watched all the WWF tapes available at my local video stores (many of them multiple times), I rented Starrcade. I loved it. The scaffold match hooked me immediately. Since I didn't have cable, I couldn't follow the NWA or WCW. I was stuck with only WWF and they dying AWA. I would do my best to keep up with the NWA and learn more about their wrestlers through PWI, The Wrestler and other wrestling magazines I could convince my mom to buy me at the grocery store. In the early 90s, The Great American Bash '87 tape popped up at one of my video stores for some reason. That first War Games remains one of my favorite matches to this day. I rented that tape repeatedly and wish I just would have bought the damn thing before the video store went out of business.

Draft & ongoing booking project interest?
Cross Face Chicken Wing replied to Grimmas's topic in The Archives
I like what I'm reading so far. Let's hypothetically say we get 10 people interested in doing this. Ten different guys doing fantasy booking type of threads will make for some loooooong reading. Is there anything we can do to make sure write-ups are short and sweet and not make it seem like such a chore to stay up w/ what's going on? -
I want to say Hansen, but Funk is such a great character I can't quite pull the trigger yet. Not to say Hansen wasn't also a great character, just not on the same level as Funk.

I like protecting one worker per territory. I wouldn't go more than one. -
Draft & ongoing booking project interest?

I like the idea of using real territories and completely re-drafting all the talent. We'd have to have keep some semblance of reality in how we draft. It'd also make for some interesting decisions. For example, say I'm drafting for Memphis and I have the first overall pick. Do I take Lawler knowing he's going to be a top guy for a long time in my territory? Or do I try and grab Lawler later in the draft because I know Lawler's value drops in every other promotion besides Memphis and other territory owners will probably pass on him in the first round? It also gives you some freedom to try different things. Maybe I have some grand idea of getting Giant Baba over in a territory where Giant Baba never worked so I'll snatch up Baba. Maybe I want to see what I could do w/ Tully Blanchard in the WWF. You want your core roster to make sense for the territory you own, but you still want some freedom to experiment and have fun. -

Is there also an RSS feed for Cornette's pod? I can't find that one through Downcast. -
Rick Rude vs. Ted Dibiase

The mom of one of my high school friends went to high school w/ Rude. She said at parties he'd get drunk and start throwing kitchen appliances into the swimming pool. -
Flair's podcast (WOOOOONation)
Cross Face Chicken Wing replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Flair often talks about how emotionally fragile he was at various points in his career. I can see how having the most powerful guy in wrestling get angry with him would get to Flair. -
Flair's podcast (WOOOOONation)
Cross Face Chicken Wing replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Flair just rambles and talks crazily. Hart is very serious and doesn't know how to react to some of Flair's incoherence. Surprisingly, it makes for a fun podcast. I get the sense that Hart tolerates Flair and kind of looks down on him. Hart still probably doesn't care for Flair, but doesn't think it's worth his time to badmouth or shun him. -
Vince will probably retire when he's dead, but let's say he announces that this will be his final year playing an active role in WWE. How would you send him off? Here's what I'd do: Immediately begin an angle where Vince goes on a retirement "tour," similar to what Jeter did w/ the Yankees a few years back. For about a month, he'll come out during every Raw and accept some type of retirement gift from a prominent person or ex-worker in whatever town they're in. Fans will be happy to see the old man one last time, he'll be humble and gracious, and there will be warm and fuzzy feelings. Then Daniel Bryan (or some other new guy) wins the WWE title and Vince starts changing. He makes snide remarks about the new champ during his retirement speech in each town. Gradually he becomes outright hostile and a total dick. Vince screws Bryan out of the title at Survivor Series in a Montreal screwjob sort of way. Once again drunk on power, Vince cancels his retirement plans and announces that he's going to remain in charge forever. He says Bryan can earn a chance to regain the title at Wrestlemania if he wins the Royal Rumble. Bryan says no, he wants Vince in a retirement match instead at the Rumble. Vince says yes and loses the retirement match (which features two special guest referees: Austin and HHH). At the hall of fame ceremony the night before Wrestlemania, there is only one inductee: Vince. The entire night is dedicated to him and includes guest speakers and video packages that both roast him and honor him. Vince then comes out to kick off Wrestlemania and soak in one last crowd reaction before he's gone. How's that for fantasy booking (emphasis on the word fantasy)?
