  1. They probably were going to hire Dave but backed out when he insisted on using a typewriter and white out instead of a computer.
  2. I remember he showed up on Smackdown in 2006 in a Diva Search segment, always found that random but great. Yeah, I randomly came across a Luke Perry Grantland thing where he talks to Simmons about wrestling and the first time he saw Kevin Sullivan. What celebrities do we know are big time wrestling fans or grew up on territories? Obviously there is people like Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), and others, like members of ZZ Top who like WWE, but do we know of celebs who are fans of older things? There's obvious ones like Bob Mould and Lars Frederickson Lots of professional athletes are or were at one point big wrestling fans RZA, Method Man and several other Wu-Tang members were big WWF fans growing up in the NYC area. There's actually a lot of rappers who reference 80's wrestling stuff in their lyrics Aaron Rodgers talks about being a wrestling fan. I doubt he's a hardcore fan like Lars but when he talks wrestling, it seems like he knows more than just the star wrestlers.
  3. His Dead Wrestler of the Week stuff was actually decent. I'm not buying the book either way, but rehashing his Dead Wrestler of the Week work in book form would be a helluva lot better than writing an entire book in Grantland style.
  4. Is the book only results? Or is there some analysis and stories mixed in?

  6. No kidding. I had that one No. 5.
  7. I had Bock/Flair as my No. 4. I loved the match. It was intense and it kind of caught me off guard a bit. I was expecting a different type of match. Clipping makes no difference to me whatsoever. If the committee determines that it's good enough to go on the set, I'm not going to dock it points simply because it's clipped. Flair has taken grief on all of the 80s set podcasts, if I remember correctly. Not that people have disliked him, but a few folks on the pods almost seem disappointed when Flair matches finish as high as they do. I get that there can be Flair overkill, but I just calls 'em like I sees 'em. I usually end up liking Flair's matches a whole helluva lot and rank them accordingly.
  8. In case you're taking requests: Hayes offering a drink to Suzy Kolber during the Joe Namath "I wanna kiss you" interview. http://media.salon.com/2006/11/broadway_jo...west_moment.jpg
  9. He's been Simmons-ized. Everything is relateable to some ironic section of pop culture or a sports analogy, even if it makes no fucking sense whatsoever.
  10. Who has been known to knock people out with a slap during his bouncer days. According to a buddy's mom who went to high school w/ Rude and Curt Hennig, they both would toss refrigerators and various other appliances into swimming pools at parties. A contractor that did some work in my basement used to roll w/ Hawk and Animal back in the day. He told me a story about having to leave the bar quickly one time because Hawk tore a urinal off the wall in the bathroom and threw it at a guy. Not sure if that stuff makes any of them legit tough guys, but they're cool stories
  11. Maybe I'm turning into a grouch myself as I get older, but I really agreed with Ross on the Manziel stuff. I'm the one who turns into a grouch when adults get filthy rich off of a kid and the kid is prevented from capitalizing on his own talent and personality to make a few bucks himself. And then many of these same adults demand that the kid shut up, stand up straight, and say "yessir" or "nosir" when spoken to? It's ridiculous. Manziel isn't the heel in this situation.
  12. The usual crap about how Manziel's parents should've taken him behind the woodshed when he was growing up, being entitled, not being a "team" player.
  13. Hearing Jim Ross talk about college football vs. the NFL and opine about Johnny Manziel on Austin's latest podcast is further proof that Ross is indeed a grouchy, hateful and vile human being.
  14. Oh MM most definitely is Simmons-ized. His writing is fine, it's the content and disconnectedness that makes him bad. His prose is fine. I've quit reading Simmons over the last year or so because he's checked out. He marries himself to the "quirky" angle or take whether it's insightful or not. Still a helluva wordsmith, though, even if it's just putting a tuxedo on a scarecrow. His podcasts are slipping too. Grizzlies fans are nervous during games because they're still on edge from the MLK assassination. Ugh. I wouldn't mind seeing what MM and BS could come up with for ideas on a wrestling 30 for 30 series. Something to get them both away from a keyboard for a while.
  15. I laughed my ass off (and cried a little at the same time) when Austin opened part 2 of the Lawler pod by talking about wrestlers drinking in the car on the way to shows, back in the day when you could do that because nothing bad would happen!
  16. I liked his Dead Wrestler of the Week posts at Deadspin. He's been "Simmons-ized" at Grantland: Find a quirky angle. Stick to it no matter how absurd it is. Receive praise from Internet hipsters and writing snobs who care more about prose than insight. Repeat. (And for the record, I don't mind Bill Simmons. But one of him is enough)
  17. My sports viewing schedule is a lot like John's. I also have two jobs, write for a Packers blog, travel often to visit family, play a lot of sports text sim PC games and have a kid on the way. Not much time for wrestling, but when I move wrestling up my priority list, I probably watch 4 hours per week. My problem is if I start watching before bed I fall asleep. I can watch anything else before bed and stay wide awake, but I nod off for wrestling for some reason.
  18. Another excellent interview and podcast from Austin. Lawler even took the "We used to wrestle every night and twice on Saturdays and Sundays" shoot interview fib to a new level by claiming he used to wrestle 10 times per week! Who's going to be the first wrestler to up that number to 15?
  19. Mark me down as the third vote for The Rockers. The glam metal look wins out over the creepy handkerchief over the neck look. Also, Morton never super kicked Robert through the plate glass window of a fake barber shop.

  21. I'll say it again: If someone cares enough to offer an opinion on a WWE show after only reading results, odds are good that they're already diehard wrestling fans and have enough of a background to form that opinion. Limiting the right to criticize only to those who watch everything week in and week out is unrealistic and simplistic. If I cared enough about modern WWE, I would probably rather read opinions form a well-respected wrestling mind who didn't watch the show over someone who did. The recaps from those who watch these days tend to wander a little too far into fanboy territory for my tastes.
