  1. Yeah, Greg is going to be represented BIG TIME on this new set. Including stuff not many people have seen before..... Awesome. I created this thread a while back because Valentine seems like one of those guys I should know more about, and should have a better rep, but for some reason, he's still under the radar. Sounds like he will no longer be under the radar once the revamped WWF set is released. I get that Valentine's WWF work is still probably not a fair representation of his career, but it's better than nothing.
  2. There are two things in wrestling that cause me to laugh out loud whenever I see them: 1. Kamala patting his tummy and/or getting confused about how a tag match works. 2. Akeem dancing. I was hoping Harley would get into it with his arms and hands like Akeem does, but it's more of a strut. It was decent, I guess. Before the match starts, Harely is grinning and saying something to Akeem. I imagine he's telling Akeem that he has to buy the case of Colt 45 for the drive to the next town.
  3. Using the word "ugh" any time you're talking about Donald Trump, regardless of context, is perfectly acceptable.
  4. Just wanted to chime in and say that I've enjoyed listening to these podcasts on my way to work. Now, in addition to spending too much of my free time watching wrestling, I also spend too much time listening to other people watching wrestling. I like the organic format of this type of show better than the results podcasts that usually accompnay the end of an 80s project. The results pods are still fun, but these as-it-happens types of shows are easier to follow. It's hard to cram in thoughts on so many matches and wrestlers in one results podcast. Plus it can be hard remember exactly which matches are being talked about. EDIT: If you're ever between 80s sets and still looking to feed people's wrestling podcast fix, I think it'd be fun to pick out a random disc from a yearbook or another comp and do a show on that.

  6. Has anyone ever been to the WCW hall of fame at the CNN Center? Do photos exist? I wonder what's in that room today....
  7. Cool segment. But someone should've taught Bedlam to not flash his crotch while digging for the brass knux.
  8. The start of this match was a snoozefest. It seemed like they were just sitting in holds for the hell of it. Once things got going, though, it really got going. Perhaps the blahness early was to make the stuff at the end seem even better.
  9. The way to get on Simmons' good side is to do the following: 1. Convince Larry Bird that he should let Simmons blow him. 2. Write something with a bunch of silly and dated pop culture references. 3. Convince Tom Brady that he should let Simmons blow him. 4. Pretend that liking reality TV in an ironic way is still cool. 5. Convince any member of the 2004 Red Sox that he should let Simmons blow him. 6. Write a perfectly fine 1,000-word column, then rewrite it into a 10,000-word navel-gazing mess just because you can. 7. Tell Simmons that it's bullshit a newspaper in Boston never hired him to cover a pro beat back in the day.
  10. Me too. Oh well. I want to try and call into one of these because I know the world is waiting to hear me talk about the time Ken Patera called me.
  11. Is there any footage online of the "gimmick brawler and true powerhouse" 70s version of Steele that you would recommend? Sounds intriguing.
  12. Tony blames the liberals for the fact that the word "Death" is no longer used in Texas Death Match. If WCW wasn't owned by Ted Turner, perhaps Rush Limbaugh could have joined Tony as a guest color commentator on a PPV. Tony, Jesse and Rush calling a match would be...interesting.
  13. I've been lukewarm on the Dream Machine the few times he's popped up on this set, but this match completely brought me around. Those punches toward the end looked brutal! I also loved how DM didn't waste any time running away at the end. No pause to sell it to the crowd or try and save face a little. He just took off and didn't even slow down.
  14. Hello. My name is Cross Face Chicken Wing, and I'm a wrestling addict. I'm 31 and my first memory of wrestling was my dad renting the family a VCR and getting us Wrestlemania III. I was hooked through about mid-1995, mostly on WWF because that's all we got on network TV growing up in small-town Minnesota. I do remember watching some AWA on Sunday mornings and going to a live AWA event where Wahoo McDaniel was supposed to face Manny Fernandez. Unfortunately, the Raging Bull's flight was "cancelled," so Wahoo chopped the hell out of Pat Tanaka for 7 minutes instead. I checked out of the wrestling world for a bit, but came back around 1997 thanks to buzz among my friends about the NWO and Hogan vs. Sting. I got into VHS tape trading, often swapping Metallica concerts for wrestling videos. I was mainly into old-school NWA because I didn't get to see it growing up and loved the product. I checked out for a bit again around 2001 or 02, but came back around a few years later. PWO means I likely will never check out of wrestling again. The business of wrestling fascinates me, and there's always some discussion on the busiess aspect of wrestling going on here. The comp-makers that float around the boards also ensure that I will never run out of fresh old-school footage to add to my collection and watch.
  15. I planned to call in, but I have a nasty cold and lost my voice. I probably sound better with no voice, anyway.....
  16. I've never seen the guy wrestle but I listen to his podcast if he ever has someone on that I care about. Colt is entertaining enough on his own -- and I could see it being a great night if I ever bought him a drink and he started telling wrestling stories -- but I wish he did a better job interviewing his guests. I'm not looking for Bob Costas vs. Jerry Sandusky type of questioning, but I hate how most people conducting interviews w/ wrestlers just throw out general stuff and let the wrestler ramble on forever. A few specific questions and interjecting with some follow-ups every now and then would be nice.
  17. The non-Hogan part of the WWF roster was like a modern-day NFL pregame show. Lots of over-the-top zaniness to occupy time before the game starts. Every now and then you get something meaningful, but it's mostly a train wreck. You could literally replace everyone on set during the middle of an NFL pregame show and nobody would give a shit as long as the game started on time. Ditto for the non-Hogan WWF roster during the years being discussed as long as the Hulkster came out and did his thing.
  18. It was tough going from the brutal chair and shovel shots in the Nastys/Foley/Payne match to the weak-ass chair shot delivered by Harley Race to Rude. The fans ate it up, though.
  19. Heenan was also great calling this match. This was my first exposure to a WCW ppv. I knew about the NWA/WCW through magazines and sometimes seeing Saturday night if we were at a hotel, but I never had a chance to watch an entire PPV or even complete show. My dad knew a guy who usually sent us the WWF PPVs and then one day this tape showed up in the mail. My brother and I were in shock when we watched it. It was awesome! And this match might have been the best of them all. I wonder if Foley told the production crew about his big bump beforehand. It would have been nice if they were in position to catch the entire impact. I know in his book, Foley talks a bit about getting pissed at Shiavone for underselling some of his big bumps, but this one wasn't Shiavone's fault.
  20. This place is great. Even though some of the Microscope threads get a little tedious, I learn a lot reading them. The occassional bickering resembles a family squabble instead of annoying internet flame wars. One suggestion: Those of you who plow through the yearbooks at astonishing speeds and comment on everything right away in the yearbook forums, check back in on the threads every once in a while. Those of us who move slower still like to check the forums and chime in on things every now and then. I kind of stopped because it feels like I'm mostly talking to myself. After the first poster or two does a big long review of the match or segment, there are usually a few more posts, then everyone moves on and never returns. The same thing happens in the Too Short threads at DVDVR for the 80s sets.
  21. The wife just found out she's pregnant. I'm in on this if any fathers on the call can share some tips about feeding the wrestling addiction while dealing with a pregnant wife and (in 9 months) a newborn baby.
  22. I just started Will's Murdoch set. Murdoch even had a beer gut in the early 70s! It's like the rest of his body got bigger to catch up with his beer gut as he got older. Usually it's the other way around. Goofy Murdoch is just as good as brawling Murdoch. I love how every now and then he'll stand up in the middle of a match, yank up his trunks because they're falling down, then cover his mouth, turn his head and let out a big smoker's cough.
