As much as it pains me to say it, guys, I'm afraid I'm going to have to drop out. Circumstances beyond my control have me way behind on several other projects, so I just don't have time for this right now. Not saying I won't be back at some point. I've loved working with that WWA roster and hopefully somebody can step up and take it to new heights

June 16, 1984 – WWA Superstar Challenge (airing as Wrestling at the Chase in St. Louis, MO) from the WTTV Studios in Indianapolis, IN David McLane welcomes us to the show and begins by discussing the Central States Tag Team Title tournament that begins this week. The finals will take place next Saturday evening in an event called “Superstar Wars” that will be taking place at the Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis, MO and will air live on the USA Network. First, a breakdown of the brackets of what we have learned is an 11-team tournament. First Round Matches: 1.) Swede Hanson & Mike George vs. The O Zone 2.) Matt Borne & Dan Spivey vs. Jimmy Snuka & Bobo Brazil 3.) Jerry Valiant & Abdullah the Great vs. Jay & Mark Youngblood 4.) The Midnight Express vs. Hector Guerrero & Keith Larsen Quarterfinals: 5.) Winner 1 vs. Winner 2 6.) Winner 3 vs. The Zambuie Express 7.) Winner 4 vs. Chavo & Mando Guerrero Semifinals: 8.) Winner 5 vs. Winner 6 9.) Winner 7 vs. Chris Adams & Tony Garea Finals: 10.) Winner 8 vs. Winner 9 Also as part of the Superstar Wars show next Saturday will be a match for the Missouri Title where Harley Race will defend the championship against former champion Nick Bockwinkel. A pretaped promo from Bockwinkel then airs where he says he already beat Race in the final match last week, did not lose to Race, and therefore feels he is the rightful champion and will prove it in St. Louis next weekend. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 1. NWA Central States Tag Team Title Tournament First Round Match scheduled for one fall with a 15-minute time limit: Swede Hanson & Mike George defeated The O Zone in 12:15 when George pinned Jerry O with the piledriver. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 2. NWA Central States Tag Team Title Tournament First Round Match scheduled for one fall with a 15-minute time limit: Jay & Mark Youngblood defeated Jerry Valiant & Abdullah the Great by disqualification in 7:47 when a frustrated Valiant threw referee Johnny Shorn out of the ring. With that, there are no further tournament matches scheduled for this week’s show, so McLane reviews the brackets as they stand now: First Round Matches: 1.) Swede Hanson & Mike George vs. The O Zone 2.) Matt Borne & Dan Spivey vs. Jimmy Snuka & Bobo Brazil 3.) Jerry Valiant & Abdullah the Great vs. Jay & Mark Youngblood 4.) The Midnight Express vs. Hector Guerrero & Keith Larsen Quarterfinals: 5.) The Spoiler & Mike George vs. Winner 2 6.) Jay & Mark Youngblood vs. The Zambuie Express 7.) Winner 4 vs. Chavo & Mando Guerrero Semifinals: 8.) Winner 5 vs. Winner 6 9.) Winner 7 vs. Chris Adams & Tony Garea Finals: 10.) Winner 8 vs. Winner 9 ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- David McLane interviews Tony Garea, who says he hasn’t forgotten the reason we’re having this tournament: the injury to Eddie Gilbert. Garea says he knows for a fact that Larry Zbyszko was behind the attack and will not stop until he gains revenge and wins the Midwest Television Title. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 3. One fall with TV time remaining: Tony Garea defeated Blackjack Mulligan by disqualification in 5:38 when Larry Zbyszko interfered. Zbyszko and Mulligan continued to double team Garea until Chris Adams made the save. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 4. One fall with TV time remaining: Lord Humongous (w/Matt Borne) pinned Jerry Grey in 8 seconds, immediately hitting a choke slam at the bell and covering him with one foot. After the match, Borne and Humongous join David McLane at the broadcast table. Borne says he and Dan Spivey will win the Central States Tag Team Title tournament, and he hopes that they defeat Tony Garea and Chris Adams in the finals as it is financially in their best interests to do so. McLane asks point blank if Zbyszko is paying them to take out Garea the way they took out Gilbert, but Borne just laughed and walked backstage. With that, McLane reminds us that the tournament continues next week and signs off.

Replace Spoiler with Swede Hanson then

WWA is adding Jake Milliman to the jobber pack that includes Jerry Grey and Billy Anderson. WWA would also like to add Mike George and The Spoiler to the full time roster as well

WWA News Overall the feedback has been phenomenal for the 45-minute marathon match that saw Harley Race win the Missouri Heavyweight Title. I enjoyed the match myself as it was an interesting concept but felt it could have used a few more falls. The plan for Nick Bockwinkel's new manager to be revealed has been pushed back at least two weeks. Eddie Gilbert is not actually injured but will in fact be working for the USWA. Blackjack Mulligan coming in is part of the agreement to bring him in. I'm hearing the Central States Tag Team Tournament will feature a total of 11 teams, covering several weeks of TV. There was talk of a USA Network special for the finals but that will depend on the availability of a building on fairly short notice.

Quick and Dirty results for WWA Superstar Challenge (June 9, 1984 from the WTTV Studios in Indianapolis, IN) David McLane announced that due to injuries suffered last week, Eddie Gilbert would be out of action a minimum of 8 weeks and as a result the NWA Central States Tag Team Title has been vacated. A tournament will start next week, and Tony Garea will be allowed to pick a partner and receive a bye directly to the semifinals. 1. Blackjack Mulligan (w/NWA Midwest Television Champion Larry Zbyszko) defeated Bill Anderson with the clawhold in 2:42. During the match, Zbyszko was on commentary and announced he had not only hired Mulligan to be his bodyguard, but he is responsible for Lord Humongous, Matt Borne and Dan Spivey being in the WWA. McLane implies that means Zbyszko put the hit out on Gilbert last week but Zbyszko denies any prior knowledge of it. 2. Harley Race won the 45-minute marathon match to win the vacant NWA Missouri Heavyweight Championship, defeating Bob Roop, Dory Funk Jr. and Nick Bockwinkel. Bockwinkel actually won the first fall but pinning Race with a piledriver in 10:30, but Race defeated Roop by submission at 26:51 to a figure-four leglock before pinning Funk with a fisherman suplex in 33:47. Bockwinkel did have Race in a figure-four leglock of his own for the final two minutes of the match but was unable to get the submission before time expired.

I had to pick up some extra hours at work this week so I'm behind but I hope to get caught up this week.
-
While it technically doesn't need updated, just to make everyone aware that WWA is sending Eddie Gilbert to the USWA in exchange for Blackjack Mulligan effective today through September 1

A couple of minor WWA changes: Matt Borne replaced Mike Rotundo several months ago. Goliath retired in March.

June 2, 1984 – WWA Superstar Challenge (airing in St. Louis as Wrestling at the Chase) airing live from the WTTV Studios in Indianapolis, IN David McLane welcomes us to the show. The WWA is focused on the big four man marathon match to take place next week for the vacant Missouri Heavyweight Title. Tonight, all four of those men will be action, plus Larry Zbyszko will defend the NWA Midwest Television Title. But first, earlier this week, Gary Hart issued an open challenge to any tag team to face the Zambuie Express in a bunkhouse match, and that match is first. 1. Bunkhouse Match (come as you are, anything goes) scheduled for one fall to a finish: The Zambuie Express (w/Gary Hart) defeated The O Zone in 9:35 when Kareem Muhammed pinned Steve Olsonoski with a splash. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- Tony Garea joins McLane at the announce table. Garea says that two weeks ago, he issued a challenge to Larry Zbyszko for the Midwest Television Title, but Zbyszko has not only refused to respond to the challenge, but instead is defending the title against somebody else instead. Title or no title, Garea says he will get his hands on Zbyszko. With that, Zbyszko comes out and says he is tired of Garea coming out, claiming he was the better half of their team when they were in the northeast, and that he is going to give Garea a chance to put his money where his mouth is. “I’m scheduled to defend my title tonight against a veteran by the name of Bobby Colt, who was once a World Champion here in WWA. But if you’re willing to face Colt, and you beat him, I’ll grant you his shot at the title instead.” Garea agrees, and Colt comes out beginning to argue with Zbyszko, claiming it isn’t his decision to make. WWA Commissioner Dick the Bruiser then comes out, says “You’re right. Champions don’t make the matches. I do. But that’s a great idea, so it’s going to happen right now.” ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 2. One fall to determine the challenger for the NWA Midwest Television Championship: Bobby Colt pinned NWA Central States Tag Team Champion Tony Garea in 5:29 when Larry Zbyszko tripped Garea while referee Johnny Shorn had his back turned. Garea protested to deaf ears. 3. One fall with a 10-minute time limit for the NWA Midwest Television Championship: Larry Zbyszko© defeated Bobby Colt by disqualification in 2:29 when Garea interfered. Zbyszko left the ring and ran to the back before Garea could do any more damage. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 4. One fall with a 15-minute time limit: The match between Bob Roop, Dory Funk Jr. (w/James J. Dillon) & Nick Bockwinkel vs. Keith Larsen, Jerry Grey & Billy Anderson ended in a no contest in just 48 seconds when Lord Humongous entered the ring, grabbed referee Connie Marker by the throat, and slammed him to the mat. Roop, Funk and Bockwinkel left the ring while Humongous laid out Larsen, Grey and Anderson. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 5. Harley Race pinned Les Thornton with a belly-to-belly suplex in 5:01. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 6. One fall with TV time remaining: NWA Central States Tag Team Champion Eddie Gilbert (w/Tony Garea) defeated Dan Spivey (w/Matt Borne) by disqualification in 12:42. Late in the match, Borne attacked Garea from behind and rammed him head first into the ringpost. Moments later, Lord Humongous emerged from the locker room and grabbed Gilbert by the throat, taking him down with the same move that he took the referee down with earlier in the evening. Humongous did the move to Gilbert again as the last shot before the camera faded out was Borne laughing and yelling “Again! Again!”

I have a couple of pending offers out there for Gilbert which is appreciated. Will make a decision shortly and announce it once finalized

WWA News A deal was brokered at the last minute that will allow WWA to have specials on the USA Network. The original deal was for monthly specials, but with some changes being made to the front office, it was decided to go to a quarterly schedule with a mutual option for additional specials. Rumor is the next special may take place June 23 but that is hardly set in stone. The WWA is going to try to coordinate dates with the NWA World Champion's scheduled appearances in the area. As seen on this past weekend's TV, Chris Adams will be getting at least one match against NWA World Champion Ric Flair. Dick the Bruiser is pushing for Adams to win the title but is getting resistance from the NWA Board of Directors on the change. The angle with Larry Zbyszko and Tony Garea has not been forgotten about and they will be in a program moving forward. After their win at the Superdome last week, NWA World Tag Team Champions The Fantastics are expected to be in WWA on nearly a full time schedule. Expect some more talent exchanges in the next few weeks, with one surprise in particular being removed from the roster.

If anybody would like Eddie Gilbert for 2-3 months I'm listening to offers. I would want Gilbert back around September 1.

May 26, 1984 - WWA Superstar Challenge (airing as Wrestling at the Chase in St. Louis) airing live from the WTTV Studios in Indianapolis, IN David McLane welcomes us to the show and lets us know that NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair will be competing in a non-title match in our main event. Also, All four competitors in the marathon match for Missouri Title in two weeks will square off in a tag team match later on. But first, McLane brings out the Guerreros and announces that last night, they lost the NWA World Tag Team Championship to the Fantastics in New Orleans. As highlights of the match air, the Guerreros praise The Fantastics for their tremendous ability but say they want a rematch in WWA territory because they feel the result will be different. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 1. One fall with a 10-minute time limit: Hector Guerrero defeated Les Thornton by submission to a version of the Indian deathlock in 7:25. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 2. One fall with a 15-minute time limit: Matt Borne & Dan Spivey defeated The O Zone in 1:55 when Spivey pinned Jerry O with a bulldog headlock. After the match, Borne and Spivey make their way to the interview area and tell David McLane that their new focus is on the Central States Tag Team Title and issue a challenge to Common Ground for the titles. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 3. One fall with a 15-minute time limit: Bob Roop & Dory Funk Jr. defeated Harley Race & Nick Bockwinkel in 8:29 when Roop pinned Race with a rolling cradle, using the trunks for leverage. Bockwinkel never tagged into the match and seemed unwilling to do so. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 4. One fall with a 15-minute time limit: The Youngbloods defeated The Midnight Express in 4:33 when Jay Youngblood pinned Randy Rose with a flying Tomahawk chop. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- Chris Adams joins David McLane at the announce table and says while he’s disappointed that he wasn’t able to make the finals of the Missouri Title tournament, he wants a shot at Ric Flair and the NWA World Heavyweight Title. Hearing this as he heads to the ring, Flair approaches the table and tells Adams to watch and learn from the master. 5. Non-title match scheduled for one fall with TV time remaining: NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair pinned Keith Larsen with a small package in 8:29 in a surprisingly competitive match. Larsen appeared to win the match with a flying dropkick only moments before, but Flair got a foot on the rope a split second before referee Connie Marker got the three count. After the match, Adams told Flair as he headed to the locker room “all I learned was how close you can come to losing when you underestimate an opponent.” An angry Flair slapped Adams in the face, and that led to a brawl where several wrestlers came in to separate them as the show went off the air.

May 19, 1984 – WWA Superstar Challenge (airing as Wrestling at the Chase in St. Louis) live from the WTTV Studios in Indianapolis, IN David McLane welcomes us to the show. Tonight, the quarterfinals of the Missouri Title tournament will conclude, and following the final match of the quarterfinal round, WWA Commissioner will make an important announcement regarding the final four competitors in that tournament. Also, NWA Midwest Television Champion Larry Zbyszko will defend the championship. But first, NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair will be in studio next week, and we cut to a pretaped interview with Flair where he says he isn’t sure who he’ll be facing next week on WWA TV, but whoever it is will end up like Jimmy Snuka did after facing him: A broken and defeated man. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 1. One fall with a 10-minute time limit for the NWA Midwest Television Championship: Larry Zbyszko successfully defended the championship, pinning NWA Central States Tag Team Champion Eddie Gilbert with a piledriver in 6:26. Gilbert appeared to win the title less than a minute earlier with a flying dropkick, but Zbyszko just barely got a foot on the rope. After the match, Zbyszko set Gilbert up for another piledriver before Gilbert’s partner, Tony Garea, made the save. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- Tony Garea joins David McLane at the interview area. “It’s no secret, Zbyszko, that you and I have a long history together. Former tag team champions together up in New York. So I respect you, and at one point I considered you a friend. But what you just tried to do to Eddie Gilbert is unforgivable. That kid suffered severe neck injuries in a car accident this time last year, and you tried to exploit that not to win a match, but to try to end his career. Why don’t you try to take me out like that, Zbyszko? Because I’m right here waiting for you!” ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 2. NWA Missouri Heavyweight Title Tournament Quarterfinal (One fall with a 30-minute time limit): Dory Funk Jr. (w/James J. Dillon) pinned Bobo Brazil in 11:16 when Brazil passed out to the pain of a spinning toehold. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 3. NWA Missouri Heavyweight Title Tournament Quarterfinal (One fall with a 30-minute time limit): In an almost dead even match, Nick Bockwinkel pinned Jacques Rougeau when he reversed Rougeau’s inside cradle into one of his own and grabbed a handful of trunks in 21:49. McLane acknowledges that we have almost run out of TV time for this week, but our affiliates are providing us a few extra minutes for Dick the Bruiser’s announcement, which is coming up next. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- David McLane brings Dick the Bruiser out to the interview area and asks what the big announcement is. Bruiser praises the athletic of all four of our remaining competitors, and he says that the standard format of three individual one-on-one matches could lead to three of the greatest matches in history. “But here in WWA, we strive to be different. We strive to be innovative. And we strive to prove we have the toughest sons of guns in all of wrestling.” So he announces that the finals of the tournament will take place on television three weeks from today, June 9. And on June 9, Harley Race, Bob Roop, Dory Funk Jr., and Nick Bockwinkel will face off in the WWA’s first ever four man marathon match. McLane: “A marathon match? What is a marathon match?” Bruiser: “In this match, two men will be in the ring with two men waiting for tags. You may tag in anybody at any time. A fall is scored by pinfall, submission, disqualification, or countout with the legal men involved. This match will last exactly 45 minutes, and whoever wins the most falls will be the Missouri Champion.” McLane: “Wow, I don’t think any promotion has ever tried an undertaking like that, but I do have to ask one question. What happens in the event of a tie between two or more of the competitors?” Bruiser: “With this format, I doubt it happens, but if it does, we’ll come up with some sort of sudden death system between now and then.” With that, McLane acknowledges that we are way over time but reminds us that NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair will be in studio next week.

May 12, 1984 – WWA Superstar Challenge (airing as Wrestling at the Chase in St. Louis) from WTTV Studios in Indianapolis, IN David McLane welcomes us to the show and gives a brief recap of last week’s first round matches in the Missouri Title tournament. Today, the remaining first round matches will take place, two of the lovely ladies of wrestling will be in action, and the second round of the tournament may start depending on remaining TV time. McLane reminds us that all first round tournament matches will have a 20-minute time limit. 1. First Round Match in the Missouri Title tournament: Nick Bockwinkel pins Eddie Gilbert in 2:30. Gilbert actually dominated the match from bell to bell, but missed a cross body off the top, which knocked the wind out of him just long enough for Bockwinkel to score the pin. McLane suggests that Bockwinkel needs to decide on a manager soon since he’s clearly off his game. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 2. One fall with a 10-minute time limit: Desiree Peterson pinned Judy Martin with a high cross body in 3:24. McLane speculates that Peterson may be in line for a shot at the Fabulous Moolah’s ladies title. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 3. The final first round match in the NWA Missouri Heavyweight Title Tournament: Jacques Rougeau pinned brother Raymond Rougeau in an instant classic. After a largely scientific affair, Raymond took Jacques down with an O’Connor roll, but Jacques rolled through it into one of his own for the pin at 15:29. The brothers shook hands after the match. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- McLane is at the interview area with WWA commissioner Dick the Bruiser, and they run over the second round matches: Chris Adams vs. Harley Race Bob Roop vs. Jimmy Snuka Dory Funk Jr. vs. Bobo Brazil Nick Bockwinkel vs. Jacques Rougeau Bruiser praises the effort everybody put in for the first round and is looking forward to these second round matches later on tonight. Bruiser does state that he is going to do something never done before for the final four and will give more details about that next week. Bruiser announces that the second round matches will all be one fall with a 30-minute time limit. Those matches are next. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 4. Second Round Match in the NWA Missouri Heavyweight Title tournament: Harley Race pinned Chris Adams with a fisherman suplex in 5:14. Adams set Race up for a backdrop, and Race immediately put the suplex on for the pin. McLane says that while it’s not an upset, it’s a surprise as many people thought Adams was destined for the finals. Race offers a hand after the match, and Adams hesitates before taking it. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 5. Second Round Match in the NWA Missouri Heavyweight Title tournament: Bob Roop defeated Jimmy Snuka by countout in 7:10. Snuka was in control late in the match and sent Roop tumbling to the floor with a jumping headbutt. Snuka then took a big risk, climbing to the top turnbuckle and diving toward Roop, but Roop moved out of the way and Snuka crashed hard to the concrete floor. McLane pointed out that the risk cost Snuka the NWA World Title two weeks ago in the cage and now it costs him here. And with that, McLane mentions the remaining second round matches would take place next week plus Dick the Bruiser’s announcement regarding the final two rounds of the tournament.

May 5, 1984 – WWA Superstar Challenge (airing as Wrestling at the Chase in St. Louis) @ the WTTV Studios in Indianapolis, IN David McLane welcomes us to the show and shows highlights of the controversial double pin in last weekend’s match between Chris Adams and Nick Bockwinkel for the Missouri Title. As a result, the title has been held up pending a tournament that is beginning tonight. The first round matches, which were determined by a random drawing: Chris Adams vs. Les Thornton Harley Race vs. Chavo Guerrero Bob Roop vs. Mando Guerrero Larry Zbyszko vs. Jimmy Snuka Dory Funk Jr. vs. Steve O Bobby Colt vs. Bobo Brazil Nick Bockwinkel vs. Eddie Gilbert Jacques Rougeau vs. Raymond Rougeau All first round matches will be one fall with a 20-minute time limit, and McLane says we will get as many of the first round matches done as possible during this hour, with the rest of the first round and start of the quarterfinals next week. 1. First Round Match: Chris Adams pinned Les Thornton with a Superkick in 2:30. During the match, an inset promo was shown where Thornton said he would prove himself to be the best European wrestler in the WWA. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 2. First Round Match: Harley Race pinned NWA World Tag Team Champion Chavo Guerrero with a belly-to-belly suplex in 9:56 of a back-and-forth match. During the match, pretaped promos from both men were shown where they discussed their series last fall for the NWA World Heavyweight Title. Both men shook hands after the match. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 3. First Round Match: Bob Roop, in his WWA debut, pinned NWA World Tag Team Champion Mando Guerrero with a shoulderbreaker in 6:17. During the match, a pretaped promo from Roop played where he said he would let his actions in the ring do his talking for him. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 4. First Round Match: Jimmy Snuka defeated NWA Midwest Television Champion Larry Zbyszko by countout in 7:01 when Zbyszko rolled out of the ring to avoid a Superfly Splash and ran off to the locker room. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 5. First Round Match: Dory Funk Jr. (w/James J. Dillon) defeated Steve O in 3:51 when referee Johnny Shorn stopped the match when Steve O was not moving following a piledriver. ---------- COMMERCIAL ---------- 6. First Round Match: Bobo Brazil pinned Bobby Colt with the Coco Butt in 4:20. Nick Bockwinkel joined McLane on commentary during the match and said had Bobby Heenan not been railroaded out of WWA, the travesty that was the Missouri Title Match would not have happened. As the match ended, Bockwinkel continued his promo, stating that he was searching for a new manager, and by the time this tournament is over, he will have someone by his side to assure nothing like that happens again. McLane states we are out of time but the final two matches of the first round and, time permitting, the quarterfinals of the Missouri Title tournament will take place next week.
