Boondocks Kernoodle replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
One would think, but remember he was released in 2003 for having a bad attitude and working too stiff. I haven't read about him having either problem since coming back but you never know. -
Supposedly, after Tony Atlas came into the AWA and got over huge in his debut, Verne told someone backstage, "See, I told you a black guy can't get over" or some words to that effect. I guess he also pushed Col. DeBeers pretty hard but, to be fair, almost all wrestling promoters push racist gimmicks. It's not like he pushed him as a face.

I imagine a debate over the merits of Jesus vs Satan could get pretty heated.

I called into WOL about three years ago to ask about that and Dave said he had never heard it. So unless that comes from Russo himself it's just a dumb internet rumor.

Wrestling Observer Recap -- 1984 Yearbook

Those arena holding the Mid-South shows were full of smoke. I'd like to declare Vince the winner of the evening. -

Yes, they made him an agent for cruiserweight matches because they felt they needed at least one who wasn't in his 50s. Are steroid-related butt infections covered under his employee health insurance? -
The last time I remember hearing the "best pure athlete" stuff was Armageddon 2000. JR commented that some believe that The One Billy Gunn is the Best Pure Athlete in the WWF and Lawler responded, "What? Who said that?" I don't think JR tried that line again. Of course, considering that an Olympic gold medalist was the world champion at the time, heaping such an accolade on a man once named after the human butt seemed a little silly.
-
Since Billy Gunn was mentioned, can I mention how hilarious it is in retrospect (it was sort of baffling back then too, even to my 14-year-old self) that the WWF's plan to getting Billy over as a main eventer was changing his name to "Mr. Ass," having him come out to a Huey Lewis-esque theme song called "I'm an Ass Man," and giving him a gimmick in which he brags about the shape of his buttocks and pulls down his pink hot pants to reveal his man-thong? Man, 1999 was TERRIBLE*. *By 1999 I mean Vince Russo.

Well nobody said it wasn't smart. The point is that Vince is bitching up a storm about an arena canceling on him and now he's canceling on an arena.
-
The irony Dave was talking about is that they're also doing Smackdown in L.A. next week. So they're canceling on an arena in Colorado that they were scheduled to run on Tuesday.

Why does Irv Muchnick think Orton attempted suicide?
Boondocks Kernoodle replied to sek69's topic in Pro Wrestling
I actually enjoyed Irv's section of that four-man cash-in Benoit book that came out a few months after the murders, but that was before he started getting wacky with the Wikipedia hacker stuff. I'll still give his next book a read-through in the store but I won't buy it, I don't think. Like Jingus said, I definitely saw Babylon in real book stores. Not a bad collection of articles but I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find them all online. And the supplemental information contained in the book is quite lacking, although Von Erich sleaze junkies will be happy to know that the day before Mike Von Erich did that rambling drugged-out TV interview he double-teamed a girl with his underage brother Chris. This thread reminded me of something I saw on The History of WWE just yesterday, an incident I hadn't heard of before: WCW @ Dallas, TX - Sportatorium - September 5, 1992 During the show an elderly man, accompanied by his personal nurse, attempted to shoot Jake Roberts. The man had attended shows at the Sportatorium for 30 years without incident -
It should be noted that Murray Hodgson, who was the most notable open accuser of Patterson at the time, was completely full of shit.

So Brock stole his move and then his wife, huh.

That the people making WWE's WCW DVD were clueless about the promotion's history because all they knew of it was reading "Scott Keith-level historical material" on the internet. Not the first time Dave's taken a shot on Scott either. I imagine Meltzer got a little tired of having people e-mailing him with "Scott Keith said Vince changed the finish of HBK-Mankind in the middle of the match" or "Scott Keith said Austin was supposed to win the title at Final Four." So for speading misinformation for years, Scott deserves to be mocked. As this 12-page thread shows!

Speaking of belts, Alvarez reported in the latest F4W newsletter that WWE has barred wrestlers from wearing their belts around their waist because it reminds Vince of that old school rasslin' that he hates so much. However, I'm pretty sure I saw Eddie Colon wearing his two tag belts on Monday and hopefully he will be fined very heavily. -

Ridiculous quotes from WO.com columnists
Boondocks Kernoodle replied to sek69's topic in Megathread archive
The "bad" article is pretty...well, bad, but the "good" one is so ridiculous I figured it was trolling from one of the guys behind the 6-3-94 blog. Jeez. -

Them same guys call one of the Dragon Gate 6 man matches from ROH a classic. So really. I'm not trying to start an argument, but can I just say that I really dislike this attitude on wrestling? People like what they like. It seems that over the past few years, the "smark community" has become increasingly hostile towards anyone who enjoys highspots or "high-end offense," whatever that means. I'm aware that guys like Cena and Batista are the ones who get over with the crowd, and fans often sit on their hands during cruiserweight matches. And if I was a promoter, I'd certainly want to build around charisma and star power rather than who can do the most moves. But if I, as a dude who watches wrestling, want to say that I enjoyed the AJ/Joe/Daniels three-way more than Rock-Hogan (full disclosure: I like them both equally), what is so wrong with that? It's just personal taste.

I never would have guessed Wade was gay. Sure, he's not the picture of manliness or anything but it does surprise me. Good for him. -

Hey, if you use one of those Talkboy recorders like in Home Alone 2, Bryan will never recognize your voice.
