Wrestling thoughts that probably don't deserve
World's Worst Man replied to Coffey's topic in NMB Wrestling Archive
So I watched War Games 91 today (excellent match), and was mildly amused when Sid and Rick Steiner were caught having a conversation in the corner. And then of course, there's Sid almost killing Pillman with a powerbomb. That match is just loads of fun on many different levels. -

I definitely think a lot of Meltzer's opinions are way out there, and since he rarely justifies those opinions, it's hard to give those opinions much credence. Unpopular opinions aren't necessarily ridiculous or unsupportable, but if there's no arguments to justify them, it's really hard to think of them as anything but. -

I love when commentators use "literally". "The air is so thick you can literally cut it with a knife". "He literally took his head off with that lariat". Kind of funny. -
Sign 5 Replacements for the WWE
World's Worst Man replied to Mad Dog's topic in NMB Wrestling Archive
I've heard from people that have watched him that he's unmotivated slug. Maybe that's a myth, that just happens to double as a consensus opinion. It happens. Watching him wrestle, it'd be a logical conclusion to reach. At first, I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, figuring that maybe he was just sluggish due to being out of shape, and out of the ring for so long. But 3 months later when that excuse is no longer viable, and he's still wrestling like complete ass, I'd say laziness is the most likely explanation. -

I'm not so sure the criticism itself is the problem as much as how much of a broken record those criticisms have become. You can only hear the same old shit so much before it just becomes annoying. Especially when some people like to complain about the crowd more than talking about the actual ring product. Then again, it's only some individuals who like to keep harping on that. I guess it would be a drag for someone to make mention of it just once, and get jumped on because other people have obsessed over it so much. Such is the way of the internet I guess. -

He mentioned achievements in Japan? He'll be fired shortly I suspect. -

Just watched KENTA vs. Kenta Kobashi from NOAH's March 5 2006 show. Classic example of a really good match where the crowd just wasn't into it. They built to some great nearfalls, had some nice "counter" near falls, and the crowd just wasn't having any of it. Even Misawa vs. Morishima from that same night had no heat until they started piling up crazy amounts of offense. At least Taue vs. Marufuji had some heat, probably because they were doing some unique things. Gotta say that this show is probably going to be the show of the year, as I can't imagine a better show happening. I still have two matches left, and there's already been 3 good matches, 2 of which were really good, borderline excellent. -

John Cena is my favorite wrestler
World's Worst Man replied to Loss's topic in NMB Wrestling Archive
I never got the Cena hate myself. I realize he's terrible in the ring, but since when do most casual smarks care about wrestling ability? The past problems associated with his character are the responsibility of the WWE writers, as you can hardly blame Cena for how he was booked. As far as I can tell, Cena did as good a job as he could with what he was given. And his character has gotten more interesting since they started actually acknowledging that many people in the audience hate him. So while it's true that the negative heat he gets is "real" heat, he's done an excellent job of integrating it into his character. -
Chris Benoit vs. Fit Finlay - Judgement Day 2006 I watched this match the day after it originally aired, with, based on what I had read, the expecations that it was going to be a stiff, scrappy match. When I didn't get even close to that, I was disappointed, and it probably lessened my opinion of the match more than it should have. So I rewatched it today, with a clean slate and no specific expectations. The story of the match was vaguely defined (ie. not told all that well). As far as I could surmise, the main story elements were Benoit's comebacks after being controlled for stretches. Neither the "dominant control" portions by Finlay nor the comebacks by Benoit were particularly well done. They were solid enough, there just wasn't that extra something in them that allows for a clearly defined story. The wrestling style itself was something I'd seen many times in New Japan in the last few years, so I wasn't overly impressed with it. The matwork wasn't scrappy or hotly contested, nor were the strikes particularly stiff. The execution wasn't bad, it just wasn't even close to being good enough to gain any points. The finishing submission hold was well fought for, but came out of no where. There really wasn't much work to the finish, and that's generally something I look for in a high quality wrestling match. What it all amounted to was a good match, that wasn't any better than what one might see in a really good RAW or Smackdown match. Maybe I've been spoiled by seeing so many recent matches in a similar style that exceeded this match, but I can't in good faith rate this particular match over those, just because the promotion this match took place in doesn't normally feature that wrestling style. ***

It doesn't matter if he brings the work boots, he just isn't a very smart wrestler. He has no sense of how to pace a match that goes longer than 10 minutes, and his long-term selling is atrocious. He also isn't any good at logically building his moves. He'd be better off just having 10 minute matches, where his multitude of weaknesses are covered up. In 20+ minute matches, he's just masturbatory and contrived. I must be one of the few who is getting sick of Chris Benoit's cookie cutter matches. It doesn't help that many of the same people who praise him, are also the first to criticise ROH for being fake and contrived. I guess having the same match for 3 years is just completely natural and a sign of someone who is the best in the world. Excluding vs. Regal/Finlay, which while different than the typical, mind-numbing WWE Benoit match, end up being the same old matches that they've had against each other for years. -
TLC III was a great match. Great drama, great spots and a tremendous feel good feeling after watching it though in hindsight knowing Benoit got hurt makes the match hard to watch. No it wasn't. But thanks for your attention-seeking, pointless reply.

Bad WWE style is atrocious. Bad ECW style can be entertaining due to the spots. That's the difference. None of those TLC matches were any good, but people liked them because of the spots. But these days, the spots in WWE are laughably bad or nonexistant. To most fans, spots = good wrestling, and what's why they like ECW's "crap" but not WWE's "crap". The show was probably worse than last year's as far as good wrestling goes, but it was fun enough. I don't think we'll be seeing "good wrestling" in ECW until they bring in some of the indy guys who are familiar with different styles. Until then, it'll be WWE-style crapfests or ECW-style spotfests.

Austin vs. Benoit and Austin vs. Trips were good matches that really didn't have any big problems, but I saw nothing in them that would make me think they were anything better. Maybe I'm being too hard on them, I don't know. That's just where they sit compared to other stuff I've seen. Austin vs. Rock was incredibly overbooked, didn't make a lot of sense (no-DQ mostly), and was about 10 minutes too long considering how poor each guy's offense was. The May tag match was up there, but mostly because of the other 3 men as opposed to Austin. I just don't see anything in Austin at that time. He was able to get a reaction from the crowd by doing anything, because he was so over. But most of what he did wasn't very good, so I can't really give him credit for it. -

Kurt Angle is the most overrated wrestler OF ALL TIME. Followed closely by Steve Austin circa 2001, who never even came close to being involved in a ****+ match during that time spawn (other than the May '01 tag, which was close..). I couldn't help but chuckle at his terrible offense and overbooked matches when I finally got around to seeing a bunch of those matches. If Austin in 2001 was great, Nagata in 2001 was the best wrestler of all time, and Kawada of 1994 was some nutty, cuckoo super being who transcended time and space. -

New Japan produced the largest quantity of "good" wrestling matches in 2005. Most of it just made the cut though (meaning a lot of that was just somewhat dime-a-dozen *** matches), and they probably produce the most original TV of any company in the world, so it's not such a great distinction. NOAH and ROH would be 2nd and 3rd, although going by quantity AND quality, they both had NJPW beat. WWE produced pitifully little considering how much TV time they had. -

Indeed. I suppose a person could have like 100 matches at *****, but what's the point? I doubt that 85 of those will even be sniffing the other 15, so why rate them the same? Yea, I like to see a clear placement of a match too, if for nothing else than for personal interest. I guess what eventually gets debated are the finer points of the match as opposed to the rating, but I just like to see it for the sake of reference and curiosity. -

Here's one. Star ratings are better than vague descriptors, as they're more precise and more no-nonsense than simply saying "good, great" etc. The backlash against star ratings seems to have come about due to people not understanding that they're not some mathematical or objective formula to determine the quality of a match, just a different way of expressiong an overall opinion about a wrestling match. -

I was more referring to his NOAH work, mainly in tags, where he was absolutely brilliant in 2005. Even outside the much talked about 11/5/05 tag, he was involved in a few fantastic matches that it seems very few people actually saw. Now maybe people have seen a good amount of his recent work, I don't know. All I know is that outside of the real hardcores who actively follow NOAH, I don't see any talk of stuff like Kenta Kobashi & Makoto Hashi vs. Jun Akiyama & Yoshinobu Kanemaru (8/19/05), Mitsuharu Misawa/Kenta Kobashi/Jun Akiyama vs. Naomichi Marufuji/KENTA/Makoto Hashi (4/2/05), Takeshi Rikio & Naomichi Marufuji vs. Kenta Kobashi & KENTA (11/28/04), etc. Ironically, it seems to me like the people who overrate him haven't seen a good chunk of his work and are just going off his ROH appearances and the much talked about "spectacle" matches against Misawa and Akiyama. But likewise, the people who underrate him seem to be in the same boat. Generally, anyway. -

It's hard for me to legitimize that viewpoint when last year he was largely responsible for the best match I've seen in about 8 years, and involved in another that was probably top 5 in that same timespan. Not to mention another match in that group, from 2004. By my count, he's been involved in no less than 8 ****+ matches in the past 2 years (including the 2 best matches from 2005), many of which he played large parts in. -

Amazing what 2 matches in the past 3 years will do to a guy's reputation. -

My problem with Benoit isn't even really him, it's just how overrated and how much hyperbole is associated with him. When I see stuff like "Benoit's ring work is just as good now as it was in the 90's", it really rubs me the wrong way. When someone is so badly overrated in some circles, it becomes easy to dislike them. I don't dislike Benoit right now, but I certainly wouldn't say I like him. He's still a very good worker who's probably being held back by the promotion he's working for (as are others), but I don't really see anything from him that I would consider great. He's had a ton of good-very good matches in the WWE, but nothing I'd ever call excellent or even great. If this was 10 years ago and he was being held back in a crummy promotion, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and call him great. It's clear that 10 years ago, he was great, his ring work in New Japan/WCW proved it. But now, who really knows? He's older and less healthy now, so it's not a given that he would be able to perform at that level, even if he was in a better enviroment. So I can't say he's great just based on his potential anymore, because it's not clear how far his potential would go at this point.

Dump Matsumoto vs. Chigusa Nagayo (8/28/85) This match was a major disappointment to me. The story and drama surrounding the match was so good, but the match itself was very short and the finish was very bizarre. It was a structured fairly typically, with the heel (Dump) beating the crap out of the face (Chigusa), and every now and then, Chigusa would reverse things for a short while. Chigusa ended up bloody, and being battered by a table and eventually KO'd by a ref count that wasn't easily understood. The postmatch scene was a lot more entertaining than the match actually. Lioness Asuka trying to save Chigusa from her fate, Dump gleefully cutting the hair and gloating to the audience. Crush Gal fans crying and screaming for Dump to stop. It was really quite surreal. This is a good example of a match that draws emotion from the crowd, but not really because of anything that happens in the match. Chigusa and Dump were well-established beforehand, as was the match stipulation. The crowd knew this, and were amped from the get-go, even though the match really didn't deliver. I give Dump and Chigusa lots of credit for establishing their characters and hatred so well that they almost didn't even need to wrestle the match. The match wasn't all that good, and even if it didn't have to be, it's still disappointing to think of what might have been accomplished if it had been.

That's a sucker deal if I've ever seen one. Hell, even $30 was a sucker deal for something they do every month. $30 is 10 DVDs at ivpvideos, which could get you more great matches than WWE has produced in years.
