This may have been the toughest match to sit through on any yearbook. It was good at times, inoffensive at times, and bad at others. I'm impressed that anyone can wrestle at such a high speed for 60 minutes, and I guess if there's a positive, it's that it made both of them look good for wrestling that long at that level. It also had the epic, big match feel going for it. But I think they could have taken some of the best stuff that does admittedly work in the context of longer matches like moves being repeated out of desperation multiple times in an attempt to get a win and condensed this to 35 minutes or so and still accomplished the same result. When Toyota got the table, I just completely checked out of this, especially when Kyoko's selling of the table spot is to have a "How could you do this to me, you bitch?" look on her face. The stretch of nearfalls and slow Kyoko dominance in the last 15-20 minutes is pretty nice and salvages this some. And there is more selling than I expected toward the end (it's more generalized fatigue selling than anything, but it's still selling). If I had to explain the mentality behind this winning MOTY, it's probably the fairly strong opening and closing, with a bunch of cool spots spread out in the middle. I'd also say it's easy to tune out in the middle because there's not really a strong hook. But other than that, I don't get it either. All the Toyota/Inoue matches seem to fall into a "good, but not great" category for me. I'd love to hear from some defenders of this match, just because I think it would be interesting to get their perspective. Are there any left? If so, comment. I like it more than Ditch, but I don't think it's a classic.

DDP is at a car dealership. Funny to see this just after seeing Landell at a dealership. He buys a Mercedes for Maxx Muscle and a convertible for Kimberly before getting a Lamborghini for himself.

Buddy Landell has returned to Classy Motors, and says the only thing Bobby Blaze has in common with a Lincoln is that they were both born in a log cabin! He finally settles on a totaled car. "Is that Rain X on the windshield?" This is awesome.

Brian Christopher is out for an interview, and WOW, does his ring jacket sparkle under the TV lights. Dundee interrupts and between the two of them, the sparkling is OUT OF CONTROL. They get into it over something, but it completely went past me because I was too distracted by the jacket sparkling. I think it's that they are tag team partners that don't get along, and Christopher wants to win the tag titles from PG-13 while Dundee would prefer not to wrestle his son. Finally, PG-13 is out and they sparkle, but not quite as much. I do not question their devotion to Sparkle Motion.

Lawler has regained the YOU-nified title, beating Razor Ramon. Razor hit him with a telephone to get the win at first, but a second ref came down and pointed out what happened, forcing a restart. Sid is at ringside and distracts Razor, leading to a Lawler win. Always fun seeing WWF guys in working different roles.

If they were trying to rebuild with Hayabusa as the new ace, why didn't he win this match? I was expecting him to win based on your comments. At the same time, while Onita did win, this match wasn't about him, and all the post-match stuff had Hayabusa as the focus with Onita there to get him over as a tough guy. So maybe that's the point, but it still surprised me that he didn't win the match. I liked the siren/countdown part better in Funk/Onita, but this was a better wrestling match and nearly as good as a spectacle too. The image of them slapping each other while in a figure four with the siren going off and the powerbomb from Onita a few moments later are both iconic visuals. Hayabusa kicking out of the powerbomb after the explosion seemed to get him over in a big way with the crowd. The post-match selling is always my favorite part of any death match and it was excellent here.

Going over Santo in two straight falls is a big deal. It means they wanted to put Psicosis over strong. So if they wanted to put Psicosis over strong, laying out the match where he's being outsmarted at every turn is silly. It's not really overcoming the odds, it's more that I thought Psicosis didn't get the milage from the win that he should have.

What a weird match. I'm not really sure where to start, but I'll try. There's way too much great stuff to call this a bad match. There's way too much weird stuff to call this a great match. I'm not sure how it ends up. It's like someone took a great match, added in sprinkles of other stuff that is also great but has nothing to do with anything, then threw it all in a blender and out came this match. Psicosis beats Santo two straight, which is tough to buy considering Santo's stardom. The matwork exchanges are pretty awesome, but they don't really go anywhere worthwhile. They spend a lot time with Santo applying the headscissors and Psicosis trying to get out of it. All the counters and attempted counters are tremendous fun, but this doesn't really jive with the match results. Why is Santo dominating almost all of this match if Psicosis is going over in two straight falls and just kicking out of everything? Don't those two things contradict each other? Great wrestling -- really great wrestling -- in terms of execution, but an actively bad layout that I don't get at all.

I'm confused. What are you asking me?

Last few minutes. Bearded Muto is awesome. The heat is so through the roof and Muto's selling looks so good that I wish this was a match we would have had room to include in full. Muto hits two moonsaults to win the IWGP title and kick off what I am expecting to be quite the exciting run for him.

Black and white video set to opera music of Sandman and Woman. As the video progresses, we start getting a few color shots mixed in and the music changes to "Enter Sandman". Pretty fun, and it makes both Sandman and Woman seem like stars. These videos really set ECW apart.

Lawler has said that Bret only accepted a match with How-Could-She at In Your House to avoid accepting his challenge. Bret counters by saying he'll be happy to wrestle them both in the same night. Lawler starts doing a maniacal laugh and Vince is awfully suspicious.

Match never gets started, as Sid walks through the pyro to attack Razor and powerbomb him multiple times. Diesel finally makes the save.

And so it all begins. "Are you listening? I don't think so." Where did the fake British accent go? He was really a trendsetter for Madonna if you think about it. I should have worked that into what I wrote about Madonna's pro wrestling career.

Yes, from Lynch.

I'm just curious: is there anyone in the sports world that covers the business side of sports the same way Dave covers the business side of MMA?

Here it is in full: What a bizarre selection. Stetcher/Strangler Lewis may have been awesome, but how would anyone know? And Hogan vs Andre?
-
Why even run the poll if you don't think it's up for debate? I also enjoyed the recent poll asking the best in-ring feud of all time, with the choices being Flair/Steamboat, Misawa/Kawada, Hogan/Andre, Stetcher/Strangler Lewis and Toyota/Kong. Wh ... what?

Updates on the local TV: * Fuchi vs Kikuchi is in full here! This is the version of the match we'll use. * The Fantastics vs Kobashi/Ace match is the one that did not make NTV. We get the last 10 minutes of the match. We'll put this on because it's so rare. * Taylor vs Taue was better than I thought it would be, and will go on if there's room. Now I need to go through the original run of Samurai Classics to see what aired there that didn't air on TV. I know there was the Misawa (as Tiger Mask) match against Kobashi, but there may be more.

I would rather not use this thread to speculate on drug use from a guy who it's pretty known is clean. Please keep the focus of this thread on his work. I have no problem cracking jokes at his suit or referencing the banana girlfriend story from Eyada, but I think accusing him of drug use is a step too far. I'm probably hypocritical since I just pointed out that Nash's youthful looks are suspicious, and Dave has even pointed out when he thought people were on something. But Dave isn't a public figure in the same way wrestlers are public figures, and I don't like the idea of going there. He's always made clear that he lives cleanly, and he's given no reason for us to suspect otherwise.

There are still some All Japan matches worth seeing throughout the year, but I think the bulk of it is over now. Misawa/Taue is an all-time classic and something that should probably be considered near or at the same level as any of the GOAT All Japan matches. I haven't seen 6/9/95 in years, so with all the matches up to this point involving these four, I'm looking forward to watching it again with the strong lead-in. Tommy Rich did one of the best interviews you'll ever see in April and continues to be a highlight of the set. I have enjoyed SMW so, so much more than I did in either 1992 or 1993.
