[1995-04-06-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada
Loss replied to Loss's topic in April 1995
Kawada catches Misawa in the face with a nasty kick that breaks his orbital bone in their first exchange of the match. Give Misawa credit for toughing it out for the rest of the match. I don't know that I agree that it's not as good as the other Carny matches -- it's above Kawada/Akiyama for me for sure, and not far behind some of the others. The exchange that led to the Tiger Driver on the floor was hot, and they really focused on selling everything well. Like Ditch said, Misawa still eats quite a few kicks to the face, which was pretty unnecessary. But had the match been JIP at 2 minutes, I would not have known Misawa was injured. I'm curious other opinions on this. I may be on my own.- 11 replies

Not individually, no, but there would have been no one left to make everyone look good, and there would have been some terrible shows. Wrestling wasn't a priority in the WWF at the time, so I agree that the benefit would have been greater to WCW, but I think they would have had a really hard time keeping a crowd engaged for a three-hour show with the people that would be left.

Just Funk playing with a branding iron. Very short.

Dreamer does a blood-soaked promo saying he's coming for Raven. Very short.

Botched angle where the big Sid layout was done during commercial break. I know Shawn was off to sell the injury from Sid, but I'm not sure if there was anything more to him being gone for six weeks. I'm sure between all the technical problems at Wrestlemania the night before and this, Vince was livid.

[1995-04-02-WWF-Wrestlemania XI] Bam Bam Bigelow vs Lawrence Taylor
Loss replied to Loss's topic in April 1995
They did a pretty good job of laying this out. I guess Patterson was in the ring in case things went awry. I guess it made sense at the time because Bigelow was supposed to get a big push, but in hindsight, he should have won this match. I always thought LT coming in and winning made it seem like anyone could be a pro wrestler. -
The big answer for me is seeing Flair's plan in 1989 of WCW doing a big money WWF raid, but only going after the good workers. Imagine the WWF at that point without Bret Hart, the Rockers, Roddy Piper, Randy Savage or Curt Hennig.

[1995-04-02-WWF-Wrestlemania XI] Shawn Michaels vs Diesel
Loss replied to Loss's topic in April 1995
Shawn is accompanied by Jenny McCarthy instead of Pam Anderson. I don't know if that's because of the fight between Shawn and Tommy Lee or what. I never really heard much about that story. Also, the way every celebrity was a "friend" of Diesel was probably laying on the push way too thick. The same things to say about this match are the same things that have always been true about this match. Shawn puts on The Shawn Show and ends up sandbagging Diesel as champ, showing him up on almost every spot, and turning the live crowd on him in the process. Bret has mentioned it, and even Nash has mentioned in shoot interviews that Shawn was trying to blow him up. I also enjoy Shawn getting pissed off at all the photographers constantly being in his way and dragging them around. The only thing about this match that has changed for me is that because of the way it's worked, I think I liked it less than I ever have before.- 11 replies

[1995-04-02-WWF-Wrestlemania XI] Owen Hart & Yokozuna vs Smoking Gunns
Loss replied to Loss's topic in April 1995
Last few minutes. Yoko returned to the WWF as a mystery partner for Owen, and they beat the Gunns to win the tag titles. I really thought putting these two together was a great idea, and the dynamic was a good one. The wrestling here was a total mess and Yoko doesn't look so good. -
Regal takes Eaton shopping for a new suit! Eaton tries on some ... interesting color combinations that Regal hates before finally being made over. Funny. WCW's sense of comedy was pretty good around this time.

Yes! These were glorious. This is brought to you by Ric Flair the athlete, Ric Flair the philanthropist, Ric Flair the scholar, Ric Flair the kind and Ric Flair the just! He's accompanied by a woman named Magenta who doesn't speak. Flair's pronounciation is really strange in this. He uses the phrase "Jumpin' Jetta" and talks about nothing in particular as they show various clips of his career. As amusing as I find this segment on an isolated basis, Flair's Gone Crazy was a terrible idea. Also, his haircut makes him look like Bozo when he shakes his head. Anyway, here are the Top 10 reasons WCW should be fair to Flair. This was funnier than I expected, way better than the lame Shawn Michaels top 10 earlier in the year. 10. The Figure Four Leglock. I made it a household name! 9. Without me everyone thinks Alex Wright can dance! 8. I'm living up to my end of the bargain, I haven't wrestled since October! 7. Because I just might buy the company and fire everyone! (Humorously spelled as "everone" on the graphic) 6. I'm still on everyone's mind ... just listen to Hogan and Savage! 5. Women are going crazy ... look what happened at Uncensored ... a half crazed woman came out of the stands and beat him up! 4. If I'm not in WCW ... what are they going to do ... close down Space Mountain? 3. The whole world's going through Flair withdrawal! 2. I'm a kiss stealing, wheeling dealing, limousine riding, jet flying son of a gun! 1. Whooo!

[1995-04-01-WCW-Saturday Night] WCW Board of Directors meeting
Loss replied to Loss's topic in April 1995
The Board of Directors vote on whether they should reinstate Flair. The board members are: * Gary Juster, who thinks Flair should honor his word * Tatiana De Paz of Spain, who also thinks Flair should honor his word * Dieter Krap of Germany, who thinks Flair should be reinstated * Kensuke Ishikawa (Sonny Onoo) of Japan, who says HAI * Christine LeBlance of France, who abstains This makes the decision a tie, so at this point, Flair is not reinstated to WCW. Based on Sonny Onoo's name being gimmicked, I'm assuming the others are too, which makes this whole segment absolutely hilarious.- 6 replies

Last few minutes. Oddly, Smothers does a kick and Ross starts talking about how there's probably a fancy name for it that he doesn't know and someone is bound to write someone about it. Lots happening around the ring and New Jack ends up pinning Smothers after Mustafa runs in to help him. Post-match, Cornette gets buried in a Malcolm X flag.
-
The Gangstas walk through a graveyard to prove that they aren't scared of the Undertaker. Suddenly, the camera effects are black and white and everyone is acting all scared. Weird seeing this in SMW. New Jack wants to dig some graves to make a point, which is kind of extreme. Everyone takes off running, and "Don't Fear The Reaper" plays to hype the Undertaker coming in. Then, we get Undertaker and Paul Bearer doing an interview to put some fear in them before finally cutting back to the "studio" (for lack of a better word) for a Cornette interview with Jim Ross.

Dundee comes out to clear something up -- he offered Lawler a shot and Lawler wasn't available due to WWF commitments. So he fulfilled his obligation to Lawler, case closed. Then he switches gears to Razor Ramon, and says he's wrestled everyone Razor Ramon's size and things will be different when he comes to Mid South Coliseum. This is a really good time period for Dundee. This promo is exceptionally good.
-
Jerry Lawler is at home, flanked by Coca Cola memorabilia, and talks about an upcoming casino battle royal (I see what they did there). Then Lawler switches into Dundee talk. He's frustrated that Dundee promised him the first shot and he didn't get it. Now he's putting it up again and Razor Ramon is getting the shot instead. Lawler warns Dundee not to lose the belt to someone from the WWF.

The Carnival matches have all been tremendous fun. I think because of the 30-minute time limit, the matches are faster-paced than normal. So far, this seems to be a year the women are controlling, and I am curious if that's still the case after a few more months. I still feel like the best of every promotion hasn't happened yet, which is a good thing. Dundee is a tremendous interview, and I'm looking forward to seeing Ric Flair get back in the ring eventually.

Last few minutes. Terry Funk runs down to cut Raven's handcuffs at ringside right before Dreamer pins Stevie Richards. Raven pretends to still be handcuffed, then ambushes Dreamer and pins him. Stevie tries to help Raven beat up Dreamer and gets pushed away. Raven handcuffs him with both hands to the ring ropes then hits Dreamer with a chairshot.

[1995-03-27-WWF-Raw] Bret Hart vs Owen Hart (No Holds Barred)
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1995
I'm not sure why they called this a No Holds Barred match considering they worked absolutely no different based on the gimmick. Pretty good, intense match to blow off the Bret/Owen feud, but not really anything worth going out of your way to see. Obviously, they have had way better matches.- 10 replies

Todd Pettengill narrates a video package recapping the Diesel/Shawn Michaels feud. I enjoy Vince and Todd Pettengill sitting together hyping Wrestlemania for some weird reason. Vince is amazed that you can just go online and discuss Wrestlemania on Prodigy! This was a warning sign of the current social media obsession. Then, we get a Salt N Pepa recording session and get to see Vince dance to "Shoop"! Then, we jump to a Bam Bam Bigelow/Lawrence Taylor feud recap. Mongo on Raw is largely forgotten. This is the WWF's version of All Access. Something tells me Dave didn't go as crazy over it at the time as he would now.

[1995-03-26-WWF-Action Zone] Men on a Mission and Smoking Gunns
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1995
Men on a Mission want the Smoking Gunns to come out so they can apologize to them for "turning" on them the week before, then they destroy them. Oscar doesn't seem to agree and he quickly becomes history. Not sure why they wouldn't just run the turn the first time. Thus begins the big Mabel push on top that would culminate at Summerslam. -
[1995-03-26-AJW-Wrestling Queendom: Victory] Manami Toyota vs Aja Kong
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1995
This was a great match. It's probably my favorite Toyota singles match to this point. It's not without its flaws, but nothing is so glaring that it completely takes the match off the rails. I do wish AJW would stay away from table spots completely. They're above it and don't need props, and I end up just getting annoyed that they aren't sold in the long term. Kong's back work on Toyota is just fantastic -- if only it hadn't immediately become a non-issue when Toyota started her comeback. (Not that I would expect anything different.) But as far as big moments that build drama and come to an exciting climax, this is quality stuff. Toyota dethroning the champion of 2+ years is a great moment.- 14 replies
