  1. The last few minutes. Giant chokeslams Luger through Ric Flair's VIP table. For whatever reason, these two had really good chemistry in the ring. Flair, Woman and Liz freak out over it. The announcers are in a hush and play up that Luger has proven himself as a standup guy, which spells the end of the whole face/heel at the same time thing Luger had been doing for severa months. Luger has to be helped up. Cool to see a table spot actually sold.
  2. Ah, the days when a Michaels/Helmsley match didn't mean they were going to go 45 minutes and be all self-congratulatory about how great they are. This is a good TV match. Not as good as I'd remembered, but still good. As you'd expect, Shawn sells a lot for his friend who's getting a good opportunity to face the world champ in a long TV match. Seems to be the start of the Mr. Perfect angle with Helmsley, as he watches on from ringside.
  3. Davey Boy attacks Shawn on the Persian Gulf and then throws him in the ocean and tries to drown him.
  4. Goldust interrupts and tries to put the moves on Undertaker. "That's driving me crazy. What kind of cologne is that. Is that Embalming Fluid #5?" Goldust also tells Undertaker he'll lay in his casket anytime and finally Undertaker has enough and goes after him, but then Mankind attacks Undertaker while Goldust looks on. Then Goldust gets on top of Undertaker, but he sits up and Goldust takes off running.
  5. DDP is washing people's windows when they stop their cars and trying to charge them. The cops show up and he takes off. Funny. In the next video, someone encourages him to get in a limo. Ah, the mysterious benefactor we never learned about.
  6. RVD is pretty green here, so take what you know about RVD and Sabu and add RVD being green into it, and there you go. Important match in the series, but not particularly good.
  7. I think this is my favorite ECW match, and maybe the best stateside match so far this year. I love that they were doing actual wrestling for a large portion of the opening, and doing it well. The spot where Scorpio is about to do the dive on the table but Douglas gets off the table and comes out on the other side of the ring is great. I also liked the weird guardrail suplex thing Douglas did. Scorpio laying out Douglas for being kind of douchey in the post-match was perfect. Great match!
  8. I'm kinda numb to the standard ECW brawls at this point, but this deserves to be on here. The Stevie Richards run in and attack by Beulah and Kimona was the best part.
  9. As long as these ads ran, I thought this had to be something huge, but ... yeah.
  10. One of the better juniors matches on Nitro. Liger and Malenko work well together, and the crowd got really involved. Liger always got over well in the U.S.
  11. "Shawn Michaels is a homewrecker. Shawn Michaels ruined my marriage." The chyron then reads "Claims Shawn Michaels ruined life and marriage". It later changes to "Allegedly Had A Torrid Affair with WWF Champion Shawn Michaels". A shadowed woman with terrible hair discusses how Shawn propositioned her while she was married and seduced her into sleeping with him. There may or may not have been a slight implication that she was Elizabeth.
  12. DDP is doing something or other, it's hard to tell because it's shot from a distance. But he's broke.
  13. Onita has the heart of a chicken, according to Funk's pre-match promo. The match looks like a movie scene most of the time. There is an awesome visual at one point of Masato Tanaka doing the spinning toehold on Funk while a siren goes off in the background, and the shots of everyone laying around after the explosion are great. The explosions are so over the top that it's hard for me to be too horrified at all of it. Toyota/Kudo was better, but this was fine.
  14. I should also add that the post-match selling and drama is possibly better than the match itself. I'm a bit conflicted over watching something this borderline barbaric knowing where wrestling is in 2010 and being entertained by it.
  15. Brilliant match! If I was doing a comp of my favorite all-time matches, this would probably be on it. I'll be surprised if this isn't the best women's match of the year, but this also might end up being the best gimmick match of the year. FMW is a lot more thoughtful than you'd think. It's gimmicky, but the matches tend to have really good psychology and build to the crazy moments. I love all the long, drawn out selling after big moves or events.
  16. I'm guessing Cactus agreed to work this show before signing with the WWF? Decent as far as these types of matches go, but I've seen him in way better.
  17. I think the Shawn Michaels theme music is the worst theme music ever used by a wrestler for any length of time. It was especially stupid post-comeback when he had nothing to do with that persona anymore. Hearing the Sherri version makes me remember how it was written with the idea of being overly annoying to begin with.
  18. Time for some revised rankings, this time with the month of April included. I'm going to start taking off some of these matches on the bottom that didn't really stand out to me at all. #1 - El Hijo del Santo & Atlantis & El Dandy & Lizmark vs Blue Panther & Felino & Dr Wagner Jr & Negro Casas (CMLL 03/15/96) #2 - Shinjiro Otani vs El Samurai (NJPW 01/21/96) #3 - Steve Williams vs Akira Taue (AJPW 04/20/96) #4 - Toshiaki Kawada vs Akira Taue (AJPW 03/31/96) #5 - El Hijo del Santo & El Dandy & Dos Caras vs Blue Panther & Apolo Dantes & Emilio Charles Jr (CMLL 02/16/96) #6 - Mitsuharu Misawa & Kenta Kobashi & Jun Akiyama vs Toshiaki Kawada & Johnny Ace & Gary Albright (AJPW 04/20/96) #7 - Mitsuharu Misawa vs Kenta Kobashi (AJPW 03/31/96) #8 - Great Sasuke & Tiger Mask IV & Shiryu vs Taka Michinoku & Super Delphin & Gran Naniwa (Michinoku Pro 03/16/96) #9 - Dynamite Kansai & Takako Inoue vs Mayumi Ozaki & Kyoko Inoue (JWP 04/20/96) #10 - Black Tiger & El Samurai & Gran Hamada vs Shinjiro Otani & Koji Kanemoto & Dean Malenko (NJPW 02/25/96) #11 - Manami Toyota vs Sakie Hasegawa (AJW 03/20/96) #12 - Nobuhiko Takada vs Shiro Koshinaka (NJPW 03/01/96) #13 - Psicosis vs Ultraman (AAA 03/16/96) #14 - Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels (WWF Wrestlemania XII 03/31/96) #15 - Jushin Liger vs Shinjiro Otani (NJPW 03/17/96) #16 - Shinya Hashimoto & Junji Hirata vs Yoshihiro Takayama & Yoji Anjo (NJPW 02/25/96) #17 - Rey Misterio Jr vs Juventud Guerrera (AAA 03/16/96) #18 - Shawn Michaels vs Owen Hart (WWF In Your House VI 02/18/96) #19 - Vader vs Antonio Inoki (NJPW 01/04/96) #20 - Jushin Liger & Black Tiger vs Shinjiro Otani & Koji Kanemoto (NJPW 02/15/96) #21 - Shawn Michaels vs Diesel (WWF Good Friends Better Enemies 04/28/96) #22 - Steven Regal vs Fit Finlay (WCW Uncensored 03/24/96) #23 - PG-13 vs Tracy Smothers & Jesse James Armstrong (USWA TV 02/17/96) #24 - El Dandy & El Hijo del Santo & Silver King vs Negro Casas & Apolo Dantes & El Satanico (CMLL 02/10/96) #25 - Hayabusa & Masato Tanaka & Koji Nakagawa vs W*ING Kanemura & Mitsuhiro Matsunaga & Hidoh (FMW 01/10/96) #26 - Jerry Lawler vs Jeff Jarrett (USWA TV 04/20/96) #27 - Rey Misterio Jr vs Juventud Guerrera (ECW Big Ass Extreme Bash 03/09/96) #28 - Cactus Jack vs Mikey Whipwreck (ECW Big Ass Extreme Bash 03/09/96) #29 - Sabu vs 2 Cold Scorpio (ECW 04/19/96) #30 - Manami Toyota vs Yumiko Hotta (AJW 01/22/96) #31 - Manami Toyota vs Kyoko Inoue (AJW 03/31/96) #32 - Psicosis vs Ultraman (AAA 01/18/96) #33 - 2 Cold Scorpio vs Sabu (ECW Cyberslam 02/17/96) #34 - Jushin Liger vs Koji Kanemoto (NJPW 01/04/96) #35 - PG-13 vs Tracy Smothers & Jesse James Armstrong (USWA TV 01/20/96) #36 - Manami Toyota & Mariko Yoshida & Kaoru Ito & Yumi Fukawa vs Takako Inoue & Kyoko Inoue & Chapparita Asari & Tomoko Watanabe (AJW 02/12/96) #37 - 1-2-3 Kid vs Hakushi (WWF Monday Night RAW 02/05/96) #38 - Genichiro Tenryu vs Tatsumi Fujinami (NJPW Battle Formation 04/29/96) #39 - Jushin Liger & El Samurai & Gran Hamada vs Shinjiro Otani & Koji Kanemoto & Taka Michinoku (NJPW 04/05/96) #40 - Rey Misterio Jr vs Juventud Guerrera (AAA 01/31/96) #41 - Wild Pegasus vs Shinjiro Otani (NJPW 03/20/96) #42 - Shinya Hashimoto vs Kazuo Yamazaki (NJPW 01/04/96) #43 - Ric Flair vs The Giant (WCW Monday Nitro 03/25/96) #44 - Ric Flair vs Randy Savage (WCW SuperBrawl VI 02/11/96) #45 - Mitsuhiro Matsunaga & W*ING Kanemura & Hido vs Masato Tanaka & Ricky Fuji & Tetsuhiro Kuroda (FMW 02/23/96) #46 - Nobuhiko Takada vs Shinya Hashimoto (NJPW Battle Formation 04/29/96) #47 - Aja Kong vs Combat Toyota (FMW 01/10/96) #48 - Shawn Michaels vs 1-2-3 Kid (WWF Monday Night RAW 03/04/96) #49 - Steven Regal vs Fit Finlay (WCW Saturday Night 04/27/96) #50 - Atlantis & Lizmark & El Hijo del Santo vs El Felino & Bestia Salvaje & El Satanico (CMLL 40th Anniversary Show 04/19/96) #51 - Jushin Liger vs Black Tiger (NJPW 02/03/96) #52 - Road Warriors vs Rick & Scott Steiner (WCW Monday Nitro 03/11/96) #53 - Juventud Guerrera & Psicosis vs Volador & El Mexicano (AAA 01/12/96) #54 - Shawn Michaels vs Leif Cassidy (WWF Monday Night RAW 03/25/96) #55 - Ric Flair vs Randy Savage (WCW Monday Nitro 02/19/96) #56 - Randy Savage vs Chris Benoit (WCW Monday Nitro 02/05/96) #57 - Ric Flair & Arn Anderson vs Hulk Hogan & Randy Savage (WCW Monday Nitro 01/08/96) #58 - Bret Hart & Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels & Diesel (WWF MSG 03/17/96) #59 - Jerry Lawler & Brian Christopher vs Doug Gilbert & Tommy Rich (USWA TV 02/10/96) #60 - Sabu vs Stevie Richards (ECW House Party 01/05/96) #61 - Tsuyoshi Kohsaka vs Yoshihisa Yamamoto (RINGS 04/26/96)
  19. The Blue Meanie does Shakespeare and then sings the Shawn Michaels theme, Bill Alfonso asks if he looks like a used car salesman, The Gangstas spray paint something and then get attacked by the Eliminators outside and spray-painted themselves.
  20. Giant wins the WCW World title. This is a pretty bad match, and the end of the Flair megapush, as he's just another wrestler among many for most of the rest of the year. Feels like a Flair burial because it was such a short match and Giant no-sold a figure four.
  21. Another super-stiff match between these two, and a cool set-up. Hell of a brawl, a little overrated in hindsight compared to their other matches, but it's unique, so I understand why it stands out. End of a really fun feud.
  22. I'd love to hear whose idea it was to have Jose Lothario walk around behind Shawn Michaels all the time. Was it an attempt to make Shawn a draw with Latino fans? Seriously, I don't understand, and I think it hurt him. I am already starting to get a little sick of him at this point. He doesn't feel stale yet, but it seems like he's a guy without longevity. Interesting, because I don't remember thinking like that at the time. Anyway, I do like this segment. Jim Cornette, Davey Boy Smith, and wife Diana accuse Shawn of propositioning Diana the night before at the PPV. Cornette calls Shawn a pervert and a fornicator and when Diana says "I know you want me", Shawn tells her not to flatter herself. She slaps him in the face, and the Shawn/Davey Boy brawl is on. Cornette is AWESOME here. I did like this angle a lot.
  23. A fan submits a video that looks like an ECW segment at first of DDP on the streets begging for money. He's holding up a sign that says "I Need A Drink! And This Is The Truth!" DDP breaks his camera. The guy says tabloids are contacting him offering money, and he wants WCW to reimburse him for the damaged camera.
  24. Awesome match! Fun to see a match this heated in front of this many people, and the match seemed much shorter than it was because it flew by. It was a little one-sided though. Hashimoto targeting Takada's leg felt like a call back to the Muto match in October, which is why the crowd popped so huge when Hashimoto locked in the figure four. Hashimoto doesn't have as many matches as many guys who are on this set, but he was as good as anyone in 1996.
  25. Pretty compelling match. Fujinami is a bloody mess, to a point where this match is hard to watch at times. Still, Tenryu's shots looked great, and his casual facial expressions, not at all phased by the incredible amount of blood loss, are great. Tenryu makes fairly easy work of him. Not competitive enough to be a truly great match, but worth seeing.
