Hashimoto and Yamazaki is the match-up to watch out for. Those facial expressions early on from Hashimoto staring a hole through Yamazaki are pretty awesome. They end up getting in quite the brawl, with Hashimoto shoving the ref down a few times. There's also a huge difference in heat every time they lock up. Awesome heat, drama and action here.

I get to see Liger lose a match and Eddy have a moment in one fell swoop. This is a bit in the afterglow of Benoit/Eddy the night before, but it's still an excellent match, and to this point, probably the biggest moment of Eddy's career. Liger sells the finish for a long time afterward and gives him a tremendous match to get him over. My comments are all about the booking because that's what my favorite thing about this is, but the wrestling is pretty great too.

Do any of these NOT feature The Eliminators? Divine Brown walks around backstage and slaps around Stevie Richards. The chyron calls her a personal friend of Bill Alfonso! (She's the prostitute Hugh Grant got caught with, for those unaware.) ECW seems to be slipping by this point, as they have less stars and storylines to feature than they did earlier in the year.

Pillman's first post-accident appearance. More of an angle than a match, as Pillman challenges Whipwreck and Mikey slaps him, leading to RVD jumping him and making quick work of him. Then we get a music video recapping the match that's almost as long as the match itself (??) and Joey Styles interviews Pillman from ringside, who is sitting in his wheelchair.

Had Chris Benoit never killed his wife and son, editing this yearbook would have been much tougher than it was already. This feud probably took the hardest hit of all. Benoit and Eddy had about a dozen really strong TV matches throughout the year, and almost all of them were really good. But this is the one that felt essential, the one that's the best showcase for Eddy, and also the best match. There's a nice WCW-style entrance ramp that they take advantage of for a few spots, and then we get into the wear down sleepers, which are the best part of this match, as Benoit goes right to it every time Eddy starts to string together any offense. Eventually, Eddy is incredibly sympathetic and the crowd is chanting "Tiger, Tiger". I feel comfortable calling this the best singles match Benoit ever had, and maybe in Eddy's top handful as well.

I loved this. My first instinct was to compare this to the legendary '92 match. This isn't that match. This is not in the same universe as that match. But this is still a really nice match. Samurai looks great here, doing an amazing tope suicida and generally dominating Liger, who does some great selling and lets some of that classic Liger personality resurface that I haven't seen in his matches in a few months. There's an even better example of that coming up in a few days in fact, but this one is really good too. Liger getting a flash pin is a little unusual for NJ juniors booking, but it works here, because the idea seemed to be put over that the match could have gone either way more so than making Liger the clear victor. I still wouldn't mind seeing Liger lose a few matches here and there, but I guess his being protected, like with anyone, is one of the reasons he became a star. These two are gold together.

Pretty famous segment from Warrior's comeback. Warrior wears a baseball cap for the first time in his life and Lawler presents him with an INCREDIBLE drawing of himself. Warrior isn't very gracious about the gift, so Lawler breaks it over his head. I also have to mention the awesomely cheesy King of the Ring video before this match starts with Lawler in hell being beat up by Elvis.

Scott Hall brings Kevin Nash in to help him take over WCW! Aside from calling the word play an "adjective", Nash actually does what may be the best promo of his life. Bischoff promises Hall and Nash he'll get them their three guys if they can show up at the Great American Bash. Great segment, and wow WCW really hit these early segments perfectly.

Pretty okay match. SUPER HOT crowd, which the matches between old NWA stars almost always had. Luger and Giant have a fun brawl with Sting and Scott Steiner helping him out after the match and Giant does a really good promo.

A Giant/Scott Norton match is joined in progress. Norton gets chokeslammed on the floor and then pinned. He starts to go after Norton again post-match but Luger comes in and stops him and they have a fun brawl. Giant tries to chokeslam him again on the VIP table, but Luger kicks him low to get out of it and then hits him over the head with a champagne bucket. Giant screams and goes to chase Luger, and Luger joins Bischoff and Heenan at the announce booth. Luger does a pretty good promo. I thought this did a really good job at building Luger as a challenger at the Great American Bash. Then we get a quick segment of the Nasty Boys giving Dennis Rodman a Nasty Boys t-shirt, and another clip of Kevin Greene promoting the Bash tag on the Tonight Show. NWO or no NWO, WCW was on the right track and was getting much better at promoting themselves by this point. Then, we get a super cheesy video recapping the build for the Flair/Arn vs Mongo/Greene match.

Lawler has been walking the line, but he's edging closer to being a full-fledged heel as time goes on. Before the match, they show a clip of Lawler/Dundee vs Cyberpunks from a West Helena house show where Jamie Dundee lost a fall to Lawler and had to leave the USWA. Now, Wolfie D comes out and challenges Dundee to another Loser Leaves Town match right here, right now, so we get a studio match. Dundee loses this one so now Dundee has to leave town!

Another great All Japan tag, with Akiyama scoring the big win. There were probably just a handful few too many nearfalls for my tastes in the end, but the match worked well enough that that's nit picking. Also seems to be a story developing over time in these matches of Misawa protecting Akiyama in spots and clearing the way for him to take the big win.

I prefer to call it an identity crisis. Wrestling was changing and they knew it, but they weren't sure how to respond initially, because last time this happened, they were the ones in the driver's seat initiating the changes. They were throwing a few things out there to see what would stick and getting rid of the things that didn't. More so than 1994-1995, 1996 is a transitional year for the WWF as they figure out a way forward that works. It got worse before it got better.

What's this, is Otani building some momentum after a rough start to the year? Very good match, as these two seem to always work well together.

Scott Hall shows up again at the broadcast booth and tells "Ken Doll" to relax. Sting steps up to Hall and wants to fight. Hall throws his toothpick in Sting's face and Sting slaps him HARD. The police show up and try to escort Hall away and he manages to say before he leaves that he has a BIG surprise for WCW next week. Bischoff is great here. "Next week?"

Vince McMahon interviews Goldust from his "den". Goldust quotes The Color Purple to start out, which is really funny. Someone should do a YouTube montage of all of Goldust's movie quotes. Goldust mentions that he gave Ahmed the breath of life. Goldust talks about how the taste of chocolate in one's mouth is exhilarating and starts suggestively eating a candy bar! Wild.

Obviously, Liger is awesome, but I'm a little detached from him by this point. It feels like he wins too much and while he delivered a good match here, I think the U.S. fans kept waiting on him to do some crazy spot that never came. Liger's matches lose suspense for me sometimes during this period because he doesn't really lose. I compare this to the tag match on the same show, where the guys felt compelled to do a showcase match because they knew they might have a lot of fans watching them that don't follow them regularly. Liger and Sasuke didn't really do the intro to New Japan juniors match that you'd expect.

This is amazing! Utterly amazing spotfest, not so much for the spots (although they are impressive), but for the rhythm, and the creativity in putting together spots, and also for the really nice face/heel alignment. Whether he is or not, Psicosis sure does seem like the best wrestler in the world here. I LOVE the sequence where he works with Ultimo Dragon and Ultimo keeps getting out of the way at the very last second. Nice blend of comedy, highspots and bumping with everything hit beautifully. This seems to be a great "So what is it that you like so much about wrestling?" match to show people, because it's very accessible and fun, and probably a low-end MOTYC.

Good match. Maybe a little overhyped, but good to see Austin in his first full-length match on the set. It's hard not to compare any strap match to Sting/Vader, and this isn't a favorable comparison, but maybe that isn't completely fair. Well done finish, in the sense that the story was that Austin was taking a dive to get rid of DiBiase and he executes it with enough ambiguity to make it work. Ted DiBiase gets a "Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Hey-Hey-Hey-Goodbye" sendoff. Allow me to go all PWI for a second: Down on his luck and plotting his next move, DiBiase calls Scott Hall the next morning and asks him if he needs any funding for his WCW takeover and if there's anything he can do to help.

Really good babyface match with lots of nice spots from both guys, who seem to enjoy working together. After the match, Scott Hall approaches Bischoff and talks a little smack. Intriguing first night.
