What WAS the biggest WCW PPV each year in the Bischoff reign?
Loss replied to thebrainfollower's topic in Pro Wrestling
How was Hogan-Savage an afterthought in 1996? That got tons of TV hype and was supposedly in the books to headline that show for months, even before Hogan turned or they thought of turning Hogan. -
He had some good early 80s Memphis matches too. The ones that stand out from memory were expiration of time studio matches against Steve Keirn and Bill Dundee from 1982.

They actually didn't escape a lawsuit for how they treated Missy Hyatt, but the terms of the settlement were not disclosed, nor is Missy Hyatt allowed to talk about it publicly.

Has anyone seen the 24/7 ones? That should tell us what we need to know about the master quality.

Please be careful not to get so wrapped up in that point that when Benoit is doing something to the contrary, you can't see it. We have got to drop these "this wrestler is always this way" narratives that I've seen dominating a lot of conversation around here lately. It eventually creates a template where the conversation automates itself.

I think it's reductive to say Benoit didn't sell or was exclusively about action. It also creates a false paradigm between Benoit and Lawler, as if wrestling can only be full of Benoits or full of Lawlers.

I personally won't weigh stuff beyond the ring work, but the founding principle seemed more about democracy and inclusion than any universal standard. For that reason, I say if brainfollower wants to include promos and other factors in his list, he should be able to do so. There were outliers who were factoring in drawing power and such in the original Smarkschoice poll too. Like for me, I also consider factors like the ability to get over, have good feuds and influence others. There are ex-in-ring factors in each of those categories, but I'm more focused on the in-ring aspects of getting over, having good feuds and influencing others. For some, it's not a factor at all.

And Rock wouldn't make my list. A great performer, but not really a great wrestler.

First of all, I meant to say Nikki and not Brie. I see people rave about Nikki Bella's in-ring work on this board all the time, so that particular comparison doesn't seem nearly as asinine. Second, you seem to be encompassing a far more broad idea when it comes to ranking, which is fine, but I'm not seeing much about her ring work. It's more about her overall sense of accomplishment. Fair enough, and you did mention Hogan placing in your top 20. Hopefully, Bruno, The Sheik, Dusty, Graham and Nikita Koloff make the list too.

I'm also not convinced of the historical shittiness of U.S. women's wrestling. I mean, sure, it's probably the case, but I suspect the biggest change is the improved presentation. NWA Classics has Debbie Combs vs Donna Day in a terrific match. Not a very good match on a curve, but an actual very good match by any standard, one even more impressive because they were able to stop the catcalls and build a nice reaction. I wish we had more long matches from wrestlers like Debbie Combs -- it might reflect well, it might not. But I can say I don't *recall* (not that they don't exist, I just don't recall) any matches where Trish worked the mat like they did, or flipped the crowd like they did. And I see something like an old Alundra Blayze vs Bull Nakano match which blew away your average Trish match in terms of wrestling skill on display and had comparable heat to something like the Trish-Victoria Chicago Street Fight match.

For the record, I wasn't trying to provoke you by asking that question. I was just interested in understanding more about her case and how you see her in comparison to anyone who could reasonably be compared to her. I agree that Trish was a character people cared about during a popular period for wrestling.

How does Trish stand out from Nattie Neidhart, AJ Lee or Brie Bella?

The best thing about Liger is that he had a deserved rep as a great high flyer, and that played a huge part in getting him over. But he actually didn't fly all that much, and it had zero to do with him being great. Liger was mostly about matwork and the role of the ace.

Those should mostly if not entirely be digitized since they aired on 24/7. They also said at the Vegas announcement that at launch their entire home video library would be there, even though it wasn't.

Piper Goes Into Business For Himself, Havoc 1996

They did a great job building it, it had been over 10 years since they locked up and it was with a fresh dynamic because of Hogan's turn and it being a new company. So no, not at all. -
This was a request made a long time ago by some people here that I would love to actually implement. Unfortunately, I've been emailing our host contact about this for a year and he's not getting back to me, so I'm thinking of other ways to accomplish a similar outcome. Maybe it just means we have a separate site away from PWO for chat or something along those lines. Any suggestions on how to implement? I'm also open to the idea of not being the one running it.

I agree that "Tater Tots" was stupid and it would have been embarrassing had a non-fan been in the room, but one of the WWF's top-drawing heels of the 80s played to "Paula!" chants. Another one was often accused of wearing a skirt. Somehow, they've made heels like that effective in the past, so I do think it's worth trying to figure out the difference.

We don't need a thread this specific, no, but no reason we can't start this as a thread about Referee Factoids or something along those lines.

The idea behind adding all the territory footage was to see if it led to a spike in Christmastime subscribers, according to the WON. Of course, how would anyone know that this footage has been added considering that they crowdsource the hype on social media? Do they just expect people to know every time they add something? Not everyone who follows this stuff is like us (a vast understatement).

Hogan I think also rightfully saw his role as the guy to keep the segment on focus. It doesn't mean Piper was sandbagging him as much as I think it means Hogan was really in a zone at this point and knew exactly what he needed to do to make everything work. -
The issue with any American woman on the ballot in my mind is that Japan had such a deep talent pool of women who were good or great workers for a long time. So I'm willing to hear the case, but let's compare Trish to Aja Kong, Akira Hokuto, Manami Toyota, Chigusa Nagayo and others. If that seems unfair, let's compare Trish to Judy Martin, Leilani Kai, Sherri Martel, Wendi Richter and Madusa. I'm not completely sure she trumps any of them, or if she just benefits from being decent in a time period where the division was presented with Sable and Debra as the ideal.

I would love to be on such a show as well.

I hope she doesn't work "stratusfaction" into real-life conversations. On second thought, I hope she does.
