Mick Foley has had enough of the Dude Love gimmick. He's upset that Goldust became the number one contender last week considering their respective track records. He has also been put in a match against Terry Funk tonight. He'll be damned if he's going to throw away his entire career by sucking up to Steve Austin and that he's no longer going to bump and grind in front of second rate strippers while his wife and kids watch at home. He also vows to never work in his Dude Love gear again. Foley then demands that Vince come out. Vince gets a really loud set of boos and Foley makes clear that Vince will never again make him dress like a horse's ass. Vince is awesome. He claims that the match against Terry Funk is not a punishment but a reward. He's giving him an opportunity to re-assert himself tonight and ends up slapping Mick. All of this brings Austin out. Austin walks right by Mick and makes a beeline for Vince and destroys the Love Shack set, which Foley doesn't seem too bothered by at all, but Vince is amazing selling this, even grabbing the ring bell like he's prepared to fight. This was a great, great segment.

This is going to be incredibly limited because my viewing has basically been limited to the first few months of 2011 and the first few months of 2013, as far as viewing wrestling consistently and on a global scale. But having said that, here are a handful of picks. 1st Tier Dick Togo vs Antonio Honda (DDT Sweet Dreams 01/30/11) Rush vs El Terrible (CMLL 01/22/13) John Cena vs CM Punk (WWE Monday Night RAW 02/25/13) 2nd Tier Claudio Castagnoli vs El Generico (PWG 01/29/11) Elimination Chamber (WWE 02/20/11) Bobby Zavala & Disturbio vs Leono & Tiger Blanco (CMLL 01/01/13) The Shield vs John Cena, Sheamus & Ryback (WWE Elimination Chamber 02/17/13)

As much as I didn't like the promo, if Brock beats him and this was successful in creating doubt over the outcome when we look back on it, then it was the right call. I suspect it's more meta-booking where they had him act like he always does to troll the audience, and because they want people to think he's winning by acting like he always acts after losing. It's strange because I don't think at this point selling a show on the understood promise of John Cena beating Brock Lesnar is going to be very effective. Selling a show on Cena getting massacred again would probably work though.

Please don't ever snap, Eduardo. That would make me sad.

This is the third poster we've had in the last few months who has suddenly gone insane out of nowhere and tried to get banned. Is it something in the water?
-
I'm not sure what caused him to suddenly lose his mind, but he's outta here. I deleted all of the evidence, so a lot of you will have no idea what this is even about.

Rick wants Scott to come out and face him. Scott - still doing his "Superstar" Scotty Steiner gimmick - comes out on crutches. These guys are both horrible talkers and this is such an obvious angle. The NWO means nothing to Scott, yet he is wearing an NWO t-shirt. Come on guys, at least put some effort into this. Scott tries to feign tears and this is HORRIBLE.

DDP, wearing a bullrope around his neck, attacks Raven and the Flock in the dressing room before dragging him out in front of the crowd. I crack up when he makes the "Bang!" motion and explosions go off because how in the hell was that coordinated? This crowd LOVES DDP. Raven cuts him off with a low blow and this goes back and forth a few times. This was a hot brawl that built up their PPV match well.

Jericho starts a tradition of ripping up signs of fans that are supporting him. They show an old interview of Dean talking about his relationship with his father, and how his dad must be rolling in his grave. This is a scathing heel promo from Jericho - really great! Jericho then brings out his opponent, Bore Us Malenko, a guy parodying Dean Malenko by constantly making circular motions on his wrists. Jericho works a faux competitive match, even rolling this guy on top of him so he can have miracle kickouts. Hilarious! It takes some time to get the crowd into this, but we finally get a "Jericho Sucks" chant, although admittedly it's weak. I am guessing this was a little too high concept for this crowd, or they were just there to see the stars.

The effects in this video are really, really bad. This vignette manages to look expensive and cheap at the same time.

These three have no chemistry with each other at all. They interrupt a Kidman vs Scott Putski match and attack both guys. Nash says Hogan and Bischoff have taken Scott Hall off of TV. Nash does kind of a rambling interview that is really more about showing off the new red and black NWO logo. They announce their newest member as Curt Hennig, just to make this group have even less chemistry than they already did. Hennig ended up being a swerve in the long run, which is for the best. Brian Adams has a problem with Hennig jumping and Konnan challenges him to a match later tonight. Meanwhile, Nash wants Luger in the ring tonight.

Nitro went two hours on May 27, 1996. I think the May 20 show went a little longer than usual as a teaser too.

Who are these guys people talk about that milk injuries? Seriously, I can't name a specific wrestler with that rep, but such things are always talked about in vague terms. Shane Douglas does a total self-parody interview, talking about how Dick Flair sucks Eric Bischoff's ass and that he doesn't like the old son of a bitch. Way to be current, as the lawsuit had already happened by this point. Taz finally spares us from hearing anymore of this ridiculous rant. The two end up coming to blows before they are pulled apart and wow did this segment bomb. Taz is arrested and escorted from the building to close things out, but ends up kicking out a window. I need to prepare a stock rant about wrestlers doing professional stunts, because we are in a timeframe where I'll need to roll it out quite a bit.

Cobb County Civic Center! ECW really looks like early 90s aesthetically and it's no wonder if they are using the same buildings. JYD, Dick Slater, Masked Superstar and Bob Armstrong are honored. ECW can brand anyone a hardcore wrestler since the term is a buzzword that ultimately signifies nothing.

The philosophy seems to be different in Power Pro than the USWA, as we are getting longer and more competitive matches on television so far. This was a really fun TV match with lots of props involved. The match requires tying up, which means the other wrestler has to lay there and pretend to not be able to fight the other guy off, but they do a nice job making that as plausible as they possibly can. Big schmozz at the end as the show goes off the air. In terms of how it's worked, this would have fit right in on either Monday night show at this time.

What year are those?

I would be very interested in a list of all the recommended viewing (matches - not necessarily just for match quality, promos, angles, etc.) from January 1, 2010 to the end of this year. I'm putting the idea out there in case there's anyone here who'd like to take leadership of it and make it happen, but I think it would be a good resource to get it down to something like this: 1st Tier - Essential, must-see viewing ... the best of the best 2nd Tier - Great and worth seeing 3rd Tier - Worth checking out (fun TV match, interesting carry job, good lead-in to another match, etc.) Anyone want to make something of this? It would be cool to see something resembling a consensus list from as big a cross-section of voices as possible.

While we're on the topic of phrases used to describe a wrestler's offense, what is the "wham" supposed to represent in KICK WHAM STUNNER?

Should a promotion's top program always be for the world title?
Loss replied to pol's topic in Pro Wrestling
I feel like the tag team titles and cruiserweight title (if one exists) should be on equal footing and be main event titles all the way. In my ideal wrestling, almost every wrestler on the roster would have a semi-established tag team partner to challenge for the gold, even if they mostly work singles matches. I also think when full-time tag teams face two singles wrestlers, the "real" tag team should win most of the time. All of that said, there are exceptions to every rule and there would be times where doing the opposite would be appropriate. As for the cruiserweight title, I don't think we will ever see any wrestling company present juniors as separate but equal in terms of marketing and promotional focus, television time and roster depth. But I do think that's what they should shoot for. Imagine how much fresher everything would be if you got a world title match every three months or so, and the other titles were defended about as often. -
Steve Blackman did jobs on WWF TV in the late 80s.

If they really want to create intrigue, Cena should put his career on the line and lose. Of course he'll come back eventually, but they can make a big redemption story out of it that culminates at Wrestlemania with a victory over someone and then leads to Cena-Brock at Summerslam next year. I'm not so sure Brock's run of dominance shouldn't extend past Wrestlemania if they do it right. They've created such a strong heel that we shouldn't feel like the big win has to come at Wrestlemania 31. If Brock is still hot at that point, no reason not to sustain it.

Misawa fought pretty desperately, but he wasn't at 100% and it showed. Kawada takes most of the offense in this and shockingly finally beats Misawa to win the Triple Crown after six years of chasing him. This was very good, but was pretty one-sided overall with Misawa really taking a heavy beating. Good for Kawada finally figuring this out, I just wish it had happened a few years sooner. This is a match I really liked, although I don't think it was at the level of their other TC matches.

That makes sense. I would also point out though that use of the cross armbreaker, especially in the Japanese feds, pre-dates the MMA boom.
