Kid Wikkid has a memorable gimmick - a Southern clubbing douchebag who likes to swear and shoot on people. It's this hodgepodge of weirdness that somehow works. Think Buff Bagwell with more of an edge. This was simultaneously really strange and really great. The camera is still rolling when the vignette ends and a DJ asks if anyone really bought that Kid Wikkid crap. This ends with Kid Wikkid beating up a DJ with a Daft Punk record, making this the single best wrestling segment of all time.

Santo is still on the darkside, which is A-OK with me! This is a breath of fresh air in so many ways. It's not often you get a trios match this loaded with great workers, and they definitely deliver something special. This escalates from matwork, to a faster pace with a strong heel-face divide and big drama with more brawling and mask ripping near the end. You get all the pairings you'd hope for as well - Santo/Casas and Atlantis/Panther starting us off with a bang. Black Warrior and Mr. Niebla are guys I haven't seen as much of, but they are great here, more than holding up their end. I like that when Atlantis and Panther brawl, they are such pros that they can't help but go after each other with holds because that's just who they are. I'm starting to love 1998. I literally have no idea when something awesome is going to pop up out of nowhere about which I have never heard much of anything at all. Great match! It kind of limps to an end after a hot start, which downgrades it from MOTYC to mere great match. But I still loved this one.

Ok, now I'm motivated to do a top 100 for each year of the 1990s.

Oh, I also liked the NWO takeover of Nitro with real time construction that lasted a half hour, just because it was such ballsy television. It was a practical nightmare and not the best idea during a ratings war, but it was a really cool departure from the norm. My guilty displeasure? Terry Funk is a great worker, but fuck his spaghetti legged selling.

I love the Papa Shango gimmick, and I even liked the angles where Warrior had ooze coming out of his forehead and where he doubled over in pain and started vomiting. I thought it was some awesomely dark shit. There, I said it.

My favorite BattlARTS match so far. Carl Greco is incredible - so fluid and crisp on the mat. I also love his palm strikes. From a purely technical standpoint, I'm not sure there was anyone in wrestling that was better at this point except maybe Tamura. Ishikawa isn't as prolific but he doesn't have to be, and his simplicity makes for an awesome contrast. I love the fisherman's suplex position being done as a hold instead of an executed move. I also always pop for traditional wrestling spots like the abdominal stretch and reversal that find their way into a match like this. Ishikawa pulls out an octopus and yeah, this is full of so much great stuff, and I don't think just running down all the spots and sequences the best way to get over how great this was. This was an awesome wrestling display and is either my MOTY at this point or something awfully close to that. Post-match, we get more Ishikawa-Ikeda brawling, as their acclaimed singles match is on the horizon. I love BattlARTS!

[1998-04-22-WCW-Thunder] Lex Luger & Rick Steiner vs Buff Bagwell & Scott Norton
Loss replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
This is that match. The Luger-Norton stuff is pretty fast-paced and better than you'd think, even though it doesn't last long. Steiner botches a top rope bulldog and Bagwell can't move. Luger and Steiner break character and stay in the ring by his side. Back from commercial and Bagwell is still laid out. The WCW guys are gone but Norton and Vincent are helping get Bagwell on a stretcher, and the show stops dead in its tracks. Schiavone and Tenay do a really good job handling this, and Heenan, perhaps because neck injuries are a soft spot for him, leaves the broadcast booth to check on him. This is tough to watch, but it's a reminder that wrestlers are people too. -
Taz is here to talk about injuring Shane Douglas's arm. Paul Heyman apparently tries to shut his mic off and Taz turns his attention to him for a minute and rants something or other about guys going to Atlanta or Vince. He talks about the "McMahon-Austin angle" while everything he is saying is a shoot. Taz overreacts to something Joey Styles said and Taz tells him he will slap the taste out of his mouth if he ever does it again. Styles says "What's with you, Taz?" as he's leaving and Taz comes back and shoves him down. This is terrible.

Joel Gertner recaps the Sandman injury from the previous week in hilariously sarcastic fashion.

Continue the JIP frustration with New Japan TV. This is a good glimpse of the top juniors of the time period. I love the Otani/Kanemoto/Takaiwa team. This was an incredibly exciting 7 or so minutes of action, and once again, I wish we had the entire thing in full. Hot crowd and a wild finishing stretch. There's some type of post-match angle here too with I think Hamada and Otani's team. I sincerely hope that one day we get an NJ Classics run that covers 1997-1999.

[1998-04-21-FMW-Fighting Creation] Mr Gannosuke vs Jinsei Shinzaki
Loss replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
I've tried to watch this four times and have had to start over each time because I've drifted off. I'm not sure why, as I generally like both guys, especially Gannosuke. I don't think my inability to concentrate had anything to do with the match. while I don't think this was super high end, I do think it was very good. Shinzaki has good chemistry with Gannosuke, but I don't think they had any other matches. This was basically an old-style FMW brawling match with an All Japan style bombfest at the end. -
The nWo - Did the positives outweigh the negatives?
Loss replied to JaymeFuture's topic in Pro Wrestling
Actually, with the benefit of hindsight, I think NWO vs NWO should have happened completely in its own universe. There's no need to do WCW guys vs NWO guys anymore - Starrcade would have symbolized that WCW has now won and that's it. So I probably would have had Sting drop the belt pretty quickly to Bret while Hogan/Savage come out on top of the NWO vs NWO feud when the smoke clears. Then Bret vs Hogan can be built up with Bret defending. Whoever is hotter wins and it doesn't really matter who wins that match. The winner drops the belt to Goldberg and the loser is his first major challenger to put him over. -
The nWo - Did the positives outweigh the negatives?
Loss replied to JaymeFuture's topic in Pro Wrestling
While Sting was set up well to be the guy, his work in 1998 left a lot to be desired, which is something all of us have noticed who are watching 1998 footage in the folders right now. It's not a case like Hogan where he's not a Ric Flair-type worker, it's that he didn't bring very much new to his act other than his look. Sting wouldn't have worked long term even if Hogan did put him over clean. That's not to say Sting shouldn't have won clean. But I think the short-term money was in NWO vs NWO, more specifically Hogan/Savage vs Hall/Nash, with neither side really turning babyface. That's not quite what they did - instead, they retreaded Hogan vs Savage and then tacked Nash on as an afterthought and turned him babyface to lead his own group when they never had plans of doing a Hogan vs Nash match. Sting could have held the title for a few months and feuded with WCW guys since the NWO feud wouldn't need the belt. That's not perfect either though, because I don't think Goldberg beating Bret or Sting would have had the same impact that beating Hogan did. But in spite of Sting being disappointing upon his return, I don't think Hogan ever beating him was the answer either. This is what happens when there's no long-term direction at all. -
Heyman makes such ridiculous demands and problems between him and Stephanie escalate to the point that Stephanie loses her cool and fires him? I'm not advocating that, just saying I could see something like that playing out.
-
You kinda wish they could pay Goldberg a lot of money to do a high-profile job to Reigns if they are hell bent on that direction. Maybe a few UFC guys would take dives too.

Last few minutes. Nick Patrick runs in and attack the referee. The two are working over Savage's leg on the ringpost and Nash finally runs out to make the save. Bischoff grabs Nash's leg from behind and eats a punch for his efforts before Nash powerbombs Hogan to a huge pop. Nash rolls Savage on top of Hogan when Bret Hart comes out and nails Nash with the title belt and then throws Hogan on top of Savage. Hogan is the champ again. Holy overreaction to losing the ratings war for one week! Piper comes out and wants Bret to explain himself and ends up getting punched in the face for it. This was a Bret heel turn without adding him to the NWO, which just made him especially lame.

What a fun match! Raven and the Flock did a fantastic job putting Goldberg over convincingly. Ungodly heat yet again. Goldberg wins the US title. I love the fans throwing Raven back in the ring when he tried to escape. This was a really big moment.

[1998-04-20-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Kevin Nash & Randy Savage
Loss replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
Savage rambles on for a few minutes before bringing out Nash and declaring him the new leader of the NWO, which the announcers treat as a blockbuster announcement. Nash promises that if Bischoff or Disciple interfere in the match, they get jackknifed.- 4 replies

Vince McMahon is doing commentary. Now, they are saying this isn't a #1 Contender's Match. Vince is again saying something big will happen at the pay-per-view or fans can get their money back. Dude puts on an abdominal stretch and the bell immediately rings. Now they are playing off of Montreal, which at one time was a good idea. Blackman attacks the timekeeper and Vince can't believe Blackman would treat the timekeeper like that. Then Austin comes out and attacks Dude and also gets his hand son Vince. I don't know if people got the angle right away. I know I didn't at first. But Austin is so hot it almost doesn't matter. Vince is pissed off in the ring ready to fight Austin, but Patterson and Brisco eat stunners when trying to reason with him. Austin chases Vince up the entrance ramp as the show goes off the air.
-
The excitement fans have for Austin is still a sight to be seen. I enjoy him calling Dude Love a "psychedelic jackass". Austin puts the pieces of the puzzle together, saying Vince and Dude Love were in this together the whole time. Austin promises that before the show is over, he'll get his hands on both Vince and the Dude.
-
We find out that Jeff Jarrett will perform with Sawyer Brown at Unforgiven. I'm not sure why they thought returning to this gimmick would get Jarrett over at all.
-
Vince quickly interrupts the Love Shack segment upset that the Dude messed with the Austin match the week before. He fines him $5,000 and then leaves. Dude explains himself by saying Austin attacked him from behind the week before. He also says that when the Dude was scoring hot chicks when they were tag team champions, Austin only got the attention of out-of-shape housewives. Dude is willing to forget about the #1 contenders match tonight against Steve Blackman (against Steve Blackman?) if Austin will just come out later and apologize. This promo meanders in a way Foley promos normally don't, as this gimmick makes it tough to do good promos, but it does advance the storyline.

Last few minutes. After a ref bump, Liz runs in and eats a Stinger Splash by accident. Then Hogan runs out and attacks Savage. Sting has Savage covered when Nash come in and attacks Sting with a powerbomb, giving Savage the win and the title. The Sting experiment is over. This whole show has been hotshot to death with all the angles and crazy finishes. The WWF clearly had their attention, which they should, but this is panic mode booking that I don't get at all.
