  1. Has the NFL been strongly influenced by MMA in recent years? The EPL? John Do you have a point? MMA is a sport. If it's a sport of such great influence, you'd think the Big Boys of Sport would be influence by it... rather than say... Entertainment Companies. John

  3. Maybe Vince can sign him. Would love to read Dave and other creaming for him in the WWE. John

  5. It is pretty funny that both Cornette and Heyman have gone all MMA. John

  8. Any summer for No Holds Barred would have been a bad summer. Only Vince thought it has any chance of making money. UHF needed to be a sleeper, and probably in March or October. Even then, the odds were long. It also was one that folks didn't think had Big Hit written all over it. John
  9. You kind of wish they had: "Raw debuted in 1993. This was before Vince delusionally believes Macho started fucking Steph."

  11. There's a thread over on DVDVR on the Greatness of Demolition. Someone should link to it. Either they work for you or don't. I wouldn't hold them up as a litmus test for appreciating WWF 80s Work, but I'm biased: I don't think tag team wrestling in the WWF was all that strong in the 80s. If I needed to appreciate *any* WWF tag team in that era to also appreciate the rest of WWF work, I'd be fucked. John

  14. Beats the shit out of me when the show ended: it's been close to 20 years, and when shows ended isn't something that sticks in the mind relative to the quality of the shows and matches and wrestlers I was watching. As far as where we were staying, it was at the very last starting of one of the Tokyo metro lines. Perhaps because I spent more on my wrestling trip than anyone who was at that show? You do know you're contradicting yourself: it's just not done, except AJW did it several times. So the fans knew that AJW did it at Dream Slam, but 40K of them came out for this one. I think you're projecting. I think most of us are laughing. Poor show and Worst Major Show Ever are wildly different things. So? It was mentioned in the WON write up of the show that very week. I'd expect Wiki to mention it since they probably lifted wholesale from Dave. On the other hand, Dave loved the show. So did the guy he went to the show with. Other people I talked to back then who went to the show loved it as well, and they weren't gaijin.
  15. That's funny. John Have you ever missed the last train from Tokyo Dome when you live in Chiba or Saitama or Kanagawa? I've missed the last train after a wrestling show in Tokyo. #1 - we got back "home" #2 - the show we went to was still incredibly enjoyable So I happen to think you're comment was funny. I also know several people who went to the show, and thought it was one of the best and/or more memorable (in a positive way) shows that they've ever seen. I'm sure you know people who think the opposite. Since neither you nor I were at the show, we're left with the tape, so gain... I think you're comment was pretty damn funny. John
  16. I'm not a righist either... far from it. But Che was a douchebag who gets romanticized by people who don't know better. Granted, he wasn't as big of a douchebag as Henry Kissenger, but still... John
  17. This is true. I suspect you'll find it isn't that big of a deal in rewatch. Just another thing that AJPW blew in terms of booking: Kawada's first win over Hansen. I mean... if you're going to have Kawada beat Hansen during Carny 93, there really isn't any reason not to have him beat him instead at Budokan the month before. Granted... it's a match I love, and I don't really want anything in it changed. But it's just dumbass stuff to so quickly and insignificantly give it away what you wouldn't just give to the fans. Clearly they wanted Hansen to look strong going into the next challenge of Misawa: 02/93 Budokan: Hansen over Kawada 03/93 Carny: Williams over Hansen 03/93 Carny: Hansen over Misawa 04/93 Carny: Kawada over Hansen 04/93 Carny: Hansen over Taue 04/93 Carny: Hansen over Kobashi 04/93 Carny: Hansen over Gordy 04/93 Carny Final: Hansen over Misawa And bingo, you have Hansen ready to challenge Misawa. They could probably have adjusted things around to give Kawada the Budokan win, and then Hansen coming right back to pin him in Carny. That wouldn't have hurt Kawada anymore than losing to Kawada in Carny hurt Hansen. It just would have given a higher profile to that first win. Of course these are the folks who buried Taue and Kobashi's first wins over Hansen in Carny, and we're lucky that they had those commercial tapes running. John
  18. I can't recall in a singles match on TV or on commercial tape. Might be one... but I'm drawing a blank. It was one reason the 3/95 result was a little surprising: that looked like a semi-obvious Kawada win when it was announced. Kawada pinned Hansen at the end of the 9/95 survival match at Budokan. That's a bit of a cheat, but from a format standpoint, it's a "series" of tag team matches, with the last one going (Kawada & Baba vs Kobashi & Hansen) right around 20 minutes. Anyway... clips of the 60+ minute match were on TV. Don't recall if it ever came out in full on commercial tape. I know the Misawa-Taue from the top of the card did. Kawada pinned Hansen when Kawada & Taue won the tag titles back from Hansen & Alright in 2/96. That was on TV. John
  19. I like a number of Tito's matches. His career was a disappointment in terms of matches. And we disagree on that. Suspect we'd find other people that fall on both sides of that point of view. John
